Polymers exhibiting the stress-free two-way shape-memory effect (SME) represent an appealing solution to achieve self-standing reversible actuation that is a fundamental feature required by numerous applications. The present paper proposes a one-dimensional continuum phenomenological framework to model single-component semi-crystalline polymer networks exhibiting both the one-way SME and the two-way SME under stress and stress-free conditions. A comprehensive experimental campaign is first performed on semi-crystalline networks based on poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL) to characterize the mechanical and thermal properties as well as the one-way and two-way shape memory behavior of the material under different thermo-mechanical conditions. The results guide the formulation of the model, elucidating the selection of the control and phase variables and motivating the choice of their evolution laws. Model capabilities are then demonstrated against experimental data. The present paper is concerned with numerical investigation of the performance of a pilot-operated control valve based on shape memory alloy actuation control. The valve under investigation can be integrated into miniaturized hydraulic systems and is developed to perform precise dispensing, mixing, or dosing tasks while being able to withstand relatively high pressure differences. The study evaluates the valve's response under the current ON/OFF and the desired proportional control regimes using numerical methods for fluid-structure interaction. The computational model replicates the operation of the valve, which requires an understanding of the complex interactions between the fluid flow with the pressurized valve and the contact with the valve seat during the opening and closing processes. In addition, the model leverages advanced numerical techniques to overcome several complexities arising mainly from the geometrical, material, and contact nonlinearities, and to mitigate the shortcomings of the partitioned fluid-structure interaction approach. Several simulations are conducted to examine the valve's structural and flow behavior under varying pressure conditions. Results indicate that the valve is adequate for ON/OFF actuation control but is susceptible to flow-induced vibrations during the proportional control regime that occurs due to the sharp pressure drop in the valve-seat gap and the ensuing Venturi effect, which counteract the opening of the main valve. We advance a combined filtered/phase-field approach to topology optimization in the setting of linearized elasticity. Existence of minimizers is proved and rigorous parameter asymptotics are discussed by means of variational convergence techniques. Moreover, we investigate an abstract space discretization in the spirit of conformal finite elements. Eventually, stationarity is equivalently reformulated in terms of a Lagrangian.

We present an efficient approach to quantify the uncertainties associated with the numerical simulations of the laser-based powder bed fusion of metals processes. Our study focuses on a thermomechanical model of an Inconel 625 cantilever beam, based on the AMBench2018-01 benchmark proposed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The proposed approach consists of a forward uncertainty quantification analysis of the residual strains of the cantilever beam given the uncertainty in some of the parameters of the numerical simulation, namely the powder convection coefficient and the activation temperature. The uncertainty on such parameters is modelled by a data-informed probability density function obtained by a Bayesian inversion procedure, based on the displacement experimental data provided by NIST. To overcome the computational challenges of both the Bayesian inversion and the forward uncertainty quantification analysis we employ a multi-fidelity surrogate modelling technique, specifically the multi-index stochastic collocation method. The proposed approach allows us to achieve a 33\% reduction in the uncertainties on the prediction of residual strains compared with what we would get basing the forward UQ analysis on a-priori ranges for the uncertain parameters, and in particular the mode of the probability density function of such quantities (i.e., its ``most likely value'', roughly speaking) results to be in good agreement with the experimental data provided by NIST, even though only displacement data were used for the Bayesian inversion procedure., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures

In the present paper, we consider one-hidden layer ANNs with a feedforward architecture, also referred to as shallow or two-layer networks, so that the structure is determined by the number and types of neurons. The determination of the parameters that define the function, called training, is done via the resolution of the approximation problem, so by imposing the interpolation through a set of specific nodes. We present the case where the parameters are trained using a procedure that is referred to as Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) that leads to a linear interpolation problem. In such hypotheses, the existence of an ANN interpolating function is guaranteed. The focus is then on the accuracy of the interpolation outside of the given sampling interpolation nodes when they are the equispaced, the Chebychev, and the randomly selected ones. The study is motivated by the well-known bell-shaped Runge example, which makes it clear that the construction of a global interpolating polynomial is accurate only if trained on suitably chosen nodes, ad example the Chebychev ones. In order to evaluate the behavior when growing the number of interpolation nodes, we raise the number of neurons in our network and compare it with the interpolating polynomial. We test using Runge's function and other well-known examples with different regularities. As expected, the accuracy of the approximation with a global polynomial increases only if the Chebychev nodes are considered. Instead, the error for the ANN interpolating function always decays and in most cases we observe that the convergence follows what is observed in the polynomial case on Chebychev nodes, despite the set of nodes used for training.

We study the large time behavior of a system of interacting agents modeling the relaxation of a large swarm of robots, whose task is to uniformly cover a portion of the domain by communicating with each other in terms of their distance. To this end, we generalize a related result for a Fokker-Planck-type model with a nonlocal discontinuous drift and constant diffusion, recently introduced by three of the authors, of which the steady distribution is explicitly computable. For this new nonlocal Fokker-Planck equation, existence, uniqueness and positivity of a global solution are proven, together with precise equilibration rates of the solution towards its quasi-stationary distribution. Numerical experiments are designed to verify the theoretical findings and explore possible extensions to more complex scenarios.

We obtain equilibration rates for a one-dimensional nonlocal Fokker-Planck equation with time-dependent diffusion coefficient and drift, modeling the relaxation of a large swarm of robots, feeling each other in terms of their distance, towards the steady profile characterized by uniform spreading over a finite interval of the line. The result follows by combining entropy methods for quantifying the decay of the solution towards its quasi-stationary distribution, with the properties of the quasi-stationary profile.

The present paper aims at applying uncertainty quantification methodologies to process simulations of powder bed fusion of metal. In particular, for a part-scale thermomechanical model of an Inconel 625 super-alloy beam, we study the uncertainties of three process parameters, namely the activation temperature, the powder convection coefficient and the gas convection coefficient. First, we perform a variance-based global sensitivity analysis to study how each uncertain parameter contributes to the variability of the beam displacements. The results allow us to conclude that the gas convection coefficient has little impact and can therefore be fixed to a constant value for subsequent studies. Then, we conduct an inverse uncertainty quantification analysis, based on a Bayesian approach on synthetic displacements data, to quantify the uncertainties of the two remaining parameters, namely the activation temperature and the powder convection coefficient. Finally, we use the results of the inverse uncertainty quantification analysis to perform a data-informed forward uncertainty quantification analysis of the residual strains. Crucially, we make use of surrogate models based on sparse grids to keep to a minimum the computational burden of every step of the uncertainty quantification analysis. The proposed uncertainty quantification workflow allows us to substantially ease the typical trial-and-error approach used to calibrate power bed fusion part-scale models, and to greatly reduce uncertainties on the numerical prediction of the residual strains. In particular, we demonstrate the possibility of using displacement measurements to obtain a data-informed probability density function of the residual strains, a quantity much more complex to measure than displacements.

In this paper we study a novel Fokker-Planck-type model that is designed to mimic manufacturing processes through the dynamics characterizing a large set of agents. In particular, we describe a many-agent system interacting with a target domain in such a way that each agent/particle is attracted by the center of mass of the target domain with the aim to uniformly cover this zone. To this end, we first introduce a mean-field model with discontinuous flux whose large time behavior is such that the steady state is globally continuous and uniform over a connected portion of the domain. We prove that a diffusion coefficient that guarantees that a given portion of mass enters in the target domain exists and that it is unique. Furthermore, convergence to equilibrium in 1D is provided through a reformulation of the initial problem involving a nonconstant diffusion function. The extension to 2D is explored numerically by means of recently introduced structure preserving methods for Fokker-Planck equations.

This paper is concerned with the well-posedness of a diffusion-reaction system for a Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered (SEIR) mathematical model. This model is written in terms of four nonlinear partial differential equations with nonlinear diffusions, depending on the total amount of the SEIR populations. The model aims at describing the spatio-temporal spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and is a variation of the one recently introduced, discussed and tested in [A. Viguerie et al, Diffusion-reaction compartmental models formulated in a continuum mechanics framework: application to COVID-19, mathematical analysis, and numerical study, Comput. Mech. 66 (2020) 1131-1152]. Here, we deal with the mathematical analysis of the resulting Cauchy-Neumann problem: the existence of solutions is proved in a rather general setting and a suitable time discretization procedure is employed. It is worth mentioning that the uniform boundedness of the discrete solution is shown by carefully exploiting the structure of the system. Uniform estimates and passage to the limit with respect to the time step allow to complete the existence proof. We propose an adaptive mesh refinement strategy for immersed isogeometric analysis, with application to steady heat conduction and viscous flow problems. The proposed strategy is based on residual-based error estimation, which has been tailored to the immersed setting by the incorporation of appropriately scaled stabilization and boundary terms. Element-wise error indicators are elaborated for the Laplace and Stokes problems, and a THB-spline-based local mesh refinement strategy is proposed. The error estimation .and adaptivity procedure is applied to a series of benchmark problems, demonstrating the suitability of the technique for a range of smooth and non-smooth problems. The adaptivity strategy is also integrated in a scan-based analysis workflow, capable of generating reliable, error-controlled, results from scan data, without the need for extensive user interactions or interventions., Comment: Submitted to Journal of Mechanics

Numerical simulations of a complete laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing (AM) process are extremely challenging or even impossible to achieve without a radical model reduction of the complex physical phenomena occurring during the process. However, even when we adopt reduced model with simplified physics, the complex geometries of parts usually produced by LPBF AM processes make this kind of analysis computationally expensive. In fact, small geometrical features - which might be generated when the part is design following the principal of the so-called design for AM, for instance, by means of topology optimization procedures - often require complex conformal meshes. Immersed boundary methods seem to offer a valid alternative to deal with this kind of complexity. The two-level method lies within this family of numerical methods and presents a very flexible tool to deal with multi-scale problems. In this contribution, we apply the recently introduced two-level method to part-scale thermal analysis of LPBF manufactured components, first validating the proposed part-scale model with respect to experimental measurements from the literature and then applying the presented numerical framework to simulate a complete LPBF process of a topologically optimized structure, showing the capability of the method to easily deal with complex geometrical features.

Problems with localized nonhomogeneous material properties present well-known challenges for numerical simulations. In particular, such problems may feature large differences in length scales, causing difficulties with meshing and preconditioning. These difficulties are increased if the region of localized dynamics changes in time. Overlapping domain decomposition methods, which split the problem at the continuous level, show promise due to their ease of implementation and computational efficiency. Accordingly, the present work aims to further develop the mathematical theory of such methods at both the continuous and discrete levels. For the continuous formulation of the problem, we provide a full convergence analysis. For the discrete problem, we show how the described method may be interpreted as a Gauss-Seidel scheme or as a Neumann series approximation, establishing a convergence criterion in terms of the spectral radius of the system. We then provide a spectral scaling argument and provide numerical evidence for its justification.

Numerical simulation of the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) procedure for additive manufacturing (AM) is difficult due to the presence of multiple scales in both time and space, ranging from the part scale (order of millimeters/seconds) to the powder scale (order of microns/milliseconds). This difficulty is compounded by the fact that the regions of small-scale behavior are not fixed, but change in time as the geometry is produced. While much work in recent years has been focused on resolving the problem of multiple scales in space, there has been less work done on multiscale approaches for the temporal discretization of LPBF problems. In the present contribution, we extend on a previously introduced two-level method in space by combining it with a multiscale time integration method. The unique transfer of information through the transmission conditions allows for interaction between the space and time scales while reducing computational costs. At the same time, all of the advantages of the two-level method in space (namely its geometrical flexibility and the ease in which one may deploy structured, uniform meshes) remain intact. Adopting the proposed multiscale time integration scheme, we observe a computational speed-up by a factor $\times 2.44$ compared to the same two-level approach with uniform time integration, when simulating a laser source traveling on a bare plate of nickel-based superalloy material following an alternating scan path of fifty laser tracks.

We propose a variational principle combining a phase-field functional for structural topology optimization with a mixed (three-field) Hu-Washizu functional, then including directly in the formulation equilibrium, constitutive, and compatibility equations. The resulting mixed variational functional is then specialized to derive a classical topology optimization formulation (where the amount of material to be distributed is an \emph{a priori} assigned quantity acting as a global constraint for the problem) as well as a novel topology optimization formulation (where the amount of material to be distributed is minimized, hence with no pre imposed constraint for the problem). Both formulations are numerically solved by implementing a mixed finite element scheme, with the second approach avoiding the introduction of a global constraint, hence respecting the convenient local nature of the finite element discretization. Furthermore, within the proposed approach it is possible to obtain guidelines for settings proper values of phase-field-related simulation parameters and, thanks to the combined phase-field and Hu-Washizu rationale, a monolithic algorithm solution scheme can be easily adopted. An insightful and extensive numerical investigation results in a detailed convergence study and a discussion on the obtained final designs. Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology has undergone significant development in the past years providing unique flexibility for the fabrication of complex metamaterials such as octet-truss lattices. However, the microstructure of the final parts can exhibit significant variations due to the high complexity of the manufacturing process. Consequently, the mechanical behavior of these lattices is strongly dependent on the process-induced defects, raising the importance on the incorporation of as-manufactured geometries into the computational structural analysis. This, in turn, challenges the traditional mesh-conforming methods making the computational costs prohibitively large. In the present work, an immersed image-to-analysis framework is applied to efficiently evaluate the bending behavior of AM lattices. To this end, we employ the Finite Cell Method (FCM) to perform a three-dimensional numerical analysis of the three-point bending test of a lattice structure and compare the as-designed to as-manufactured effective properties. Furthermore, we undertake a comprehensive study on the applicability of dimensionally reduced beam models to the prediction of the bending behavior of lattice beams and validate classical and strain gradient beam theories applied in combination with the FCM. The numerical findings suggest that the SLM octet-truss lattices exhibit size effects, thus, requiring a flexible framework to incorporate high-order continuum theories.

The production of lightweight metal lattice structures has received much attention due to the recent developments in additive manufacturing (AM). The design flexibility comes, however, with the complexity of the underlying physics. In fact, metal additive manufacturing introduces process-induced geometrical defects that mainly result in deviations of the effective geometry from the nominal one. This change in the final printed shape is the primary cause of the gap between the as-designed and as-manufactured mechanical behavior of AM products. Thus, the possibility to incorporate the precise manufactured geometries into the computational analysis is crucial for the quality and performance assessment of the final parts. Computed tomography (CT) is an accurate method for the acquisition of the manufactured shape. However, it is often not feasible to integrate the CT-based geometrical information into the traditional computational analysis due to the complexity of the meshing procedure for such high-resolution geometrical models and the prohibitive numerical costs. In this work, an embedded numerical framework is applied to efficiently simulate and compare the mechanical behavior of as-designed to as-manufactured octet-truss lattice structures. The parts are produced using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). Employing an immersed boundary method, namely the Finite Cell Method (FCM), we perform direct numerical simulations (DNS) and first-order numerical homogenization analysis of a tensile test for a 3D printed octet-truss structure. Numerical results based on CT scan (as-manufactured geometry) show an excellent agreement with experimental measurements, whereas both DNS and first-order numerical homogenization performed directly on the 3D virtual model (as-designed geometry) of the structure show a significant deviation from experimental data.

We present an early version of a Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered-Deceased (SEIRD) mathematical model based on partial differential equations coupled with a heterogeneous diffusion model. The model describes the spatio-temporal spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, and aims to capture dynamics also based on human habits and geographical features. To test the model, we compare the outputs generated by a finite-element solver with measured data over the Italian region of Lombardy, which has been heavily impacted by this crisis between February and April 2020. Our results show a strong qualitative agreement between the simulated forecast of the spatio-temporal COVID-19 spread in Lombardy and epidemiological data collected at the municipality level. Additional simulations exploring alternative scenarios for the relaxation of lockdown restrictions suggest that reopening strategies should account for local population densities and the specific dynamics of the contagion. Thus, we argue that data-driven simulations of our model could ultimately inform health authorities to design effective pandemic-arresting measures and anticipate the geographical allocation of crucial medical resources., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Automatic differentiation (AD) is an ensemble of techniques that allow to evaluate accurate numerical derivatives of a mathematical function expressed in a computer programming language. In this paper we use AD for stating and solving solid mechanics problems. Given a finite element discretization of the domain, we evaluate the free energy of the solid as the integral of its strain energy density, and we make use of AD for directly obtaining the residual force vector and the tangent stiffness matrix of the problem, as the gradient and the Hessian of the free energy respectively. The result is a remarkable simplification in the statement and the solution of complex problems involving non trivial constraints systems and both geometrical and material non linearities. The Finite Cell Method (FCM) together with Isogeometric analysis (IGA) has been applied successfully in various problems in solid mechanics, in image-based analysis, fluid-structure interaction and in many other applications. A challenging aspect of the isogeometric finite cell method is the integration of cut cells. In particular in three-dimensional simulations the computational effort associated with integration can be the critical component of a simulation. A myriad of integration strategies has been proposed over the past years to ameliorate the difficulties associated with integration, but a general optimal integration framework that suits a broad class of engineering problems is not yet available. In this contribution we provide a thorough investigation of the accuracy and computational effort of the octree integration scheme. We quantify the contribution of the integration error using the theoretical basis provided by Strang's first lemma. Based on this study we propose an error-estimate-based adaptive integration procedure for immersed isogeometric analysis. Additionally, we present a detailed numerical investigation of the proposed optimal integration algorithm and its application to immersed isogeometric analysis using two- and three-dimensional linear elasticity problems., Comment: To CAMWA

Problems with localized nonhomogeneous material properties arise frequently in many applications and are a well-known source of difficulty in numerical simulations. In certain applications (including additive manufacturing), the physics of the problem may be considerably more complicated in relatively small portions of the domain, requiring a significantly finer local mesh compared to elsewhere in the domain. This can make the use of a uniform mesh numerically unfeasible. While nonuniform meshes can be employed, they may be challenging to generate (particularly for regions with complex boundaries) and more difficult to precondition. The problem becomes even more prohibitive when the region requiring a finer-level mesh changes in time, requiring the introduction of refinement and derefinement techniques. To address the aforementioned challenges, we employ a technique related to the Fat boundary method as a possible alternative. We analyze the proposed methodology, from a mathematical point of view and validate our findings on two-dimensional numerical tests.

In this paper a phase-field approach for structural topology optimization for a 3D-printing process which includes stress constraint and potentially multiple materials or multiscales is analyzed. First order necessary optimality conditions are rigorously derived and a numerical algorithm which implements the method is presented. A sensitivity study with respect to some parameters is conducted for a two-dimensional cantilever beam problem. Finally, a possible workflow to obtain a 3D-printed object from the numerical solutions is described and the final structure is printed using a fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printer.

Microstructured honeycomb materials may exhibit exotic, extreme and tailorable mechanical properties, suited for innovative technological applications in a variety of modern engineering fields. The paper is focused on analysing the directional auxeticity of tetrachiral materials, through analytical, numerical and experimental methods. Theoretical predictions about the global elastic properties have been successfully validated by performing tensile laboratory tests on tetrachiral samples, realized with high precision 3D printing technologies. Inspired by the kinematic behaviour of the tetrachiral material, a newly-design bi-layered topology, referred to as bi-tetrachiral material, has been theoretically conceived and mechanically modelled. The novel topology virtuously exploits the mutual collaboration between two tetrachiral layers with opposite chiralities. The bi-tetrachiral material has been verified to outperform the tetrachiral material in terms of global Young modulus and, as major achievement, to exhibit a remarkable auxetic behaviour. Specifically, experimental results, confirmed by parametric analytical and computational analyses, have highlighted the effective possibility to attain strongly negative Poisson ratios, identified as a peculiar global elastic property of the novel bi-layered topology.

In this contribution, we validate a physical model based on a transient temperature equation (including latent heat) w.r.t. the experimental set AMB2018-02 provided within the additive manufacturing benchmark series, established at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA. We aim at predicting the following quantities of interest: width, depth, and length of the melt pool by numerical simulation and report also on the obtainable numerical results of the cooling rate. We first assume the laser to posses a double ellipsoidal shape and demonstrate that a well calibrated, purely thermal model based on isotropic thermal conductivity is able to predict all the quantities of interest, up to a deviation of maximum 7.3\% from the experimentally measured values. However, it is interesting to observe that if we directly introduce, whenever available, the measured laser profile in the model (instead of the double ellipsoidal shape) the investigated model returns a deviation of 19.3\% from the experimental values. This motivates a model update by introducing anisotropic conductivity, which is intended to be a simplistic model for heat material convection inside the melt pool. Such an anisotropic model enables the prediction of all quantities of interest mentioned above with a maximum deviation from the experimental values of 6.5\%. We note that, although more predictive, the anisotropic model induces only a marginal increase in computational complexity.

This paper analyzes the non-trivial influence of the material anisotropy on the structural behavior of an anisotropic multilayer planar beam. Indeed, analytical results available in literature are limited to homogeneous beams and several aspects has not been addressed yet, impeding an in-depth understanding of the mechanical response of anisotropic structural elements. This paper proposes an effective recovery of stress distribution and an energetically consistent evaluation of constitutive relations to be used within a planar Timoshenko beam model. The resulting structural-analysis tool highlights the following peculiarities of anisotropic beams: (i) the axial stress explicitly depends on transversal internal force, which can weigh up to 30% on the maximal magnitude of axial stress, and (ii) the anisotropy influences the beam displacements more than standard shear deformation and even for extremely slender beams. A rigorous comparison with analytical and accurate 2D Finite Element solutions confirms the accuracy of the proposed approach that leads to errors exceptionally greater than 5%.

In the present work we introduce a novel graded-material design based on phase-field and topology optimization. The main novelty of this work comes from the introduction of an additional phase-field variable in the classical single-material phase-field topology optimization algorithm. This new variable is used to grade the material properties in a continuous fashion. Two different numerical examples are discussed, in both of them we perform sensitivity studies to asses the effects of different model parameters onto the resulting structure. From the presented results we can observe that the proposed algorithm adds additional freedom in the design, exploiting the higher flexibility coming from additive manufacturing technology.

A Skeleton-stabilized ImmersoGeometric Analysis technique is proposed for incompressible viscous flow problems with moderate Reynolds number. The proposed formulation fits within the framework of the finite cell method, where essential boundary conditions are imposed weakly using a Nitsche-type method. The key idea of the proposed formulation is to stabilize the jumps of high-order derivatives of variables over the skeleton of the background mesh. The formulation allows the use of identical finite-dimensional spaces for the approximation of the pressure and velocity fields in immersed domains. The stability issues observed for inf-sup stable discretizations of immersed incompressible flow problems are avoided with this formulation. For B-spline basis functions of degree $k$ with highest regularity, only the derivative of order $k$ has to be controlled, which requires specification of only a single stabilization parameter for the pressure field. The Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations are studied numerically in two and three dimensions using various immersed test cases. Oscillation-free solutions and high-order optimal convergence rates can be obtained. The formulation is shown to be stable even in limit cases where almost every elements of the physical domain is cut, and hence it does not require the existence of interior cells. In terms of the sparsity pattern, the algebraic system has a considerably smaller stencil than counterpart approaches based on Lagrange basis functions. This important property makes the proposed skeleton-stabilized technique computationally practical. To demonstrate the stability and robustness of the method, we perform a simulation of fluid flow through a porous medium, of which the geometry is directly extracted from 3D $\mu{CT}$ scan data.

The introduction of computational models in cardiovascular sciences has been progressively bringing new and unique tools for the investigation of the physiopathology. Together with the dramatic improvement of imaging and measuring devices on one side, and of computational architectures on the other one, mathematical and numerical models have provided a new, clearly noninvasive, approach for understanding not only basic mechanisms but also patient-specific conditions, and for supporting the design and the development of new therapeutic options. The terminology in silico is, nowadays, commonly accepted for indicating this new source of knowledge added to traditional in vitro and in vivo investigations. The advantages of in silico methodologies are basically the low cost in terms of infrastructures and facilities, the reduced invasiveness and, in general, the intrinsic predictive capabilities based on the use of mathematical models. A Skeleton-stabilized IsoGeometric Analysis (SIGA) technique is proposed for incompressible viscous flow problems with moderate Reynolds number. The proposed method allows utilizing identical finite dimensional spaces (with arbitrary B-splines/NURBS order and regularity) for the approximation of the pressure and velocity components. The key idea is to stabilize the jumps of high-order derivatives of variables over the skeleton of the mesh. For B-splines/NURBS basis functions of degree $k$ with $C^{\alpha}$-regularity ($0 \leq \alpha < k$), only the derivative of order $\alpha +1$ has to be controlled. This stabilization technique thus can be viewed as a high-regularity generalization of the (Continuous) Interior-Penalty Finite Element Method. Numerical experiments are performed for the Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations in two and three dimensions. Oscillation-free solutions and optimal convergence rates are obtained. In terms of the sparsity pattern of the algebraic system, we demonstrate that the block matrix associated with the stabilization term has a considerably smaller bandwidth when using B-splines than when using Lagrange basis functions, even in the case of $C^0$-continuity. This important property makes the proposed isogeometric framework practical from a computational effort point of view.

This paper introduces a cost-effective strategy to simulate the behavior of laminated plates by means of isogeometric 3D solid elements. Exploiting the high continuity of spline functions and their properties, a proper out-of-plane stress state is recovered from a coarse displacement solution using a post-processing step based on the enforcement of equilibrium in strong form. Appealing results are obtained and the method is shown to be particularly Peffective on slender composite stacks with a large number of layers.
