A personal narrative is presented which explores the author's experience of decolonising library in P–12 school in Queensland and modernising library collection reflect current knowledge and do not perpetuate stereotypes and racism.

The article reports that Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) capstone project at the University of Washington School was to help weed the Washington State Anytime Library to patrons of the Washington Digital Library Consortium (WDLC), a group of forty-five public libraries in Washington state, using the OverDrive Libby interface. The stereotype of the "behind the scenes" technical services librarian lends credence to the idea that librarians working in cataloging, acquisitions, collection development, etc., work alone and independently, never to face the patron or engage with their colleagues. Though that exaggerated typecast may still live on in the minds of some, the more contemporary and holistic approach to library organization, where librarians in all subfields benefit from a cross-sectional skillset, has necessitated that all librarians master the soft skills needed to work well with the patron and with others. This study examines both the frequency with which librarians in technical services interact with others in the course of their job duties as well as the nature and importance of soft skills in the academic library technical services workplace. Collection management in libraries has evolved alongside the developments of the new technologies effecting libraries. As digital collections are increasingly becoming the preferred resources by remote library users, librarians are faced with the challenge of proving a seamless continuation of efficient accessibility to these digital collections over time. This study aims to explore librarians' understanding of the sustainability of digital collections, the criteria for its fulfilment, and their perspectives on the accrued benefits of the practice. The study employs a qualitative approach, with purposive sampling of 25 experienced librarians and library ICT personnel from three federal universities in Nigeria. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups discussions were used in the data collection. Result reveals that the academic librarians are insightful about what it means by sustaining digital collections in their respective universities. The themes generated are the provision of access, digitization, preservation, task functions, and services. The criteria to be achieved for the sustainability of digital collections, includes skilled manpower, professional development, defined roles, ICT infrastructure, funding, and maintenance. The movement for sustaining digital collections in academic libraries in Nigeria will benefit the library's reputation, improve the services offered, aid in the preservation of the collections, promote resource sharing, and reduce time and cost. The study suggests that academic librarians need ongoing training to keep them abreast of the latest technology for crucial understanding in a bid to sustain their digital collections. Academic libraries, in particular medical libraries, have been subject to constant change for many years, primarily influenced by ongoing digitization. This change had, and still has, effects above all, but not only, on the collection management of libraries. Electronic journals, e-books and databases have been state of the art in libraries for many years. Future research should focus on identifying more effective cost analytical tools and improving and refining existing cost measures such as excluding the fixed costs from the total costs for the cost per use analysis and including opportunity costs in library cost analyses. While archives and special collections continue to welcome unique and valuable resources, small academic libraries can struggle with how to manage donation offers intended for their main collections. There is a need to be selective considering falling print circulation, workload increases for library personnel, and space restrictions. Additionally, limited collections funds needed for more current and higher-demand resources can be strained by the higher processing costs of donated materials. These pressures are compounded by prospective donors seeking a home for items they no longer want, a perception that small academic libraries need all donations, and a lack of understanding about the qualifications and expertise of academic library workers. Clearly communicated and regularly reviewed guidelines can help discourage unwanted donations in ways that lessen alienating our patrons. This article provides a content analysis of donations webpages from small academic libraries in Canada to identify trends and provide support for libraries reviewing their own policies and procedures in an effort to manage donor expectations. Patrons' information consumption behaviors of print materials are influenced by their content and tangible characteristics. This quantitative study incorporates several content-based factors widely adopted in collection management practices as well as two physical dimension-related factors, including book size and number of pages, and applies a series of regression analyses to evaluate the relative impact of these factors on patrons' checkout versus in-library use decisions. The results suggest that shelf time and book size exhibit consistent and significant impact on patrons' use of print materials. These findings can shed further light on collection management practices and policies in academic libraries striving to provide patrons more usercentered collections and space. The paper proposes some considerations related to the contents of Chiara Faggiolani’s book Come un ministro per la cultura: Giulio Einaudi e le biblioteche nel sistema del libro (2020), dedicated to Giulio Einaudi’s intellectual and editorial personality, and focusing on the relationship between the ‘Dogliani project’ and the different environments of the Italian ‘book system’ of the early 1960s. The project, accomplished with the inauguration of the Luigi Einaudi Library in 1963, highlights the attempt to organically integrate architectural space, library collections and service management. What triggered this integration was Giulio Einaudi’s vision, shaped by his father’s passion for books and by the charisma and extraordinary intelligence of the members of the group called the ‘einaudiani’, who were the protagonists of the cultural season of a country, Italy, that was struggling to come to terms with massive cultural, economic, political and social transformations. The use of microphotography in libraries has its roots in the 1930s and 1940s. Microforms have served many functions within libraries and archives, primarily to save space and preserve scarcely used or rare materials. While the benefits to libraries are substantial, unfortunately microform materials are susceptible to damage and deterioration over time, resulting in a tremendous loss of information in libraries and archives across the world. Unfortunately, once damage to microforms occurs, it cannot be stopped, just slowed. This article discusses the efforts at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette's Edith Garland Dupré Library to manage significant damage to its microform holdings. Based on personal experiences and rooted in practices documented in the research literature, the author identifies best practices and remediation options for managing deteriorating microform collections in libraries and archives. Collective collections are multiple local collections described and/or managed as a single collection. Constructing, understanding, and operationalizing collective collections is an increasingly important aspect of collection management for many libraries. This article presents some general insights about collective collections, drawn from a series of studies conducted by OCLC. These insights identify salient characteristics of many collective collections and serve as a starting point for developing collective collection-based strategies for such library priorities as shared print, digitization, and group-scale discovery and fulfillment. This prestige study surveyed full-time faculty of American Library Association (ALA)--accredited programs in library and information studies regarding library and information science (LIS) journals. Faculty were asked to rate a list of eighty-nine LIS journals on a scale from 1 to 5 based on each journal's importance to their research and teaching. Mean and mode calculations were used to rank results. Additionally, LIS faculty were asked to list the five most prestigious journals to be published in for tenure and promotion purposes at their institution. Several journals were rated highly by each method. LIS faculty ratings of LIS journals are useful for assessing journal quality not only for decisions regarding collection management but for tenure and promotion as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As part of a larger collections analysis study, this project outlines why a particular, underserved museum unit at the Smithsonian Institution is underutilizing the Smithsonian Libraries' facilities and resources, and how the library can better support this unit's unique research needs. Using a holistic methodology that weds quantitative and qualitative approaches, this study highlights the unit's distinct research profile that includes the various logistical, emotional, and collectionrelated barriers that impede their usage of the Libraries. Findings from this study signal the utility of a holistic, user-centric methodology to gather pertinent data and facilitate ongoing, interpersonal dialogues between the Smithsonian Libraries and its diverse internal users. Stephen Krashen believes that schools can counter the effects of poverty in at least one area: access to books. However, little research has been done to determine whether students living in poverty have access to school library services comparable to those attending schools with low concentrations of students living in poverty. We examined the school library access gap; namely, the differences in school library characteristics (staffing, books added to collection, schedule, and number of days closed) in schools with various concentrations of students living in poverty. Alarmingly, we found that the students in most need--those attending schools with the highest concentrations of students living in poverty--had the fewest school library resources to draw on. Findings suggest that if we hope to close achievement gaps between high and low socioeconomic groups, we must attend to the access gap in school libraries in high- and low-poverty schools. As library collections increasingly become digital, libraries are faced with many challenges regarding the acquisition and management of electronic resources. Some of these challenges include copyright and fair use, the first-sale doctrine, licensing versus ownership, digital preservation, long-term archiving, and, most important, the issue of rising cost. How can public libraries continue to justify the rising cost of acquiring and maintaining digital resources? Can use justify cost? In this article, we report on a case study that describes a public library approach to the acquisition and management of digital resources. The Tulsa City-County Library has established a special committee to evaluate electronic resources and make decisions regarding existing and potential resources. Libraries contract with vendors to provide shelf-ready material, but is it really shelf-ready? It arrives with all the physical processing needed for immediate shelving, then lingers in back offices while staff conduct item- by-item checks against the catalog. CatQC, a console application for Microsoft Windows developed at the University of Florida, builds on OCLC services to get material to the shelves and into the hands of users without delay and without sacrificing data quality. Using standard C programming, CatQC identifies problems in MARC record files, often applying complex conditionals, and generates easy-to-use reports that do not require manual item review. Digital tool making offers many challenges, involving much trial and error. Developing machine learning and assistance in automated and semi-automated internet resource discovery, metadata generation, and rich-text identification provides opportunities for great discovery, innovation, and the potential for transformation of the library community. The areas of computer science involved, as applied to the library applications addressed, are among that discipline's leading edges. Making applied research practical and applicable, through placement within library/collection-management systems and services, involves equal parts computer scientist, research librarian, and legacy-systems archaeologist. Still, the early harvest is there for us now, with a large harvest pending. Data Fountains and iVia, the projects discussed, demonstrate this. Clearly, then, the present would be a good time for the library community to more proactively and significantly engage with this technology and research, to better plan for its impacts, to more proactively take up the challenges involved in its exploration, and to better and more comprehensively guide effort in this new territory. The alternative to doing this is that others will develop this territory for us, do it not as well, and sell it back to us at a premium. Awareness of this technology and its current capabilities, promises, limitations, and probable major impacts needs to be generalized throughout the library management, metadata, and systems communities. Traditional, larger libraries can rely on their physical collection, coffee shops, and study rooms as ways to entice patrons into their library. Yet virtual libraries merely have their online presence to attract students to resources. This can only be achieved by providing a fully functional site that is well designed and organized, allowing patrons to navigate and locate information easily. One such technology significantly improving the overall usefulness of Web sites is a content management system (CMS). Although the CMS is not a novel technology per se, it is a technology smaller libraries cannot afford to ignore. In the fall of 2004, the Northcentral University Electronic Learning Resources Center (ELRC), a small, virtual library, moved from a static to a database-driven Web site. The article focuses on the collection management in the library system. The purpose of the article is to highlight the leadership in formulating the concepts that underlay the evolution from book selection into collection building and subsequently, into collection development and collection management during the past seventy-five years. Collection development is a part of collection management that primarily has to do with decisions leading to both the acquisition of tangible sources of information and the leasing of intangible sources.

Prior to 1997, the University of Oxford in Great Britain had approximately one hundred autonomous libraries with little coordination of services, collection development, or management among them. In that year a new director was hired with the mandate to integrate many of these libraries into one centralized system. Over the past seven years Oxford's libraries have been reorganized; the restructuring has consolidated a number of previously independent libraries and changed the way library service is provided at Oxford. This longitudinal case study is based on visits to the libraries, interviews with participants, and examination of relevant print and electronic resources. This paper describes the findings of a national survey of local music collection managers in Canadian libraries in 2018. The survey aims to capture a snapshot of local music collection management practices by identifying areas where collection managers make use of specialized skills and competencies and where practices may be improved. An online questionnaire was sent to local music collection managers in Canadian libraries and consisted of 20 questions that addressed demographics, collection scope, collection development, promotion, access, and preservation. The results show that local music collections are diverse in scope and include a wide range of formats. Many include archival materials or are described or organized using archival principles. Collection managers use a range of strategies to build and develop local music collections, including working with community members and donors to identify, select, and purchase collection materials. Collections are used most frequently by community members and researchers to conduct scholarly or historical research. Outreach and promotion are areas where collection managers are using diverse strategies, including community engagement, event hosting, and online marketing, to build awareness of collections. Physical and digital preservation practices are being implemented by most participants, and online access to collections is often available through additional collection description or digitization. Collection managers may face challenges due to the unique nature of local music collections. Strategies for collection management, collection development, outreach, or promotion may fall outside traditional professional skill sets or competencies. The concept of collection is of crucial importance for libraries, museums and archives. Defining some clear criteria for documents belonging to one or another of the collections is closely related to the organization of knowledge included in them and has a direct impact on information access. These criteria are necessary more than ever under the existing conditions of digital collections. To this effect, the collection management becomes meaningful to a major extent. The paper will analyze by means of argumentation and examples, the necessity of separating the collections, will present membership criteria of document sets to particular collections and will approach the problem of customizing access to them. This article aims to call attention to the importance of publicizing the innovation process in Brazil by working with the following idea: the collection and management of information and knowledge of ordinary citizen can be seen as a tool to increase the innovative capacity of the country. A short review of the literature on the contemporaneous dynamics characteristic of the new economic-technological paradigm of information was carried out, studies were collected on the involvement of the ordinary citizen in the innovation process, and models developed aimed at the systematization of newness were disputed. The authors conclude that Brazil, by not publicizing innovation, that is, to contemplate the free and public flow of ideas, information and experiences may be faling to promote its innovation potential. In order to investigate the perception of those responsible for the libraries of the campuses of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Bahia (IFBA) regarding the procedures for training and development of informational material's collection authority and the comparison between this perception and the precepts of it's field's literature, a survey of the population of representatives of lib raries of the institution was carried out, methodologically characterized as exploratory in relation to the objectives, quantitative in relation to the problem approach. Initially, it is conjectured that, from the point of view of the representatives of these libraries, the theoretical basis of the topic was used sparingly and not agreed to the construction of collaborative informational collection of the units, despite the multicampi structure of IFBA. The results, obtained from the related data analysis through the proposed Macnaughton and Stochastic Oscillator of Wilder Jr., pointed to some moderate employment for some variables, a robust employment for others and, for the rest, the employability of the theoretical and conceptual teaching about the management of how the information collection is fragile. Technical processing means library technical services and maintenance activities of a library's collection. Behind the-scenes activities that a library undertakes to process library materials loaned for the public. Most technical services operations covered ordering, claiming and receipt of materials; cataloging, classification of materials; and serials control. Other technical services include the activities related to acquiring donated materials, and repairing and preservation of library materials. I have been studied technical processing of the five private university libraries of Assam. Academic libraries face many challenges in collecting and maintaining streaming videos, particularly as demand for this unique format continues to increase. At the Oviatt Library at California State University, Northridge, it was determined that streaming video activity needed to be examined and that there was a strong need to develop a workflow for incoming video requests. A Video Streaming Decision Tree Committee composed of librarians and staff from various units within the library including collection development, acquisitions, cataloging, and music and media. Its charge was to create a decision tree workflow for incoming streaming video requests. The committee designed and implemented a detailed decision tree that accounts for many of the complexities of streaming video.
