Abstract: Research in global change ecology relies heavily on global climatic grids derived from estimates of air temperature in open areas at around 2 m above the ground. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km2 resolution for 0-5 and 5-15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km2 pixels (summarized from 8519 unique temperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (-0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Nevertheless, we highlight the need to fill remaining geographic gaps by collecting more in situ measurements of microclimate conditions to further enhance the spatiotemporal resolution of global soil temperature products for ecological applications.

Abstract: Radial tree growth at high-elevation and high-latitude sites is predominantly controlled by changes in summer temperature. This relationship is, however, expected to weaken under projected global warming, which questions the reliability of tree-ring chronologies for climate reconstructions. Here, we examined the growth–climate response patterns of five tree-ring width (TRW) and maximum latewood density (MXD) chronologies of larch (Larix sibirica) from upper-treeline ecotones in the Altai Mountains, which is a key region for developing millennial-long dendroclimatic records in inner Eurasia. The TRW and MXD chronologies exhibited significant year-to-year coherency within and between the two parameters (p < 0.001). While TRW is mostly influenced by temperature changes during the first half of the growing season from June to July (r = 0.66), MXD is most strongly correlated with May–August temperatures (r = 0.73). All seasonal temperature signals are statistically significant at the 99% confidence level, temporally stable back to 1940 CE, the period with reliable instrumental measurements, and spatially representative for a vast area of inner Eurasia between northeastern Kazakhstan in the west, northern Mongolia in the east, southern Russia in the north and northwestern China in the south. Our findings demonstrate the paleoclimatic potential of TRW and especially MXD chronologies and reject any sign of the ´divergence problem´ at these high-elevation, mid-latitude larch sites. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km2 resolution for 0–5 and 5–15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km2 p ixels ( summarized f rom 8 519 u nique t emperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (−0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. 8. Features of Scots Pine Mortality Due to Incursion of Pine Bark Beetles in Symbiosis with Ophiostomatoid Fungi in the Forest-Steppe of Central Siberia.

Abstract: Forest decline is a significant issue affecting critical ecosystem processes worldwide. Here, we describe mortality in Pinus sylvestris L. monitored trees caused by the inhabitation of pine bark beetles (Tomicus minor Hart.) in symbiosis with ophiostomatoid fungi (Ophiostoma piceae (Munch) H. et P. Sydow) infection in the forest-steppe of central Siberia. Stem sap flow (Q) and stem diameter fluctuations (dRc) were monitored in eight pine trees during seven consecutive growing seasons (2015–2021). In addition, microcore sampling every ten days allowed the determination of stem wood formation in monitored trees in the 2021 growing season. During 2020 and 2021, two cases of Q termination were recorded among the monitored trees, with microcores revealing no cambium formation. Thus, the seasonal Q onset matches the beginning of the beetle dispersal period when they attack and inhabit tree stems. The decline of circumferential stem size began 10–12 days after Q onset, during the massive inhabitation of beetles into the stems. The disturbance of Q in trees occurred in 21–23 days, and total cessation of Q was observed 23–26 days after the Q onset at the beetle's egg development phase. The timing of dRc disturbance and Q cessation observed directly coincides with the beetle life cycle. Thus, the phenology of pine trees and T. minor beetles is driven by seasonal weather conditions, particularly the cumulative air temperature (>0 °C). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Research in global change ecology relies heavily on global climatic grids derived from estimates of air temperature in open areas at around 2 m above the ground. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km2 resolution for 0–5 and 5–15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km2 pixels (summarized from 8519 unique temperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (−0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Nevertheless, we highlight the need to fill remaining geographic gaps by collecting more in situ measurements of microclimate conditions to further enhance the spatiotemporal resolution of global soil temperature products for ecological applications.

Abstract: Research in global change ecology relies heavily on global climatic grids derived from estimates of air temperature in open areas at around 2 m above the ground. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km2 resolution for 0-5 and 5-15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km2 pixels (summarized from 8519 unique temperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (-0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Nevertheless, we highlight the need to fill remaining geographic gaps by collecting more in situ measurements of microclimate conditions to further enhance the spatiotemporal resolution of global soil temperature products for ecological applications.

Abstract: Divergent evolutionary pressures associated with differential reproductive costs in dioecious trees may lead to sex-related variation in non-reproductive functions. Sex-related differences may be site-dependent, with different outcomes depending on environmental conditions. We explored the effects of sex and environmental conditions on the climatic control of annual secondary growth and intra-annual wood density fluctuations (IADF) of a dioecious conifer (Juniperus thurifera L.) growing in two sites with contrasting hydrological conditions under a continental Mediterranean climate. Different sex-related strategies had variable effects on relative secondary growth, with females outperforming males under more favorable hydrological conditions, and males outperforming females under water-limited conditions. Ring width and IADF formation were driven by climatic factors occurring at different temporal scales. Tree-ring growth depended on factors acting prior to the initiation of the xylogenesis and to conditions directly affecting the duration and pace of cambial activity, and ring width, therefore, integrated a complex signal of factors occurring over a relatively long period, and on an annual cycle. In contrast, IADFs responded to singular short-term events that alleviated drought and promoted cambial reactivation during the summer arrest. Female trees showed a more opportunistic water use, displayed in the stronger ring-width response to June–July conditions. Enhanced cambial sensitivity in females set a lower threshold for IADF occurrence, leading to a higher frequency of IADFs irrespective of site. Intra-annual and inter-annual female growth patterns reflect an opportunistic strategy to benefit from favorable climatic windows.

Abstract: En este trabajo analizamos el efecto de la altitud, exposición y pendiente sobre la distribución de formas de vida de plantas en páramos ubicados inmediatamente sobre el límite del bosque en la Sierra Nevada de Mérida. A partir de una ampliación del sistema de clasificación propuesto por Hedberg (1964) para la alta montaña tropical, se definieron 14 formas de vida en esta zona ecotonal. Se observaron patrones claros de cambio en la cobertura de las formas de vida en función de la altitud y la exposición. Los árboles y los helechos disminuyeron drásticamente su cobertura con el aumento en la altitud y la distancia al bosque contínuo. Las rosetas caulescentes pubescentes y los arbustos esclerófilos con láminas foliares más pequeñas (leptófilos) presentaron coberturas más altas en las zonas de mayor elevación y en las laderas de exposición oeste, donde las condiciones ambientales pudieran ser más limitantes en términos del balance energético foliar. Para el desarrollo de modelos más mecanísticos de la dinámica del límite forestal en escenarios de cambio climático, nuestros resultados enfatizan la importancia de profundizar la comprensión de la diversidad de respuestas funcionales de las formas de vida presentes en la alta montaña tropical y de analizar los efectos de la interacción de la altitud con otras variables como la exposición sobre determinantes ambientales clave como la radiación incidente y la temperatura. In this paper we analyze the effect of altitude, aspect and slope on the distribution of plant life forms in open páramos located just above the treeline in the Sierra Nevada de Mérida. Using an adaptation of Hedberg’s (1964) classification scheme for tropical alpine environments, 14 life forms were defined for this ecotonal zone. We detected clear patterns of change in the abundance of life forms in terms of both altitude and aspect. Trees and ferns decreased in abundance abruptly with the increase in altitude and distance to the continuous forests. Pubescent caulescent rosettes and small leaved sclerophylous shrubs increased their cover at higher altitudes and in west facing slopes, where climatic conditions could be more limiting in terms of leaf energy balance. For the development of more mechanistic models of treeline dynamics in climate change scenarios, our results emphasize the importance of improving our understanding of the diversity of functional responses of life forms present in the highland tropics, and of analyzing the effects of the interaction of altitude with slope orientation on key environmental drivers such as incident radiation and temperature. 26-46 aarzac@gmail.com eulogio@ula.ve llambi@ula.ve raphael@ula.ve semestral

Abstract: Tree-ring anatomy reflects the year-by-year impact of environmental factors on tree growth. Up to now, research in this field has mainly focused on the hydraulic architecture, with ray parenchyma neglected despite the growing recognition of its relevance for xylem function. Our aim was to address this gap by exploring the potential of the annual patterns of xylem parenchyma as a climate proxy. We constructed ring-width and ray-parenchyma chronologies from 1965 to 2004 for 20 Juniperus thurifera trees growing in a Mediterranean continental climate. Chronologies were related to climate records by means of correlation, multiple regression and partial correlation analyses. Ray parenchyma responded to climatic conditions at critical stages during the xylogenetic process; namely, at the end of the previous year's xylogenesis (October) and at the onset of earlywood (May) and latewood formation (August). Ray parenchyma-based chronologies have potential to complement ring-width chronologies as a tool for climate reconstructions. Furthermore, medium- and low-frequency signals in the variation of ray parenchyma may improve our understanding of how trees respond to environmental fluctuations and to global change. © 2013 New Phytologist Trust.
