As a part of WP3 (Easydb Data Modeling) of the proposal, Takin.solutions, in correlation with Programmfabrik and the HU Census team, has designed and proposed additional easydb fields based on the model structure designed within WP2. The new fields are meant to be implemented into the easydb upgraded version ‘fylr’ and to serve the purpose of helping accommodate the conceptual data structure in its entirety and complexity. The various field and data recipes have been regularly discussed and eventually submitted to Programmfabrik for implementation. The completion of this stage was essential for the full development, implementation, and testing of the ETL pipeline in the following WP4 (ETL Pipeline Development).

This document outlines the semantic data management pipeline developed and set up for the Semantic Census project as an integral part together withthe data transformation and testing phase.

This document consists of the final base data analysis report produced as an outcome of the completion of Work Package 1 (WP1) as defined in the Semantic Data Modelling Proposal of 26/10/2020. It comprised a deep analysis of the extant Census data and its history in order to support the Census project in the dual goals of implementing an upgrade and migration of their data from easydb 4 to easydb 6 (fylr) as well as to ensure that the resultant data model is able to support the project’s aim to move into the field of semantic data. Takin.solutions carried out a comprehensive communication with the Census team at Humboldt University in order to fully understand the data structure, the specificity of the data, and the desired improvements, which will facilitate the Census database’s sustainable future. A crucial part was also the continuous communication with the easydb specialists at Programmfabrik to ensure a fluent data migration process with respect to data preservation and expressivity for representation in CIDOC CRM, and in order to prevent any severe technical difficulties associated with the semantically adapted data structure. After the completion of a scheduled pre-migration meeting with the Census team and Programmfabrik, Takin.solutions will be in a position to begin the conceptual modelling of the data.

This ontology extends the CIDOC CRM 6.2 ontology data standard for cultural heritage data in order to provide classes and properties necessary to describe unique aspects of the archaeological survey process. It also makes use of classes and properties of the CIDOC CRM extensions CRMArchaeo 1.4.1 and CRMsci 1.2.3. The ontology is intended to support researchers interested in integrating archaeology survey data using the CIDOC CRM.

Presentation by George Bruseker (Takin.solutions, co-chair CIDOC CRM SIG) at theInternational Workshop ROSSIO: "Building a Digital Research Infrastructure: ROSSIO Case Study" (16-17 fev.23),Organized by Amélia Aguiar Andrade, Daniel Alves & Helena Cabeleira (ROSSIO Infrastructure), held at NOVA-FCSH (Campus da Avenida de Berna, Auditório B3 - Torre B). This event was aimed at researchers, teachers, students and other specialists, agents, professionals and communities in the fields of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts.

Archaeological data repositories usually integrate excavation data archives as single data collections with restricted capacities to accommodate excavation data interoperability at the sub-collection level. This is largely due to the complexity of excavation data archives that are compiled with different tools and methodologies, use distinct conceptual descriptions at variable granularities, can often be unfinished or open-ended and may be linked to all sorts of digital data types, each with its own complicated production workflow. In the past decades, several attempts to adapt CIDOC-CRM in order to provide more explicit descriptions of the excavation domain have resulted in several model extensions (e.g. CRMarchaeo, CRMsc, CRMba). Each focuses on corresponding aspects of the excavation research process, while their combined usage holds an already demonstrated potential to support expressive data mappings at the sub-collection level. As part of the ongoing ARIADNEplus project, several CIDOC-CRM developers and domain experts have been working as a group and engaging in conceptual mapping exercises to address the practicalities of bringing excavation data descriptions together. In this presentation we will consider several issues that may be affecting the applicability of existing solutions and link these to our overall expectations/aspirations in terms of excavation data discoverability and reusability.

In contemporary archaeological practice, archaeological data suffers from three main conditions: 1. the accumulation of vast amounts of data, 2. considerable fragmentation of data, and 3. the fast technological progress resulting in a constant need of new or upgraded data solutions to ensure sustainability and accessibility. Moreover, as data multiplies, so does data complexity. As a result, rather than a growing network of connected knowledge, researchers are faced with a growing set of disconnected data pools. The ‘Common Grounds’ semantic data project aims to bring together tested work in semantic data representation of archaeological datasets for providing a consistent conceptual model and create an integrated semantic data management platform for the Swedish Research Institutes in Rome, Athens, and Istanbul. Given a number of base datasets the data will be transformed using CIDOC-CRM ontological framework and loaded into an instance of the open source platform ‘Arches’. The datasets will thus be accessible and open for research to data owners and their collaborators from different locations in the world. Initially inter-institutional, this will allow the potential connection with external data sources in the future. The semantic nature of the transformed data will ensure its sustainability and independence from a specific data platform for decades to come and will facilitate not only the integration of other relevant datasets but also the creation of semantically-born data.

Semantic data modelling and data sharing are not yet common place in archaeological field excavation practice. ARIADNEplus, as a European Research Initiative dedicated to the sharing of digital practices and competencies in the archaeological community, has as one of its key goals to work out common semantic data model profiles for different kinds of archaeological data. In the Archaeological Excavation Modelling Working Group, a sub-group within WP 4.4.12, the focus was directed on exploring how to create, use and disseminate the practical use of semantic modelling for archaeological excavation data. An overview of the state of the art of this work is provided as an introduction to the different projects and experiments that were taken up within the remit of this group’s mandate.

In a time where the convergence of existing infrastructure is becoming ever more important - with the construction of a European Open Science Cloud as an audacious, ultimate goal - we hope that our experiences inform future work and provide inspiration on how to exploit synergies in interdisciplinary, transnational, scientific cooperation.

International audience; This editorial provides an introduction to the field of research of the Doctoral Symposium on Research on Online Databases in History (RODBH 2019) which was collocated with the 3rd Data for History workshop. The workshop series is situated in the field of digital humanities and targets the interconnection of subjects of historical research, knowledge engineering, and information science. The common interlink of this disciplines is the use of research data, data management, and all accompanying activities as well as the organization of collaborative community processes.

In order to create a Joint Resource Registry for the purpose of supporting resource discovery and data integration, a homogenous information space of metadata must be constructed. To this aim, a process for homogenization at different levels is required. The PARTHENOS infrastructure implements this process by applying structural and semantic mappings to the metadata records offered by the Research Infrastructures (RIs) in the consortium. This document forms the final report on the activities within PARTHENOS WP5 in collaboration with WP4 to adopt such a vocabulary management strategy and to identify high level standardised vocabularies for use in the data integration activities into the Joint Resource Registry carried out by WP6. This document first outlines the basic strategy adopted for vocabulary management in the PARTHENOS project and then provides an analytic presentation of the vocabularies deemed necessary for management of data atthe level of the RI. It then goes on to look at the specific research activity to find and identify the best available standards for vocabularies at the level defined by the PARTHENOS Entities, the management and tracking of information regarding datasets, software, services, projects and people, as the set of objects of interest for management at an infrastructural and cross-infrastructure level. This webinar is dedicated to the phases of the research lifecycle “Carry out Research” & “Analyse Data” in the context of a research infrastructure. Carrying out research and analysis in the context of a research infrastructure requires a change in approach to research, where the harmonization of data and the ability to access and deploy interoperable services is crucial. This webinar will give an overview of the necessary elements required to set up a sustainable research infrastructure with regards to the management of data and services. It will clarify the technical and epistemical challenges faced in attempting to establish a successful and sustainable research infrastructure. In so doing, it will outline aspects of data sharing through research infrastructures, such as processing and contributing data, using and applying ontologies, questions of interoperability, relevant tools and Virtual Research Environments (VREs). This webinar will cross-link to materials developed within PARTHENOS and by the PARTHENOS Cluster Partners and will, by way of example, refer to efforts undertaken to establish different VREs for the PARTHENOS project. International audience; With this White Paper, which gathers contributions from more than 25 experts of 3D imaging, modellng and processing, as well as professionals concerned with the interoperability and sustainability of research data, the PARTHENOS project aims at laying the foundations of a comprehensive environment centered on the researchers' practices concerning 3D digital objects.The topics addressed in the document are meant to help to ensure the development of standardized good practices relating to the production, the handling, the long-term conservation and the reuse of 3D objects. Therefore, even if the focus is put on technical questions (formats, processing, and annotation), the White Paper also identifies the need to clarify the legal status of 3D objects, in order to facilitate their reuse(s) in non-research contexts, in particular in Museums.

The present report outlines and summarises the activity of the Archaeological Excavation Modelling Working Group, a sub-group that was formed within WP 4.4.12. The group has been active since June 2020. The group was formed to investigate the potential of developing an Application Profile for excavation data, explore the current state of excavation data modelling and propose a roadmap for further activities. During the ARIADNEplus project, group participants have convened eight times, organised a virtual workshop on excavation data modelling and prepared two presentations, one at an ARIADNEplus meeting and another targeting wider audiences (EAA2022). This report documents the presentations and discussions which took place on 15 June 2022 at the "Virtual Workshop on Semantic mapping of excavation data" on Zoom. The event was organised as an open forum to illustrate aspects of the work carried out by the Archaeological Excavation Modelling Working Group, a sub-group within WP 4.4.12. The presenters, both Partners and Associate Partners of the ARIADNEplus consortium, explored semantic modelling and the use of CIDOC CRM, as well as the tools developed to assist researchers with mapping their data. Five case studies on semantic mapping of excavation data were also presented. Each presentation was followed by a Q&A, while a discussion at the end of each session allowed participants to engage in conversation and contribute their experiences and ideas with a view to making excavation data FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable).
