Use of advanced communication technologies, highly integrated control, and programming platforms drastically increases the performance of industrial control systems. That is the case of Motronic, where the synergistic collaboration between industry and academia has led to an advanced distributed network control system. To be commercially successful, it needs to have a low cost and to be robust, even if this requirement implies that it is a custom design and not based on previously existing commercial solutions. Use of standards and off-the-shelf products lower development costs, but usually raise production costs. In this paper, we show that, in certain applications, design of a new system from scratch is more advantageous. This system comprises a set of dynamically reconfigurable local controller nodes, a graphical programming environment, a remote supervision and control system, and a fault-tolerant fiber optical network. TCP/IP connectivity is provided by the use of a local gateway. Motronic is currently being applied in the integrated control of large production plants and in energy and power management industries. Modular multilevel converters have become the prominent topology for medium- and high-voltage applications. The performance of these converters highly depends on the accuracy of the used modulation approach, for which the capacitor voltage of submodules (SM) are usually assumed to be equal. This article exhibits that ignoring the capacitor voltage differences among SMs adversely affects the system performance. This becomes more obvious the larger the capacitor voltage differences are. Hence, this article proposes a more accurate feedforward modulation approach that takes into account either the instantaneous capacitor voltage value and the real output voltage in the modulation stage. As a result, in applications where larger SM voltage differences are expected, the current distortion and control performance are improved. Particularly, switching–saving approaches benefit from this method as it enables their operation with reduced switching losses without the downsides of increased distortion due to capacitor voltage differences. The proposed approach is analyzed and compared with the nearest-level modulation and with the level-shift PWM. Based on Floquet theory, a simple and fast time‐domain stability analysis method for an N‐parallel inverters system is proposed. Furthermore, a general time‐domain model of the N‐parallel inverters system in grid‐connected mode and in island mode are derived, and the corresponding stability criteria are derived based on the Floquet theory. Subsequently, simulations and experiments of a two‐parallel inverters system in island and grid‐connected modes are conducted to verify the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed time‐domain stability analysis method. To the end, the complexity comparison between the proposed time‐domain method and the traditional frequency‐domain method is presented to prove the advantages of the proposed method over the tedious manual derivation. Stochastic logic is based on digital processing of a random pulse stream, where the information is codified as the probability of a high level in a finite sequence. This binary pulse sequence can be digitally processed exploiting the similarity between Boolean algebra and statistical algebra. Given a random pulse sequence, any Boolean operation among individual pulses will correspond to an algebraic expression among the variables represented by their respective average pulse rates. Subsequently, this pulse stream can be digitally processed to perform analog operations. In this paper, we propose a stochastic approach to the digital implementation of complex controllers using programmable devices as an alternative to traditional digital signal processors. As an example, a practical realization of nonlinear dissipative controllers for a series resonant converter is presented. A neural controller implementing an energy feedback control law is proposed as an alternative to classic control of resonant converters. The properties of the energy feedback control, and particularly the optimal trajectory control law, are analyzed. As a result, the state space is considered to be divided into two subspaces, that correspond to different states of the switches in the converter. An analog neural network learns to classify these two classes by means of a learning algorithm. A simple electronic implementation of this controller is proposed and applied to a series resonant converter (SRC). Results based on prototype measurements show a good improvement in the SRC response versus classical control methods based on the linearization of the state variable equations around a working point and confirm the validity of the neural approach. An experimental neural controller implementing a variable structure control (VSC) algorithm is proposed for a power factor preregulator. VSC control laws yield fast response and a robust behavior against large parameters variations. A multilayer perceptron learns through backpropagation to approximate the desired adaptive control functions. The main advantage of the neural network implementation in comparison to the numerical implementation is that decreases complexity and cost of the controller, and increases the switching frequency. A simple analog electronic realization of this neural network using discrete operational amplifiers is proposed. This implementation possesses all good properties of sliding mode while avoiding the unnecessary discontinuities of the control input signals and thus eliminating chattering. A common method in adjustable speed drives uses an incremental shaft encoder and an electronic circuit for velocity estimation. The usual method of counting pulses coming from the encoder in a fixed period of time produces a high-precision velocity estimate in the high-speed range. High precision in the low-speed range can be achieved measuring the elapsed time between two successive pulses coming from the encoder. In this paper a mixed method that combines the best of the two previously mentioned approaches has been implemented using a simple electronic circuit based on one field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and one read-only memory (ROM).

This paper proposes a novel 49-level stacked inverter topology for drives. The 49 levels are achieved by stacking three 17-level inverters. Each of the 17-level inverter is developed by cascading a flying capacitor (FC) inverter with three capacitor-fed H-bridges. The device count can be reduced by making the FC and the three cascaded H-bridges common to the dc link in each phase using selector switches in between them. The selector switches need to operate at fundamental frequency only. Also, the devices need to block very low voltages. Hence, MOSFETs can be used. This topology requires three dc sources, each of V\text{dc} /6 only, which can be replaced with stacked batteries for electric vehicle applications. The reduction in the dc voltage requirement is achieved by using a normal symmetric six-phase induction motor with parallel connection of the opposite phase windings. All the floating capacitors in the topology can be balanced irrespective of any modulation index or load power factor. Due to the high number of voltage levels, nearest level control can be used instead of pulse width modulation, which reduces the switching losses. The $dv/dt$ during the inverter operation is also less. Detailed experimental results at different speeds of operation and during transients ensure that the novel topology can be a viable option for high-power adjustable speed drives. In this study, analysis of extending the linear modulation range of a zero common-mode voltage (CMV) operated n-level inverter by allowing reduced CMV switching is presented. A new hybrid seven-level inverter topology with a single DC supply is also presented in this study and inverter operation for zero and reduced CMV is analysed. Each phase of the inverter is realised by cascading two three-level flying capacitor inverters with a half-bridge module in between. Proposed inverter topology is operated with zero CMV for modulation index <86% and is operated with a CMV magnitude of Vdc/18 to extend the modulation range up to 96%. Experimental results are presented for zero CMV operation and for reduced common voltage operation to extend the linear modulation range. A capacitor voltage balancing algorithm is designed utilising the pole voltage redundancies of the inverter, which works for every sampling instant to correct the capacitor voltage irrespective of load power factor and modulation index. The capacitor voltage balancing algorithm is tested for different modulation indices and for various transient conditions, to validate the proposed topology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A three-level common-mode voltage eliminated inverter with single dc supply using flying capacitor inverter and cascaded H-bridge has been proposed in this paper. The three phase space vector polygon formed by this configuration and the polygon formed by the common-mode eliminated states have been discussed. The entire system is simulated in Simulink and the results are experimentally verified. This system has an advantage that if one of devices in the H-bridge fails, the system can still be operated as a normal three-level inverter at full power. Multilevel converters have been under research and development for more than three decades and have found successful industrial application. However, this is still a technology under development, and many new contributions and new commercial topologies have been reported in the last few years. The aim of this paper is to group and review these recent contributions, in order to establish the current state of the art and trends of the technology, to provide readers with a comprehensive and insightful review of where multilevel converter technology stands and is heading. This paper first presents a brief overview of well-established multilevel converters strongly oriented to their current state in industrial applications to then center the discussion on the new converters that have made their way into the industry. In addition, new promising topologies are discussed. Recent advances made in modulation and control of multilevel converters are also addressed. A great part of this paper is devoted to show nontraditional applications powered by multilevel converters and how multilevel converters are becoming an enabling technology in many industrial sectors. Finally, some future trends and challenges in the further development of this technology are discussed to motivate future contributions that address open problems and explore new possibilities. Simplified space vector modulation (SVM) techniques for multilevel converters are being developed to improve factors such as the computational cost, number of commutations, and voltage distortion. The feedforward SVM presented in this paper takes into account the actual dc capacitor voltage unbalance of the multilevel power converter. The resulting technique is a low-cost generalized feedforward 3-D SVM method and is particularized for three-phase multilevel diode-clamped converters. This new modulation technique can be applied to topologies where the gamma component may not be zero. The computational cost of the proposed method is similar to those of comparable methods and it is independent of the number of levels of the power converter.
