Des analyses par uranium-thorium (U–Th-TIMS), par résonance de spin électronique combinée à l’U–Th (ESR/U–Th) et par luminescence stimulée optiquement (OSL) ont été réalisées sur des échantillons provenant de la formation de Waziers, en France septentrionale. Ces trois méthodes ont été respectivement appliquées sur un échantillon de gyrogonite provenant d’un niveau corrélé à l’unité stratigraphique US5, sur des dents d’herbivore provenant de l’unité US4 sous-jacente ou recueillies en limite des US4 et US5 et sur deux prélèvements sédimentaires de l’US4. Les résultats obtenus permettent de dater la mise en place des unités ayant livré les dents analysées de la transition entre le Tardiglaciaire saalien (SIM, 6) et l’Interglaciaire eemien (SIM 5e), en bon accord avec les données paléoenvironnementales disponibles, issues des études malacologiques et palynologiques. Les dates OSL obtenues sur les deux échantillons de sédiments de l’US4 sont globalement compatibles avec celles obtenues par ESR/U–Th sur des dents issues de cette même unité ou de la limite entre US4 et US5. L’âge obtenu sur la gyrogonite, bien qu’indiquant un âge contemporain du SIM 5, apparaît pour sa part légèrement sous-estimé et doit donc bien être considéré comme un âge minimum. Uranium-series (u-series-tims), electron spin resonance combined with u-series (esr/u-series) and optically stimulated luminescence (osl) analyses were carried out on one gyrogonite sample correlated to stratigraphic unit us5, three herbivore teeth collected from unit us4 and at the limit between US4 and US5, and two sediment samples from unit US4 of the Waziers Formation, northern France, respectively. Results enable a correlation of the dated levels to the transition between the Saalian Late Glacial (MIS 6) and the Eemian Interglacial (MIS 5e) periods, in good agreement with the palaeoenvironmental data available from malacological and palynological studies. In addition, OSL results are overall compatible with the combined ESR/U-series age estimates on teeth recovered from the same unit (US4). In contrast, the U-series dating of the gyrogonite provides a MIS 5 age that appears to be slightly underestimated, and should therefore be considered as a minimum age constraint.

La Formation de Waziers est constituée d’un dépôt alluvial limoneux surmonté de tuf calcaire et de tourbe. Elle est conservée dans un petit paléo-chenal de la rivière Scarpe-Scarbus, reconnu sur plusieurs centaines de mètres de long à l’entrée de la plaine de la Scarpe et daté de la fin du Saalien (SIM 6) et de l’Eemien (SIM 5e). La Formation de Waziers a été préservée à la faveur d’une défluviation ultérieure à son dépôt puis de son scellement par des dépôts fluvio-éoliens de la fin du Pléniglaciaire weichselien (SIM 2). La synthèse de l’ensemble des données et études (lithologie, paléontologie, géochronologie, reconstitution des paléotem- pératures) fournit une image cohérente de l’évolution de la zone depuis la fin du Saalien vers 130 000 ans environ jusqu’à la fin du Pléniglaciaire weichselien. À la base, les alluvions sablo-graveleuses (témoignant d’écoulements dynamiques) puis limoneuses (Membre 1) se déposent dans le fond de vallée à la fin du glaciaire saalien dans un contexte d’amorce de reconquête forestière. Un plan d’eau se développe ensuite, permettant le dépôt d’une craie lacustre dans un marais à Characées puis d’une tourbière (Membre 2, env. 1,5 m d’épaisseur) dans un contexte forestier. Un cours d’eau chenalisé circule encore dans la tourbière, au moins par intermittence, érodant et déposant localement des alluvions limoneuses. La partie inférieure du Membre 2 enregistre la transition du glaciaire Saalien (fin SIM 6) à l’Interglaciaire eemien (début SIM 5e) dans un contexte de sédimentation continue de plus en plus organique. La partie supérieure du Membre 2 enregistre l’optimum climatique eemien dans un faciès de tourbe typique, puis l’amorce d’une dégradation climatique. Au toit du Membre 2 (et celui de la Formation) est observée la limite d’une érosion majeure qui n’a pas permis l’enregistrement de la fin de l’Interglaciaire eemien. À la base du Membre 3 (env. 3 m d’épaisseur), des écoule- ments concentrés dans des ravines profondes sur sol gelé démantèlent et remanient les dépôts sous-jacents. Ensuite, des écoulements (attribués au Pléniglaciaire weichselien) déposent une nappe de graviers de craie sur l’ensemble du site dans une bande active plus large (probable tressage). La majeure partie du Membre 3 est constituée de dépôts limono-sableux fluvio-éoliens et d’un mince dépôt loessique terminal. La qualité de l’enregistrement sédimentaire de la formation de Waziers, avec notamment un dépôt continu au moment de la transition climatique du Saalien à l’Eemien, et l’abondance des éléments paléontologiques (bois et macrorestes végétaux, macro et méso-faune, microfaune, avifaune, malacofaune…) dans les dépôts eemiens font de celle-ci un témoin exceptionnel pour les recons- titutions paléoenvironnementales et paléoclimatiques de cette période. La présence de niveaux témoignant d’occupations humaines récurrentes dans les Membres 1 et 2 (éclats isolés, amas de débitage, traces d’actions anthropiques sur faune) font de ce site et de cette séquence une référence pour la compréhension des dynamiques de peuplement humain entre le SIM 6 (Saalien) et le SIM 5e (Eemien) dans le Nord de la France et plus largement dans le Nord-Ouest de l’Europe. The Waziers Formation consists of a silty alluvial deposit topped by calcareous tuff and peat. It is preserved in a small palaeo- channel of the Scarpe-Scarbus river, recognised over several hundred metres long at the edge/entrance of the Scarpe river plain and dated to the end of the Saalian (SIM 6) and the Eemian (SIM 5e). The Waziers Formation was preserved by a later defluviation and the sealing by fluvio-aeolian deposits of the late Weichselian Pleniglacial (SIM 2). The synthesis of all the data and studies (lithology, palaeontology, geochronology, reconstruction of palaeotemperatures) provides a coherent picture of the evolution of the area since the end of the Saalian around 130,000 years ago to the end of the Weichselian Pleniglacial. At the base, sandy-gravelly (indicating dynamic flows) and then silty alluvium (Member 1) was deposited in the valley bottom at the end of the Saalian glacial period in a context of incipient forest reconquest. A water body then develops, allowing the sedimentation of a lacustrine chalk deposited in a Characeae marsh, followed by a peat bog (Member 2, ca. 1.5 m thick) in a forest context. A channelled stream still flows through the bog, at least intermittently, locally eroding and depositing silty alluvium. The lower part of Member 2 records the transition from the Saalian glacial (end of MIS 6) to the Eemian interglacial (beginning of MIS 5) in a context of continuous sedimentation with increasing organic content. The upper part of Member 2 records the Eemian climatic optimum in a typical peat facies, followed by the onset of climatic degradation. At the top of Member 2 (and that of the Formation) is the limit of a major erosion that did not allow the recording of the end of the Eemian interglacial. At the base of Member 3 (ca. 3 m thick) flows concentrated in deep gullies on frozen ground dismantle and rework the underlying deposits. Subsequently, flows (attributed to the Weichselian Pleniglacial) deposit a sheet of chalk gravels over the whole site in a wider active band (likely braiding). Most of Member 3 consists of fluvio-aeolian silty-sandy deposits and a thin terminal loessic deposit. The quality of the sedimentary record, with in particular continuous depo- sition at the time of the climatic transition from the Saalien to the Eemian, and the abundance of palaeontological elements (wood and plant macro-remains, macro- and meso-fauna, microfauna, avifauna, malacofauna...) in the Eemian deposits ensure the Waziers Formation is an exceptional testimony for the palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic reconstructions. The presence of levels testying to recurrent human occupations in Members 1 and 2 (with isolated flakes, heaps of debitage, traces of anthropic actions on fauna) make this site and sequence a reference for the understanding of the human settlement dynamics from the MIS 6 (Saalian) to the MIS 5e (Eemian) in Northern France but also broadly in North-Western Europe.

Carbonated rocks constitute one of the main lithologies of the southeastern Tibet area, China, a tectonically very active zone. However, due to the lack of suitable dating materials, it is difficult to carry out chronological studies of the local tectonic evolution in such carbonate areas. In the present study, electron spin resonance (ESR) method had been applied on the dating of carbonates heated during fault activity of the Lijiang-Xiaojinhe (LX) Fault, an important active fault located in the northwest of Yunnan Province. Clear displaced landforms show that the fault has undergone strong late-Quaternary activity. During the fault activity, the heat produced by friction lead to the melting of the frictional surface of the rocks, and the melting can attenuate or zero the ESR dating signal of carbonate. The aim of the present paper was to check the ability of carbonate use to chronologically identify fault activity using electron spin resonance (ESR) method. The results showed the last fault activity of the LX fault was dated by ESR about 2.0±0.2 ka ago, in agreement with historical and radiocarbon data. Hence ESR can be if necessary a practicable dating alternative method for the study of fault activity chronology in carbonate rock area.

International audience; Palaeolithic sites associated to the Eemian Interglacial (MIS 5e) are very rare in Northern France and their preservation is restricted to very specific geological contexts, in association with carbonated tufa (Caours) or peat deposits (Waziers). In order to check the reliability of ESR/U-series method to date teeth recovered from archaeological levels in so specific geological environments, teeth were sampled on these two Middle Palaeolithic sites and systematic in situ dosimetry was performed using portable gamma spectrometer. The ESR/U-series ages obtained on the Caours site are very homogeneous allowing the calculation of a mean age equal to 125 ± 4 ka, in agreement with the geological age and other available geochronological data (U-series on carbonate, TL on heated flints, OSL on sediments) and despite an relatively heterogeneous dosimetric environment (gamma dose rate ranging between ca 200 to 450 µGy/a). At Waziers, reducing chemical environment linked to the peat lead to very specific U-series data of the analysed teeth (U content lower than 0.1 ppm in all the dental tissues, evidence of leaching in some tissues), but the mean ESR/U-series age, 129 ± 4 ka, is also in agreement with the available geological and palaeoenvironmental data. These two studies confirm the reliability of ESR/U-series method to date with relative accuracy archaeological levels linked to such relatively short climatic event.

C’est autour de l’année 1859 que la préhistoire s’affirme, à l’échelle de l’Europe, comme un domaine de recherche nouveau et fécond. Les grandes disciplines des sciences naturelles (géologie, paléontologie…) et des sciences de l’homme (archéologie, histoire, philologie…) participent à la création de cette nouvelle science à travers les débats fondateurs portant sur l’ancienneté de l’homme et sur son origine animale. En une décennie, c’est toute la conception des origines de l’humanité qui s’en trouve bouleversée de façon profonde et durable au moment même où se diffuse la théorie darwinienne de l’évolution. Cet ouvrage propose une relecture de cette période primordiale de l’histoire de l’archéologie préhistorique. Pour cela, il s’intéresse non seulement aux découvertes et aux idées qui ont nourri la connaissance mais également aux acteurs (chercheurs officiels et amateurs) et aux institutions (congrès, revues, sociétés savantes, musées, Muséum…) qui ont porté son développement et son rayonnement. Cette étude se place en continuité avec les démarches actuelles de la recherche sur les premières industries du Nord de la France et de la muséologie de la préhistoire.

International audience; For the past decade, debates on the earliest evidence of bifacial shaping in Western Europe have focused on several key issues, such as its origin (i.e., local or introduced), or on what should define the Acheulean culture. Whatever hypotheses are proposed for its origin, the onset and technological strategies for making Large Cutting Tools (LCTs), including biface production, are key issues and are often associated with other behavioural changes, such as increased core technology complexity. Current archaeological patterns do not support the existence of transitional industries. Rather, the scant evidence suggests that biface production associated with the management of bifacial volume was widespread around 700 ka. Among the earliest sites, the site of Notarchirico in Southern Italy stands out as one of the most significant examples. 40Ar/39Ar ages and ESR dates recently provided a revised chronology for the whole sedimentary sequence and constrained the archaeological levels between ca. 610 and 670 ka. Five archaeosurfaces (A, A1, B, D and F) yielded LCTs, including bifaces, during Marcello Piperno’s excavations from 1980 to 1995. In light of this new chronological framework, which is much shorter than previously thought, we propose in this contribution a revision of the bifaces by applying the “chaine opératoire” method for the first time (analysis of reduction processes). Our goals are to assess biface production in this early Western European locality and to characterize the strategies applied at the site throughout the sequence. A corpus of 32 tools was selected from the A-A1, B, D and F archaeosurfaces. The technological analysis shows that hominins had the capacity to manage bifacial volumes, when raw material quality was adequate. Clear differences do not emerge between the different levels in terms of shaping modes or final forms. However, we demonstrate that the oldest level (level F), with the richest corpus, lacks flint and displays a higher diversity of bifaces. This ability to manage bifacial and bilateral equilibrium, as well as the diversity of the morphological results, is observed in a few penecontemporaneous sites (700–600 ka), both in the north-western and southern parts of Western Europe. These patterns suggest that hominins mastered well-controlled and diversified biface production, combining intense shaping and minimal shaping, and shared a common technological background regardless of the geographical area, and applied this technology regardless of the available raw materials. The degree of skill complexity of hominins in Western Europe between 700 and 600 ka, the current lack of evidence suggesting “gradual industries” between core-and-flake series and Acheulean techno-complexes, raise numerous questions on the origin of new behaviours in Western Europe, their mode of diffusion, and their association with Homo heidelbergensis or other Middle Pleistocene populations.

Le fameux site de Saint-Pierre-lès-Elbeuf (Seine-Maritime), connu depuis la fin du XIXe siècle, a fait l’objet de nouvelles investigations depuis 2004 visant à préciser le contexte chronostratigraphique et environnemental dans un cadre chronologique fondé sur les datations radiomériques. En 2011, les travaux ont porté sur les niveaux les plus anciens du site datés entre 500 000 et 350 000 ans. Les sables sous-jacents au tuf et datés de l’interglaciaire du stade 11 de la chronologie isotopique ont livré des silex taillés de l’Acheuléen, en position primaire et plus en aval, des vestiges de faune en position secondaire. New investigations started in 2004 on the famous Saint-Pierre-lès-Elbeuf site, which was discovered at the end of the 19th Century, with the aim of determining its chronostratigraphic and environmental timescale based on radiometric dating. In 2011, work was performed on the site´s oldest strata, which are estimated to between 500,000 and 350,000 years old. The sediment below the tufa dating to the interglacial Isotope Stage 11 identified some sharp Acheulean flints in the primary layer and in a downstream position, while faunal remains were present in the secondary layer.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2018-05-01 We have explored the multimethod approach combining 40Ar/39Ar on single crystal, ESR on bleached quartz, and ESR/U-series on teeth to improve the age of four neighbours “Acheulian” sites of the Frosinone Province (Latium, Italy): Fontana Ranuccio, Cava Pompi (Pofi), Isoletta, and Lademagne. Ages obtained by the three methods are in mutual agreement and confirm the potential of dating with confidence Middle Pleistocene sites of Italy using these methods. At Fontana Ranuccio, the 40Ar/39Ar age (408 ± 10 ka, full external error at 2σ) obtained for the archaeological level (unit FR4) and geochemical analyses of glass shards performed on the Unit FR2a layer allow us to attribute the studied volcanic material to the Pozzolane Nere volcanic series, a well-known caldera-forming event originated from the Colli Albani volcanic district. These new data ascribe the Fontana Ranuccio site, as well as the eponym faunal unit, to the climatic optimum of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 11. Ages obtained for the Cava Pompi, Isoletta, and Lademagne sites cover a relatively short period of time between 408 ka and 375 ka, spanning MIS 11 climatic optimum to the MIS 11–10 transition. Analysis of small collections of lithic industries, bifacial tools, and small cores technologies from Isoletta, Lademagne, and the neighbour site of Ceprano-Campogrande shows common technical strategies for the period comprised between MIS 11 and MIS 9 (410–325 ka), such as the elaboration of flaked elephant bone industries found over the whole Latium region. However, some features found only in the Frosinone province area, like large-sized bifaces, suggest particular regional behaviours. The presence of one Levallois core in the oldest layer of Lademagne (i.e. > 405 ± 9 ka) suggests a punctual practice of this technology, also proposed as early as MIS 10/11 in the neighbour site of Guado San Nicola (Molise) in central Italy. International audience; The rates and chronologies of valley incision are closely modulated by the tectonic uplift of active mountain ranges and were controlled by repeated climate changes during the Quaternary. The Pyrenees are a continental collision between the Iberian and Eurasian plates induced a double vergence orogen, which has been considered as a mature mountain range in spite of significant seismicity and evidence of neotectonics. Nevertheless, recent studies indicate that the range may have never reached a steady state. One option for resolving this controversy is to quantify the incision rates since the Miocene by reconstructing the vertical movement of geometric markers. However, the few available ages from the Pyrenean terrace systems do not exceed the middle Pleistocene. To enlarge the time span of this dataset, we studied alluvium-filled horizontal epiphreatic passages in limestone karstic networks, which represent former valley floors. They record the transient position of former local base levels during the process of valley deepening. We used various suitable geochronological methods (26Al/10Be, 10Be/21Ne, ESR and OSL burial durations on quartz) on intrakarstic alluvial deposits from three valleys of the central and eastern Pyrenees, as well as on a recent analogue. In the Pyrenean context, under particular conditions, these geochronometers allow us to document incision processes since ~ 16-13 Ma, and to study influences of external forcing and eustatism. In comparison with other studies, it appears that incision rates are higher in the central Pyrenees and for the Spanish slope. However, the density of horizontal levels on an altimetric range, the geodynamical and paleoclimatic contexts, the reorganization of the drainage networks can make the filling stories of the networks more complex than expected. Indeed, these radiometric approaches may be limited when some formations are reworked inside and/or outside the karst. The validity of dosimetric methods in a mountainous context, and quartz bleaching conditions at the time of deposition will also be discussed. In the last few decades, new discoveries have pushed the beginning of the biface-rich European Acheulian from 500 thousand years (ka) ago back to at least 700 ka, and possibly to 1 million years (Ma) ago. It remains, however, unclear to date if handaxes arrived in Europe as a fully developed technology or if they evolved locally from core-and-flake industries. This issue is also linked with another long-standing debate on the existence and behavioral, cognitive, and social meaning of a possibly chronological trend for increased handaxe symmetry throughout the Lower Paleolithic. The newly discovered sites can provide a link between the much older Acheulian in Africa and the Levant and the well-known assemblages from the later European Acheulian, enabling a rigorous testing of these hypotheses using modern morphometric methods. Here we use the Continuous Symmetry Measure (CSM) method to quantify handaxe symmetry at la Noira, a newly excavated site in central France, which features two archaeological levels, respectively ca. 700 ka and 500 ka old. In order to provide a context for the new data, we use a large aggregate from the well-known 500 ka old site of Boxgrove, England. We show that handaxes from the oldest layer at la Noira, although on average less symmetric than both those from the younger layers at the same site and than those from Boxgrove, are nevertheless much more symmetric than other early Acheulian specimens evaluated using the CSM method. We also correlate trends in symmetry to degree of reduction, demonstrating that raw material availability and discard patterns may affect observed symmetry values. We conclude that it is likely that, by the time the Acheulian arrived in Europe, its makers were, from a cognitive and motor-control point of view, already capable of producing the symmetric variant of this technology.

Excavated between 2005 and 2007, the site of Vallparadís (Terrassa, Spain) has given an abundant and diversified fauna associated with a rich Mode 1 industry. In order to complete the chronostratigraphic framework, we performed ESR and combined US-ESR dating applied to quartz grains extracted from sediments and fossil teeth, respectively. The results obtained are very significant, giving a weighted mean ESR age of 0.83 ± 0.13 Ma (2σ) for the reference archaeological level of the site (level 10) and another of 0.79 ± 0.23 Ma (2σ) for the archaeological level 12 of the Vallparadís sequence. These ESR results are in total agreement with the ones derived from biochronology and paleomagnetism. This whole dataset allows the elaboration of a reliable and consistent chronostratigraphic framework which chronologically places Vallparadís site in the late Early Pleistocene period, i.e. within a time range comprised between Jaramillo and Brunhes geomagnetic events. Consequently, as well as Gran Dolina-TD6 and Sima del Elefante- TE9 sites, in Atapuerca, Burgos, Vallparadís can be therefore considered as a key site for the study of early hominid settlements in Europe., Excavado entre 2005 y 2007, el yacimiento de Vallparadís (Terrassa, España) ha aportado una fauna rica y diversa en asociación con un importante conjunto lítico de Modo 1. Con el objetivo de completar el marco cronoestratigráfico, se hicieron dataciones por los métodos de Resonancia Paramagnética Electrónica (Electron Spin Resonance, ESR) y ESR combinada con uranio-torio sobre algunas muestras de granos de cuarzo extraídos de sedimentos y dientes fósiles, respectivamente. Los resultados obtenidos son muy significativos, ofreciendo edades ESR promedias de 0,83 ± 0,13 Ma (2σ) para el nivel arqueológico de referencia del yacimiento (nivel 10) y de 0,79 ± 0,23 Ma (2σ) para el nivel arqueológico 12 de la secuencia de Vallparadís. Dichos resultados por ESR concuerdan con los obtenidos a partir de la biocronología y del paleomagnetismo. El yacimiento de Vallparadís dispone ahora de un marco cronoestratigráfico fiable y coherente, que permite situarlo cronológicamente a finales del Pleistoceno inferior, dentro de un rango temporal comprendido entre los eventos geomagnéticos de Jaramillo y Brunhes. Dicho yacimiento junto a los de Gran Dolina TD-6 y Sima del Elefante TE-9, en Atapuerca, Burgos, se posiciona como un yacimiento clave para el estudio de los primeros poblamientos humanos de Europa.

International audience; Valle Giumentina is a Pleistocene open-air site in Central Italy (Abruzzo). Nine archaeological layers occur in the last 25 m of a 70 m thick sedimentary sequence. In the 1950s, the various archaeological layers were attributed to the Clactonian, Acheulian and Levalloisian traditions. Recent multidisciplinary fieldwork and studies (2012–2016) acquired new archaeological, chronostratigraphical and paleoenvironmental data. This contribution presents the preliminary results of the ongoing excavation of layer 42-ALB. This is a paleosol located at 4 m depth, at the top of a lacustrine deposit directly below the coarse deposits associated with the last major erosive event. Faunal remains consisted essentially by Cervus elaphus. The lithic series is characterized by a specific flake production system: only a part of the block is reduced, and platforms and surfaces are not prepared. Several methods are used, including the SSDA (système par surfaces de débitage alternées). Backed flakes are frequent. Numerous blanks are transformed by intensive or marginal retouch. Functional objectives are multiple, as shown by different tool structures and use-wear traces. Valle Giumentina 42-ALB is a butchery site used briefly but frequently during warmer substages occurring during an overall cold period. The “Clactonian” industry of Valle Giumentina is often considered as simple or expedient: we demonstrate its real technical complexity and its functional significance. Comparisons are made with other European sites.

La géoarchéologie s’impose aujourd’hui comme une composante majeure de la compréhension des interactions complexes Sociétés-Environnement sur le temps long. Cet ouvrage, le premier du genre, dresse un bilan des recherches géoarchéologiques conduites dans les universités, au CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), à l’INRAP (Institut National de Recherches Archéologiques Préventives) et dans les SRA (Services Régionaux de l’Archéologie) depuis trente ans. Les cinq parties de l’ouvrage étayent l’ensemble des champs d’application de la géoarchéologie française : « Paléoenvironnements, biogéographie et paysages » ; « Les hydrosystèmes fluviaux, entre climat et anthropisation » ; « Alluvionnement, peuplement, stratégies et formes d’adaptation » ; « Ressources en eau, risque et aménagement » ; « De la mobilité du trait de côte à la contrainte portuaire ». Une attention particulière est accordée aux attendus épistémologiques, aux concepts et aux méthodes d’investigation sur le « terrain » de la géoarchéologie moderne, par essence interdisciplinaire. Les sites archéologiques sont étudiés dans des contextes environnementaux variés : fluvial, deltaïque et littoral, zones humides, îles et environnements urbains. Chaque « grand chantier » présenté, qu’il se situe en France ou à l’étranger (Albanie, Égypte, Grèce, Italie, Luxembourg, Mali, Maroc, Turquie), fait état des dernières découvertes, des méthodes les plus pertinentes, des synthèses les plus à jour, des hypothèses les plus solides sur les interactions spécifiques entre l’Homme et son environnement depuis des milliers d’années. Conçu à partir d’une pratique forte du terrain, de l’enseignement et de la diffusion scientifique, ce livre s’adresse à un large public : enseignants, chercheurs, étudiants L-M-D, archéologie préventive, conservatoires du patrimoine, musées archéologiques, grand public curieux de connaissances pluridisciplinaires de son patrimoine archéologique replacé dans son contexte environnemental. L’étudiant y trouvera un véritable support de cours dispensés à l’Université et dans les écoles d’urbanisme, d’architecture et de paysage, le chercheur disposera d’un ouvrage exhaustif mettant en exergue des méthodes choisies et transposables à ses propres sites d’étude. L’ouvrage fait également valoir un engagement théorique, des choix d’approche et une perspective débouchant sur une meilleure connaissance de nos « patrimoines territoriaux », désormais pris en compte dans toute démarche d’aménagement (archéologie préventive). Cette connaissance est devenue « l’incontournable » du géographe, de l’urbaniste, de l’architecte, du paysagiste, du responsable de projet d’aménagement…

International audience; In connection with the future Canal Seine-Nord Europe (Seine-Scheldt), a large-scale rescue archaeological survey was conducted between 2008 and 2011 in northern France. At Havrincourt (Pas-de-Calais), the discovery of several levels of Palaeolithic flint artefacts embedded in a relatively thick loess sequence (~ 6-7m) preserved on a gentle slope facing north-east, has resulted in a rescue archaeological excavation on a total surface of 6 000 m2. Four Palaeolithic levels were uncovered in primary position. This sequence has been the subject of a continuous stratigraphic survey over nine months and an interdisciplinary approach combining pedostratigraphy, sedimentology, micromorphology, palaeontology, malacology, environmental magnetism, OSL and 14C dating. Based on this research, we propose: 1) a new pedostratigraphic reference sequence for Northern France, especially with regard to the Lower and Middle Pleniglacial periods (~ 70-30 ka), 2) a new regional geochronological framework for the Last Glacial (luminescence and radiocarbon) as well as a revision of the regional pedostratigraphic and chrono-climatic systems, and 3) the description and dating of a unique succession of periglacial horizons including five ice-wedge cast networks associated with tundra gley horizons representing a first regional reference sequence. In addition, the good preservation of archaeological levels, associated with the multidisciplinary analysis and dating of the pedosedimentary sequences leads to the chronostratigraphic and chrono-climatic interpretation of the four Palaeolithic levels including a unique occupation related to the Early Upper Palaeolithic (Early Gravettian). These results and new discoveries allow us to propose Havrincourt as a new pedostratigraphic and archaeological reference sequence for the Late Pleistocene of northern France and more broadly for the west-European loess area.; Dans le cadre des travaux préalables au creusement du futur Canal Seine-Nord-Europe (liaison Seine-Escaut), une opération de diagnostic archéologique de grande ampleur a été menée entre 2008 et 2011 dans le nord de la France. A Havrincourt (Pas-de-Calais), la découverte de plusieurs niveaux de silex paléolithiques inclus dans une séquence loessique relativement épaisse (~ 6-7m) préservée sur un versant en pente douce exposé nord-est a débouché sur une opération de fouille sur une surface totale de 6 000 m2. Quatre niveaux paléolithiques en position primaire ont été mis au jour. Cette séquence a fait l’objet d’un travail de suivi stratigraphique en continu sur plus de neuf mois et d’une approche interdisciplinaire associant pédostratigraphie, sédimentologie, micromorphologie, paléontologie, malacologie, magnétisme environnemental, datations OSL et 14C. Sur la base de ces recherches, nous proposons : 1) une nouvelle séquence pédostratigraphique de référence pour le nord de la France, notamment en ce qui concerne le début du Pléniglaciaire inférieur et le Pléniglaciaire moyen (˷ 70-30 ka), 2) un nouveau canevas géochronologique régional pour le Dernier Glaciaire (datations par luminescence et radiocarbone) ainsi qu’une révision du schéma pédostratigraphique et chrono-climatique régional, et 3) la description et la datation d’une succession unique d’horizons périglaciaires comportant cinq réseaux de fentes associés à des gleys de toundra qui constitue une première séquence régionale de référence. Par ailleurs, la bonne conservation des niveaux archéologiques, associée à l’analyse pluridisciplinaire de la séquence pédosédimentaire et aux datations, débouche sur le calage chronostratigraphique et chrono-climatique précis des quatre niveaux paléolithiques fouillés incluant un ensemble exceptionnel attribuable au Paléolithique supérieur ancien (Gravettien ancien). Ces résultats et découvertes font d’Havrincourt une nouvelle séquence pédostratigraphique et archéologique de référence pour le Pléistocène supérieur de la France septentrionale et plus largement pour la zone loessique ouest-européenne.
