L’Épigravettien a été défini dans les années 1960 pour rendre compte de l’originalité des industries lithiques postérieures au Gravettien en Italie. L’extension progressive de cette entité à une grande partie de l’Europe méditerranéenne et orientale s’est également appuyée essentiellement sur les industries lithiques. Au cours des dernières décennies, le développement de l’approche technologique dans l’étude des industries lithiques, associé à une meilleure prise en compte des contextes archéologiques et des séquences stratigraphiques, a fortement renouvelé la perception de l’Épigravettien, de sa sériation et de son emprise chrono-géographique. Dans plusieurs régions, des travaux portant sur les transferts lithiques documentent des réseaux de déplacement et de contact s’établissant à différentes échelles. En parallèle, les recherches portant sur d’autres domaines techniques et culturels ont considérablement progressé au cours des dernières décennies et ont concerné des matériaux variés (parures, faunes, art pariétal et mobilier, sépultures...). Pourtant, ces recherches ont été généralement menées à l’intérieur du cadre fixé par les industries lithiques et n’ont querarement conduit à une rediscussion de ce dernier. Dans cette communication, nous proposons une première tentative de synthèse des données acquises et nous tentons de poser les bases d’un dialogue non hiérarchisé entre ces différents domaines de la culture matérielle. Cette position nous conduit à éprouver d’abord la consistance de l’entité épigravettienne en dehors des seules pratiques techniques lithiques et à évaluer les recouvrements et les écarts existant entre les séquences de changements identifiés au sein des différentes composantes des systèmes techniques. Cette discussion est menée en s’appuyant d’abord sur un noyau de connaissances établies au-tour de deux grands domaines géographiques : le nord-est de l’Italie et l’arc liguro-provençal. Nous élargissons ensuite la réflexion vers le sud et vers l’est. Chronologiquement, notre propos embrasse la durée de l’ Épigravettien (entre ca. 20 ka cal. BP et 11, 5 ka cal. BP), mais se concentrera sur certains épisodes critiques ou des changements forts sont perceptibles dans les pratiques culturelles de populations épigravettiennes.

RIASSUNTO - La diffusione del primo Aurignaziano a sud dell’arco alpino - I siti protoaurignaziani del Riparo Mochi e del Riparo Bombrini (Balzi Rossi, Alpi Marittime) e della Grotta di Fumane (Prealpi Venete) vengono confrontati sulla base dei seguenti aspetti: cronologia, aree di approvvigionamento dei materiali litici, lavorazione della selce (catene operative, prodotti, tipologia), manufatti in materie dure animali e provenienza delle conchiglie marine usate come parures. La comparsa del Protoaurignaziano nelle serie stratigrafiche dei tre siti avviene nel medesimo intervallo cronologico. Le industrie ricadono nella tradizione tecnologica del Protoaurignaziano, ma si differenziano per quanto riguarda aree di approvvigionamento della selce e tipologia delle armature. Le ricerche sinora condotte su scala europea attribuiscono al medesimo gruppo “italo-greco” le conchiglie marine dei tre siti; per la collezione di Fumane non vi sono dati sufficienti per stabilire la provenienza adriatica o tirrenica, anche se quest’ultima pare più probabile. Rapporti tra Fumane e spiagge liguri sono suggeriti anche da alcuni ciottoli utilizzati nel sito veneto. In conclusione: allo stato delle ricerche non pare possibile indicare, per l’Italia settentrionale, un modello di diffusione del Protoaurignaziano da est verso ovest o viceversa. I siti dei Balzi Rossi e di Fumane potrebbero essere espressione della migrazione di due gruppi di Uomini Moderni diversi, anche se legati da una medesima tradizione culturale. SUMMARY - The diffusion of the earliest Aurignacian south of the Alpine mountain range - The protoaurignacian assemblages of Mochi and Bombrini Shelters (Balzi Rossi, Maritime Alps) and Fumane Cave (Venetian Prealps) are compared on the basis of the following aspects: chronology, provenance of lithic raw material, techno-typological features of both lithic and bone industries and provenance of the marine shells used as personal ornaments. The Protoaurignacian is dated to the same chronological interval in the stratigraphic sequence of the three sites. The lithic industries belong to the technological tradition of the Protoaurignacian, but a difference between sites is observed in the provisioning areas of lithic raw material and in the typology of armatures. Analysis of aurignacian bead-types across Europe, attributes the marine shells of the three sites to an “italian-greek” group. Present data do not allow establishing the Adriatic or Tyrrhenian provenance of the Fumane marine shell-bead collection, although the latter seems more probable. A link between Fumane and the ligurian shores is also suggested by some pebbles used in the former site. The current state of knowledge does not favour a Protoaurignacian spreading model from east to west or vice versa. The Balzi Rossi and Fumane sites could have been the expressions of the migrations of different human groups, even if linked by a common cultural tradition.

Dans les Alpes Orientales italiennes, la circulation et l’exploitation des matières premières lithiques siliceuses durant le Mésolithique a fait jusqu’à présent l’objet d’études ponctuelles et limitées à quelques secteurs de cette région. Les plus importantes informations récoltées font référence aux sites des Dolomites, dans lesquels on rencontre une utilisation massive mais également exclusive de silex atypiques ou préalpins, à côté d’une exploitation complémentaire de matières premières locales de mauvaise qualité ou de quartz hyalin allochtone. Dans d’autres secteurs, le quartz hyalin a pleinement satisfait les exigences de la production. Dans le cas des Préalpes vénitiennes, la discontinuité dans la distribution territoriale des matières premières lithiques aptes à la taille est à l’origine d’activités similaires d’importation et d’adaptation des systèmes techno-économiques aux ressources locales. Comme cas d’étude, les auteurs se réfèrent au Haut-Plateau du Cansiglio, en présentant les résultats de l’étude du site sauveterrien de Casera Davià II et quelques observations préliminaires sur les sites épigravettiens récents et sauveterriens. In the Eastern Italian Alps, circulation and exploitation of lithic raw materials beyond supply areas during Mesolithic has been the subject of punctual and limited studies in some sectors of this region until nowadays. Most information have been provided from the Dolomites, where economic strategies involved important and sometimes exclusive, exploitation of exogenous flint supplied in the southern Adige Basin and in the Venetian Pre-Alps. This strategy also involved complementary exploitation of local raw material with scarce quality and of exogenous hyaline quartz. In other sectors of the region, the production aims were completely satisfied by the local hyaline quartz. In the Venetian Pre-Alps, the discontinuous distribution in flint sources influenced similar activities in raw material importation and adaptation of the techno-economic systems to local sources. As study-case, the authors propose evidence from the Cansiglio Plateau and discuss on the study conducted on the sauveterrian site Casera Davià II and on some preliminary observations regarding epigravettian and sauveterrian sites.

In attempt to enlighten the debate on the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition, this work contributes new data from a yet unpublished site, Riparo Broion in the north-east of Italy. Studies confirm the presence of the Uluzzian technocomplex embedded in an archaeological sequence which includes Mousterian, Gravettian and Epigravettian. These layers have yielded finds of bone and lithic technology, shell beads, engraved portable art and the use of red mineral pigments, which make this archive a unique case for evaluating the implications of cultural dynamics in Northern Italy 44.0–42.4ky BP. The diversity of the faunal assemblage recovered in layers 1f and 1g is representative of the different environments surrounding the site, with ungulates being targeted for hunting and consumption. The lithic assemblage records a high fragmentation rate due to the extensive use of the bipolar knapping technique, responsible for a large variety of splintered pieces and associated chips which also affected the backed pieces, lunates and end-scrapers. The features of the bone tools, as well as those of the marine and freshwater beads, echo the technique used in the Uluzzian in the south of Italy, confirming the geographic spread of this technocomplex in the North Adriatic region, as previously envisaged at Grotta Fumane. However, comparisons between these two sites stimulate a discussion around the possible driving forces responsible for the differences observed in technological, typological and structural lithic assemblages. A definitive scenario for the Middle Palaeolithic–Upper Palaeolithic transition in this region of Southern Europe is ongoing and Riparo Broion is adding key contributions.
