Abstract

L’objectif de ce projet de recherche est d’étudier les conséquences des travaux d’entretien du lit de la Loire sur plusieurs composantes de la biodiversité d’un ilot au sein des 13 hectares des iles de Mareau-aux-prés (Loiret). Dans l’optique de maintenir la capacité d’écoulement du fleuve, le Pôle Loire (DDT du Loiret) a dévégétalisé et arasé cet ilot en septembre 2012. La biodiversité présente sur cet ilot a été ainsi remise à zéro. Mais la dynamique naturelle du fleuve a apporté de nouveaux sédiments lors de l’hiver suivant et une nouvelle biodiversité et un nouvel assemblage de communautés se sont installés de novo, à partir de flux de populations provenant des autres ilots et berges. Ce projet multidisciplinaire est centré sur cette nouvelle dynamique de recolonisation. Nous présentons ici les résultats 5 ans après travaux, sur la biodiversité intra et interspécifique (via l’acquisition de données in situ et d’analyses génétiques et spatialisées) autour de quatre communautés : végétation herbacée, arbustive et arborescente, autochtone et exotique ; avifaune nicheuse des grèves ; castor et entomofaune coléoptère Carabidae en couplant ces données avec celles de la morphodynamique fluviale, variable chaque année., The Mareau-aux-Prés islands, along the Loire river, are characterized by a multiple channel pattern, where natural limestone riffles influence the morphology and spatial distribution of vegetated islands, secondary channels and alluvial bars. In September 2012, within these islands, the vegetation of the central 3 ha sandy-gravelly bar was uprooted and the bar level lowered in order to maintain the flow capacity of the river. A new sandy-gravelly bar appeared in spring 2013, ideal field support to study long-term ecological issues. A multidisciplinary research programme (‘BioMareau’ project) is currently being conducted from 2012 to 2019, focusing on physical and biological compartments. Field measurements on annual basis were performed on hydrosedimentary processes. Biotic components focus on colonization dynamics by Populus nigra seedlings (studying small-scale DNA spatial genetic structure and through plot survey), by native and invasive flora (through seed bank and summer inventories), by community assemblages of ground beetles Coleoptera Carabidae, by gravel nesting birds and on the consequence of the modification of the feeding habitat by the European beaver (as the island constituted the main source of wood). We will present 5 years of results after fluvial maintenance operations. The applied objectives of such study are to guide river managers in order to perform optimal useful management operations with a minimum loss of biodiversity.

Abstract

International audience; The Mareau-aux-Prés islands, along the Loire river are characterized by a multiple channel pattern, where natural limestone riffles influence the morphology and spatial distribution of vegetated islands and secondary channels. Within these islands, in september 2012, fluvial management operations (FMO) were launched. The vegetation of the central sandy-gravelly bar (3 ha area) was uprooted and the bar level lowered in order to maintain the flow capacity of the river. The FMO are equivalent to a natural important flood : a new bare mineral substrate has appeared and since spring 2013 followed the succession of geomorphic, pioneer and biogeomorphic phases in interactions between hydro-morphodynamics and Salicaceae vegetation.This sandy-gravelly bar is an ideal field support for studying long-term ecological issues. A multi-disciplinary research programme ('BioMareau' project) is currently being conducted from 2012 to 2019, focusing on interactions and feedbacks between biotic and abiotic components and, since 2017, on landscape evolution and perception.

Abstract

Live plants are often traded in winter or early spring when the number of pests is potentially low, in part because deciduous trees lack foliage. However, the pests that may be associated with traded dormant plant material are likely to be largely unknown. Pest risk assessments can only be performed for known pest species and it is therefore important to identify potential pests before they are moved to a new area. In addition, it is difficult to predict whether introduced pests, even if already well known, may shift host after their arrival. Several studies attempted to estimate the likelihood of host shifts using literature about known pest-host associations, but the number of pests in these studies was often limited and the data were unlikely collected in the same place and at the same time. To overcome these problems, we performed a global study which aimed at detecting potential insect pests and fungal pathogens on congeneric native and exotic woody plant species that belong to six studied tree genera. Sampling was done simultaneously in 33 countries around the world following a common sampling protocol. At each location, twenty 50 cm long, dormant twigs were collected from each tree species and kept in containers with water at room temperature. Emerged insects were collected and identified based on morphology and DNA barcoding of the mDNA COI region. Fungal DNA was extracted from pooled buds, twig parts and needles for species identification using a metabarcoding approach based on the rDNA ITS region. Here, we present preliminary results of this study and discuss them in the context of pest risk assessment.

Abstract

Knowing the phylogeographic structure of invasive species is important for understanding the underlying processes of invasion. The micromoth Phyllonorycter issikii, whose larvae damage leaves of lime trees Tilia spp., was only known from East Asia. In the last three decades, it has been recorded in most of Europe, Western Russia and Siberia. We used the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene region to compare the genetic variability of P. issikii populations between these different regions. Additionally, we sequenced two nuclear genes (28S rRNA and Histone 3) and run morphometric analysis of male genitalia to probe for the existence of cryptic species. The analysis of COI data of 377 insect specimens collected in 16 countries across the Palearctic revealed the presence of two different lineages: P. issikii and a putative new cryptic Phyllonorycter species distributed in the Russian Far East and Japan. In P. issikii, we identified 31 haplotypes among which 23 were detected in the invaded area (Europe) and 10 were found in its putative native range in East Asia (Russian Far East, Japan, South Korea and China), with only two common haplotypes. The high number of haplotypes found in the invaded area suggest a possible scenario of multiple introductions. One haplotype H1 was dominant (119 individuals, 67.2%), not only throughout its expanding range in Europe and Siberia but, intriguingly, also in 96% of individuals originating from Japan. We detected eight unique haplotypes of P. issikii in East Asia. Five of them were exclusively found in the Russian Far East representing 95% of individuals from that area. The putative new cryptic Phyllonorycter species showed differences from P. issikii for the three studied genes. However, both species are morphologically undistinguishable. They occur in sympatry on the same host plants in Japan (Sendai) and the Russian Far East (Primorsky krai) without evidence of admixture.

12. A P-glycoprotein is linked to resistance to the Bacillus thuringiensis Cry3Aa toxin in a leaf beetle

Abstract

Chrysomela tremula is a polyvoltine oligophagous leaf beetle responsible for massive attacks on poplar trees. This beetle is an important model for understanding mechanisms of resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) insecticidal toxins, because a resistant C. tremula strain has been found that can survive and reproduce on transgenic poplar trees expressing high levels of the Cry3Aa Bt toxin. Resistance to Cry3Aa in this strain is recessive and is controlled by a single autosomal locus. We used a larval midgut transcriptome for C. tremula to search for candidate resistance genes. We discovered a mutation in an ABC protein, member of the B subfamily homologous to P-glycoprotein, which is genetically linked to Cry3Aa resistance in C. tremula. Cultured insect cells heterologously expressing this ABC protein swell and lyse when incubated with Cry3Aa toxin. In light of previous findings in Lepidoptera implicating A subfamily ABC proteins as receptors for Cry2A toxins and C subfamily proteins as receptors for Cry1A and Cry1C toxins, this result suggests that ABC proteins may be targets of insecticidal three-domain Bt toxins in Coleoptera as well.

Abstract

En 2012, dans le cadre des travaux d'entretien de la Loire, un des îlots constituant la réserve naturelle de St-Mesmin (45) a été arasé. Dès 2013 une nouvelle formation sédimentaire s'est mise en place, reformant ainsi l'ilot détruit. Nous avons étudié l'impact entomologique de ce type de travaux sur l'ilot avant son arasement en suivant la dynamique de recolonisation durant la reformation de l'ilot. Les coléoptères Carabidae ont été choisis comme modèle. Ils représentent en effet un groupe largement utilisé dans les études de biodiversité et colonisent l'ensemble des habitats rivulaires et notamment les formations pionnières. Sur l'ilot, 4 habitats pionniers ont été sélectionnés avant et juste après l'arasement : les formations graveleuses sèches et humides, les formations sableuses sèches et les vasières. Les premiers résultats montrent que les Carabidae associés à ces milieux rivulaires pionniers se sont montrés particulièrement réactifs dans le processus de recolonisation de l'îlot arasé. Les espèces dominantes avant l'arasement sont de nouveau présentes et les plus abondantes après les travaux. Mais pour chacun des habitats étudiés, on observe une baisse de la richesse spécifique à la suite des travaux., Maintenance works are carried out on the Loire river. In this context, in 2012, one of the islands constituting the Nature Reserve of St-Mesmin (45) in France was leveled. Since 2013 a new sedimentary formation has been established, reforming the destroyed island. We studied the entomological impact of this work just after leveling. The colonization dynamic was monitored during the reformation of the island. We chose ground beetles as a model. Indeed, they are widely used in biodiversity studies and they colonize all riparian habitats including pioneer formations. We sampled four pioneer habitats on the island before and just after the leveling: dry and wet gravel, dry sand and mudflats. First results showed that ground beetles associated to these pioneer habitats were particularly reactive in the process of island recolonization. The dominant species before leveling have reappeared and have become equally abundant after the work. But for these habitats, we observe a decrease of species richness after leveling.

Abstract

International audience; Globally, the estimated total area planted with transgenic plants producing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxins was 12 million hectares in 2001. The risk of target pests becoming resistant to these toxins has led to the implementation of resistance-management strategies. The efficiency and sustainability of these strategies, including the high-dose plus refuge strategy currently recommended for North American maize, depend on the initial frequency of resistance alleles. In this study, we estimated the initial frequencies of alleles conferring resistance to transgenic Bt poplars producing Cry3A in a natural population of the poplar pest Chrysomela tremulae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). We used the F2 screen method developed for detecting resistance alleles in natural pest populations. At least three parents of the 270 lines tested were heterozygous for a major Bt resistance allele. We estimated mean resistance-allele frequency for the period 1999–2001 at 0.0037 (95% confidence interval = 0.000 45–0.0080) with a detection probability of 90%. These results demonstrate that (i) the F2 screen method can be used to detect major alleles conferring resistance to Bt-producing plants in insects and (ii) the initial frequency of alleles conferring resistance to Bt toxin can be close to the highest theoretical values that are expected prior to the use of Bt plants if considering fitness costs and typical mutation rates.

Abstract

International audience; The Loire, the last wild river in Western Europe, undergoes recurrent maintenance operations of bed to improve flow and to avoid reduction of the main stem. Thus, the territorial collectivities carried out levelling of one island in autumn 2012 in the Natural Reserve of Saint-Mesmin (France). We took advantage of this work to launch a long term survey of the island recolonization by plants, birds, beavers and insects. We report here the impact on insect populations taking ground beetles (Coleoptera : Carabidae) as a model study. We compared assemblages (communities) before and just after the levelling. Sampling was done with Barber traps and quadrats in eight habitats of the island as well as in various sites located upstream or downstream. We found high levels of species richness within these pioneer and ephemeral habitats. Several species of ground beetles appeared to be good indicators of sampled habitats where extreme environmental conditions generally prevail. Community analyses indicated that ground beetle very quickly colonized newly created habitats and allowed us to identify species being very good pioneers of early successional habitats.

Abstract

We provide a comprehensive overview of those Lepidopteran invasions to Europe that result from increasing globalisation and also review expansion of species within Europe. A total of 97 non-native Lepidoptera species (about 1% of the known fauna), in 20 families and 11 superfamilies have established so far in Europe, of which 30 alone are Pyraloidea. In addition, 88 European species in 25 families have expanded their range within Europe and around 23% of these are of Mediterranean or Balkan origin, invading the north and west. Although a number of these alien species have been in Europe for hundreds of years, 74% have established during the 20th century and arrivals are accelerating, with an average of 1.9 alien Lepidoptera newly established per year between 2000–2007. For 78 aliens with a known area of origin, Asia has contributed 28.9%, Africa (including Macaronesian islands, Canaries, Madeira and Azores) 21.6%, North America 16.5%, Australasia 7.2% and the neotropics just 5.2%. Th e route for almost all aliens to Europe is via importation of plants or plant products. Most alien Lepidoptera established in Europe are also confi ned to man-made habitats, with 52.5% occuring in parks and gardens. We highlight four species in particular, Diaphania perspectalis, Cacyreus marshalli, Cameraria ohridella and Paysandisia archon, as the most important current economic threats.

Abstract

Classical biological control is often advocated as a tool for managing invasive species. However, accurate evaluations of parasitoid species complexes and assessment of host specificity are impeded by the lack of morphological variation. Here, we study the possibility of host races/species within the eulophid wasp Pediobius saulius, a pupal generalist parasitoid that parasitize the highly invasive horse-chestnut leaf-mining moth Cameraria ohridella. We analysed the population genetic structure, host associations and phylogeographic patterns of P. saulius in Europe using the COI mitochondrial gene. This marker strongly supports a division into at least five highly differentiated parasitoid complexes, within two of which clades with differing degrees of host specialization were found: a Balkan clade that mainly (but not only) attacks C. ohridella and a more generalist European group that attacks many hosts, including C. ohridella. The divergence in COI (up to 7.6%) suggests the existence of cryptic species, although this is neither confirmed by nuclear divergence nor morphology. We do not find evidence of host tracking. The higher parasitism rates observed in the Balkans and the scarcity of the Balkan–Cameraria haplotypes out of the Balkans open the possibility of using these Balkan haplotypes as biological control agents of C. ohridella elsewhere in Europe.

The EC-supported Network of Excellence Evoltree (http://www.evoltree.eu) formed a group of scientists involved in and actively contributing to Jointly Executed Research Activities on community genetics in forest ecosystems. In addition to the main authors, the group includes S. Augu-stin, M. Brandle, C. Burban, J. Burczyk, S. Cavers, I. Chybicki, C. Conord, E. Cremer, J. DeWoody, K. Donges, B. Fady,L. Karlinski, C. Kerdelhue, B. Kieliszewska-Rokicka, G. Kost, M. Kulczyk-Skrzeszewska, F. Lakatos, F. Lefevre, S.Liepelt, S. Oddou-Muratorio, K.-H. Rexer, M. Rudawska, M.Schadler, G. Taylor, K. Tuba, M. Viger, F. Villani, M. Villar.; Understanding the interactions of co-occurring species within and across trophic levels provides key information needed for understanding the ecological and evolutionary processes that underlie biological diversity. As genetics has only recently been integrated into the study of community-level interactions, the time is right for a critical evaluation of potential new, gene-based approaches to studying communities. Next-generation molecular techniques, used in parallel with field-based observations and manipulative experiments across spatio-temporal gradients, are key to expanding our understanding of community-level processes. Here, we introduce a variety of ‘-omics’ tools, with recent studies of plant–insect herbivores and of ectomycorrhizal systems providing detailed examples of how next-generation approaches can revolutionize our understanding of interspecific interactions. We suggest ways that novel technologies may convert community genetics from a field that relies on correlative inference to one that reveals causal mechanisms of genetic co-variation and adaptations within communities.

Abstract

International audience; Recent research suggests that genetic diversity in tree population may shape associated species assemblages and then drive ecosystem processes. Trees can support large numbers of insect species and some functional traits of trees have been shown to have major influence on insect communities and resultant damage. Studying the response of insect herbivore populations to the genetic diversity of tree populations is therefore a relevant approach to test community genetics hypotheses. The objective of our study was to evaluate how insect herbivory is affected by genotypes of Populus nigra, a dominant native poplar species in riparian forests of Europe. In a field experiment, we planted eight native P. nigra clones in plots of increasing genetic diversity with combinations of one to six clones. Insect herbivory was measured using visual estimation of leaf damage by six functional guilds of insects: chewers, skeletonisers, leaf miners, gall makers, leaf rollers, sap suckers and sap feeders. Response of insect herbivory to increasing genotypic diversity was analysed by considering the net diversity effect which was further divided in a complementary and a selection effects. Overall we observed slightly higher insect herbivory in poplar clone mixtures than in clone monocultures. This pattern was due to two opposite mechanisms. There was a positive complementary effect, with higher associational susceptibility in more genetically diverse mixtures. On the other hand, the selection effect also increased with the genetic diversity as the more diverse clone mixtures were more likely to comprise insect resistant clones.

National audience; Des recherches récentes ont montré que la diversité génétique des arbres peut conditionner l’assemblage des communautés associées et ainsi façonner l’évolution des écosystèmes. Les arbres peuvent héberger une importante communauté d’insectes et certains de leurs traits fonctionnels (débourrement végétatif, surface foliaire...) peuvent avoir une influence majeure sur la consommation des insectes. L’objectif de cette étude est d’évaluer comment l’herbivorie interagit avec la diversité génétique intraspécifique de huit clones de peuplier noir du bassin de la Loire. Nous avons installé en avril 2009 un dispositif expérimental en milieu naturel au sein de la ripisylve à peuplier noir de l’ISS Loire (intensive study site, http://www.evoltree.eu/), comprenant 120 parcelles unitaires de 6 plants, en combinaison variable de 1 à 6 génotypes. Des dispositifs similaires ont été installés en Hongrie, Italie et Pologne dans le cadre du réseau d’excellence européen Evoltree. L’herbivorie a été mesurée par estimation visuelle des dommages foliaires de six guildes fonctionnelles d’insectes : brouteurs, squeletteurs, mineuses, enrouleurs, galligènes, piqueurs-suceurs. La réponse des insectes a été analysée en tenant compte du niveau de diversité et de la composition des parcelles. Les premiers résultats du dispositif de Loire montrent un effet positif de la diversité, principalement expliqué par une plus forte sensibilité des parcelles les plus diversifiées génétiquement.

Abstract

We provide a comprehensive overview of those Lepidopteran invasions to Europe that result from increasing globalisation and also review expansion of species within Europe. A total of 97 non-native Lepidoptera species (about 1% of the known fauna), in 20 families and 11 superfamilies have established so far in Europe, of which 30 alone are Pyraloidea. In addition, 88 European species in 25 families have expanded their range within Europe and around 23% of these are of Mediterranean or Balkan origin, invading the north and west. Although a number of these alien species have been in Europe for hundreds of years, 74% have established during the 20th century and arrivals are accelerating, with an average of 1.9 alien Lepidoptera newly established per year between 2000 2007. For 78 aliens with a known area of origin, Asia has contributed 28.9%, Africa (including Macaronesian islands, Canaries, Madeira and Azores) 21.6%, North America 16.5%, Australasia 7.2% and the neotropics just 5.2%. The route for almost all aliens to Europe is via importation of plants or plant products. Most alien Lepidoptera established in Europe are also confined to man-made habitats, with 52.5% occuring in parks and gardens. We highlight four species in particular, Diaphania perspectalis, Cacyreus marshalli, Cameraria ohridella and Paysandisia archon, as the most important current economic threats.

La populiculture est souvent mise en cause dans la gestion des zones humides. Si certains cortèges faunistiques et floristiques sont en effet directement menacés à cause des interventions humaines dans ces zones sensibles, ceux associés à l’agrosystème peupleraie sont presque inconnus et notamment en ce qui concerne l’entomofaune. Une étude a été réalisée de 2001 à 2003 pour évaluer la diversité des Coléoptères carabiques des peupleraies en Picardie. Cet article présente la liste et l’écologie des espèces répertoriées et considère certains facteurs abiotiques impliqués dans la biodiversité carabologique des peupleraies picardes., Biodiversity of ground beetles in the Picardy poplar plantations (Coleoptera Carabidae). The populiculture is often blamed in the management of the wetlands. Indeed some wetland assemblages are directly threatened by anthropic disturbance.However, there is only a few data on poplar assemblages and in particular on the insect fauna. A study was carried out from 2001 to 2003 to evaluate the ground beetle diversity of poplar stands in Picardy. First this article provides the list and the ecology of the inventoried species, and then considers some abiotic factors involved in the carabid biodiversity of poplar plantations in Picardy.

Abstract

International audience; Chrysomela tremulae is one of the most threatening leaf-feeding beetles in young poplar plantations and nurseries in France. Adults and larvae feed on young poplar leaves and destroy the new growth. They cause reductions in biomass or the death of young nursery plants and decrease the biomass production of short rotation coppices. Previous studies have revealed significant differences in responses among poplar species and hybrids, and knowledge on the host plant resistance and its genetic variation is a first step to achieve selection for durable resistance. To determine the genetic basis of resistance to C. tremulae, an interspecific Fl family P. deltoides x P trichocarpa of 330 individuals was used. The P. deltoides parent was resistant and the male parent P. trichocarpa suceptible. The evaluation of resistance was carried both in laboratory and field conditions on respectively 330 and 184 genotypes. The preferences of C. tremulae were determined (1) in the laboratory by evaluation of adults feeding through multiple choice tests on leaf disk (2) in the field, by visual notations of damage in a randomised plantation. It allowed to classify the progenies according to their level of sensivity. The distributions of clonal means observed fit with a polygenic control for the traits. Resistance to C. tremulae showed a higher broad sense heritability in the laboratory tests than in the field evaluation. The genetic maps of the 2 parents : the female parent P. deltoides and the male parent P. trichocarpa realized, using RAPD, RFLP, AFLP and SSR markers were used to understand the genomic structure of resistance. Based on 'interval mapping' we have identified for laboratory test 3 QTL, explaining between 6.7% and 14.5% of clonal differences on P. deltoides and P. trichocarpa linkage groups.

Abstract

La mineuse du marronnier Cameraria ohridella Deschka and Dimic est un lépidoptère dont l'origine est inconnue. Cette espèce, découverte en macédoine il y a plus de 20 ans, a ensuite colonisé progressivement toute l'Europe. Elle provoque d'importants dégâts sur le marronnier d'inde Aesculus hippocastanum L., mais d'autres espèces de marronniers et d'érables peuvent être attaquées. Les dégâts n'entraînent pas de risques immédiats de déclin des arbres mais posent des problèmes esthétiques et économiques pour les arbres urbains. L'accroissement rapide des populations de la mineuse, la grande disponibilité de la plante hôte dans les villes, l'absence de prédateurs, et de parasites spécifiques ne facilitent pas la lutte contre cet insecte. Les possibilités et les limites de l'application des différentes stratégies de lutte sont discutées., The horse-chestnut leaf miner, Cameraria ohridella Deschka and Dimic is a lepidopteran of unknown origin. This species was first obseгved in Macedonia more than 20 years ago and since then, it had spread over almost al Europe. It causes outbreaks on the European horse-chestnut Aesculus hippocastanum L., but other horse chestnut and maple species may be attacked. The damages do not lead to immediate plant health problem but pose aesthetical and economical problem on urban trees. The rapid growth of moth populations, the great host plant availability in urban environnement, and the lack of predators and specific parasitoides make the control of this insect difficult. The possibilities and limits of the use of the different control methods аге discussed.

Abstract

International audience; The parasitism of the horse chestnut leafminer remains at a low level in Europe since many years. As a consequence, horse chestnuts in regions with more than 20 years of C. ohridella infestation still suffer from heavy leafminer attack.However, results of our investigations show changes in the parasitoid complex over the years, reflecting three different strategies exemplified by three parasitoidspecies. (1) The abundance of the most common parasitoid, Minotetrastichus frontalis, seems to remain at the same low level, indicating that the parasitoid does not actively search for special leafminer hosts but rather encounter them by chance. The relative impact of these species decreases as other parasitoids gain importance. (2) Other species, like Pediobius saulius, seem to undergo a slow adaptation process. Their relative importance in the parasitoid complex increases at many locations infested for a long time. In the long run, parasitism of these species may reach levels exhibiting a controlling effect on the leafminer's populations. (3) A third group of species seems to follow the spread of its new host and invade new regions. Starting in the year 2000, the originally eastern European species Cirrospilus talitzkii was recorded from C. ohridella in countries where it has never been found before on any other leafminer. Meanwhile, the species can be found as a regular element of the parasitoid complex of the horse chestnut leafminer in many south and central European countries. To the present, these changes in the parasitoid complex have no significant impact on overall parasitism of C. ohridella. However, there are measurable effects, like an increasing rate of pupal parasitism due to the action of P. saulius. In the long run, changes in the parasitoid spectrum of the horse chestnut leafminer may increase the impact of parasitism and contribute substantially to the control of the invasive species in future.

50. Forecasting Cameraria ohridella invasion dynamics in recently invaded countries: from validation to prediction

Abstract

International audience; 1. Biological invasions have an anthropogenic origin, and although many species are able to spread on their own within the newly invaded area, long-distance dispersal events shown to accelerate rates of spread are frequently associated with human activities. In a previous study, the performances of several invasion models of the spread of the horse chestnut leafminer Cameraria ohridella in Germany were compared, demonstrating that the best model in qualitative and quantitative terms was a stratified dispersal model taking into account the effect of human population density on the probability of long-distance dispersal events. 2. Similar data were collected in France over 4 years (2000-2004, 5274 observation points). These data were used to assess the performance of the best-fit models from Germany using the original parameters and to model the spread of the leafminer in France. 3. The stratified dispersal model accounting for variations in human population density developed in Germany, predicted the invasion of France with a similar level of predictive power as in the area where it was developed. This suggests that an equivalent level of predictability can be expected in a newly invaded country with similar environmental conditions. 4. We applied the model to forecast the future invasion dynamics in the UK from 2005 to 2008, based on the first observations of Cameraria in the country in 2002-2004. Predictions are discussed in the light of different prevailing environmental conditions. 5. Synthesis and application. The model and predictions developed in this study provide one of the few examples of an a priori model of invasion in a newly invaded country, and provide a simple modelling framework that can be used to explore the spread of other invading organisms. In the case of Cameraria, little can be done to prevent or slow its spread but our model, by predicting changes in distribution and rates of spread, provides fore-warning of where and when damaging pest populations are likely to appear.
