We prove local-in-time a-priori estimates in $H^{-1}(\mathbb{R})$ for a family of generalized Korteweg--de Vries equations. This is the first estimate for any non-integrable perturbation of the KdV equation that matches the regularity of the sharp well-posedness theory for KdV. In particular, we show that our analysis applies to models for long waves in a shallow channel of water with an uneven bottom. The proof of our main result is based upon a bootstrap argument for the renormalized perturbation determinant coupled with a local smoothing norm.

Direct and inverse initial-boundary problems on a bounded interval for systems of quasilinear evolution equations with general nonlinearities are considered. In the case of inverse problems conditions of integral overdetermination are introduced and right-hand sides of equations of special types are chosen as controls. In this paper, we consider a generalized two component Camassa-Holm system. Based on local well-posedness results and lifespan estimates, we establish sharpness of continuity on the data-to-solution map by showing that it is not uniformly continuous from product Sobolev spaces $H^s \times H^{s}$ to $C([0,T]; H^s \times H^{s})$. The proof of nonuniform dependence is based upon approximate solutions.

In this paper we study the effect of rotation on nonlinear wave phenomena in weakly dispersive media modeled by the Korteweg-de Vries equation on the real line. It is well known that smoothing in the case of the KdV equation with periodic boundary conditions is a result of the presence of high frequency waves that weaken the nonlinearity through time averaging, \cite{bit}, \cite{et1}. High frequency interactions through normal form transformations can be thought of as adding a fast rotating term in certain toy PDE models that arrest the development of singularities, \cite{bit}. It is crucial for this phenomena that the zero Fourier mode can be removed due to the conservation of the mean. On the real line this mechanism breaks down as the resonance sets close to zero frequency are sizable and normal form transformations are not useful, \cite{imt}, and hence smoothing fails. The model we study is a perturbation of the KdV equation on a rotating frame of reference. A combination of a suitable normal form transformation along with the restricted norm method of Bourgain \cite{Bou2} implies smoothing on the real line., Comment: 17 pages

We prove local well-posedness of the Benjamin-Ono equation for a class of bounded initial data including periodic and bore-like functions. As a consequence, we obtain local well-posedness in $H^s(\mathbb{R})+H^\sigma(\mathbb{T})$ for $s>\frac{1}{2}$ and $\sigma>\frac{7}{2}$. We consider the real-valued defocusing modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (mKdV) on the circle. Based on the complete integrability of mKdV, Killip-Vi\c{s}an-Zhang (2018) discovered a conserved quantity which they used to prove low regularity a priori bounds for solutions. In this paper, we prove well-posedness in $C^1(\mathbb{R})$ (a.k.a. classical solutions) of the Fornberg-Whitham equation. To achieve this objective, we study its weak formulation under a Lagrangian framework. Applying the fundamental theorem of ordinary differential equations to the generated semi-linear system, we then construct a unique solution to the equation that is continuously dependent on the initial data. These results improve upon others in Sobolev and Besov spaces.

The initial value problem is considered for a higher order nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with quadratic nonlinearity. Results on existence and uniqueness of weak solutions are obtained. In the case of an effective at infinity additional damping large-time decay of solutions without any smallness assumptions is also established. Initial-boundary value problems on a half-strip with different types of boundary conditions for the generalized Kawahara-Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation with nonlinearity of higher order are considered. In particular, nonlinearity can be quadratic and cubic. Results on global existence and uniqueness in classes of weak and strong solutions and large-time decay of small solutions are established. The solutions are considered in weighted at infinity Sobolev spaces. The use of weighted spaces is crucial for the study. To this end new interpolating inequalities in weighted anisotropic Sobolev spaces are established. In this paper, we consider the convergence problem of the Kawahara equation \begin{eqnarray*} &&u_{t}+\alpha\partial_{x}^{5}u+\beta\partial_{x}^{3}u+\partial_{x}(u^{2})=0 \end{eqnarray*} on the real line with rough data. Firstly, by using Strichartz estimates as well as high-low frequency idea, we establish two crucial bilinear estimates, which are just Lemmas 3.1-3.2 in this paper; we also present the proof of Lemma 3.3 which shows that $s>-\frac{1}{2}$ is necessary for Lemma 3.2. Given smooth step-like initial data $V(0,x)$ on the real line, we show that the Korteweg--de Vries equation is globally well-posed for initial data $u(0,x) \in V(0,x) + H^{-1}(\mathbb{R})$. The proof uses our general well-posedness result for exotic spatial asymptotics. As a prerequisite, we show that KdV is globally well-posed for $H^3(\mathbb{R})$ perturbations of step-like initial data. Given a suitable solution $V(t,x)$ to the Korteweg--de Vries equation on the real line, we prove global well-posedness for initial data $u(0,x) \in V(0,x) + H^{-1}(\mathbb{R})$. Our conditions on $V$ do include regularity but do not impose any assumptions on spatial asymptotics. We show that periodic profiles $V(0,x) \in H^5(\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})$ satisfy our hypotheses. In particular, we can treat localized perturbations of the much-studied periodic traveling wave solutions (cnoidal waves) of KdV. In our companion paper we show that smooth step-like initial data also satisfy our hypotheses. In this paper, we study the Gibbs measures for periodic generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations (gKdV) with quartic or higher nonlinearities. In order to bypass the analytical ill-posedness of the equation in the Sobolev support of the Gibbs measures, we establish deterministic well-posedness of the gauged gKdV equations within the framework of the Fourier-Lebesgue spaces. Our argument relies on bilinear and trilinear Strichartz estimates adapted to the Fourier-Lebesgue setting. Then, following Bourgain's invariant measure argument, we construct almost sure global-in-time dynamics and show invariance of the Gibbs measures for the gauged equations. These results can be brought back to the ungauged side by inverting the gauge transformation and exploiting the invariance of the Gibbs measures under spatial translations. In this paper we prove instability of the soliton for the focusing, mass-critical generalized KdV equation. In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for the generalized KdV equation with rough data and random data. We study the well-posedness of the complex-valued modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (mKdV) on the circle at low regularity. In our previous work (2019), we introduced the second renormalized mKdV equation, based on the conservation of momentum, which we proposed as the correct model to study the complex-valued mKdV outside of $H^\frac12(\mathbb{T})$. Here, we employ the method introduced by Deng-Nahmod-Yue (2019) to prove local well-posedness of the second renormalized mKdV equation in the Fourier-Lebesgue spaces $\mathcal{F}L^{s,p}(\mathbb{T})$ for $s\geq \frac12$ and $1\leq p <\infty$. As a byproduct of this well-posedness result, we show ill-posedness of the complex-valued mKdV without the second renormalization for initial data in these Fourier-Lebesgue spaces with infinite momentum., Comment: 45 pages

We study the complex-valued modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (mKdV) on the circle. We first consider the real-valued setting and show global well-posedness of the (usual) renormalized mKdV equation in the Fourier-Lebesgue spaces. In the complex-valued setting, we observe that the momentum plays an important role in the well-posedness theory. In particular, we prove that the complex-valued mKdV equation is ill-posed in the sense of non-existence of solutions when the momentum is infinite, in the spirit of the work on the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation by Guo-Oh (2018). This non-existence result motivates the introduction of the second renormalized mKdV equation, which we propose as the correct model in the complex-valued setting outside of $H^\frac12(\mathbb{T})$. Furthermore, imposing a new notion of finite momentum for the initial data, at low regularity, we show existence of solutions to the complex-valued mKdV equation. We consider the Cauchy problem of the modified KdV equation (mKdV). Local well-posedness of this problem is obtained in modulation spaces $M^{1/4}_{2,q}(\mathbb{{R}})$ $(2\leq q\leq\infty)$. Moreover, we show that the data-to-solution map fails to be $C^3$ continuous in $M^{s}_{2,q}(\mathbb{{R}})$ when $s<1/4$. It is well-known that $H^{1/4}$ is a critical Sobolev space of mKdV so that it is well-posedness in $H^s$ for $s\geq 1/4$ and ill-posed (in the sense of uniform continuity) in $H^{s'}$ with $s'<1/4$. We study well-posedness of the complex-valued modified KdV equation (mKdV) on the real line. In particular, we prove local well-posedness of mKdV in modulation spaces $M^{2,p}_{s}(\mathbb{R})$ for $s \ge \frac14$ and $2\leq p < \infty$. For $s < \frac 14$, we show that the solution map for mKdV is not locally uniformly continuous in $M^{2,p}_{s}(\mathbb{R})$. Preliminary results about Lie and potential symmetries of a class of Korteweg-de Vries type equations are presented. In order to prove existence of potential symmetries three different systems of so called determining equations are analysed. It is shown that two systems lead only to Lie symmetries while the third system produces potential symmetries provided the equation in question has an appropriate structure

We consider the Cauchy problem associated with the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation, posed on $\mathbb{T}^2$. We prove the local well-posedness for given data in $H^s(\mathbb{T}^2)$ whenever $s>5/3$. More importantly, we prove that this equation is of quasi-linear type for initial data in any Sobolev space on the torus, in sharp contrast with its semi-linear character in the $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{T}$ settings.

We prove global well-posedness of the Korteweg--de Vries equation for initial data in the space $H^{-1}(R)$. This is sharp in the class of $H^{s}(R)$ spaces. Even local well-posedness was previously unknown for $s<-3/4$. The proof is based on the introduction of a new method of general applicability for the study of low-regularity well-posedness for integrable PDE, informed by the existence of commuting flows. In particular, as we will show, completely parallel arguments give a new proof of global well-posedness for KdV with periodic $H^{-1}$ data, shown previously by Kappeler and Topalov, as well as global well-posedness for the 5th order KdV equation in $L^2(R)$. Additionally, we give a new proof of the a priori local smoothing bound of Buckmaster and Koch for KdV on the line. Moreover, we upgrade this estimate to show that convergence of initial data in $H^{-1}(R)$ guarantees convergence of the resulting solutions in $L^2_\text{loc}(R\times R)$. Thus, solutions with $H^{-1}(R)$ initial data are distributional solutions.

Multisoliton solutions of the KdV equation satisfy nonlinear ordinary differential equations which are known as stationary equations for the KdV hierarchy, or sometimes as Lax-Novikov equations. An interesting feature of these equations, known since the 1970's, is that they can be explicitly integrated, by virtue of being finite-dimensional completely integrable Hamiltonian systems. Here we use the integration theory to investigate the question of whether the multisoliton solutions are the only nonsingular solutions of these ordinary differential equations which vanish at infinity. In particular we prove that this is indeed the case for $2$-soliton solutions of the fourth-order stationary equation.

We analyze the gKdV equation, a generalized version of Korteweg-de Vries with an arbitrary function $f(u)$. In general, for a function $f(u)$ the Lie algebra of symmetries of gKdV is the $2$-dimensional Lie algebra of translations of the plane $xt$. This implies the existence of plane wave solutions. Indeed, for some specific values of $f(u)$ the equation gKdV admits a Lie algebra of symmetries of dimension grater than $2$. We compute the similarity reductions corresponding to these exceptional symmetries. We prove that the gKdV equation has soliton-like solutions under some general assumptions, and we find a closed formula for the plane wave solutions, that are of hyperbolic secant type., Comment: 12 pages

In this paper, we prove well-posedness of the Fornberg-Whitham equation in Besov spaces $B_{2,r}^s$ in both the periodic and non-periodic cases. This will imply the existence and uniqueness of solutions in the aforementioned spaces along with the continuity of the data-to-solution map provided that the initial data belongs to $B_{2,r}^s $. We also establish sharpness of continuity on the data-to-solution map by showing that it is not uniformly continuous from any bounded subset of $B_{2,r}^s$ to $C([-T,T]; B^s_{2,r})$.
