An extensive investigation of oxidation in uranium has been pursued. This includes the utilization of soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy, hard x-ray absorption near-edge structure, resonant (hard) x-ray emission spectroscopy, cluster calculations, and a branching ratio analysis founded on atomic theory. The samples utilized were uranium dioxide (UO2), uranium trioxide (UO3), and uranium tetrafluoride (UF4). A discussion of the role of nonspherical perturbations, i.e., crystal or ligand field effects, will be presented.

Theoretical analyses of actinyls are necessary in order to understand and correctly interpret the chemical and physical properties of these molecules. Here, wave functions of Uranyl, UO 2 2+ , are considered for the ground state and for the core excited states where an electron is promoted from the U 3d 5/2 shell into a low-lying unoccupied orbital that is U 5f antibonding with the ligand, O, orbitals. A focus is on the application of novel theoretical methods to the analysis of these wave functions so that measurements, especially with X-ray absorption, can be related to the UO 2 2+ chemical bonding. The bond covalency is examined with these theoretical methods. The study includes how the covalent character is different for the ground and excited configurations and how this character changes as the U-O distance is changed. Furthermore, analyses are mode of how many-body effects may modify excitation energies and X-ray adsorption intensities. This includes determining the extent to which a single configuration provides a satisfactory model for the UO 2 2+ wave functions. Two distinct types of many-body effects are considered. One involves the angular momentum coupling of the open shell electrons in the excited states to yield correct multiplets. The second adds excitations from shells that are bonding into the antibonding open shell space. These excitations are essential to properly describe the X-ray adsorption. While these many-body effects must be taken into account, their importance and their role can be explained and understood using orbitals and orbital occupations.

The analysis of the C(1s) and O(1s) core-level binding energies (CLBEs) of selected molecules computed by means of total energy Hartree-Fock (ΔSCF-HF) differences shows that in some cases, the calculated values for the C(1s) are larger than the experiment, which is unexpected. The origin of these unexpected errors of the Hartree-Fock ΔSCF BEs is shown to arise from static, nondynamical, electron correlation effects which are larger for the ion than for the neutral system. Once these static correlation effects are included by using complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) wave functions that include internal correlation terms, the resulting ΔSCF BEs are, as expected, smaller than measured values.

X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopies are tools in widespread use for providing detailed local atomic structure, oxidation state, and magnetic structure information for materials and organometallic complexes. The analysis of these spectra for transition-metal L-edges is routinely performed on the basis of ligand-field multiplet theory because one- and two-particle mean-field ab initio methods typically cannot describe the multiplet structure. Here we show that multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) calculations can satisfactorily reproduce measured XANES spectra for a range of complex iron oxide materials including hematite and magnetite. MRCI Fe L 2,3 -edge XANES and XMCD spectra of Fe(II)O 6 , Fe(III)O 6 , and Fe(III)O 4 in magnetite are found to be in very good qualitative agreement with experiment and multiplet calculations. Point-charge embedding and small distortions of the first-shell oxygen ligands have only small effects. Oxygen K-edge XANES/XMCD spectra for magnetite investigated by a real-space Green's function approach complete the very good qualitative agreement with experiment. Material-specific differences in local coordination and site symmetry are well reproduced, making the approach useful for assigning spectral features to specific oxidation states and coordination environments.

One of the long standing debates in actinide chemistry is the level of localization and participation of the actinide 5f valence orbitals in covalent bonds across the actinide series. Here we illuminate the role of the 5f valence orbitals of uranium, neptunium and plutonium in chemical bonding using advanced spectroscopies: actinide M 4,5 HR-XANES and 3d4f RIXS. Results reveal that the 5f orbitals are active in the chemical bonding for uranium and neptunium, shown by significant variations in the level of their localization evidenced in the spectra. In contrast, the 5f orbitals of plutonium appear localized and surprisingly insensitive to different bonding environments. We envisage that this report of using relative energy differences between the 5fδ/φ and 5fπ*/5fσ* orbitals as a qualitative measure of overlap-driven actinyl bond covalency will spark activity, and extend to numerous applications of RIXS and HR-XANES to gain new insights into the electronic structures of the actinide elements.

The interaction of benzene with a Ag(111) surface has been determined using reliable ab initio electronic structure calculations. The results are compared to a recent detailed analysis of the interaction of benzene with copper and gold surfaces, thus making it possible to derive a consistent picture for the electronic structure changes encountered when benzene is brought into contact with the densely packed coinage metal surfaces. To avoid the problems encountered when the presently most frequently employed computational approach, density functional theory (DFT), is applied to adsorbate systems where dispersion (or van der Waals) forces contribute substantially, we use a wavefunction-based approach. In this approach, the weak van der Waals interactions, which are dominated by correlation effects, are described using second-order perturbation theory. The surface dipole moment and the work function changes induced upon adsorption are also discussed.

We report a combined X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and chronoamperometry (CA) study of formic acid electrooxidation on unsupported palladium nanoparticle catalysts in the particle size range from 9 to 40 nm. The CV and CA measurements show that the most active catalyst is made of the smallest (9 and 11 nm) Pd nanoparticles. Besides the high reactivity, XPS data show that such nanoparticles display the highest core-level binding energy (BE) shift and the highest valence band (VB) center downshift with respect to the Fermi level. We believe therefore that we found a correlation between formic acid oxidation current and BE and VB center shifts, which, in turn, can directly be related to the electronic structure of palladium nanoparticles of different particle sizes. Clearly, such a trend using unsupported catalysts has never been reported. According to the density functional theory of heterogeneous catalysis, and mechanistic considerations, the observed shifts are caused by a weakening of the bond strength of the COOH intermediate adsorption on the catalyst surface. This, in turn, results in the increase in the formic acid oxidation rate to CO2 (and in the associated oxidation current). Overall, our measurements demonstrate the particle size effect on the electronic properties of palladium that yields different catalytic activity in the HCOOH oxidation reaction. Our work highlights the significance of the core-level binding energy and center of the d-band shifts in electrocatalysis and underlines the value of the theory that connects the center of the d-band shifts to catalytic reactivity.

Spectroscopic and bonding properties of Hg(n) oligomers and *Hg(n) exciplexes are determined by rigorous theoretical treatments. Reliable values that agree well with experimental data have been computed for the luminescence energies and other molecular spectroscopic parameters by making a careful selection of theoretical methods and basis sets. The calculations clarified the assignments for several phosphorescence bands in the mercury vapor based on calculated energies and other parameters that quantify the large excited-state distortion in the emitting states. Both the weak ground-state mercurophilic bonding and the stronger covalent bonding in the triplet and quintet excited states studied are found to be cooperative, which is important for fundamental and applied research for luminescent and magnetic materials that have spectral behavior similar to that of Hg(n) systems.
