Contains fulltext : 216852.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), Atmospheric nitrogen deposition and other sources of environmental eutrophication have increased substantially over the past century worldwide, notwithstanding the recent declining trends in Europe. Despite the recognized susceptibility of plants to eutrophication, few studies evaluated how impacts propagate to consumers, such as pollinators. Here we aim to test if soil eutrophication contributes to the temporal dynamics of pollinators and their larval resources. We used a temporally and spatially explicit historical dataset with information on species occurrences to test if soil eutrophication, and more specifically nitrogen deposition, contributes to the patterns of change of plant and pollinator richness in the Netherlands over an 80 yr period. We focus on bees and butterflies, two groups for which we have good knowledge of larval resources that allowed us to define groups of species with different nitrogen related diet preferences. For each group we estimated richness changes between different 20-yr periods at local, regional and national scale, using analytical methods developed for analyzing richness changes based on collection data. Our findings suggest that the impacts of soil eutrophication on plant communities propagate to higher trophic levels, but with a time-lag. Pollinators with nitrogen-related diet preferences were particularly affected, in turn potentially impairing the performance of pollinator-dependent plants. Pollinator declines continued even after their focal plants started to recover. In addition, our results suggest that current levels of nitrogen deposition still have a negative impact on most groups here analyzed, constraining richness recoveries and accentuating declines. Our results indicate that the global increase in nitrogen availability plays an important role in the ongoing pollinator decline. De zomereik is karakteristiek voor het Nederlandse landschap. In meerdere habitattypen is deze loofboom dominant en daarbuiten komt hij ook veelvuldig voor. De laatste jaren is echter op veel plaatsen een geleidelijke achteruitgang in vitaliteit geconstateerd. Ook treedt lokaal soms sterk verhoogde sterfte op. In dit artikel worden de resultaten gepresnteerd van twee veldstudies naar de rol van versnelde bodemverzuring bij dit verontrustende verschijnsel.

Abstract

Voor behoud van biodiversiteit zou het optimaliseren van de interne kwaliteit en de vergroting van bestaande natuurterreinen de hoogste prioritiet moeten hebben in de dichtbevolkte West-Europese landen. Echter, één van de belangrijkste bedreigingen voor de interne kwaliteit en diversiteit in Nederlandse natuurgebieden zijn de gevolgen van N- en (vroeger) S-depositie. Er wordt al sinds 1989 in het kader van EGM en later OBN veel onderzoek gedaan naar herstel van deze aantasting. In deze bijdrage wordt ingegaan op herstelmogelijkheden in de praktijk en in hoeverre herstelbeheer nu nog nodig is.

Abstract

De laatste jaren zijn er op veel plaatsen in Nederland gunstige ontwikkelingen in waterkwaliteit en de biodiversiteit van water- en moerasnatuur. Het veranderende klimaat zal echter extra inspanningen vereisen met betrekking tot hydrologie en waterkwaliteit. Eén van de problemen is de erfenis uit het verleden: hoewel het water helder is, zit de waterbodem vaak nog vol voedingsstoffen, die sneller gemobiliseerd zullen worden. Daarom is het van belang om slim te meten, zodat beheerders een goede keuze kunnen maken tussen mogelijke maatregelen.

Contains fulltext : 60152.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access), The effects of sod cutting, a common restoration measure to remove excess nutrients from grass-dominated heathlands, on nitrification were studied in dry and wet Dutch heathlands and in incubation experiments. In the field, soil ammonium and nitrate concentrations were measured after treatment by sod cutting, with or without additional liming. Potential net nitrification was measured by incubating soil samples of all treatments with extra ammonium in a climate chamber at pH 6. Potential net nitrification of heaths dominated by Molinia caerulea was significantly higher than that of dwarf-shrub dominated heaths. Sod cutting of the former areas significantly decreased potential net nitrification, whereas in the latter areas no differences were found. Liming of sod-cut soils greatly increased potential net nitrification and the accumulation of ammonium in the soil up to toxic concentrations could be prevented. Our results show that the combination of sod cutting and liming would create suitable soil conditions for the germination and establishment of endangered plant species of dry and wet heathlands. The success of restoration projects of these areas can thus be increased.

Contains fulltext : 249600.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access), Germination experiments were conducted in a heathland after turf cutting and in a climate chamber to investigate the effects of turf cutting depth, aluminium toxicity and aluminium detoxification by humic acids and base cations on the germination and establishment of Arnica montana. Turfs were cut at three different depths, creating a gradient from organic to mineral soils. Germination and establishment of A. montana were negatively correlated with turf cutting depth. The removal of organic matter resulted in a major decrease in organic fraction of the soil and its nutrients. It also resulted in a considerable decrease in moisture content and humic acids. Additional liming after turf cutting increased germination and establishment in all plots and at all depths. Germination experiments under controlled conditions in a climate chamber revealed a significantly higher germination at low aluminium/calcium (Al:Ca) ratios. High Al:Ca ratios resulted in poor germination, suggesting Al toxicity. Addition of humic acids increased germination, even at high Al:Ca ratios, suggesting immobilization of Al by humic acids. It is concluded that turf cutting can have a marked effect on the success of heathland restoration. It results in the intended removal of the eutrophic layer but also in the unintentional removal of much of the buffering mechanisms and/or Al immobilizing compounds. Additional buffering and/or less deep turf cutting may be necessary to allow germination and establishment of rare herbaceous species such as A. montana.
