The article traces the origins of the Great Exhibition of London in England which served as the precursor of the World Expos. The first Great Exhibition of London took place on May 1, 1851 in Hyde Park. The exhibition's opening ceremony was attended by Queen Victoria. The success of the 1851 Great Exhibition prompted the International Exhibition Bureau to acknowledge the show as the first World Expo. It relates the role of Prince Albert and the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce in the launching of the 1851 exhibition. INSET: The Chinese Section.
