Using the time-of-flight technique, we measured the beta-delayed neutron emission of $^{132}$Cd. From our large-scale shell model (LSSM) calculation using the N$^3$LO interaction [Z.Y. Xu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 022501 (2023)], we suggest the decay is dominated by the transformation of a neutron in the $g_{7/2}$ orbital, deep below the Fermi surface, into a proton in the $g_{9/2}$ orbital. We compare the beta-decay half-lives and neutron branching ratios of nuclei with $Z<50$ and $N\geq82$ obtained with our LSSM with those of leading "global" models. Our calculations match known half-lives and neutron branching ratios well and suggest that current leading models overestimate the yet-to-be-measured half-lives. Our model, backed by the $^{132}$Cd decay data presented here, offers robust predictive power for nuclei of astrophysical interest such as $r$-process waiting points., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The Zirconium (Z = 40) isotopic chain has attracted interest for more than four decades. The abrupt lowering of the energy of the first $2^+$ state and the increase in the transition strength B(E2; $2_1^\rightarrow 0_1^+$ going from $^{98}$Zr to $^{100}$Zr has been the first example of "quantum phase transition" in nuclear shapes, which has few equivalents in the nuclear chart. Although a multitude of experiments have been performed to measure nuclear properties related to nuclear shapes and collectivity in the region, none of the measured lifetimes were obtained using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method in the $\gamma\gamma$-coincidence mode where a gate on the direct feeding transition of the state of interest allows a strict control of systematical errors. This work reports the results of lifetime measurements for the first yrast excited states in $^{98-104}$Zr carried out to extract reduced transition probabilities. The new lifetime values in $\gamma\gamma$-coincidence and $\gamma$-single mode are compared with the results of former experiments. Recent predictions of the Interacting Boson Model with Configuration Mixing, the Symmetry Conserving Configuration Mixing model based on the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach and the Monte Carlo Shell Model are presented and compared with the experimental data.

We present the first measurement of the $^{47}$K($d,p\gamma$)$^{48}$K transfer reaction, performed in inverse kinematics using a reaccelerated beam of $^{47}$K. The level scheme of $^{48}$K has been greatly extended with nine new bound excited states identified and spectroscopic factors deduced. Detailed comparisons with SDPF-U and SDPF-MU shell-model calculations reveal a number of discrepancies with these results, and a preference for SDPF-MU is found. Intriguingly, an apparent systematic overestimation of spectroscopic factors and a poor reproduction of the energies for 1$^-$ states suggests that the mixing between the $\pi s^{\,\,\,1}_{1/2} d^{\,\,\,4}_{3/2}$ and $\pi s^{\,\,\,2}_{1/2} d^{\,\,\,3}_{3/2}$ proton configurations in $^{48}$K is not correctly described using current interactions, challenging our descriptions of light $N=28$ nuclei., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Low-lying states of $^{94}$Zr were investigated via low-energy multi-step Coulomb excitation. From the measured $\gamma$-ray yields, 13 reduced transition probabilities between low-spin states were determined, together with the spectroscopic quadrupole moments of the $2_{1,2}^+$ states. Based on this information, for the first time in the Zr isotopic chain, the shapes of the $0_{1,2}^+$ states including their deformation softness were inferred in a model-independent way using the quadrupole sum rules approach. The ground state of $^{94}$Zr possesses a rather diffuse shape associated with a spherical configuration, while the $0_2^+$ state is oblate and more strongly deformed. The observed features of shape coexistence in $^{94}$Zr are in agreement with Monte-Carlo shell-model predictions, and the present results are vital to refine the IBM-CM description of the Zr isotopes around $A\approx 100$ in terms of an intertwined quantum phase transition., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Polonium isotopes having two protons above the shell closure at $Z=82$ show a wide variety of low-lying high-spin isomeric states across the whole chain. The structure of neutron-deficient isotopes up to $^{210}$Po ($N=126$) is well established as they are easily produced through various methods. However, there is not much information available for the neutron-rich counterparts for which only selective techniques can be used for their production. We report on the first fast-timing measurements of yrast states up to the 8$^+$ level in $^{214,216,218}$Po isotopes produced in the $\beta^-$ decay of $^{214,216,218}$Bi at ISOLDE, CERN. In particular, our new half-life value of 607(14) ps for the 8$_1^+$ state in $^{214}$Po is nearly 20 times shorter than the one available in literature and comparable with the newly measured half-lives of 409(16) and 628(25) ps for the corresponding 8$_1^+$ states in $^{216,218}$Po, respectively. The measured $B(E2;8_1^+ \to 6_1^+)$ transition probability values follow an increasing trend relative to isotope mass, reaching a maximum for $^{216}$Po. The increase contradicts the previous claims of isomerism for the $8^+$ yrast states in neutron-rich $^{214}$Po and beyond. Together with the other measured yrast transitions, the $B(E2)$ values provide a crucial test of the different theoretical approaches describing the underlying configurations of the yrast band. The new experimental results are compared to shell-model calculations using the KHPE and H208 effective interactions and their pairing modified versions, showing an increase in configuration mixing when moving towards the heavier isotopes., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures (main manuscript), 2 pages (supplemental material)

The Gamow-Teller strength distribution covering the entire $\beta$-decay window, up to 10.312(4) MeV, of $^{80g+m}$Ga was measured for the first time in photo-fission of UC$_x$ induced by 50 MeV electron beam. The new data show significant enhancement in the high-energy region with a jump-structure. Simultaneously, the $\gamma$ de-exciting behavior of $\beta$-populated states presents a competition between de-excitation to 2$_1^+$ [$\beta_2$ = 0.155(9)] and to 2$_2^+$ [$\beta_2$ = 0.053$_{0.009}^{0.008}$)] in $^{80}$Ge. Based on these facts and combined with a realistic shell model calculation and systematic analysis of logft ratio between precursor $\beta$-decay to 2$_2^+$ and to 2$_1^+$ of Ga isotopes, we conclude that these phenomena evidence simultaneous impacts of nuclear shell structure and collectivity on B(GT) and its distribution and, therefore, the half-life of the precursor. These data prove that the nucleus as a multi-nucleon correlated quantum system reacts as a whole when $\beta$-decay occurs in contrast to simple single-particle excitation. Additionally, the comparison with the theoretical results evidence how challenging is the description of the experimental data obtained, and render this experimental outcome a sound test for the theoretical models.

The excited states of unstable $^{20}$O were investigated via $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy following the $^{19}$O$(d,p)^{20}$O reaction at 8 $A$MeV. By exploiting the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method, the lifetime of the 2$^+_2$ and 3$^+_1$ states were firmly established. From the $\gamma$-ray branching and E2/M1 mixing ratios for transitions deexciting the 2$^+_2$ and 3$^+_1$ states, the B(E2) and B(M1) were determined. Various chiral effective field theory Hamiltonians, describing the nuclear properties beyond ground states, along with a standard USDB interaction, were compared with the experimentally obtained data. Such a comparison for a large set of $\gamma$-ray transition probabilities with the valence space in medium similarity renormalization group ab-initio calculations was performed for the first time in a nucleus far from stability. It was shown that the ab-initio approaches using chiral EFT forces are challenged by detailed high-precision spectroscopic properties of nuclei. Classical novae are thermonuclear explosions in stellar binary systems, and important sources of $^{26}$Al and $^{22}$Na. While gamma rays from the decay of the former radioisotope have been observed throughout the Galaxy, $^{22}$Na remains untraceable. The half-life of $^{22}$Na (2.6 yr) would allow the observation of its 1.275 MeV gamma-ray line from a cosmic source. However, the prediction of such an observation requires good knowledge of the nuclear reactions involved in the production and destruction of this nucleus. The $^{22}$Na($p,\gamma$)$^{23}$Mg reaction remains the only source of large uncertainty about the amount of $^{22}$Na ejected. Its rate is dominated by a single resonance on the short-lived state at 7785.0(7) keV in $^{23}$Mg. In the present work, a combined analysis of particle-particle correlations and velocity-difference profiles is proposed to measure femtosecond nuclear lifetimes. The application of this novel method to the study of the $^{23}$Mg states, combining magnetic and highly-segmented tracking gamma-ray spectrometers, places strong limits on the amount of $^{22}$Na produced in novae, explains its non-observation to date in gamma rays (flux < 2.5x$10^{-4}$ ph/(cm$^2$s)), and constrains its detectability with future space-borne observatories., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

The structure of 106Pd, populated in the EC/beta+ decay of 106Ag, was investigated at the INFN Legnaro National Laboratories using the Spes Low-energy Internal Conversion Electron Spectrometer (SLICES). The K-internal conversion coefficients of some transitions have been measured and the electric monopole transition strengths, between low-lying 2+ and 0+ states, have been deduced. These experimental data combined with the results from internal conversion electron measurement on 104Pd previously performed by the Florence spectroscopy group were compared with the theoretical values calculated in the framework of the interacting proton-neutron boson model. Good agreement between experimental and theoretical values is found when interpreting the 0+3 level as an intruder state.

The structure of the unbound $^{15}$F nucleus is investigated using the inverse kinematics resonant scattering of a radioactive $^{14}$O beam impinging on a CH$_2$ target. The analysis of $^{1}$H($^{14}$O,p)$^{14}$O and $^{1}$H($^{14}$O,2p)$^{13}$N reactions allowed the confirmation of the previously observed narrow $1/2^{-}$ resonance, near the two-proton decay threshold, and the identification of two new narrow 5/2$^{-}$ and 3/2$^{-}$ resonances. The newly observed levels decay by 1p emission to the ground of $^{14}$O, and by sequential 2p emission to the ground state (g.s.) of $^{13}$N via the $1^-$ resonance of $^{14}$O. Gamow shell model (GSM) analysis of the experimental data suggests that the wave functions of the 5/2$^{-}$ and 3/2$^{-}$ resonances may be collectivized by the continuum coupling to nearby 2p- and 1p- decay channels. The observed excitation function $^{1}$H($^{14}$O,p)$^{14}$O and resonance spectrum in $^{15}$F are well reproduced in the unified framework of the GSM., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The low-lying excited states in the neutron-deficient $N=Z+1$ nucleus $^{87}_{43}$Tc$^{\ }_{44}$ have been studied via the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{54}$Fe($^{36}$Ar, $2n1p$)$^{87}$Tc at the Grand Acc\'el\'erateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL), France. The AGATA spectrometer was used in conjunction with the auxiliary NEDA, Neutron Wall, and DIAMANT detector arrays to measure coincident prompt $\gamma$-rays, neutrons, and charged particles emitted in the reaction. A level scheme of $^{87}$Tc from the (9/2$^{+}_{g.s.}$) state to the (33/2$^{+}_{1}$) state was established based on 6 mutually coincident $\gamma$-ray transitions. The constructed level structure exhibits a rotational behavior with a sharp backbending at $\hbar\omega\approx 0.50$ MeV. A decrease in alignment frequency and increase in alignment sharpness in the odd-mass isotonic chains around $N=44$ is proposed as an effect of the enhanced isoscalar neutron-proton interactions in odd-mass nuclei when approaching the $N=Z$ line.

This paper reviews recent literature results on the mechanics of structures formed by layers of pentamode lattices alternating with stiffening plates, which can be effectively employed for the development of seismic isolation devices and vibration attenuation tools, with nearly complete band gaps for shear waves. It is shown that such structures, named pentamode bearings, can respond either in the stretching-dominated regime, or in the bending-dominated regime, depending on the nature of the joints connecting the different members. Their response is characterized by high vertical stiffness and theoretically zero shear stiffness in the stretching dominated regime, or considerably low values of such a quantity in the bending dominated regime. Available results on the experimental response of 3d printed models to combined compression and shear loading highlight that the examined structures are able to exhibit energy dissipation capacity and effective damping that are suitable for seismic isolation devices. Their fabrication does not necessarily require heavy industry, and expensive materials, being possible with ordinary 3-D printers.

High-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy of 18N is performed with the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array AGATA, following deep-inelastic processes induced by an 18O beam on a 181Ta target. Six states are newly identified, which together with the three known excitations exhaust all negative-parity excited states expected in 18N below the neutron threshold. Spin and parities are proposed for all located states on the basis of decay branchings and comparison with large-scale shell-model calculations performed in the p-sd space, with the YSOX interaction. Of particular interest is the location of the 0^-_1 and 1^-_2 excitations, which provide strong constrains for cross-shell p-sd matrix elements based on realistic interactions, and help to simultaneously reproduce the ground and first-excited states in 16N and 18N, for the first time. Understanding the 18N structure may also have significant impact on neutron-capture cross-section calculations in r-process modeling including light neutron-rich nuclei.

The heaviest N=Z doubly-magic nucleus, $^{100}$Sn, and the neighboring nuclei offer unique opportunities to investigate the properties of nuclear interaction in extreme conditions. In particular, the Cd isotopes are expected to present features similar to those found in the Sn isotopic chain, since they have only two proton holes in the Z=50 shell. In this manuscript, the lifetime measurements of low-lying states in the even-mass $^{102-108}$Cd is presented. Thanks to the powerful detection capabilities of AGATA array and VAMOS++ spectrometer, the unusual employment of multi-nucleon transfer reactions permitted to investigate the first 2$^+$ and 4$^+$ states in all these nuclei, together with various deformed bands in $^{106}$Cd. The results were interpreted in the context of new state-of-the-art beyond-mean-field calculations, using the symmetry-conserving configuration-mixing approach. Despite the similarities in the electromagnetic properties of the low-lying states, there is a fundamental structural difference between the ground-state bands in the Z=48 and Z=50 isotopes. The comparison between experimental and theoretical results revealed a rotational character of the Cd nuclei, which have prolate-deformed ground states with $\beta_2 \approx 0.2$. At this deformation Z=48 becomes a closed-shell configuration, which is favored with respect to the spherical one., Comment: V1 : 14 pages, 12 figures. V2 : 16 pages, 11 figures. A novel Monte Carlo technique has been developed to determine lifetimes of excited states in the tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds range. The method is applied to low-energy heavy-ion binary reactions populating nuclei with complex velocity distributions. Its relevance is demonstrated in connection with the $^{18}$O(7.0 MeV/u) + $^{181}$Ta experiment, performed at GANIL with the AGATA+VAMOS+PARIS setup, to study neutron-rich O, C, N, ... nuclei. Excited states in $^{17}$O and $^{19}$O, with known lifetimes, are used to validate the method over the $\sim$20-400 fs lifetime-sensitivity range. Emphasis is given to the unprecedented position resolution provided by $\gamma$-tracking arrays, which turns out to be essential for reaching the required accuracy in Doppler-shift correction, at the basis of the detailed analysis of $\gamma$-ray lineshape and resulting state lifetime determination. The technique is anticipated to be an important tool for lifetime investigations in exotic neutron-rich nuclei, produced with intense ISOL-type beams.

We present recent results on the structure of the one-valence-particle $^{41}$Ca and $^{49}$Ca, and one-valence-hole $^{47}$Ca, nuclei. The isotopes of interest were populated via the cold-neutron capture reactions $^{40}$Ca(n,$\gamma$), $^{48}$Ca(n,$\gamma$) and $^{46}$Ca(n,$\gamma$), respectively. The experiments were performed at the Institut Laue-Langevin, within the EXILL campaign, which employed a large array of HPGe detectors. The $\gamma$ decay and level schemes of these nuclei were investigated by $\gamma$-ray coincidence relationships, leading to the identification of 41, 10, and 6 new transitions in $^{41}$Ca, $^{47}$Ca, and $^{49}$Ca, respectively. Branching ratios and intensities were extracted for the $\gamma$ decay from each state, and $\gamma$-ray angular correlations were performed to establish a number of transition multipolarities and mixing ratios, thus helping in the spin assignment of the states. The experimental findings are discussed along with microscopic, self-consistent beyond-mean-field calculations performed with the Hybrid Configuration Mixing model, based on a Skyrme SkX Hamiltonian. The latter suggests that a fraction of the low-spin states of the $^{41}$Ca, $^{49}$Ca, and $^{47}$Ca nuclei is characterized by the coexistence of either 2p-1h and 1p-2h excitations, or couplings between single-particle/hole degrees of freedom and collective vibrations (phonons) of the doubly-magic "core".

The neutron-rich $^{213}$Pb isotope was produced in the fragmentation of a primary 1 GeV $A$ $^{238}$U beam, separated in FRS in mass and atomic number, and then implanted for isomer decay $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy with the RISING setup at GSI. A newly observed isomer and its measured decay properties indicate that states in $^{213}$Pb are characterized by the seniority quantum number that counts the nucleons not in pairs coupled to angular momentum $J=0$. The conservation of seniority is a consequence of the Berry phase associated with particle-hole conjugation, which becomes gauge invariant and therefore observable in semi-magic nuclei where nucleons half-fill the valence shell. The $\gamma$-ray spectroscopic observables in $^{213}$Pb are thus found to be driven by two mechanisms, particle-hole conjugation and seniority conservation, which are intertwined through the Berry phase.

The structure of the doubly magic $^{132}_{50}$Sn$_{82}$ has been investigated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, populated both by the $\beta^-$decay of $^{132}$In and $\beta^-$-delayed neutron emission of $^{133}$In. The level scheme of $^{132}$Sn is greatly expanded with the addition of 68 $\gamma$-transitions and 17 levels observed for the first time in the $\beta$ decay. The information on the excited structure is completed by new $\gamma$-transitions and states populated in the $\beta$-n decay of $^{133}$In. Improved delayed neutron emission probabilities are obtained both for $^{132}$In and $^{133}$In. Level lifetimes are measured via the Advanced Time-Delayed $\beta\gamma\gamma$(t) fast-timing method. An interpretation of the level structure is given based on the experimental findings and the particle-hole configurations arising from core excitations both from the \textit{N} = 82 and \textit{Z} = 50 shells, leading to positive and negative parity particle-hole multiplets. To test the predictive power of ab initio nuclear structure theory, the lifetime of the second 2+ state in neutron-rich 20O, tau(2+_2 ) = 150(+80-30) fs, and an estimate for the lifetime of the second 2+ state in 16C have been obtained, for the first time. The results were achieved via a novel Monte Carlo technique that allowed us to measure nuclear state lifetimes in the tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds range, by analyzing the Doppler-shifted gamma-transition line shapes of products of low-energy transfer and deep-inelastic processes in the reaction 18O (7.0 MeV/u) + 181Ta. The requested sensitivity could only be reached owing to the excellent performances of the AGATA gamma-tracking array, coupled to the PARIS scintillator array and to the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. The experimental lifetimes agree with predictions of ab initio calculations using two- and three-nucleon interactions, obtained with the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group for 20O, and with the no-core shell model for 16C. The present measurement shows the power of electromagnetic observables, determined with high-precision gamma spectroscopy, to assess the quality of first-principles nuclear structure calculations, complementing common benchmarks based on nuclear energies. The proposed experimental approach will be essential for short lifetimes measurements in unexplored regions of the nuclear chart, including r-process nuclei, when intense ISOL-type beams become available.

Shape coexistence in the $Z \approx 82$ region has been established in mercury, lead and polonium isotopes. Even-even mercury isotopes with $100 \leq N \leq 106$ present multiple fingerprints of this phenomenon, which seems to be no longer present for $N \geq 110$. According to a number of theoretical calculations, shape coexistence is predicted in the $^{188}$Hg isotope. The $^{188}$Hg nucleus was populated using two different fusion-evaporation reactions with two targets, $^{158}$Gd and $^{160}$Gd, and a beam of $^{34}$S, provided by the Tandem-ALPI accelerators complex at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The channels of interest were selected using the information from the Neutron Wall array, while the $\gamma$ rays were detected using the GALILEO $\gamma$-ray array. The lifetimes of the excited states were determined using the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift method, employing the dedicated GALILEO plunger device. Using the two-bands mixing and rotational models, the deformation of the pure configurations was obtained from the experimental results. The extracted transition strengths were compared with those calculated with the state-of-the-art symmetry-conserving configuration-mixing (SCCM) and five-dimentional collective Hamiltonian (5DCH) approaches in order to shed light on the nature of the observed structures in the $^{188}$Hg nucleus. The neutron-rich $^{122-131}$Sb isotopes were produced as fission fragments in the reaction $^{9}$Be($^{238}$U,~f) with 6.2 MeV/u beam energy. An unique setup, consisting of AGATA, VAMOS++ and EXOGAM detectors, was used which enabled the prompt-delayed gamma-ray ($\gamma$) spectroscopy of fission fragments in the time range of 100 ns - 200 $\mu$s. New isomers, prompt and delayed transitions were established in the even-A $^{122-130}$Sb isotopes. In the odd-A $^{123-131}$Sb isotopes, new prompt and delayed $\gamma$-ray transitions were identified, in addition to the confirmation of the previously known isomers. The half-lives of the isomeric states and the $B(E2)$ transition probabilities of the observed transitions depopulating these isomers were extracted. The experimental data was compared with the theoretical results obtained in the framework of Large-Scale Shell-Model (LSSM) calculations in a restricted model space. Modifications of several components of the shell model interaction were introduced to obtain a consistent agreement with the excitation energies and the $B(E2)$ transition probabilities in neutron-rich Sn and Sb isotopes. The isomeric configurations in Sn and Sb were found to be relatively pure. Further, the calculations revealed that the presence of a single valence proton, mainly in the $g_{7/2}$ orbital in Sb isotopes, leads to significant mixing (due to the $\nu\pi$ interaction) of: (i) the neutron seniorities ($\upsilon_{\nu}$) and (ii) the neutron angular momentum ($I_{\nu}$). The above features have a weak impact on the excitation energies, but have an important impact on the $B(E2)$ transition probabilities. In addition, a constancy of the relative excitation energies irrespective of neutron seniority and neutron number in Sn and Sb was observed., Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures, 10 tables

The lifetimes of the low-lying excited states $2^+$ and $4^+$ have been directly measured in the neutron-deficient $^{106,108}$Sn isotopes. The nuclei were populated via a deep-inelastic reaction and the lifetime measurement was performed employing a differential plunger device. The emitted $\gamma$ rays were detected by the AGATA array, while the reaction products were uniquely identified by the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. Large-Scale Shell-Model calculations with realistic forces indicate that, independently of the pairing content of the interaction, the quadrupole force is dominant in the $B(E2; 2_1^+ \to 0_{g.s.}^+)$ values and it describes well the experimental pattern for $^{104-114}$Sn; the $B(E2; 4_1^+ \to 2_1^+)$ values, measured here for the first time, depend critically on a delicate pairing-quadrupole balance, disclosed by the very precise results in $^{108}$Sn. This result provides insight in the hitherto unexplained $B(E2; 4_1^+ \to 2_1^+)/B(E2; 2_1^+ \to 0_{g.s.}^+) < 1$ anomaly., Comment: V1: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, theoretical interpretation described in detail in the arXiv paper of A.P.Zuker (cross-reference) V2: added reference to A.P. Nuclear astrophysics, the union of nuclear physics and astronomy, went through an impressive expansion during the last twenty years. This could be achieved thanks to milestone improvements in astronomical observations, cross section measurements, powerful computer simulations and much refined stellar models. Italian groups are giving quite important contributions to every domain of nuclear astrophysics, sometimes being the leaders of worldwide unique experiments. The in-beam tests of two Si pixel type TRACE detectors have been performed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (Italy). The aim was to investigate the possibility of identifying heavy-ion reactions products with mass A~10 at low kinetic energy, i.e., around 10 MeV. Two separate read-out chains, digital and analog, were used. The Pulse Shape Analysis technique was employed to obtain the identification matrices for the digitally processed part of the data. Separation in both charge and mass was obtained, however, the $\alpha$ particles contaminated significantly the recorded data in the lower energy part. Due to this effect, the identification of the light products ($^{7,6}$Li isotopes) could be possible down only to ~20 MeV, Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The low-lying structures of the midshell $\nu g_{9/2}$ Ni isotopes $^{72}$Ni and $^{74}$Ni have been investigated at the RIBF facility in RIKEN within the EURICA collaboration. Previously unobserved low-lying states were accessed for the first time following $\beta$ decay of the mother nuclei $^{72}$Co and $^{74}$Co. As a result, we provide a complete picture in terms of the seniority scheme up to the first $(8^+)$ levels for both nuclei. The experimental results are compared to shell-model calculations in order to define to what extent the seniority quantum number is preserved in the first neutron $g_{9/2}$ shell. We find that the disappearance of the seniority isomerism in the $(8^+_1)$ states can be explained by a lowering of the seniority-four $(6^+)$ levels as predicted years ago. For $^{74}$Ni, the internal de-excitation pattern of the newly observed $(6^+_2)$ state supports a restoration of the normal seniority ordering up to spin $J=4$. This property, unexplained by the shell-model calculations, is in agreement with a dominance of the single-particle spherical regime near $^{78}$Ni.

The gamma-ray decay of excited states of the one-valence-proton nucleus 133Sb has been studied using cold-neutron induced fission of 235U and 241Pu targets, during the EXILL campaign at the ILL reactor in Grenoble. By using a highly efficient HPGe array, coincidences between gamma-rays prompt with the fission event and those delayed up to several tens of microseconds were investigated, allowing to observe, for the first time, high-spin excited states above the 16.6 micros isomer. Lifetimes analysis, performed by fast-timing techniques with LaBr3(Ce) scintillators, reveals a difference of almost two orders of magnitude in B(M1) strength for transitions between positive-parity medium-spin yrast states. The data are interpreted by a newly developed microscopic model which takes into account couplings between core excitations (both collective and non-collective) of the doubly magic nucleus 132Sn and the valence proton, using the Skyrme effective interaction in a consistent way. The results point to a fast change in the nature of particle-core excitations with increasing spin.

A study of fusion-evaporation and (partly) fusion-fission channels for the $^{88}$Mo compound nucleus, produced at different excitation energies in the reaction $^{48}$Ti + $^{40}$Ca at 300, 450 and 600 MeV beam energies, is presented. Fusion-evaporation and fusion-fission cross sections have been extracted and compared with the existing systematics. Experimental data concerning light charged particles have been compared with the prediction of the statistical model in its implementation in the Gemini++ code, well suited even for high spin systems, in order to tune the main model parameters in a mass region not abundantly covered by exclusive experimental data. Multiplicities for light charged particles emitted in fusion evaporation events are also presented. Some discrepancies with respect to the prediction of the statistical model have been found for forward emitted $\alpha$-particles; they may be due both to pre-equilibrium emission and to reaction channels (such as Deep Inelastic Collisions, QuasiFission/QuasiFusion) different from the compound nucleus formation., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. A theoretical approach was developed to describe secondary particle emission in heavy ion collisions, with special regards to pre-equilibrium {\alpha}-particle production. Griffin's model of non-equilibrium processes is used to account for the first stage of the compound system formation, while a Monte Carlo statistical approach was used to describe the further decay from a hot source at thermal equilibrium. The probabilities of neutron, proton and {\alpha}-particle emission have been evaluated for both the equilibrium and pre-equilibrium stages of the process. Fission and {\gamma}-ray emission competition were also considered after equilibration. Effects due the possible cluster structure of the projectile which has been excited during the collisions have been experimentally evidenced studying the double differential cross sections of p and {\alpha}-particles emitted in the E=250MeV 16O +116Sn reaction. The 48Ti on 40Ca reactions have been studied at 300 and 600 MeV focusing on the fusion-evaporation (FE) and fusion-fission (FF) exit channels. Energy spectra and multiplicities of the emitted light charged particles have been compared to Monte Carlo simulations based on the statistical model. Indeed, in this mass region (A about 100) models predict that shape transitions can occur at high spin values and relatively scarce data exist in the literature about coincidence measurements between evaporation residues and light charged particles. Signals of shape transitions can be found in the variations of the lineshape of high energy gamma rays emitted from the de-excitation of GDR states gated on different region of angular momenta. Neutron-rich silver isotopes were populated in the fragmentation of a 136Xe beam and the relativistic fission of 238U. The fragments were mass analyzed with the GSI Fragment separator and subsequently implanted into a passive stopper. Isomeric transitions were detected by 105 HPGe detectors. Eight isomeric states were observed in 122-126Ag nuclei. The level schemes of 122,123,125Ag were revised and extended with isomeric transitions being observed for the first time. The excited states in the odd-mass silver isotopes are interpreted as core-coupled states. The isomeric states in the even-mass silver isotopes are discussed in the framework of the proton-neutron split multiplets. The results of shell-model calculations, performed for the most neutron-rich silver nuclei are compared to the experimental data.

The response of AGATA segmented HPGe detectors to gamma rays in the energy range 2-15 MeV was measured. The 15.1 MeV gamma rays were produced using the reaction d(11B,ng)12C at Ebeam = 19.1 MeV, while gamma-rays between 2 to 9 MeV were produced using an Am-Be-Fe radioactive source. The energy resolution and linearity were studied and the energy-to-pulse-height conversion resulted to be linear within 0.05%. Experimental interaction multiplicity distributions are discussed and compared with the results of Geant4 simulations. It is shown that the application of gamma-ray tracking allows a suppression of background radiation following neutron capture by Ge nuclei. Finally the Doppler correction for the 15.1 MeV gamma line, performed using the position information extracted with Pulse-shape Analysis, is discussed., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

With a new detector setup and the high-resolution performance of the fragment separator FRS at GSI we discovered 57 new isotopes in the atomic number range of 60$\leq Z \leq 78$: \nuc{159-161}{Nb}, \nuc{160-163}{Pm}, \nuc{163-166}Sm, \nuc{167-168}{Eu}, \nuc{167-171}{Gd}, \nuc{169-171}{Tb}, \nuc{171-174}{Dy}, \nuc{173-176}{Ho}, \nuc{176-178}{Er}, \nuc{178-181}{Tm}, \nuc{183-185}{Yb}, \nuc{187-188}{Lu}, \nuc{191}{Hf}, \nuc{193-194}{Ta}, \nuc{196-197}{W}, \nuc{199-200}{Re}, \nuc{201-203}{Os}, \nuc{204-205}{Ir} and \nuc{206-209}{Pt}. The new isotopes have been unambiguously identified in reactions with a $^{238}$U beam impinging on a Be target at 1 GeV/u. The isotopic production cross-section for the new isotopes have been measured and compared with predictions of different model calculations. In general, the ABRABLA and COFRA models agree better than a factor of two with the new data, whereas the semiempirical EPAX model deviates much more. Projectile fragmentation is the dominant reaction creating the new isotopes, whereas fission contributes significantly only up to about the element holmium., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realization of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly-segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterization of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximize its science output. The gamma-decay associated with the warm rotation of the superdeformed (SD) nuclei 151Tb and 196Pb has been measured with the EUROBALL IV array. Several independent quantities provide a stringent test of the population and decay dynamics in the SD well. A Monte Carlo simulation of the gamma-decay based on microscopic calculations gives remarkable agreement with the data only assuming a large enhancement of the B(E1) strength at low excitation energy, which may be related to the evidence for octupole vibrations in both mass regions.

Exotic-deformation effects in 46Ti nucleus were investigated by analysing the high-energy gamma-ray and the alpha-particle energy spectra. One of the experiments was performed using the charged-particle multi-detector array ICARE together with a large volume (4"x4") BGO detector. The study focused on simultaneous measurement of light charged particles and gamma-rays in coincidence with the evaporation residues. The experimental data show a signature of very large deformations of the compound nucleus in the Jacobi transition region at the highest spins. These results are compared to data from previous experiments performed with the HECTOR array coupled to the EUROBALL array, where it was found that the GDR strength function is highly fragmented, strongly indicating a presence of nuclei with very large deformation., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, Proceedings of the Zakopane Conference on Nuclear Physics, to be published in Acta Phys. The gamma-ray spectra from the decay of the GDR in the compound nucleus reaction 18O+28Si at bombarding energy of 105 MeV have been measured in an experiment using the EUROBALL IV and HECTOR arrays. The obtained experimental GDR strength function is highly fragmented, with a low energy (10 MeV) component, indicating a presence of a large deformation and Coriolis effects. The gamma-rays from the decay of the GDR in 46Ti compound nucleus formed in the 18O+28Si reaction at bombarding energy 105 MeV have been measured in an experiment using a setup consisting of the combined EUROBALL IV, HECTOR and EUCLIDES arrays. A comparison of the extracted GDR lineshape data with the predictions of the thermal shape fluctuation model shows evidence for the Jacobi shape transition in hot 46Ti. The gamma-rays following the reaction 105 MeV 18O + 28Si have been measured using the EUROBALL IV, HECTOR and EUCLIDES arrays in order to investigate the predicted Jacobi shape transition.
