Albert Ladenburg (1842-1911) was an outstanding German chemist and historian of chemistry of the second half of the 19th century. He ascertained the formula of ozone as O3 and proposed a triangular prism structure for the molecule of benzene. He studied the structure of aromatic hydrocarbons and organic compounds of silicon and tin, and devoted his work to explaining the structure of alkaloids and their synthesis. The purpose of this paper is to familiarize readers with the important events in the life of Ladenburg and his writing and research activities, in particular some of his experimental results, as well as his selected publications.

This study investigated differences between students' perceptions of their best teachers in primary and higher education in Poland. Teacher behavior was conceptualized in terms of the teacher-student interpersonal relationship and described in terms of eight behavioral sectors ? leadership, helpful/friendly, understanding, student responsibility/freedom, uncertain, dissatisfied, admonishing and strict ? and two independent dimensions called Influence (teacher dominance vs. submission) and Proximity (teacher cooperation vs. opposition). Data were gathered from 199 higher education students, 173 students from a higher vocational institute and 26 students from one university, and 105 primary education students. Results indicate that while preferred teaching in Poland is perceived in a similar fashion as in other countries, differences can be found across the educational contexts of interest.

It is a survey of literature concerning both life and scientific activity of Nikolai Nikolaevich Zinin. Special attention is paid to his epoch-making discovery made by him in 1842 and his chemical works published in 1839-1880. This survey is supplemented with: 1) names of the authors of Zinin’s biographies, biographical notes, and references to him, 2) information about Zinin’s works bibliography, 3) description of the selected facts of his life.

The purpose of this article was to familiarize readers with burning lenses, which were used by 18th century by some English and French chemists as a means of reaching high temperatures. However, not all experiments have given satisfactory results. The failures in the melting platinum using various burning lenses led Lavoisier to develop a new method of melting platinum using oxygen. In addition, in this article a literature was reviewed, including books on chemistry and the history of chemistry published in various countries to discuss the problem of oxygen discovery by Joseph Priestley (1733-1804), Carl Wilhelm Scheele (1742-1786) and Antoine Laurent Lavoisier (1743-1794).

His life and scientific achievements were described in the literature published between the 19th and 21st centuries in different countries. The purpose of this article was to familiarize readers with the important events in the life of C.-L. Berthollet and his research activities, in particular some of his experimental research results, as well as his selected publications. In addition, the names of authors of biographies or biographical notes about Claude-Louis Berthollet, published in 1823-2018 were presented.

W pracy zaprezentowano wyniki z badania, którego celem było rozpoznanieopinii studentów wychowania fizycznego wobec form rasizmu i dyskryminacjirasowej, przejawianych przez kibiców. Dla jego realizacji, na podstawieanalizy literatury przedmiotu, opracowano kwestionariusz „Rasizm stadionowy”,który pozwolił, w miarę całościowo, opisać poglądy studentów, przyszłych nauczycieli,o znanych z praktyki formach rasizmu i dyskryminacji rasowej, przejawianychprzez kibiców na stadionach. Wśród nich były powszechnie uważane za obelżyweprzyśpiewki, piosenki, okrzyki, skandowania, naklejki, napisy oraz symbole eksponowanena transparentach i flagach. Starano się rozpoznać psychologiczne wartościstudentów w kategoriach obraźliwe/nieobraźliwe, przynoszące wstyd Polsce/klubowipiłkarskiemu oraz akceptację przez nich mowy nienawiści, przyjmując eksponowanieróżnych form rasizmu i dyskryminacji rasowej przez kibiców jako pomysłowe.Analiza zebranych danych ukazała sprzeciw większości studentów, przyszłych nauczycieliwychowania fizycznego, wobec przejawów ksenofobii, rasizmu i dyskrymi-nacji na polskich stadionach. Przejawianie takich zachowań dla około 60% badanychjest niedopuszczalne, albowiem przynoszą one wstyd Polsce i klubom piłkarskim.Zaobserwowane różnice w opiniach studentów i studentek były zauważalne (na niekorzyśćstudentów), aczkolwiek nieistotne statystycznie. Uzyskane wyniki mogą byćwykorzystane w praktyce kształcenia przyszłych nauczycieli nie tylko wychowaniafizycznego, w realizacji zadań, dotyczących przygotowania ucznia do roli kibica,i manifestowania akceptowanych społecznie zachowań podczas imprez sportowych.

Vladimir Nikolayevich Ipatieff (1867–1952) was one of the most prominent chemists of the first half of the 20th century. He studied catalytic processes in organic chemistry. His discoveries include, among others, the explanation of the structure of isoprene, the method of obtaining butadiene from ethanol, dehydrogenation of alcohols to aldehydes and ketones, dehydration of alcohols to alkenes, including ethanol to ethylene, hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexane, polymerization of ethylene in the presence of various catalysts. Much of his experimental studies were carried out at high pressure in a rotating autoclave, the so-called “Ipatieff bomb”. The purpose of this article was to familiarize readers with important events in the life of V. N. Ipatieff and his research activities, in particular with selected results of his experimental studies. In addition, the statements by American and Russian chemists about V. N. Ipatieff and his research were presented.

This is a survey of the literature concerning the empiric rule developed by Vladimir Vasilyevich Markovnikov in 1869 and its various, unauthentic versions, which are available in the organic chemistry textbooks published in the XX and XXI centuries. This survey is supplemented with: 1) information about Markovnikov’s chemical research, 2) selected facts of his life.

In this article, the author reviews literature concerning the great Mendeleev’s achievements in the seventies of the XIX century, i.e. discovery of the periodic law and fulfillment of his early predictions of unknown elements. Special attention was paid to the references concerning these achievements by chemists – authors of the English, German, and French chemical books in 1871 – 1917. This review was enriched with: 1) selected facts from Mendeleev’s life and scientific activity; 2) Mendeleev’s stay abroad and participation in some celebrities, and 3) a list of the authors of his biography in Russia and other countries in the world.

In this article the literature on Carl Wilhelm Scheele (1742-1786) is reviewed, including books on chemistry and the history of chemistry, published between the 18th and the 21st century in different countries in order to: 1) familiarize readers with the names of authors of biographies and biographical notes about Carl Wilhelm Scheele, published in books in 1833-2017, 2) discusse the priority problem for the discovery of oxygen by Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) and Scheele, 3) familiarize readers with literature sources regarding Scheele's letter to Antoine Laurent Lavoisier (1743-1794), written on September 30, 1774, 4) show the causes of Scheele’s premature death, 5) familiarize readers with opinions about Scheele expressed by chemists in 1819-1942. To convey the atmosphere in which the authors of books in various countries created them, as well as to express their feelings about Scheele, and in order to avoid unintentional transformations of their thoughts, in this article, authors words are quoted in literal wording. Their reading may be helpful in the education of the students of chemistry, because looking at certain issues through the prism of the history of science will certainly facilitate the acquisition and understanding the knowledge by them. This article will be a source of reflection regarding the history of chemistry, in which Scheele, Priestley and Lavoisier were active.

The purpose of the study described in this paper was investigated students' expectations with respect to physical distance between people, objects and animals in different situations. Data were gathered from 263 students (131 females, 132 males) from the Humanistic Institute in Walbrzych Higher Vocational College (PWSZ) and from the Faculty of Physical Education in Pawel Wlodkowic University College in Plock Higher School (SWPW). Students were conducted their studies as a part of bachelors degree. In this study we used 22- items Polish version of the IPROX questionnaires developed by Hogh-Olesen (2008), in which subjects in simulated situations were instructed to place humans, objects, and animals' in relation to other representatives of their category. Results indicate that IPROX questionnaire were very useful in assessing of the physical distance declared by students. With regard to student sex disclosed statistically significant differences the declared distances only in four situations. In every of them the male students declared significantly longer distance, than female students. A comparative analysis of average distances declared by the subjects from Greenland, Denmark, Italy, Cameroon and India [Hogh-Olesen, 2008] as well as Polish students showed existence cross-cultural differences.

This article presents the results of a study whose aim was the assessment of social distance in relation to symptoms of discrimination in the first and second years of Physical Education (bachelor’s degree) students’ declarations. To realize this aim, the authors used the Polish version of Questionnaire “Social Distance – DS,” worked out on the basis of the original Bogardus social distance scale. Results showed that students declared the smallest social distance in relation to Catholics (M = 2,03, SD = 1,76 – “adherents of religions” category) and the biggest in relation to Roma people (Gypsies) (M = 5,36, SD = 1,99 – “persons from definite ethnic and regional group” category). The difference between mean ratings of social distance declared by male and female students in relation to gay men turned out to be statistically significant on level p < 0,05. The mean rating declared by male students turned out higher from the mean rating declared by female students.

The prospect of manned space missions outside Earth's orbit is limited by the travel time and shielding against cosmic radiation. The chemical rockets currently used in the space program have no hope of propelling a manned vehicle to a far away location such as Mars due to the enormous mass of fuel that would be required. The specific energy available from nuclear fuel is a factor of 106 higher than chemical fuel; it is therefore obvious that nuclear power production in space is a must. On the other hand, recent considerations to send a man to the Moon for a long stay would require a stable, secured and safe source of energy (there is hardly anything beyond nuclear power that would provide a useful and reliably safe sustainable supply of energy). National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) anticipates that the mass of a shielding material required for long travel to Mars is the next major design driver. In 2006 NASA identified a need to assess and evaluate potential gaps in existing knowledge and understanding of the level and types of radiation critical to astronauts' health during the long travel to Mars and to start a comprehensive study related to the shielding design of a spacecraft finding the conditions for the mitigation of radiation components contributing to the doses beyond accepted limits. In order to reduce the overall space craft mass, NASA is looking for the novel, multi-purpose and multi-functional materials that will provide effective shielding of the crew and electronics on board. The Laboratory for Neutronics and Geometry Computation in the School of Nuclear Engineering at Purdue University led by Prof. Tatjana Jevremović began in 2004 the analytical evaluations of different lightweight materials. The preliminary results of the design survey study are presented in this paper.

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is an experimental therapy for tumors which is based on the nuclear reaction that occurs when 10B is irradiated with thermal neutrons. Calculations for BNCT with Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) take into account the thermal scattering treatment for hydrogen bound in bulk water for any organic tissue. However, in these tissues, hydrogen is also present in macromolecules (protein, lipids, etc.) and in confined water. Thermal scattering cross section for hydrogen in an organic tissue can be determined by calculating the scattering law S(α,β). This function can be obtained with the nuclear data processing system NJOY from the vibrational frequency spectrum of an atom in a molecular system. We performed calculations of the frequency spectrum from molecular dynamics simulations using the program GROMACS. Systems composed of a peptide in a water box were considered, with different proportions of water molecules. All-atom potentials for modeling this molecules were used in order to represent the internal vibrational normal modes for the atoms of hydrogen. The results showed several internal normal modes that in the case of hydrogen bound in bulk water do not appear.
