Abstract

The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology has developed and implemented new criteria for accrediting engineering technology programs in the United States. The new criteria, Technology Criteria 2000 (TC2K), have changed the way that engineering technology programs conduct their business. In order to survive in the future, each program has to develop a strategy to meet the new requirements specified in the TC2K. The Department of Engineering Technology at Texas Tech University has developed a program assessment portfolio (PAP) to assess the department performance toward the attainment of TC2K Criterion 1. This paper presents 12 assessment methods within the PAP. Particularly, it demonstrates how to develop and implement one of the assessment methods, pre- and postcourse assessment, to a senior-level course. Data collected from the implementation has been analyzed and results indicate that pre- and postcourse assessment provide valuable information regarding student learning. Abstract

This article is about the Electronic Education Environment, or E³ an infrastructure developed at the University of Texas at Austin to support processes in a virtual university (VU). A VU does not have a traditional campus, professors' offices, or a library. Instead, there are electronic workspaces and global libraries that provide richer functionality and features than their physical analogs. E&sup3 gives a VU the flexibility needed to match market demand with customized content and a mode of administration designed to minimize total transaction costs for all players. Students get content when and how they need them, paying only for resources they actually use. Thus, in addition to supporting more efficient distribution of educational content, E&sup3 reflects a reengineered vision of the education process itself. the E&sup3 infrastructure consists of many components, including a collaboratory, a payment system, and a document filtering system.

Abstract

For some years there has been a growing recognition by both educators and the profession of accountancy that one of the major problems in accountancy education is the difficulty of keeping the teaching staff abreast of the practical problems in the field. Generally, practical experience is one of the requirements before a permanent teaching appointment is secured. Of necessity this experience can be only for a few years and needs to be reviewed from time to time. In addition, many universities have had the experience of sending out promising young men to secure needed practical experience with the expectation that they would return to their teaching assignment. Almost without fail this expectation has not materialized, because by the time the young man has received adequate experience his value to the profession is such that the university is unable to compensate him sufficiently to secure his return to the classroom. The American Institute of Accountants has recognized this need in education and has begun to set up faculty residences or internships so that faculty men, in very limited numbers, may secure six months to a year's valuable experience in the offices of a public accounting firm. This is a fine step in the right direction but, it is believed, will operate very slowly and will not meet the needs of education fast enough.
