In this paper we propose the model that the coalescence of primordial black holes (PBHs) binaries with equal mass $M \sim 10^{28}$g can emit luminous gigahertz (GHz) radio transient, which may be candidate sources for the observed fast radio bursts (FRBs), if at least one black hole holds appropriate amount of net electric charge $Q$. Using a dimensionless quantity for the charge $q = Q/\sqrt{G}M$, our analyses infer that $q\sim O(10^{-4.5})$ can explain the FRBs with released energy of order $O(10^{40}) {\rm ergs}$. With the current sample of FRBs and assuming a distribution of charge $\phi(q)$ for all PBHs, we can deduce that its form is proportional to $q^{-3.0\pm0.1}$ for $q\geq 7.2\times10^{-5}$ if PBHs are sources of the observed FRBs. Furthermore, with the proposed hypothetical scenario and by estimating the local event rate of FRBs $\sim 2.6 \times 10^3 {\rm Gpc}^{-3} {\rm yr}^{-1}$, one derives a lower bound for the fraction of PBHs (at the mass of $10^{28}$g) against that of matter $f_{\rm PBH}(10^{28}{\rm g})$ $\gtrsim 10^{-5}$ needed to explain the rate. With this inspiring estimate, we expect that future observations of FRBs can help to falsify their physical origins from the PBH binaries coalescences. In the future, the gravitational waves produced by mergers of small black holes can be detected by high frequency gravitational wave detectors. A large-scale ordered magnetic field plays a very important role in the formation and acceleration of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) jet. During the GRB prompt phase, some dissipation processes may happen and disturb the magnetic field, making the field become random to some extent. Therefore, a mixed magnetic field consisting of an ordered component and a random component is plausible for the early afterglow phase. Here we investigate the polarization evolution and light curve of an afterglow under such a 3-dimensional mixed magnetic field. Three kinds of ordered component (i.e., aligned, toroidal and radial) are discussed. We find that the three cases are distinguishable through jet polarization evolution. The polarization angle for a 3D mixed magnetic field with an aligned ordered component can evolve gradually but only changes abruptly by $90^\circ$ in the toroidal and radial cases. Furthermore, during the reverse shock crossing time, the polarization degree (PD) can be non-zero for the toroidal case but roughly zero for the radial case. Since an aligned component in a jet corresponds to a magnetar central engine and a toroidal component corresponds to a black hole, GRB central engines are distinguishable through polarization observations even if the magnetic field is mixed in a jet. In addition, our polarization calculation can be applied to GRB 170817A associated with GW170817. Using the recently-observed PD upper limit $12\%$ of GRB 170817A at $t=244$ days, the magnetic field strength ratio of the ordered to random components in this afterglow is constrained to be $\lesssim0.9$., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures, accepted by ApJ

This is the fourth paper in a series of publications aiming at discovering quasars at the epoch of reionization. In this paper, we expand our search for $z\sim 7$ quasars to the footprint of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Data Release One (DR1), covering $\sim 5000$ deg$^2$ of new area. We select $z\sim 7$ quasar candidates using deep optical, near-infrared (near-IR) and mid-IR photometric data from the DES DR1, the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS), the VISTA Kilo-degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) survey, the UKIRT InfraRed Deep Sky Surveys -- Large Area Survey (ULAS) and the unblurred coadds from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explore ($WISE$) images (unWISE). The inclusion of DES and unWISE photometry allows the search to reach $\sim$ 1 magnitude fainter, comparing to our $z \gtrsim 6.5$ quasar survey in the northern sky (Wang et al. 2018). We report the initial discovery and spectroscopic confirmation of six new luminous quasars at $z>6.4$, including an object at $z=7.02$, the fourth quasar yet known at $z>7$, from a small fraction of candidates observed thus far. Based on the recent measurement of $z \sim 6.7 $ quasar luminosity function using the quasar sample from our survey in the northern sky, we estimate that there will be $\gtrsim$ 55 quasars at $z > 6.5$ at $M_{1450} < -24.5$ in the full DES footprint., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, submitted to AJ

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are intense radio transients whose physical origin remains unknown. Therefore, it is of crucial importance to use a model-independent method to obtain the energy function and cosmic formation rate directly from the observational data. Based on current samples from the Parkes and ASKAP telecsopes, we determine, for the first time, the energy function and formation rate of FRBs by using the Lynden-Bell $\rm C^{-}$ method. The energy function derived from the Parkes sample is a broken power law, however it is a simple power law for the ASKAP sample. For Parkes sample, we derive the formation rate which is roughly consistent with the star formation rate up to $z\sim1.7$, with a local formation rate of $\dot \rho (0) \simeq (3.2\pm 0.3)\; \times {10^4}\;{\rm{Gp}}{{\rm{c}}^{ - 3}}{\rm{y}}{{\rm{r}}^{ - 1}}$ above a detection threshold of $2\,{\rm{Jyms}}$. For ASKAP sample, we find that the formation rate evolves much faster than the star formation rate up to $z\sim0.7$, namely $\dot \rho (z) \propto {(1 + z)^{6.9 \pm 1.9}}$, with a local formation rate of $\dot \rho (0) \simeq (4.6\pm 0.8)\; \times {10^3}\;{\rm{Gp}}{{\rm{c}}^{ - 3}}{\rm{y}}{{\rm{r}}^{ - 1}}$ above a detection threshold of $51\,{\rm{Jyms}}$. We present the Data Release 4&5 quasar catalog from the quasar survey by Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST), which includes quasars observed between September 2015 and June 2017. There are a total of 19,253 quasars identified by visual inspections of the spectra. Among them, 11,458 are independently discovered by LAMOST, in which 3296 were reported by SDSS DR12 and DR14 quasar catalog after our survey began, while the rest 8162 are new discoveries of LAMOST. We provide the emission line measurements for the Halpha, Hbeta, MgII and/or CIV for 18100 quasars. Since LAMOST does not have absolute flux calibration information, we obtain the monochromatic continuum luminosities by fitting the SDSS photometric data using the quasar spectra, and then estimate the black hole masses. The catalog and spectra for these quasars are available online. This is the third installment in the series of LAMOST quasar survey which has released spectra for totally ~43,000 quasars hitherto. There are 24,772 independently discovered quasars, 17,128 of which are newly discovered. In addition to the great supplement to the new quasar discoveries, LAMOST has also provided a large database (overlapped with SDSS) for investigating the quasar spectral variability and discovering unusual quasars, including changing-look quasars, with ongoing and upcoming large surveys., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures, accepted by ApJS

This is the third paper in a series aims at finding reionzation-era quasars with the combination of DESI Legacy imaging Surveys (DELS) and near-infrared imaging surveys, such as the UKIRT Hemisphere Survey (UHS), as well as the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explore ($WISE$) mid-infrared survey. In this paper, we describe the updated quasar candidate selection procedure, report the discovery of 16 quasars at $6.4\lesssim z \lesssim6.9$ from area of $\sim$13,020 deg$^2$, and present the quasar luminosity function (QLF) at $z\sim6.7$. The measured QLF follows $\Phi(L_{1450})\propto L_{1450}^{-2.35}$ in the magnitude range $27.6

We present the final results from our survey of luminous $z \sim $ 5.5 quasars. This is the first systematic quasar survey focusing on quasars at $z \sim$ 5.5, during the post-reionization epoch. It has been challenging to select quasars at $5.3 < z < 5.7$ using conventional color selections, due to their similar optical colors to those of late-type stars, especially M dwarfs. We developed a new selection technique for $z \sim$ 5.5 quasars based on optical, near-IR, and mid-IR photometry, using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), PanSTARR1 (PS1), the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Surveys - Large Area Survey, the UKIRT Hemisphere Survey, the VISTA Hemisphere Survey, and the Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer ($WISE$), covering $\sim$ 11000 deg$^2$ of high galactic latitude sky. In this paper, we present the discovery of 15 new quasars at $z\sim 5.5$. Together with results from Yang et al. (2017), our survey provides a complete, flux-limited sample of 31 quasars at $5.3 \le z \le 5.7$. We measure the quasar spatial density at $z \sim 5.5$ and $M_{1450} < -26.2$. Our result is consistent with the rapid decline of quasar spatial density from $z = 5$ to 6, with $k=-0.66 \pm 0.05$ ($\rho(z) \propto 10^{kz}$). In addition, we present a new survey using optical colors only from the full PS1 area for luminous quasars at $z = 5.0 - 5.5$, beyond the SDSS footprint, and report the preliminary results from this survey, including 51 new quasars discovered at $4.61\le z \le5.71$., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, submitted to ApJ

Strong gravitational lensing provides a powerful probe of the physical properties of quasars and their host galaxies. A high fraction of the most luminous high-redshift quasars was predicted to be lensed due to magnification bias. However, no multiple imaged quasar was found at z>5 in previous surveys. We report the discovery of J043947.08+163415.7, a strongly lensed quasar at z=6.51, the first such object detected at the epoch of reionization, and the brightest quasar yet known at z>5. High-resolution HST imaging reveals a multiple imaged system with a maximum image separation theta ~ 0.2", best explained by a model of three quasar images lensed by a low luminosity galaxy at z~0.7, with a magnification factor of ~50. The existence of this source suggests that a significant population of strongly lensed, high redshift quasars could have been missed by previous surveys, as standard color selection techniques would fail when the quasar color is contaminated by the lensing galaxy., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, submitted to ApJL

Despite extensive efforts, only two quasars have been found at $z>7$ to date due to a combination of low spatial density and high contamination from more ubiquitous Galactic cool dwarfs in quasar selection. This limits our current knowledge of the super-massive black hole (SMBH) growth mechanism and reionization history. In this letter, we report the discovery of a luminous quasar at $z=7.021$, DELS J003836.10$-$152723.6 (hereafter J0038$-$1527), selected using photometric data from DESI Legacy imaging Survey (DELS), Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) imaging Survey, as well as Wide-field Infrared Survey Explore ($WISE$) mid-infrared all-sky survey. With an absolute magnitude of $M_{1450}$=$-$27.1 and bolometric luminosity of $L_{\rm Bol}$=5.6$\times$10$^{13}$ $L_\odot$, J0038$-$1527 is the most luminous quasar known at $z>7$. Deep optical to near infrared spectroscopic observations suggest that J0038-1527 hosts a 1.3 billion solar mass BH accreting at the Eddington limit, with an Eddington ratio of 1.25$\pm$0.19. The CIV broad emission line of J0038$-$1527 is blue-shifted by more than 3000 km s$^{-1}$ to the systemic redshift. More detailed investigations of the high quality spectra reveal three extremely high velocity CIV broad absorption lines (BALs) with velocity from 0.08 to 0.14 times the speed of light and total balnicity index of more than 5000 km s$^{-1}$, suggesting the presence of relativistic outflows. J0038$-$1527 is the first quasar found at the epoch of reionization (EoR) with such strong outflows and provides a unique laboratory to investigate AGN feedback on the formation and growth of the most massive galaxies in the early universe., Comment: ApJL in press

Galaxy clusters trace the largest structures of the Universe and provide ideal laboratories for studying galaxy evolution and cosmology. Clusters with extended X-ray emission have been discovered at redshifts up to z ~ 2.5. Meanwhile, there has been growing interest in hunting for protoclusters, the progenitors of clusters, at higher redshifts. It is, however, very challenging to find the largest protoclusters at early times when they start to assemble. Here we report a giant protocluster of galaxies at redshift z = 5.7, when the Universe was only one billion years old. This protocluster occupies a volume of about 35x35x35 cubic co-moving megaparsecs. It is embedded in an even larger overdense region with at least 41 spectroscopically confirmed, luminous Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies (Lyman-alpha Emitters, or LAEs), including several previously reported LAEs. Its LAE density is 6.6 times the average density at z ~ 5.7. It is the only one of its kind in an LAE survey in four square degrees on the sky. Such a large structure is also rarely seen in current cosmological simulations. We report initial results from a large Gemini program to observe z>~5.7 quasars with GNIRS near-IR spectroscopy. Our sample includes 50 quasars with simultaneous ~0.85-2.5 micron spectra covering the rest-frame ultraviolet and major broad emission lines from Ly-alpha to MgII. We present spectral measurements for these quasars and compare to their lower-redshift counterparts at z=1.5-2.3. We find that when quasar luminosity is matched, there are no significant differences between the rest-UV spectra of z>~5.7 quasars and the low-z comparison sample. High-z quasars have similar continuum and emission line properties and occupy the same region in the black hole mass and luminosity space as the comparison sample, accreting at an average Eddington ratio of ~0.3. There is no evidence for super-Eddington accretion or hypermassive (>10^10 Msun) black holes within our sample. We find a mild excess of quasars with weak CIV lines relative to the control sample. Our results, corroborating earlier studies but with better statistics, demonstrate that these high-z quasars are already mature systems of accreting supermassive black holes operating with the same physical mechanisms as those at lower redshifts., Comment: replaced with the accepted version (ApJ); improved the fitting results and replaced all figures and tables (w/ minor changes); conclusions unchanged

We report a synchronized kinematic shift of CIV and SiIV broad absorption lines (BAL) in a high-ionization, radio-loud, and X-ray bright quasar SDSS-J092345+512710 (at $z_{em} \sim 2.1627$). This quasar shows two broad absorption components (blue component at $v \sim 14,000\ km\ s^{-1}$, and red component at $v \sim 4,000\ km\ s^{-1}$ with respect to the quasars systemic redshift). The absorption profiles of CIV and SiIV BAL of the blue component show decrease in outflow velocity with an average deceleration rate of $-1.62_{-0.05}^{+0.04}\ cm\ s^{-2}$ and $-1.14^{+0.21}_{-0.22}\ cm\ s^{-2}$ over a rest-frame time-span of 4.15 yr. We do not see any acceleration-like signature in the red component. This is consistent with dramatic variabilities usually seen at high velocities. During our monitoring period the quasar has shown no strong continuum variability. The radiation mechanism of the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) remains an open question. Although their spectra are usually well fitted with the empirical Band function, which is widely believed to be fully non-thermal and interpreted as an optically thin synchrotron emission, accumulating evidence shows that a thermal component actually exists. In this paper, a multi-color blackbody (mBB) model is proposed for the time-integrated spectrum of GRB 081221 by assuming a power-law distribution of the thermal luminosities with temperature, which manifests photospheric emissions from a different radius and/or angle. The effects of the minimum temperature $kT_{\min }$, the maximum temperature $kT_{\max }$ and the power law index $m$ of the luminosity distribution of an mBB are discussed. The fitting to the time-integrated spectrum during the bright phase (from 20s to 30s since the trigger) of GRB 081221 by the mBB model yields $kT_{\min }$ = $4.4\pm 0.3$ keV, $kT_{\max }$ = 57.0 $_{-1.4}^{+1.6}$ keV, and $m=-0.46_{-0.06}^{+0.05}$. When the time bin is small enough, the time-resolved spectra of GRB 081221 are well fitted with a series of single-temperature blackbodies. Our results imply the prompt emission of GRB 081221 is dominated by the photosphere emission and its time-integrated spectrum is a superposition of pure blackbody components at different times, indicating that some empirical Band spectra may be interpreted as mBB if the temperature is widely distributed., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ, 23 pages, 6 figures
