This article focuses on steps taken by New York City administration to curb smoking among Asians living in the city. The casual attitude depicted by these Asians towards the hazards of smoking are posing a challenge to public health workers as they struggle to get the message to Asian immigrants about one of the community's most pressing health issues: an unusually high smoking rate. The city has had some success building ties with Latino and West African communities to address issues like diabetes and infant mortality. But it's been stymied in breaking though cultural and language barriers to get the antismoking message to Asians, the fastest-growing group of immigrants in the city. INSET: Firm becomes smoke deflector.
