We demonstrate an effective and optimal strategy for generating spatially resolved longitudinal spin angular momentum (LSAM) in optical tweezers by tightly focusing first-order azimuthally radially polarized (ARP) vector beams with zero intrinsic angular momentum into a refractive index (RI) stratified medium. The stratified medium gives rise to a spherically aberrated intensity profile near the focal region of the optical tweezers, with off-axis intensity lobes in the radial direction possessing opposite LSAM (helicities corresponding to $\sigma = +1$ and -1) compared to the beam centre. We trap mesoscopic birefringent particles in an off-axis intensity lobe as well as at the beam center by modifying the trapping plane, and observe particles spinning in opposite directions depending on their location. The direction of rotation depends on particle size with large particles spinning either clockwise (CW) or anticlockwise (ACW) depending on the direction of spirality of the polarization of the ARP vector beam after tight focusing, while smaller particles spin in both directions depending on their spatial location. Numerical simulations support our experimental observations. Control affine assumptions, human inputs are external disturbances, in certified safe controller synthesis approaches are frequently violated in operational deployment under causal human actions. This paper takes a human-in-the-loop human-in-the-plant (HIL-HIP) approach towards ensuring operational safety of safety critical autonomous systems: human and real world controller (RWC) are modeled as a unified system. A three-way interaction is considered: a) through personalized inputs and biological feedback processes between HIP and HIL, b) through sensors and actuators between RWC and HIP, and c) through personalized configuration changes and data feedback between HIL and RWC. We extend control Lyapunov theory by generating barrier function (CLBF) under human action plans, model the HIL as a combination of Markov Chain for spontaneous events and Fuzzy inference system for event responses, the RWC as a black box, and integrate the HIL-HIP model with neural architectures that can learn CLBF certificates. Artificial Intelligence-enabled systems are increasingly being deployed in real-world safety-critical settings involving human participants. It is vital to ensure the safety of such systems and stop the evolution of the system with error before causing harm to human participants. We propose a model-agnostic approach to detecting unknown errors in such human-centered systems without requiring any knowledge about the error signatures. Our approach employs dynamics-induced hybrid recurrent neural networks (DiH-RNN) for constructing physics-based models from operational data, coupled with conformal inference for assessing errors in the underlying model caused by violations of physical laws, thereby facilitating early detection of unknown errors before unsafe shifts in operational data distribution occur. We have developed a rectangular loop interferometer (RLI) that confines light in a rectangular path and facilitates various interesting applications. Such a device can yield the sum of numerous geometric series converging to different values between zero and one by the use of simple intra-cavity beam splitters - both polarization-independent and dependent. Losses - principally due to alignment issues of the beam in the RLI - limit the average accuracy of the series sum value to be between 90 - 98\% with the computation speed determined by the bandwidth of the detectors. In addition, with a circularly polarized input Gaussian beam, and a combination of half-wave plate and q-plate inserted into the interferometer path, the device can generate a vortex beam that carries orbital angular momentum (OAM) of all orders of topological charge. The OAM is generated due to the spin-orbit interaction of light, and the topological charge increases with each successive pass of the beam inside the interferometer. However, experimentally, only the third order of OAM could be measured since projecting out individual orders entailed a slight misalignment of the interferometer, which caused higher orders to go out of resonance. Furthermore, with input linear polarization, the device can generate a vector beam bearing a superposition of polarization states resembling the multipole expansion of a charge distribution. Even here, experimentally, we were able to quantify the polarization distribution up to the third order using a Stokes vector analysis of the vector beam, with the size of the polarization singularity region increasing as the polarization states evolve inside the interferometer. We report a study on the dynamics of absorbing asymmetric carbon clusters trapped by a loosely focused Gaussian beam using photophoretic force. At high laser powers, all the trapped clusters display rotation coupled with oscillation along the axial direction, with a majority spinning about a body fixed axis, while the rest display dual spin as well as orbital motion about a fixed point in space. The spinning and orbiting frequency is inversely proportional to the amplitude of the axial oscillation - with one growing at the expense of the other. Further, the frequencies of these rotations are not proportional to the laser power, but to the trap stiffnesses inferred from the corresponding natural frequencies. The clusters also stop rotating below a certain laser power, and execute random thermal fluctuations. Our work suggests that the dynamics of clusters trapped with photophoretic force are largely dependent on the cluster size and morphology, which could, in principle, be tuned to obtain various motional responses, and help in the design of rotating micromachines in air.

This work explores knowledge distillation (KD) for visually-rich document (VRD) applications such as document layout analysis (DLA) and document image classification (DIC). While VRD research is dependent on increasingly sophisticated and cumbersome models, the field has neglected to study efficiency via model compression. Here, we design a KD experimentation methodology for more lean, performant models on document understanding (DU) tasks that are integral within larger task pipelines. We carefully selected KD strategies (response-based, feature-based) for distilling knowledge to and from backbones with different architectures (ResNet, ViT, DiT) and capacities (base, small, tiny). We study what affects the teacher-student knowledge gap and find that some methods (tuned vanilla KD, MSE, SimKD with an apt projector) can consistently outperform supervised student training. Furthermore, we design downstream task setups to evaluate covariate shift and the robustness of distilled DLA models on zero-shot layout-aware document visual question answering (DocVQA). DLA-KD experiments result in a large mAP knowledge gap, which unpredictably translates to downstream robustness, accentuating the need to further explore how to efficiently obtain more semantic document layout awareness., Comment: Accepted to ICDAR 2024 (Athens, Greece)

The present work looks for the possible existence of static and spherically symmetric wormhole geometries in Rastall-Rainbow gravity. Since, the Rastall-Rainbow gravity model has been constructed with the combination of Rastall theory and the gravity's rainbow formalism. Taking advantage of the Karmarkar condition for embedding class one metrics, we solve the modified field equations analytically that describe wormholes for specific choice of redshift function. For specific parameter ranges, the solution represents a traversable wormhole that exhibits the violation of null energy condition and consequently the weak energy condition also. Furthermore, we focus on the wormhole stability via adiabatic sound velocity analysis. We explore the usage of large language models (LLM) in human-in-the-loop human-in-the-plant cyber-physical systems (CPS) to translate a high-level prompt into a personalized plan of actions, and subsequently convert that plan into a grounded inference of sequential decision-making automated by a real-world CPS controller to achieve a control goal. We show that it is relatively straightforward to contextualize an LLM so it can generate domain-specific plans. However, these plans may be infeasible for the physical system to execute or the plan may be unsafe for human users. To address this, we propose CPS-LLM, an LLM retrained using an instruction tuning framework, which ensures that generated plans not only align with the physical system dynamics of the CPS but are also safe for human users. The CPS-LLM consists of two innovative components: a) a liquid time constant neural network-based physical dynamics coefficient estimator that can derive coefficients of dynamical models with some unmeasured state variables; b) the model coefficients are then used to train an LLM with prompts embodied with traces from the dynamical system and the corresponding model coefficients. We show that when the CPS-LLM is integrated with a contextualized chatbot such as BARD it can generate feasible and safe plans to manage external events such as meals for automated insulin delivery systems used by Type 1 Diabetes subjects., Comment: Accepted for publication in AAAI 2024, Planning for Cyber Physical Systems

Optically confined colloidal particles, when placed in close proximity, form a dissipatively coupled system through hydrodynamic interactions. Here, we demonstrate that these interactions can be harnessed to design systems with non-trivial and highly tunable non-equilibrium characteristics, directly quantifiable from experimental data. Furthermore, we clarify that such interactions do not modify the underlying potential energy function, nor do they violate the energy balance at the level of individual trajectories, as was believed earlier. We investigate the impact of $f(R,L_m,T)$ gravity on the internal structure of compact stars, expecting this theory to manifest prominently in the high-density cores of such stars. In this study, we begin by considering the algebraic function $f(R,L_m,T) = R + \alpha T L_m$, where $\alpha$ represents the matter-geometry coupling constant. We specifically choose the matter Lagrangian density $L_m= -\rho$ to explore compact stars with anisotropic pressure. To this end, we employ the MIT bag model as an equation of state. We then numerically solve the hydrostatic equilibrium equations to obtain mass-radius relations for quark stars, examining static stability criteria, the adiabatic index, and the speed of sound. Generating VectorArt from text prompts is a challenging vision task, requiring diverse yet realistic depictions of the seen as well as unseen entities. However, existing research has been mostly limited to the generation of single objects, rather than comprehensive scenes comprising multiple elements. In response, this work introduces SVGCraft, a novel end-to-end framework for the creation of vector graphics depicting entire scenes from textual descriptions. Utilizing a pre-trained LLM for layout generation from text prompts, this framework introduces a technique for producing masked latents in specified bounding boxes for accurate object placement. It introduces a fusion mechanism for integrating attention maps and employs a diffusion U-Net for coherent composition, speeding up the drawing process. The resulting SVG is optimized using a pre-trained encoder and LPIPS loss with opacity modulation to maximize similarity. Additionally, this work explores the potential of primitive shapes in facilitating canvas completion in constrained environments. Through both qualitative and quantitative assessments, SVGCraft is demonstrated to surpass prior works in abstraction, recognizability, and detail, as evidenced by its performance metrics (CLIP-T: 0.4563, Cosine Similarity: 0.6342, Confusion: 0.66, Aesthetic: 6.7832). Reflectionless potentials following the prescription of Kay and Moses allow for total transmission of incoming waves of any kinetic energy. The optical analogue of such potentials occur as dielectric stratified media that can offer null reflectivity and near total transmission over a large range of incidence angles and wavelengths. In a previous work (S. Dutta Gupta and G. S. Agarwal, Opt. Express 15, 9614-9624, 2007), this was demonstrated for linearly polarized plane waves. We extend the earlier work valid for plane waves to structured beams to show near-total transmission of beams across the reflectionless dielectric profile. The analysis is based on the angular spectrum decomposition treating the beam as a collection of plane waves. Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian beams are shown to be transmitted through the film with <1% reflection in most scenarios. We also discuss the superlative performance of our proposed profile in preserving the beam shape during transmission comparing these results to a conventional lambda/2 antireflection coating.

Object detection in documents is a key step to automate the structural elements identification process in a digital or scanned document through understanding the hierarchical structure and relationships between different elements. Large and complex models, while achieving high accuracy, can be computationally expensive and memory-intensive, making them impractical for deployment on resource constrained devices. Knowledge distillation allows us to create small and more efficient models that retain much of the performance of their larger counterparts. Here we present a graph-based knowledge distillation framework to correctly identify and localize the document objects in a document image. Here, we design a structured graph with nodes containing proposal-level features and edges representing the relationship between the different proposal regions. Also, to reduce text bias an adaptive node sampling strategy is designed to prune the weight distribution and put more weightage on non-text nodes. We encode the complete graph as a knowledge representation and transfer it from the teacher to the student through the proposed distillation loss by effectively capturing both local and global information concurrently. Extensive experimentation on competitive benchmarks demonstrates that the proposed framework outperforms the current state-of-the-art approaches. In the standard approach to studying wormhole geometry, the presence of dark energy is unavoidable to ensure traversability. The dark energy provides the negative gravity effect to keep the throat open. The question we analyse is whether the same can be achieved without dark energy. It turns out that if we couple the trace of energy-momentum with the standard Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian and utilise a sppecific equation of state then dark energy may be obviated. The Casimir stress energy is known to result in the violation of the null energy condition (NEC) on the energy momentum tensor. This phenomenon makes such an equation of state (EoS) an ideal candidate to generate traversable wormhole (WH) geometries. The laboratory proven phenomenon provides a mechanism to sustain an open WH throat without having to appeal to dark energy. We generate two classes of WH solutions with this in $f(R,T)$ gravity theory, where $R$ represents the Ricci scalar and $T$ is the trace of the stress-energy tensor. For the background geometry we choose a static and spherically symmetric metric, and derive the field equations for exact WH solutions. For the specific choice of the Casimir EoS relating the energy-momentum tensor components [ Kar and Sahdev: Phys. Rev D {\bf 52} 2030 (1995)] and different choices for redshift functions, we determine the WH geometry completely. The obtained WH solutions violate the NECs and all qualitative constraints demanded of physically realisable WHs are satisfied. This is demonstrated via graphical plots for a suitably chosen range of values of the $f(R,T)$ coupling parameter. Spin orbit interaction (SOI) due to tight focusing of light in optical tweezers has led to exciting and exotic avenues towards inducing rotation in microscopic particles. However, instances where the back action of the particles influences and modifies SOI effects so as to induce rotational motion are rarely known. Here, we tightly focus a vector beam having radial/azimuthal polarization carrying no intrinsic angular momentum, into a refractive index stratified medium, and observe orbital rotation of birefringent particles around the beam propagation axis. In order to validate our experimental findings, we perform numerical simulations of the underlying equations. Our simulations reveal that the interaction of light with a birefringent particle gives rise to inhomogeneous spin currents near the focus, resulting in a finite spin momentum. This spin momentum combines with the canonical momentum to finally generate an origin-dependent orbital angular momentum which is manifested in the rotation of the birefringent particles around the beam axis. We observe clear precessional motion of highly birefringent liquid crystal (LC) particles trapped in a spherically aberrated optical trap which is built around a tilted refractive index stratified medium. For input circularly polarized light, the breaking of azimuthal symmetry induced by the tilt leads to an asymmetric intensity distribution in the radial direction near the trap focal plane, which - in combination with the spin-orbit conversion effects for input circularly polarized light - results in non-uniform canonical and spin momentum densities in those regions. In addition, while the canonical momentum remains always oriented towards the axial direction, the spin momentum reverses direction along spatial loops in the radial direction. As a consequence, the total momentum precesses around the canonical momentum vector along elliptical spatial loops - akin to a Larmor-like precession of magnetic moment (total momentum in our case) around a magnetic field (canonical momentum). We probe this precession experimentally using the single trapped LC particles - with the direction of precession determined by the helicity of the input light and the precession frequency varying linearly with the laser power. We evaluated whether integration of expert guidance on seizure onset zone (SOZ) identification from resting state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) connectomics combined with deep learning (DL) techniques enhances the SOZ delineation in patients with refractory epilepsy (RE), compared to utilizing DL alone. Rs-fMRI were collected from 52 children with RE who had subsequently undergone ic-EEG and then, if indicated, surgery for seizure control (n = 25). The resting state functional connectomics data were previously independently classified by two expert epileptologists, as indicative of measurement noise, typical resting state network connectivity, or SOZ. An expert knowledge integrated deep network was trained on functional connectomics data to identify SOZ. Expert knowledge integrated with DL showed a SOZ localization accuracy of 84.8& and F1 score, harmonic mean of positive predictive value and sensitivity, of 91.7%. Conversely, a DL only model yielded an accuracy of less than 50% (F1 score 63%). Activations that initiate in gray matter, extend through white matter and end in vascular regions are seen as the most discriminative expert identified SOZ characteristics. Integration of expert knowledge of functional connectomics can not only enhance the performance of DL in localizing SOZ in RE, but also lead toward potentially useful explanations of prevalent co-activation patterns in SOZ. Perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) corrections and color superconductivity predict that strongly interacting matter can reveal new physical phenomena under extreme conditions. Taking into account these interaction effects, we investigate the role of anisotropic pressure in quark stars composed of interacting quark matter. Adopting two physically well-motivated anisotropy profiles, we numerically solve the stellar structure equations in order to explore the consequences of anisotropic pressure on various macroscopic properties such as radius, gravitational mass, surface redshift, moment of inertia, tidal Love number and oscillation spectrum. Remarkably, for both anisotropy models, negative anisotropies increase the radial stability of interacting quark stars, while the opposite occurs for positive anisotropies. However, for the Bowers-Liang profile, the central density corresponding to the maximum-mass point does not coincide with the central density where the squared oscillation frequency vanishes, indicating that the existence of stable anisotropic interacting quark stars is possible beyond the maximum mass for negative anisotropies. Additionally, we compare our theoretical predictions with several observational mass-radius measurements and tidal deformability constraints, which suggest that both strong interaction effects and anisotropy effects play a crucial role in describing compact stars observed in the Universe., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures and 1 table. We present a stable model for quark stars in Rastall-Rainbow (R-R) gravity. The structure of this configuration is obtained by utilizing an interacting quark matter equation of state. The R-R gravity theory is developed as a combination of two distinct theories, namely, the Rastall theory and the gravity's rainbow formalism. Depending on the model parameters ($\bar{\lambda}, \eta, \Sigma$), the mass-radius relations are numerically computed for modified Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations with proper boundary conditions. The stability of equilibrium configuration has been checked through the static stability criterion, adiabatic index and the sound velocity. In this present article, we explore the physical properties and characteristics of static, spherically symmetric wormholes in the background of Rastall-Rainbow gravity. The Rastall-Rainbow gravity theory has recently been proposed as a combination of two theories, namely, the Rastall theory and the Rainbow description. We implemented noncommutativity by adopting two different distributions of energy density (Gaussian and Lorentzian) in the Morris and Thorne metric. We solve the field equations analytically and discuss all the properties of wormholes depending on the two model parameters. In recent years, non-Hermitian phases in classical and quantum systems have garnered significant attention. In particular, their intriguing band geometry offers a platform for exploring unique topological states and unconventional quantum dynamics. However, their topological characterization becomes particularly interesting and challenging in complex multiband systems. Here we propose a decimation framework, which leverages real space renormalization group to streamline the analysis of complex multiband non-Hermitian systems. Our systematic approach allows us to probe different phases and transitions, analyze bulk-boundary correspondence, formulate generalized Brillouin zones, investigate open boundary spectra, survey non-Bloch van Hove singularities, study disorder-induced effects, and explore tunable non-Hermitian flat band physics. Additionally, our framework allows proposing a hypothesis about quasi-one-dimensional bipartite non-Hermitian systems with flat bands, demonstrating their decoupling into Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chains and compact localized states across various models. Our work presents a powerful and comprehensive framework for understanding the intricate properties of non-Hermitian multiband systems, offering insights into the evolving landscape of non-Hermitian topological physics., Comment: Comments are welcome!

The adaptation capability to a wide range of domains is crucial for scene text spotting models when deployed to real-world conditions. However, existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) approaches usually incorporate scene text detection and recognition simply by pretraining on natural scene text datasets, which do not directly exploit the intermediate feature representations between multiple domains. Here, we investigate the problem of domain-adaptive scene text spotting, i.e., training a model on multi-domain source data such that it can directly adapt to target domains rather than being specialized for a specific domain or scenario. Further, we investigate a transformer baseline called Swin-TESTR to focus on solving scene-text spotting for both regular and arbitrary-shaped scene text along with an exhaustive evaluation. We propose a non-Hermitian (NH) interface system formed between two NH nodal line semimetals driven by optical fields as a platform for generation and tailoring of higher-order van Hove singularities (VHS). Through an analytical analysis of the density of states (DOS), we find VHS with logarithmic divergences in the Hermitian limit. Upon introducing NH terms, four exceptional rings on two sides of the Fermi line are formed. By tuning the NH parameters and the light amplitude, we find a situation when one exceptional ring crosses the Fermi line, where a saddle point appears and results in a paired VHS around the origin. In contrast, when an exceptional contour resides at the Fermi energy, the saddle points critically get destroyed and we obtain a single peak in the DOS, with power-law divergences. These higher-order divergences that appear in an NH system have a different origin than that of the higher-order VHS in Hermitian systems, where no saddle point merging is noted. Non-linearities in simulation arise from the time variance in wireless mobile networks when integrated with human in the loop, human in the plant (HIL-HIP) physical systems under dynamic contexts, leading to simulation slowdown. Time variance is handled by deriving a series of piece wise linear time invariant simulations (PLIS) in intervals, which are then concatenated in time domain. In this paper, we conduct a formal analysis of the impact of discretizing time-varying components in wireless network-controlled HIL-HIP systems on simulation accuracy and speedup, and evaluate trade-offs with reliable guarantees. We develop an accurate simulation framework for an artificial pancreas wireless network system that controls blood glucose in Type 1 Diabetes patients with time varying properties such as physiological changes associated with psychological stress and meal patterns. In this paper, we investigate the existence of asymptotically flat wormhole geometries within the framework of Rastall-Rainbow modified gravity, a synthesis of two distinct theoretical models: Rastall theory and the Rainbow description. Our study uncovers that, when considering specific combinations of free parameters and equations of state, the emergence of static and spherically symmetric wormholes is not feasible within a zero-tidal-force context. Unknown-unknowns are operational scenarios in systems that are not accounted for in the design and test phase. In such scenarios, the operational behavior of the Human-in-loop (HIL) Human-in-Plant (HIP) systems is not guaranteed to meet requirements such as safety and efficacy. We propose a novel framework for analyzing the operational output characteristics of safety-critical HIL-HIP systems that can discover unknown-unknown scenarios and evaluate potential safety hazards. We propose dynamics-induced hybrid recurrent neural networks (DiH-RNN) to mine a physics-guided surrogate model (PGSM) that checks for deviation of the cyber-physical system (CPS) from safety-certified operational characteristics. The PGSM enables early detection of unknown-unknowns based on the physical laws governing the system. We demonstrate the detection of operational changes in an Artificial Pancreas(AP) due to unknown insulin cartridge errors.

Within the context of energy-momentum squared gravity (EMSG), where non-linear matter contributions appear in the gravitational action, we derive the modified TOV equations describing the hydrostatic equilibrium of charged compact stars. We adopt two different choices for the matter Lagrangian density ($\mathcal{L}_m= p$ versus $\mathcal{L}_m= -\rho$) and investigate the impact of each one on stellar structure. Furthermore, considering a charge profile where the electric charge density $\rho_{\rm ch}$ is proportional to the standard energy density $\rho$, we solve numerically the stellar structure equations in order to obtain the mass-radius diagrams for the MIT bag model equation of state (EoS). For $\mathcal{L}_m= p$ and given a specific value of $\beta$ (including the uncharged case when $\beta= 0$), the maximum-mass values increase (decrease) substantially as the gravity model parameter $\alpha$ becomes more negative (positive). However, for uncharged configurations and considering $\mathcal{L}_m= -\rho$, our numerical results reveal that when we increase $\alpha$ (from a negative value) the maximum mass first increases and after reaching a maximum value it starts to decrease. Remarkably, this makes it a less trivial behavior than that caused by the first choice when we take into account the presence of electric charge ($\beta \neq 0$)., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. We provide direct evidence of the effects of interface engineering of various substrates by Microbubble lithography (MBL). We choose a model organic plastic (or polymer) poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), with conductivity of 140 S/cm, as a representative organic system to showcase our technique. Thus, we fabricate permanent patterns of PEDOT:PSS on glass, followed by a flexible PDMS substrate, and observe conductivity enhancement of 5 times on the former (694 S/cm), and 20 times (2844 S/cm) on the latter, without the use of external doping agents or invasive chemical treatment. Probing the patterned interface, we observe that MBL is able to tune the conformational states of PEDOT:PSS from coils in the pristine form, to extended coils on glass, and almost linear structures in PDMS due to its more malleable liquid-like interface. This results in higher ordering and vanishing grain boundaries leading to the highest conductivity of PEDOT:PSS on PDMS substrates.

The union of topology and non-Hermiticity has led to the unveiling of many intriguing phenomena. We introduce a synthetic spin-engineered model belonging to symmetry class AI, which is a rare occurrence, and demonstrate the emergence of a multi-fold spectral topology. As an example of our proposal, we engineer non-Hermiticity in the paradigmatic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model by introducing a generalized synthetic spin, leading to an emergent two-fold spectral topology that governs the decoupled behaviour of the corresponding non-Hermitian skin effect. As a consequence of the spin choice, our model exhibits a rich phase diagram consisting of distinct topological phases, which we characterize by introducing the notion of paired winding numbers, which, in turn, predict the direction of skin localization under open boundaries. We demonstrate that the choice of spin parameters enables control over the directionality of the skin effect, allowing for it to be unilateral or bilateral. Furthermore, we discover non-dispersive flat bands emerging within the inherent SSH model framework, arising from the spin-engineering approach. We also introduce a simplified toy model to capture the underlying physics of the emergent flat bands and direction-selective skin effect. As an illustration of experimental feasibility, we present a topoelectric circuit that faithfully emulates the underlying spin-engineered Hamiltonian, providing a viable platform for realizing our predicted effects. Knowledge transfer across sensing technology is a novel concept that has been recently explored in many application domains, including gesture-based human computer interaction. The main aim is to gather semantic or data driven information from a source technology to classify / recognize instances of unseen classes in the target technology. The primary challenge is the significant difference in dimensionality and distribution of feature sets between the source and the target technologies. In this paper, we propose TRANSFER, a generic framework for knowledge transfer between a source and a target technology. TRANSFER uses a language-based representation of a hand gesture, which captures a temporal combination of concepts such as handshape, location, and movement that are semantically related to the meaning of a word. By utilizing a pre-specified syntactic structure and tokenizer, TRANSFER segments a hand gesture into tokens and identifies individual components using a token recognizer. The tokenizer in this language-based recognition system abstracts the low-level technology-specific characteristics to the machine interface, enabling the design of a discriminator that learns technology-invariant features essential for recognition of gestures in both source and target technologies. We demonstrate the usage of TRANSFER for three different scenarios: a) transferring knowledge across technology by learning gesture models from video and recognizing gestures using WiFi, b) transferring knowledge from video to accelerometer, and d) transferring knowledge from accelerometer to WiFi signals.

Surgical disconnection of Seizure Onset Zones (SOZs) at an early age is an effective treatment for Pharmaco-Resistant Epilepsy (PRE). Pre-surgical localization of SOZs with intra-cranial EEG (iEEG) requires safe and effective depth electrode placement. Resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (rs-fMRI) combined with signal decoupling using independent component (IC) analysis has shown promising SOZ localization capability that guides iEEG lead placement. However, SOZ ICs identification requires manual expert sorting of 100s of ICs per patient by the surgical team which limits the reproducibility and availability of this pre-surgical screening. Automated approaches for SOZ IC identification using rs-fMRI may use deep learning (DL) that encodes intricacies of brain networks from scarcely available pediatric data but has low precision, or shallow learning (SL) expert rule-based inference approaches that are incapable of encoding the full spectrum of spatial features. This paper proposes DeepXSOZ that exploits the synergy between DL based spatial feature and SL based expert knowledge encoding to overcome performance drawbacks of these strategies applied in isolation. DeepXSOZ is an expert-in-the-loop IC sorting technique that a) can be configured to either significantly reduce expert sorting workload or operate with high sensitivity based on expertise of the surgical team and b) can potentially enable the usage of rs-fMRI as a low cost outpatient pre-surgical screening tool. Comparison with state-of-art on 52 children with PRE shows that DeepXSOZ achieves sensitivity of 89.79%, precision of 93.6% and accuracy of 84.6%, and reduces sorting effort by 6.7-fold. Gestures that share similarities in their forms and are related in their meanings, should be easier for learners to recognize and incorporate into their existing lexicon. In that regard, to be more readily accepted as standard by the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, technical gestures in American Sign Language (ASL) will optimally share similar in forms with their lexical neighbors. We utilize a lexical database of ASL, ASL-LEX, to identify lexical relations within a set of technical gestures. We use automated identification for 3 unique sub-lexical properties in ASL- location, handshape and movement. EdGCon assigned an iconicity rating based on the lexical property similarities of the new gesture with an existing set of technical gestures and the relatedness of the meaning of the new technical word to that of the existing set of technical words. We collected 30 ad hoc crowdsourced technical gestures from different internet websites and tested them against 31 gestures from the DeafTEC technical corpus. We explore the existence of wormholes in the context of $f(R,T)$ gravity. The $f(R,T)$ theory is a curvature-matter coupled modified gravity that depends on an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar $R$ and the trace of the stress-energy tensor $T$. In this work, we adopt two different choices for the matter Lagrangian density ($\mathcal{L}_m= \mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{L}_m= p_r$) and investigate the impact of each one on wormhole structure. By adequately specifying the redshift function and the shape function, we found a variety of exact wormhole solutions in the theory. Our finding indicates that, for both classes of wormholes the energy density is always positive throughout the spacetime, while the radial pressure is negative. Instance-level segmentation of documents consists in assigning a class-aware and instance-aware label to each pixel of the image. It is a key step in document parsing for their understanding. In this paper, we present a unified transformer encoder-decoder architecture for en-to-end instance segmentation of complex layouts in document images. The method adapts a contrastive training with a mixed query selection for anchor initialization in the decoder. Later on, it performs a dot product between the obtained query embeddings and the pixel embedding map (coming from the encoder) for semantic reasoning. Extensive experimentation on competitive benchmarks like PubLayNet, PRIMA, Historical Japanese (HJ), and TableBank demonstrate that our model with SwinL backbone achieves better segmentation performance than the existing state-of-the-art approaches with the average precision of \textbf{93.72}, \textbf{54.39}, \textbf{84.65} and \textbf{98.04} respectively under one billion parameters. Document layout analysis is a known problem to the documents research community and has been vastly explored yielding a multitude of solutions ranging from text mining, and recognition to graph-based representation, visual feature extraction, etc. However, most of the existing works have ignored the crucial fact regarding the scarcity of labeled data. With growing internet connectivity to personal life, an enormous amount of documents had been available in the public domain and thus making data annotation a tedious task. We address this challenge using self-supervision and unlike, the few existing self-supervised document segmentation approaches which use text mining and textual labels, we use a complete vision-based approach in pre-training without any ground-truth label or its derivative. Instead, we generate pseudo-layouts from the document images to pre-train an image encoder to learn the document object representation and localization in a self-supervised framework before fine-tuning it with an object detection model. We show that our pipeline sets a new benchmark in this context and performs at par with the existing methods and the supervised counterparts, if not outperforms. In recent years, non-Hermitian (NH) topological semimetals have garnered significant attention due to their unconventional properties. In this work, we explore the transport properties of a three-dimensional dissipative Weyl semi-metal formed as a result of the stacking of two-dimensional Chern insulators. We find that unlike Hermitian systems where the Hall conductance is quantized, in presence of non-Hermiticity, the quantized Hall conductance starts to deviate from its usual nature. We show that the non-quantized nature of the Hall conductance in such NH topological systems is intimately connected to the presence of exceptional points (EPs). We find that in the case of open boundary conditions, the transition from a topologically trivial regime to a non-trivial topological regime takes place at a different value of the momentum than that of the periodic boundary spectra. This discrepancy is solved by considering the non-Bloch case and the generalized Brillouin zone (GBZ). Finally, we present the Hall conductance evaluated over the GBZ and connect it to the separation between the Weyl nodes, within the non-Bloch theory., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

The interaction of light beams with resonant structures has led to the development of various optical platforms for sensing, particle manipulation, and strong light-matter interaction. In the current study, we investigate the manifestations of the bound states in continuum (BIC) on the in plane and out of plane shifts (referred to as Goos-Hanchen (GH) and Imbert-Fedorov (IF) shifts, respectively) of a finite beam with specific polarization incident at an arbitrary angle. Based on the angular spectrum decomposition, we develop a generic formalism for understanding the interaction of the finite beam with an arbitrary stratified medium with isotropic and homogeneous components. it is applied to the case of a Gaussian beam with p and circularly polarized light incident on a symmetric structure containing two polar dielectric layers separated by a spacer layer. For p-polarized plane wave incidence one of the coupled Berreman modes of the structure was recently shown to evolve to the bound state with infinite localization and diverging quality factor coexisting with the other mode with large radiation leakage (Remesh et al. Optics Communications, 498:127223, 2021). A small deviation from the ideal BIC resonance still offers resonances with very high quality factors and these are exploited in this study to report giant GH shifts. A notable enhancement in the IF shift for circularly polarized light is also shown. Moreover, the reflected beam is shown to undergo distortion leading to a satellite spot. The origin of such a splitting of the reflected beam is traced to a destructive interference due to the left and right halves of the corresponding spectra.

The spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of light generated by tight focusing in optical tweezers has been regularly employed in generating angular momentum - both spin and orbital - in trapped mesoscopic particles. Specifically, the transverse spin angular momentum (TSAM), which arises due to the longitudinal component of the electromagnetic field generated by tight focusing, is of special interest, both in terms of fundamental studies and associated applications. We provide an effective and optimal strategy for generating TSAM in optical tweezers by tightly focusing radially and azimuthally polarized first-order Laguerre Gaussian beams with no intrinsic angular momentum, into a refractive index stratified medium. Our choice of such input fields ensures that the longitudinal spin angular momentum (LSAM) arising from the electric (magnetic) field for the radial (azimuthal) component is zero, which leads to the separate and exclusive effects of the electric and magnetic TSAM in the case of input radially and azimuthally polarized beams on single birefringent particles. We also observe the emergence of origin-dependent intrinsic orbital angular momentum causing the rotation of birefringent particles around the beam axis for both input beam types, which opens up new and simple avenues for exotic and complex particle manipulation in optical tweezers., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Active fluctuations are known to play a significant role in the intracellular transport of passive objects. However, the effect of viscoelasticity of the environment in shaping such processes is relatively less understood. Here, with a minimal experiment using a driven colloid in a viscoelastic bath, we show that viscoelasticity significantly increases the mean injected power to the passive object ($\sim 50\%$ compared to a viscous medium), for the same strength of the external driving. Additionally, we observe a notable reduction in negative work fluctuations across a wide range of driving amplitudes. These findings collectively suggest an enhanced directionality in driven processes within a viscoelastic bath, which we attribute to the emergence of interactions between the colloid and the viscoelastic medium., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures (Accepted for publication in New Journal of Physics)

Non-Hermitian systems have been widely explored in platforms ranging from photonics to electric circuits. A defining feature of non-Hermitian systems is exceptional points (EPs), where both eigenvalues and eigenvectors coalesce. Tropical geometry is an emerging field of mathematics at the interface between algebraic geometry and polyhedral geometry, with diverse applications to science. Here, we introduce and develop a unified tropical geometric framework to characterize different facets of non-Hermitian systems. We illustrate the versatility of our approach using several examples, and demonstrate that it can be used to select from a spectrum of higher-order EPs in gain and loss models, predict the skin effect in the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, and extract universal properties in the presence of disorder in the Hatano-Nelson model. Photophoretic forces - which are of thermal origin - have defined an alternative route of optical trapping of absorbing microparticles in air. Here, we show that a single multi-mode fiber facilitates significantly more robust optical traps compared to a pure Gaussian beam emanating from a single mode fiber for the trapping and manipulation of absorbing particles using photophoretic forces. We carefully study the dependency of trapping on speckle patterns generated from different modes from a multimode fiber, and experimentally observe that maximum trapping force can be obtained when the mean speckle size is comparable to the diameter of a trapped particle. We explain this observation by numerical simulations carried out to calculate the photophoretic force, and also determine stable trapping conditions from force balance equations. Interestingly, we also observe large oscillations of the trapped particle along the z-direction for multimode beams, which may be demonstrative of an effective restoring force for photophoretic trapping even in the axial direction. Our work may presage a new route for exciting applications on optical trapping and spectroscopy with photophoretic forces due to the inherent ease-of-use, portability, and flexibility of single muti-mode fiber based optical traps., Comment: 34 pages, 11 figures

The synergy between non-Hermitian concepts and topological ideas have led to very fruitful activity in the recent years. Their interplay has resulted in a wide variety of new non-Hermitian topological phenomena being discovered. In this review, we present the key principles underpinning the topological features of non-Hermitian phases. Using paradigmatic models -- Hatano-Helson, non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger and non-Hermitian Chern insulator -- we illustrate the central features of non-Hermitian topological systems, including exceptional points, complex energy gaps and non-Hermitian symmetry classification. We discuss the non-Hermitian skin effect and the notion of the generalized Brillouin zone, which allows restoring the bulk-boundary correspondence. Using concrete examples, we examine the role of disorder, present the linear response framework, and analyze the Hall transport properties of non-Hermitian topological systems. We also survey the rapidly growing experimental advances in this field. Quark stars are terrestrial laboratories to study fundamental physics at ultrahigh densities and temperatures. In this work, we investigate the internal structure and the physical properties of quark stars (QSs) in the Rastall gravity. Rastall gravity is considered a non-conservative theory of gravity, which is an effective gravity theory at high energy density, e.g., relevant to the early universe and dense, compact objects. We derive the hydrostatic equilibrium structure for QSs with the inclusion of anisotropic pressure. More specifically, we find the QS mass-radius relations for the MIT bag model. Recent advances in nuclear theory combined with new astrophysical observations have led to the need for specific theoretical models that actually apply to phenomena on dense-matter physics. At the same time, quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts the existence of non-nucleonic degrees of freedom at high densities in neutron-star matter, such as quark matter. Within a confining quark matter model, which consists of homogeneous, neutral 3-flavor interacting quark matter with $\mathcal{O}(m_s^4)$ corrections, we study the structure of compact stars made of a charged perfect fluid in the context of $f(R,T)$ gravity. The system of differential equations that describe the structure of charged compact stars have been derived and solved numerically for a gravity model with $f(R,T)= R+ 2\beta T$. For simplicity, we assume that the charge density is proportional to the energy density, namely, $\rho_{\rm ch} = \alpha \rho$. We study the structure of quark stars (QSs) adopting homogeneously confined matter inside the star with a 3-flavor neutral charge and a fixed strange quark mass $m_s$. We explore the internal structure, and the physical properties of specific classes of QSs in the recently proposed energy-momentum squared gravity (EMSG). Also, we obtain the mass-radius $(M-R)$ and mass-central energy density $(M-\rho_c)$ relations for QS using the QCD motivated EoS. The maximum mass for QSs in EMSG is investigated depending on the presence and absence of the free parameter $\alpha$. Furthermore, the stability of stars is determined by the condition $\frac{d M}{d \rho_c}>0$. Manifestations of orbital angular momentum induced effects in the diffraction of a radially polarized vector beam by an off-axis tilted aperture are studied both experimentally and theoretically. Experiments were carried out to extract the degree of circular polarization, which was shown to be proportional to the on-axis component of the spin angular momentum density. We report a clear separation of the regions of dominance of the right and left circular polarizations associated with positive and negative topological charges respectively, which is reminiscent of the standard vortex-induced transverse shift, albeit in the diffraction scenario. The experimental results are supported by model simulations and the agreement is quite satisfactory. The results are useful to appreciate the orbit-orbit related effects due to unavoidable misalignment problems (especially for vortex beams).

We develop a novel hyperspectral imaging system using structured illumination in an SLM-based Michelson interferometer. In our design, we use a reflective SLM as a mirror in one of the arms of a Michelson interferometer, and scan the interferometer by varying the phase across the SLM display. For achieving the latter, we apply a checkerboard phase mask on the SLM display where the gray value varies between 0-255, thereby imparting a dynamic phase of up to 262{\deg} to the incident light beam. We couple a supercontinuum source into the interferometer in order to mimic an astronomical object such as the Sun, and choose a central wavelength of 637.4 nm akin to the strong emission line of Fe X present in the solar spectrum. We use a bandwidth of 30 nm, and extract fringes corresponding to a spectral resolution of 3.8 nm which is limited by the reflectivity of the SLM. We also demonstrate a maximum wavelength tunability of ~8 nm by varying the phase over the phase mask with a spectral sampling of around 0.03 nm between intermediate fringes. The checkerboard phase mask can be adapted close to real time on time-scales of a few tens of milliseconds to obtain spectral information for other near-contiguous wavelengths. The compactness, potential low cost, low power requirements, real-time tunability and lack of moving mechanical parts in the setup implies that it can have very useful applications in settings which require near real-time, multi-wavelength spectroscopic applications, and is especially relevant in space astronomy., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Optics Express
