Over the past two decades, human geneticists have substantially embraced the concept of "biogeographical ancestry" to account for the racial, ethnic, and linguistic categories they use to analyze and interpret genetic difference. Understanding the ongoing role of these categories in human genetic research therefore requires attention to geneticists' representations of geography, particularly the geographic maps they use to illustrate gene distribution and migration. This article examines how the methods and imagery of international genetic geography and its major evolutionary narratives have reinforced or refashioned nationalist practices of geography in the Middle East. Geneticists simultaneously conceptualize the region's physical space as both a historical "crossroads" of human migration and the birthplace of distinct gene sequences and civilizations, alternately blurring and sharpening the boundaries between Europe and Asia. Focusing on genetic research in Turkey and Iran, this paper analyzes how geneticists draw and interpret geographic maps of the region while selectively erasing or highlighting state borders. These genetic maps negotiate between the idealized aims of international projects to reconstruct human evolutionary history, and the reality of practicing science under the constraints of nationstate politics. Upper Cretaceous carbonate rocks of the Sarvak Formation are among the most important hydrocarbon reservoirs of the Middle East. This paper summarizes the depositional history, diagenetic alteration, and geochemistry of this formation in south and southwest Iran. The combined effects of tectonic activities and the paleoclimate had remarkable control over the depositional–diagenetic evolution of this formation. Large changes in facies types, their frequency, and thickness were recorded across the study area and attributed to the tectonic activities. The complex diagenetic history of this formation includes minor marine, intensive meteoric, and burial diagenesis. Two pronounced paleoexposure events were recorded at the Cenomanian–Turonian boundary (CT-ES) and the middle Turonian (mT-ES), which are associated with remarkable changes in facies and diagenetic characteristics and special geochemical trends. Elemental (Mg, Fe, Rb, Mn, Sr), isotopic (carbon, oxygen), and 87Sr/86Sr ratios provide useful tools for delineating the paleoexposure surfaces, their associated diagenetic alterations, and chemo-sequence stratigraphic interpretation. Variable exposure durations resulted in immature to over-matured karstified profiles below the CT-ES and mT-ES, respectively. Meteorically dissolved rudist-dominated facies provided the best reservoir zone of the Sarvak Fm. in the regressive systems tract of the Cenomanian sequence, just below the CT-ES. Microporous and dolomitized mud-dominated facies formed the second important reservoir intervals, especially within the transgressive systems tracts. The results of this study revealed that the reservoir characteristics of the Sarvak Fm. were considerably controlled by paleoexposure events and, therefore, it can be considered as a typical paleokarst hydrocarbon reservoir in Iran. In 2021 as part of a research on apterygotes in Iran 18 specimens of Protura were collected; 14 of them were identified as Acerella muscorum (Ionesco, 1930), one was an Acerentomon belonging to the affine group, three were female specimens of a new species of Acerentulus described in this paper. Like other species belonging to confinis group, Acerentulus iranicussp. nov. has a complete row of posterior setae (18) on tergite VII, a long foretarsal sensillum a almost reaching seta γ3, and sensilla b and c almost of the same length, both passing the base of seta γ3. The closest species to A. iranicussp. nov. is A. setosus Szeptycki, 1993 from Western Caucasus (Russia). This species differs from the new species for its smaller pseudoculi, the ratio between mesothoracic setae P1 and P2, the presence of a doubled pore on tergite XII, and the longer foretarsal sensillum a. The partial description of an undetermined specimen of Acerentomon belonging to the affine group is outlined too. A key to the Protura species known from the Middle East is provided. Purpose: This study sought to evaluate the scientific publications of Iranian researchers in the field of internal medicine as well as to compare them with those of the countries of the Middle East and the world within 2009-2018. Design/methodology/approach: In this bibliometric study, the Scopus database was used. All papers published in the past ten years by researchers from Iran, the Middle East and the world in the field of internal medicine were included in the study. Data analysis and drawing of scientific maps were performed using Excel and VOS viewer software. Findings: The number of scientific papers of Iranian researchers in the field of internal medicine has been ever-growing in the last ten years. In this respect, Tehran University of Medical Sciences is the most productive university in Iran with 4629 documents. The results of the visualization of the key thematic subject areas of internal medicine based on the keywords and terminologies of the title and abstracts showed that "epidemiological studies" were the most important subject areas of this field. A study of the contribution of countries in the world and the Middle East in scientific publications in the field of internal medicine showed that the United States was the world's top country with 438,392 documents and published 36.99% of the world's papers on internal medicine. It should be noted that amongst the Middle East countries, Turkey and Iran have the highest share of scientific publications so that about 56 percent of Middle East scientific publications are published by these two countries. Results: In the last decade, Iranian Journal of Internal Medicine has had a growing trend in terms of number of scientific publications. But most of the papers of Iranian researchers were published in the third and fourth quartiles. Accordingly, it is recommended that Iranian researchers prioritize the publication of articles in the first and second quarter journals and select these journals for publication. Practical implications: Evaluating the process of scientific publications and identifying key thematic subject areas of internal medicine based on keywords and terms of the titles and abstracts can be useful for researchers in this field and help them understand research trends and locate hot spots and research gaps. The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between managerial ability and earnings classification shifting of firms listed in the Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE). The paper consists of a sample of 1,875 firm-year observations after applying systematic elimination sampling method during a period of fifteen years, from 2005 to 2019. This study used the multivariate panel data regression for testing the links between variables. The results of this study provide that there is a positive relationship between managerial ability and earnings classification shifting. The obtained results indicate that there is a negative relationship between managerial ability and real earnings management and no relationship between managerial ability and AEM. In addition, managerial ability mitigates the negative effect of earnings management on future firm performance. Furthermore, managerial ability affects its agency cost positively due to the reduction in earnings management. This paper contributes to developing management literature and financial reporting literature. The study focuses on links managerial ability and earnings classification shifting and agency cost in a developing country like Iran, and the results of the paper can fill distance theory and practice by empirical test. Furthermore, the results of this study indicate in an emerging market, namely, Iran, that has a political business environment among the other countries of the Middle East, managerial ability can release Iranian firms on economic sanctions and financial pressures. A comparative study of the university systems of the countries of the Near East has been undertaken in this paper. It has been illustrated that the most competitive systems in terms of World University Rankings are the university systems of Iran, Israel, and Saudi Arabia. This conclusion, at a glance, was made based on the distribution of all the universities of 14 countries of the Near East by the ten World University Rankings. This conclusion was confirmed in a more detailed manner upon entering and calculating three integral indicators of country university competitiveness. They were expressed by multiplying and adding the number of the universities of the countries mentioned in the rankings mentioned above and the average values of the positioning of the universities in these systems. Together with the number of universities distributed among the countries, these three indicators correlated well with each other. The devised methodology of a quantitative assessment of country university competitiveness is proposed for a comparative study of this competitiveness in random groups of countries worldwide. The rise of biosimilar provides an opportunity for healthcare systems worldwide to reduce costs and ensure affordability as well as accessibility of these pivotal products. This is particularly the case in developing countries with restricted budgets to guarantee the availability of safe and cost-effective drugs. Accordingly, this paper aims to study Iranian pharmaceutical industry to show the development of the biosimilar sector, which has emerged in the wake of an intense global interest in the production and marketing of biosimilar. This paper adopted a descriptive cross-sectional method to investigate the Iranian pharmaceutical industry by focusing on biosimilar products over a fifteen-year period (2002-2016). Results obtained showed an upward trend in the domestic production of biosimilars, which has helped secure the first place for the country in the Middle East. In addition, Iran has laid down strict regulatory guidelines for the approval of locally produced biosimilar. The findings also highlight the significant savings generated for the healthcare system thanks to the manufacturing of non-innovator products. These results suggested that observing global regulatory guidelines and providing safe and cost-effective biosimilars are imperative for health care systems in all countries interested in this promising market. The Aceramic Neolithic site of Ganj Dareh (Kermanshah, Iran) is arguably one of the most significant sites for enhancing our understanding of goat domestication and the onset of sedentism. Despite its central importance, it has proven difficult to obtain contextually reliable data from it and integrate the site in regional syntheses because it was never published in full after excavations ceased in 1974. This paper presents the Ganj Dareh archive at Université de Montréal and shows how the documentation and artifacts it comprises still offer a great deal of useful information about the site. In particular, we 1) present the first stratigraphic profile for the site, which reveals a more complex depositional history than Smith's five-level sequence; 2) reveal the presence of two possible pre-agricultural levels (H-01 and P-01); 3) explore the spatial organization of different levels; 4) explain possible discrepancies in the radiocarbon dates from the site; 5) show some differences in lithic technological organization in levels H-01 and P-01 suggestive of higher degrees of residential mobility than subsequent phases of occupation at the site; and 6) reanalyze the burial data to broaden our understanding of Aceramic Neolithic mortuary practices in the Zagros. These data help refine our understanding of Ganj Dareh's depositional and occupational history and recenter it as a key site to improve our understanding the Neolithization process in the Middle East. Soil moisture (SM) governs the exchange of energy and water between the atmosphere and land surface. In situ measurements of SM are uneven in Iran. This knowledge gap can be filled using satellite- and model-based products. This study assessed the performance of SM products, including Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP), Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR2), and Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) Catchment Land Surface Model (CLSM) against in situ observations considering the influence of soil texture, climate, and land cover over Lake Urmia Basin, which is the largest salt lake in Iran and the Middle East. In situ SM was measured over Lake Urmia Basin in the morning and afternoon using the time domain reflectometry (TDR) and oven drying and weighing techniques. Five statistical indicators, including correlation (R), absolute correlation (R(abs)), bias, root mean square error (RMSE), and unbiased root mean square error (ubRMSE), were applied. C-band AMSR2 products showed the best performance in grassland and croplands with the highest absolute correlation (0.63) and lowest average bias (−0.01). Among soil textures, SM products performed better in clay soils with the highest absolute correlation between C-band AMSR2 products and in situ observations (0.64) and low average bias and RMSE. Analyzing data based on climate, AMSR2 C1, and GLDAS products with the lowest average RMSE (0.08 m3m−3) and bias (0.01) and AMSR2 C2 with the absolute correlation of 0.6 showed the best performance in both temperate (Csa) and cold (Dsa) climate classes. For all classifications (land cover, soil texture, climate divisions), SMAP products reported the lowest average value of ubRMSE (0.03 m3m−3). The major contribution of the paper is finding the best SM products that can fill the gap in SM measurements data in Lake Urmia. Background: Accomplishments in stem cell science and tissue engineering have resulted in a remarkable revolution in the context of future medicine. However, a general insight over the progress of stem cell research in Iran is still lacking. A better understanding of current needs in this field is required to design a better national roadmap. Methods: In this study, we defined the geographical regions based on the significance of their contribution to stem cell research; then, using the Scopus database, we retrieved reports from Iran and other countries concerning stem cell science and regenerative medicine published from 1994 until the end of 2016. Results: A significant number of citations belong to North America (6 554 029 citations equal to 49% of the total citations) and Europe (4 425 465 citations equal to 33% of the total citations) and the rest of citations were related to Asia (2 423 352 citations equal to 18% of the total citations). East Asian (2 168 472 citations equal to 76% of the total citations related to Asia) documents were cited more than those from the Middle East (ME) (494 141 citations equal to 17% of the total citations related to Asia) and North and Central Asia (196 382 citations equal to 7% of the total citations related to Asia). Iran as a country in the ME attracted 17% of the total citations related to the Asian countries winning the second position in this regard. The overview of total number of citations showed a sharp increase and upward trend in citation numbers for all the Iranian institutes from 2007 that resulted in the expansion of stem cell science in all major cities of Iran such as Shiraz (8%), Mashhad (5%), Isfahan (5%) and Ahvaz (5%). H-index of Tehran University of Medical Science, which has the highest total citations and document numbers, is the highest among all Iranian research institutes. Citation per paper of Royan Institute (RI) is the highest among the top 10 Iranian institutes, by 13 citations per paper. Conclusion: Stem cell research in Iran is rapidly developing. Since 2007, the number of published documents in major research institutes increased; thus, there is necessity for analysis of the status of publications in this field and choosing a better direction based on needs. This paper examines the frames in which the Arab - Israeli normalization is presented to the public in the Middle Eastern press. The main purpose of the study is to determine the similarities and differences of the regional powers framing methods of the normalization attempt, and to discover if there is a casual relationship between framing methods and the countries foreign policies. In this direction, the study adopts the "framing" approach as the conceptual basis. For this research, data collection technique and discourse analysis were chosen as qualitative methods in order to analyze the data. The scope of the research consists of news from the media of four regional powers; Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Egypt from August 13, 2020, the day when the joint declaration was signed, to September 15, 2020, the day when the Abraham Accords were signed. The main argument of the study is that the Arab-Israeli normalization is presented in the Middle Eastern media in a reconstructed way, and the regional powers foreign policy determines the way in which the news are framed. Context: The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is classified into seven genotypes and more than 100 subtypes. The treatment regimen, duration and efficacy of HCV therapy may vary according to the HCV genotype. Therefore, the HCV genotype should be determined prior to antiviral therapy. The objective of the current study was to review systematically all studies reporting the distribution of HCV genotypes in the countries that make up the Middle East. Evidence Acquisition: Articles were identified by searching electronic databases, including Scopus, PubMed and Google scholar, with timeline limits (articles published between 1995 and 2016). We carried out a systematic search regarding the distribution of HCV genotypes in Middle Eastern countries. Results: A total of 579 studies were identified by the electronic search. Of these, a total of 187 were identified as eligible papers including 60,319 patients who were meta-analyzed for pooled distribution of HCV genotypes. In Turkey, Israel, Cyprus, and Iran, genotype 1 was the most prevalent HCV genotype with rates of 82% (95% CI, 82%-83%), 68% (95% CI, 67%-69%), 68% (95% CI, 59%-77%), and 55% (95% CI, 54%-55%), respectively. In Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Syria, HCV genotype 4 was the most common genotype with rates of 86% (95% CI, 85%-88%), 60% (95% CI, 56%-64%), 56% (95% CI, 54%-55%), and 57% (95% CI, 54%-61%), respectively. On the basis of adjusted data, HCV genotype 4 was the most prevalent genotype in the Middle East region, with a rate of 74.7% (95% CI, 73.4%-76%), followed by genotype 1 at 15.1% (95% CI, 14.1%-16%). Conclusions: Our results showed that HCV genotype 4 is the most prevalent genotype in the Middle East region. However, HCV genotype 1 is the most prevalent among non-Arab countries in the region including Turkey, Iran, Cyprus, and Israel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Models for the development of metallurgy in Southwest Asia have for a long time been focussed on research carried out in the lowland regions of the Levant and Mesopotamia. These models do not take into account the different developmental trajectories witnessed in the resource-rich highlands of Anatolia, the Caucasus, and Iran. In this paper, the beginnings of the use and production of metals in Iran will be juxtaposed with a cursory overview of the lowland model (the ‘Levantine Paradigm’) in order to highlight these differences. By synthesizing data from a number of current research projects exploring the early metallurgy of the Iranian Plateau, this paper demonstrates how at least one of the highland regions of Southwest Asia was at the very forefront of technological innovation from the seventh through the second millennium BC. The Laks are a West Iranian ethnic group linguistically closely related to the Lurs and the Kurds. They mainly inhabit the provinces of Luristan, Kirmanshah, Ilam, and Hamadan in the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as Kirkuk and Khanaqin in Iraq. The paper presents some imaginary figures from the folk beliefs of the Laks, recorded by the author within the framework of a larger project on the ethnography and folklore of the Laks. Understanding rainfall variability in the arid, rugged landscapes of Iran requires studying the climatology and spatial patterns of daily precipitation. This paper applies geostatistical and other methods to daily precipitation data from 90 stations that are distributed across Iran to calculate daily rainfall concentration and intensity and map their spatial distribution. The results show that daily precipitation tends to be irregular and intense across much of Iran and that a disproportionately large share of the annual rainfall comes from a small number of high intensity to extreme rainfall events. Analysis of daily rainfall concentration confirms that extreme events are widely distributed across the country, with more than 20% of the land area exposed to the risk of extreme rainfall. The areas experiencing the most frequent extreme events are the hot, dry southern coast and the western slopes of the main north–south range, the Zagros Mountains. Even the wettest parts of the country along the Caspian Sea coast derive a significant amount of their rain from high intensity and extreme events. Background: Patient safety in primary care is an emerging field of research with a growing evidence base in western countries but little has been explored in the Gulf Cooperation Council Countries (GCC) including the Sultanate of Oman. This study aimed to review the literature on the safety culture and patient safety measures used globally to inform the development of safety culture among health care workers in primary care with a particular focus on the Middle East. Methods: A systematic review of the literature. Searches were undertaken using Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL and Scopus from the year 2000 to 2014. Terms defining safety culture were combined with terms identifying patient safety and primary care. Results: The database searches identified 3072 papers that were screened for inclusion in the review. After the screening and verification, data were extracted from 28 papers that described safety culture in primary care. The global distribution of the articles is as follows: the Netherlands (7), the United States (5), Germany (4), the United Kingdom (1), Australia, Canada and Brazil (two for each country), and with one each from Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. The characteristics of the included studies were grouped under the following themes: safety culture in primary care, incident reporting, safety climate and adverse events. The most common theme from 2011 onwards was the assessment of safety culture in primary care (13 studies, 46%). The most commonly used safety culture assessment tool is the Hospital survey on patient safety culture (HSOPSC) which has been used in developing countries in the Middle East. Conclusions: This systematic review reveals that the most important first step is the assessment of safety culture in primary care which will provide a basic understanding to safety-related perceptions of health care providers.
