Background and Hypothesis: Breast cancer is more prevalent in women with severe mental illness than in the general population, and use of prolactin-increasing antipsychotics may be a contributing factor., Study Design: A nested case-control study was conducted using the Swedish nationwide registers (inpatient/outpatient care, sickness absence, disability pension, prescribed drugs, cancers). All women aged 18-85 years with schizophrenia/schizoaffective/other nonaffective psychotic disorder/bipolar disorder and breast cancer (cases) were matched for age, primary psychiatric diagnosis, and disease duration with five women without cancer (controls). The association between cumulative exposure to prolactin-increasing/prolactin-sparing antipsychotics and breast cancer was analyzed using conditional logistic regression, adjusted for comorbidities and co-medications., Study Results: Among 132 061 women, 1642 (1.24%) developed breast cancer between 2010 and 2021, at a mean age of 63.3 ± 11.8 years. Compared with 8173 matched controls, the odds of breast cancer increased in women with prior exposure to prolactin-increasing antipsychotics for 1-4 years (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.20, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.03-1.41), and for ≥ 5 years (aOR = 1.47, 95%CI = 1.26-1.71). There were no increased or decreased odds of breast cancer with exposure to prolactin-sparing antipsychotics of either 1-4 years (aOR = 1.17, 95%CI = 0.98-1.40) or ≥5 years (aOR = 0.99, 95%CI = 0.78-1.26). The results were consistent across all sensitivity analyses (ie, according to different age groups, cancer types, and primary psychiatric diagnosis)., Conclusions: Although causality remains uncertain, exposure to prolactin-elevating antipsychotics for ≥ 1 year was associated with increased odds of breast cancer in women with severe mental illness. Background: Substantial observational evidence suggests an association between neuropsychiatric conditions and venous thromboembolism (VTE). However, the causal relationship between these two conditions requires further investigation. Therefore, we used a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to assess the bidirectional causal effects between four neuropsychiatric conditions and VTE, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism (PE)., Methods: Genetic variants associated with four neuropsychiatric conditions (ie, schizophrenia, major depressive disorder [MDD], bipolar disorder, and epilepsy) and VTE, deep vein thrombosis, and PE were selected. Bidirectional univariable and multivariable MR methods were applied to evaluate the causal relationships among these conditions. The primary causal estimates were obtained using the inverse variance weighted method with multiplicative random effects, supplemented by MR Egger regression, weighted median, simple mode, and weighted mode. Sensitivity analysis was conducted using the MR pleiotropy residual sum, funnel plots, and outlier (MR pleiotropy and residual sum and outlier) method., Results: Univariable MR results showed that genetic susceptibility to MDD increases the risk of VTE and PE (VTE: odds ratio [OR], 1.25; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.08-1.46; P = .004; PE: OR, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.09-1.69; P = .006) and that PE has an adverse causal effect on MDD (OR, 1.02; 95% CI, 1.00-1.04; P = .026). Adjustment for confounders such as obesity, sleep duration, smoking, physical activity, and alcohol consumption revealed that increased genetic susceptibility to MDD is also associated with VTE and PE., Conclusions: Our results suggest that genetic susceptibility to MDD might have an adverse causal effect on the risk of VTE and PE and that PE has a reverse causal effect on MDD. Introduction: Background and aim: obesity is a very important problem in individuals with bipolar disorder. The study was aimed to determine the prevalence of obesity in individuals with bipolar disorder and to evaluate the effects of factors affecting eating behavior such as mindful eating, impulsivity and eating disorders on the development of obesity in these individuals. Methods: this study is a cross-sectional study. A total of 109 individuals (52 female; 57 male) with bipolar disorder who were in a euthymic state at the time of the interview and underwent outpatient follow-up, treatment and monitorization, and 109 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals as the control group were included in the study. The Mindful Eating Questionnaire-30 (MEQ-30), Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ-21), Barratt Impulsiveness Scale 11-Short Form (BIS-11-SF), and Eating Attitude Test-26 (EAT-26) were used, and anthropometric measurements (height, bodyweight, etc.) were taken. Results: the obesity rate was 50.4 % among the cases and 24.8 % in the control group. Moreover, disinhibition (3.4 ± 0.93), emotional eating (3.5 ± 1.13), and mindfulness (2.6 ± 0.54) scores of individuals with BD were significantly lower than for healthy individuals (3.7 ± 0.82, 4.0 ± 0.93, 2.8 ± 0.55, respectively). The risk of obesity was 5.19 times higher in cases compared to the age- and gender-matched controls (OR = 5.19, 95 % CI (2.01-13.37), p = 0.001). The risk of obesity was 2.76 times higher in those with low mindful eating level (OR = 2.76, 95 % CI (1.07-5.47), p = 0.014) and 4.29 times higher in those using antipsyhotics/mood stabilizers (OR = 4.29, 95 % CI (1.12-12.24), p < 0.001). Conclusion: A comprehensive education program on mindful eating and healthy eating would be helpful in elucidating the mechanisms of the possible relationships between bipolar disorder-specific risk factors and mindful eating.

Background: Despite the distinctly high risk of suicide among patients with psychiatric disorders, little is known regarding the nationwide rates and risk factors for suicide among individual subgroups of patients with psychiatric disorders. This study aimed to assess differences in suicide rates and identify risk factors for suicide across multiple psychiatric diseases using data from a nationally representative cohort in Korea., Methods: Six groups of incident patients with psychiatric disorders, namely those with drug use disorder (DUD), alcohol use disorder (AUD), schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar disorder (BD), depressive disorder (DD), or other affective disorders (OADs), were extracted from the National Health Information Database and followed up. Suicide rates and risk factors were then determined for each disease group., Results: Patients with psychiatric disorders had higher suicide rates than did the general population, with standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) ranging from 2.5 to 16.6. In particular, patients with DUD showed markedly higher suicide rate (584.0 per 100,000 person-years [PYs]; SMR, 16.6) than did patients with affective disorders, including DD (119.8 per 100,000 PYs; SMR, 3.1). AUD, DUD, SCZ, and BD showed lower male/female suicide rate ratios (1.1-1.4) than did depressive and OADs (2.2-2.4). Old age increased the risk for suicide among those with DUD and OADs, while medical aid recipients exhibited the lowest suicide risk among those with the AUD and SCZ. Background: This study examined psychiatric hospitalisation patterns in San Salvatore Hospital in L' Aquila (Italy), during two major crises: the 2009 earthquake and the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. The investigation spans two four-year periods, from 2008 to 2011 and from 2019 to 2022, with a focus on the trimester around the earthquake and the first wave/lockdown of the pandemic., Methods: We analysed weekly psychiatric unit admissions of adults diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorder, major depression, bipolar disorder, and alcohol/substance use disorder. Four-year periods around the Earthquake and COVID-19 Lockdown were divided into sixteen trimesters, and Generalised linear models were used to analyse the relationship between weekly hospitalisation frequency and trimesters by diagnosis using a Poisson distribution., Results: A total of 1195 and 1085 patients were admitted to the psychiatric ward in the 2008-2011 and 2019-2022 periods, respectively. Weekly hospitalisations in the earthquake trimester were lower than during the previous one for all diagnoses (schizophrenia spectrum: -41.9%, p = 0.040; major depression: -56.7%, p = 0.046; bipolar disorder: -69.1%, p = 0.011; alcohol/substance use disorder: -92.3%, p = 0.013). This reduction persisted for 21, 18, and 33 months after the earthquake for schizophrenia spectrum, bipolar, and alcohol/substance use disorders, respectively. Contrarily, patterns of weekly admissions around the COVID-19 lockdown remained substantially stable in the short term. However, a consistent long-term hospitalisation increase for all diagnoses characterised the first half of 2022 (the cessation of anti-COVID-19 measures; schizophrenia spectrum: +68.6%, p = 0.014; major depression: +133.3%, p = 0.033; bipolar disorder: +180.0%, p = 0.034; alcohol/substance use disorder: +475.0%, p = 0.001)., Conclusions: The present study indicated that exposure to major health crises can have both short- and long-term effects on psychiatric ward admission, holding significant implications for current and future major health emergency management strategies., (© 2024. Introduction: Female infertility is a global issue that impacts on public health seriously and many mental disorders are observed in infertility groups., Methods: To investigate the casual relationship between those, genome-wide association studies summary data of anxiety disorder (n=9,897), broad depression (n=322,580), major depressive disorder (n=480,359 and n=500,199), bipolar disorder (n=51,710), insomnia (n= 462,341), and female infertility (n=126,342) were extracted from the existing datasets and was analyzed through the two-sample mendelian randomization study. The following heterogeneity and sensitivity test were applied to ensure the robustness of results., Results: Based on inverse variance weighted results, major depressive disorder was associated with female infertility (P = 0.0001, odds ratio 1.396, 95 % confidence interval 1.175-1.658). No causal relationship was identified between the other four mental disorders and infertility. was found. Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disability and premature mortality. This study compared the overall survival (OS) between patients with MDD and non-MDD controls stratified by gender, age, and comorbidities., Methods: This nationwide population-based cohort study utilized longitudinal patient data (01/01/2010 - 12/31/2020) from the Hungarian National Health Insurance Fund database, which contains healthcare service data for the Hungarian population. Patients with MDD were selected and matched 1:1 to those without MDD using exact matching. The rates of conversion from MDD to bipolar disorder (BD) or schizophrenia were also investigated., Results: Overall, 471,773 patients were included in each of the matched MDD and non-MDD groups. Patients with MDD had significantly worse OS than non-MDD controls (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.50; 95% CI: 1.48-1.51; males HR = 1.69, 95% CI: 1.66-1.72; females HR = 1.40, 95% CI: 1.38-1.42). The estimated life expectancy of patients with MDD was 7.8 and 6.0 years less than that of controls aged 20 and 45 years, respectively. Adjusted analyses based on the presence of baseline comorbidities also showed that patients with MDD had worse survival than non-MDD controls (adjusted HR = 1.29, 95% CI: 1.28-1.31). After 11 years of follow-up, the cumulative conversions from MDD to BD and schizophrenia were 6.8 and 3.4%, respectively. Converted patients had significantly worse OS than non-converted patients., Conclusions: Compared with the non-MDD controls, a higher mortality rate in patients with MDD, especially in those with comorbidities and/or who have converted to BD or schizophrenia, suggests that early detection and personalized treatment of MDD may reduce the mortality in patients diagnosed with MDD.

Depersonalization/derealization disorder (DPD) is a prevalent yet inadequately understood clinical condition characterized by a recurrent or persistent sense of unreality. This study aims to provide insight into DPD through descriptive and comparative analyses involving a large group of Chinese participants. The socio-demographic details (age, gender proportion, education, occupational status, marital status), depersonalized and dissociative symptom characteristics (symptomatic factors or subscales of the Cambridge Depersonalization Scale and the Dissociative Experiences Scale), development trajectory (age of onset, potential precipitating factors, course characteristics), treatment history (duration of delayed healthcare attendance, duration of delayed diagnosis, previous diagnoses), and adverse childhood experiences of the DPD patients are presented. Comparisons of anxiety and depressive symptoms, alongside psychosocial functioning, between DPD participants and those diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, bipolar disorders, and major depressive disorder were conducted. The analysis highlights a higher male preponderance and early onset of DPD, symptomatology marked by derealization, notable impairment in psychosocial functioning, and prolonged periods of delayed healthcare attendance and diagnosis associated with symptom severity. Furthermore, noteworthy relationships between adverse childhood experiences and symptom levels were identified. Background: Bipolar disorder often emerges from depressive episodes and is initially diagnosed as depression. This study aimed to explore the effects of a prior depression diagnosis on outcomes in patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder., Methods: This cohort study analyzed data of patients aged 18-64 years who received a new bipolar disorder diagnosis in Japan, using medical claims data from January 2005 to October 2020 provided by JMDC, Inc. The index month was defined as the time of the bipolar diagnosis. The study assessed the incidence of psychiatric hospitalization, all-cause hospitalization, and mortality, stratified by the presence of a preceding depression diagnosis and its duration (≥1 or <1 year). Hazard ratios (HRs) and p-values were estimated using Cox proportional hazards models, adjusted for potential confounders, and supported by log-rank tests., Results: Of the 5595 patients analyzed, 2460 had a history of depression, with 1049 experiencing it for over a year and 1411 for less than a year. HRs for psychiatric hospitalization, all hospitalizations, and death in patients with a history of depression versus those without were 0.92 (95% CI = 0.78-1.08, p = 0.30), 0.87 (95% CI = 0.78-0.98, p = 0.017), and 0.61 (95% CI = 0.33-1.12, p = 0.11), respectively. In patients with preceding depression ≥1 year versus <1 year, HRs were 0.89 (95% CI = 0.67-1.19, p = 0.43) for psychiatric hospitalization, 0.85 (95% CI = 0.71-1.00, p = 0.052) for all hospitalizations, and 0.25 (95% CI = 0.07-0.89, p = 0.03) for death., Conclusion: A prior history and duration of depression may not elevate psychiatric hospitalization risk after bipolar disorder diagnosis and might even correlate with reduced hospitalization and mortality rates., (© 2024 The Author(s). Bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia (SZ) are associated with higher odds of suicide attempt (SA). In this study, we aimed to explore the effect of BD and SZ genetic liabilities on SA, also considering the contribution of behavioral traits, socioeconomic factors, and substance use disorders. Leveraging large-scale genome-wide association data from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC) and the UK Biobank (UKB), we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to evaluate the putative causal effect of BD (41,917 cases, 371,549 controls) and SZ (53,386 cases, 77,258 controls) on SA (26,590 cases, 492,022 controls). Then, we assessed the putative causal effect of BD and SZ on behavioral traits, socioeconomic factors, and substance use disorders. Considering the associations identified, we evaluated the direct causal effect of behavioral traits, socioeconomic factors, and substance use disorders on SA using a multivariable MR approach. The genetic liabilities to BD and SZ were associated with higher odds of SA (BD odds ratio (OR) = 1.24, p = 3.88 × 10 -12 ; SZ OR = 1.09, p = 2.44 × 10 -20 ). However, while the effect of mental distress (OR = 1.17, p = 1.02 × 10 -4 ) and risk-taking (OR = 1.52, p = 0.028) on SA was independent of SZ genetic liability, the BD-SA relationship appeared to account for the effect of these risk factors. Similarly, the association with loneliness on SA was null after accounting for the effect of SZ genetic liability. These findings highlight the complex interplay between genetic risk of psychiatric disorders and behavioral traits in the context of SA, suggesting the need for a comprehensive mental health assessment for high-risk individuals., (© 2024. Background and Hypothesis: The potential role of anesthesia as an independent risk factor for childhood bipolar disorder (BD) remains unclear. To address this, we conducted a population-based cohort study employing propensity score matching to compare BD incidence between pediatric patients undergoing surgery with and without general anesthesia., Study Design: Our study included patients aged 0-3 years who received at least 1 episode of general anesthesia and were hospitalized for over 1 day in Taiwan between January 2004 and December 2014. They were matched 1:1 with a population not receiving general anesthesia to assess pediatric BD incidence., Study Results: The study cohort comprised 15 070 patients, equally distributed between the general anesthesia and nongeneral anesthesia groups (7535 each). Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs; 95% CIs) for pediatric BD in the general anesthesia group as 1.26 (1.04-1.54; P = .021) compared to the nongeneral anesthesia group. Moreover, the incidence rate ratio (95% CI) for the general anesthesia group was 1.26 (1.03-1.53) compared to the nongeneral anesthesia group., Conclusions: Early childhood exposure to general anesthesia is significantly associated with an increased risk of pediatric BD. Background: Paranoia is a spectrum of fear-related experiences that spans diagnostic categories and is influenced by social and cognitive factors. The extent to which social media and other types of media use are associated with paranoia remains unclear., Objective: We aimed to examine associations between media use and paranoia at the within- and between-person levels., Methods: Participants were 409 individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum or bipolar disorder. Measures included sociodemographic and clinical characteristics at baseline, followed by ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) collected 3 times daily over 30 days. EMA evaluated paranoia and 5 types of media use: social media, television, music, reading or writing, and other internet or computer use. Generalized linear mixed models were used to examine paranoia as a function of each type of media use and vice versa at the within- and between-person levels., Results: Of the 409 participants, the following subgroups reported at least 1 instance of media use: 261 (63.8%) for using social media, 385 (94.1%) for watching TV, 292 (71.4%) for listening to music, 191 (46.7%) for reading or writing, and 280 (68.5%) for other internet or computer use. Gender, ethnoracial groups, educational attainment, and diagnosis of schizophrenia versus bipolar disorder were differentially associated with the likelihood of media use. There was a within-person association between social media use and paranoia: using social media was associated with a subsequent decrease of 5.5% (fold-change 0.945, 95% CI 0.904-0.987) in paranoia. The reverse association, from paranoia to subsequent changes in social media use, was not statistically significant. Other types of media use were not significantly associated with paranoia., Conclusions: This study shows that social media use was associated with a modest decrease in paranoia, perhaps reflecting the clinical benefits of social connection. Introduction: The cognitive impairment patterns and the association with Alzheimer's disease (AD) in mental disorders remain poorly understood., Methods: We analyzed data from 486,297 UK Biobank participants, categorizing them by mental disorder history to identify the risk of AD and the cognitive impairment characteristics. Causation was further assessed using Mendelian randomization (MR)., Results: AD risk was higher in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD; hazard ratio [HR] = 2.37, P < 0.01) and major depressive disorder (MDD; HR = 1.63, P < 0.001). MR confirmed a causal link between BD and AD (OR IVW  = 1.098), as well as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and AD (OR IVW  = 1.050). Cognitive impairments varied, with BD and schizophrenia showing widespread deficits, and OCD affecting complex task performance., Discussion: Observational study and MR provide consistent evidence that mental disorders are independent risk factors for AD. Mental disorders exhibit distinct cognitive impairment prior to dementia, indicating the potential different mechanisms in AD pathogenesis. Early detection of these impairments in mental disorders is crucial for AD prevention., Highlights: This is the most comprehensive study that investigates the risk and causal relationships between a history of mental disorders and the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), alongside exploring the cognitive impairment characteristics associated with different mental disorders. Individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) exhibited the highest risk of developing AD (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.37, P < 0.01), followed by those with major depressive disorder (MDD; HR = 1.63, P < 0.001). Individuals with schizophrenia (SCZ) showed a borderline higher risk of AD (HR = 2.36, P = 0.056). Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) confirmed a causal association between BD and AD (OR IVW  = 1.098, P < 0.05), as well as AD family history (proxy-AD, OR IVW  = 1.098, P < 0.001), and kept significant after false discovery rate correction. MR also identified a nominal significant causal relationship between the obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) spectrum and AD (OR IVW  = 1.050, P < 0.05). Observational studies have reported a relationship between multiple common dermatoses and mental illness. To assess the potential bidirectional causality between 3 skin disorders (psoriasis, eczema, and urticaria) and 4 psychiatric disorders (bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and anxiety) in the European population, we used Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, which provides definitive evidence for causal inference. Eligible single nucleotide polymorphisms were screened for dermatological and psychiatric disorders using a genome-wide association study database. We conducted bidirectional, 2-sample MR analysis using instrumental variables related to psoriasis, eczema, and urticaria as exposure factors, and bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, major depression, and anxiety as outcomes. Reverse MR analysis with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, major depression, and anxiety as exposure and psoriasis, eczema, and urticaria as outcomes were also performed, and the causality was analyzed using inverse-variance weighting (IVW), MR-Egger, and weighted median methods. To thoroughly assess causality, sensitivity analyses were conducted using the IVW, MR-PRESSO, and MR-Egger methods. The results showed that bipolar disorder increased the incidence of psoriasis (odds ratio = 1.271, 95% confidence interval = 1.003-1.612, P = .047), heterogeneity test with Cochran Q test in the IVW showed P value > .05, (P = .302), the MR-Pleiotropy and MR-PRESSO (outlier methods) in the multiplicity test showed P value > .05, (P = .694; P = .441), and MR-Pleiotropy evidence showed no apparent intercept (intercept = -0.060; SE = 0.139; P = .694). Major depression increased the risk of eczema (odds ratio = 1.002, 95% confidence interval = 1.000-1.004, P = .024), heterogeneity test showed P value > .05, (P = .328), multiplicity detection showed P value > .05, (P = .572; P = .340), and MR-Pleiotropy evidence showed no apparent intercept (intercept = -0.099; SE = 0.162; P = .572). Sensitivity analyses of the above results were reliable, and no heterogeneity or multiplicity was found. Background: Individuals with psychiatric disorders have an increased risk of developing dementia. Most cross-sectional studies suffer from selection bias, underdiagnosis and poor population representation, while there is only limited evidence from longitudinal studies on the role of anxiety, bipolar and psychotic disorders. Electronic health records (EHRs) permit large cohorts to be followed across the lifespan and include a wide range of diagnostic information., Objective: To assess the association between four groups of psychiatric disorders (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder/mania, depression and anxiety) with dementia in two large population-based samples with EHR., Methods: Using EHR on nearly 1 million adult individuals in Wales, and from 228 937 UK Biobank participants, we studied the relationships between schizophrenia, mania/bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety and subsequent risk of dementia., Findings: In Secure Anonymised Information Linkage, there was a steep increase in the incidence of a first diagnosis of psychiatric disorder in the years prior to the diagnosis of dementia, reaching a peak in the year prior to dementia diagnosis for all psychiatric diagnoses. Psychiatric disorders, except anxiety, were highly significantly associated with a subsequent diagnosis of dementia: HRs=2.87, 2.80, 1.63 for schizophrenia, mania/bipolar disorder and depression, respectively. A similar pattern was found in the UK Biobank (HRs=4.46, 3.65, 2.39, respectively) and anxiety was also associated with dementia (HR=1.34). Importance: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is present in nearly half of individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) and is associated with markedly worsening outcomes. Yet, the concurrent treatment of BD and AUD remains neglected in both research and clinical care; characterizing their dynamic interplay is crucial in improving outcomes., Objective: To characterize the longitudinal alcohol use patterns in BD and examine the temporal associations among alcohol use, mood, anxiety, and functioning over time., Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study selected participants and analyzed data from the Prechter Longitudinal Study of Bipolar Disorder (PLS-BD), an ongoing cohort study that recruits through psychiatric clinics, mental health centers, and community outreach events across Michigan and collects repeated phenotypic data. Participants selected for the present study were those with a diagnosis of BD type I (BDI) or type II (BDII) who had been in the study for at least 5 years. Data used were extracted from February 2006 to April 2022, and follow-up ranged from 5 to 16 years., Main Outcomes and Measures: Alcohol use was measured using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. Depression, mania or hypomania, anxiety, and functioning were measured using the 9-Item Patient Health Questionnaire, the Altman Self-Rating Mania Scale, the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder assessment scale, and the Life Functioning Questionnaire, respectively., Results: A total of 584 individuals (386 females (66.1%); mean [SD] age, 40 [13.6] years) were included. These participants had a BDI (445 [76.2%]) or BDII (139 [23.8%]) diagnosis, with or without a lifetime diagnosis of AUD, and a median (IQR) follow-up of 9 (0-16) years. More problematic alcohol use was associated with worse depressive (β = 0.04; 95% credibility interval [CrI], 0.01-0.07) and manic or hypomanic symptoms (β = 0.04; 95% CrI, 0.01-0.07) as well as lower workplace functioning (β = 0.03; 95% CrI, 0.00-0.06) over the next 6 months, but increased depressive and manic or hypomanic symptoms were not associated with greater subsequent alcohol use. These latter 2 associations were more pronounced in BDII than BDI (mania or hypomania: β = 0.16 [95% CrI, 0.02-0.30]; workplace functioning: β = 0.26 [95% CrI, 0.06-0.45]). Alcohol use was not associated with anxiety over time., Conclusions and Relevance: This study found that alcohol use, regardless of diagnostic status, was associated with mood instability and poorer work functioning in BD, but increased mood symptoms were not associated with subsequent alcohol use. Given its prevalence and repercussions, dimensional and longitudinal assessment and management of alcohol use are necessary and should be integrated into research and standard treatment of BD.

Aim: This study aimed to verify the real-world efficacy and safety of quetiapine fumarate extended-release tablets (Bipresso® 50 mg and 150 mg; marketing authorization holder is KYOWA Pharmaceutical Industry Co., Ltd., Osaka, Japan) in patients with bipolar depression., Methods: We performed a post-marketing surveillance with an observation period of 12 weeks., Results: In the safety analysis group (n = 345), adverse drug reactions (ADRs) occurred in 111 patients (32.17%). The most common ADRs (>1%) were somnolence in 55 patients (15.94%), akathisia in 11 (3.19%), dizziness in 10 (2.90%), weight increase in 6 (1.74%), thirst in 5 (1.45%), and hypersomnia, constipation, and nausea in 4 patients each (1.16%). The only severe ADR was one patient of suicidal ideation, and "longer time since the onset of the first episode" (p = 0.011) and "presence of complications" (p < 0.001) were identified as significant risk factors for the occurrence of ADRs. In the efficacy analysis group (n = 265), the average changes from baseline in the total Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) score were -7.3 ± 8.8, -12.2 ± 10.7, -16.8 ± 12.7, and -13.2 ± 12.7 points after 4, 8, and 12 weeks, and at the last evaluation, respectively. The mean MADRS total score decrease had no significant association with maximum daily dose, diagnosis, and presence or absence of prior or concomitant treatment for bipolar disorder with mood stabilizers/antipsychotics/antidepressants., Conclusion: The efficacy of quetiapine fumarate extended-release tablets was confirmed in clinical practice, and no new safety concerns or risks were identified., (© 2024 The Authors. Background: Psychiatric comorbidities have been shown to influence outcomes of various orthopedic pathologies. This study aimed to compare rates of delayed scaphoid union and surgical intervention for fractures in patients with and without comorbid psychiatric diagnoses., Methods: A matched retrospective cohort study was performed using the PearlDiver database to determine the association of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia with delayed union rates within 3 and 6 months and rates of nonacute surgical intervention (fixation or grafting) within 6 and 12 months of scaphoid fracture. Analyses were completed using multivariate logistic regression., Results: Among 20 340 patients, a comorbid psychiatric diagnosis was associated with increased rates of delayed scaphoid union at 3 months (odds ratio [OR] = 1.29; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.14-1.45) and 6 months (OR = 1.23; 95% CI, 1.10-1.38). At 3 months, women with any psychiatric disorder (OR = 1.58; 1.29-1.66), depression (OR = 1.68; 1.31-2.17), and schizophrenia (OR = 5.32; 95% CI, 1.06-26.79) were more likely to experience delayed union, with similar results at 6 months. Men with bipolar disorder experienced increased delayed union rates at 6 months (OR = 1.40; 1.03-1.91). A comorbid psychiatric diagnosis (OR = 1.10; 1.01-1.20) was associated with increased rates of surgical intervention, whereas schizophrenia was associated with decreased rates (OR = 0.58; 0.34-0.99)., Conclusion: Patients with comorbid psychiatric conditions experienced increased rates of delayed scaphoid union. Background: Metabolic syndrome (Mets) is commonly seen in bipolar disorder (BD). As the key component and early biological index of Mets, insulin resistance (IR) among BD has received more and more attention. However, little is known about the prevalence of IR and its associated factors in drug-naïve patients with (BD), especially among Han Chinese population., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 125 drug-naïve patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and 85 healthy controls (HC). The Homeostatic Model Assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated, and IR was defined as HOMA-IR greater than the 75th percentile value for health controls (2.35). Clinical characteristics of BD were collected through semi-structural interview performed by a trained interviewer with background of psychiatric education., Results: Among the measured anthropocentric variables including BMI, waist circumference, abdomen circumference, hipline, and hip-waist ratio, waist circumference was found to be the most closely related to IR (0R = 1.070, 95%CI = 1.031-1.110, P < 0.001). Male was another factor that was associated with IR (OR = 2.281, 95%CI = 1.107-4.702, P = 0.025). After adjusted for gender and waist circumference, the risk of IR was significantly higher in bipolar disorder than in healthy controls (OR = 2.66, 95%CI = 1.364-5.214, P = 0.004). No significant association was found between IR and any of the observed physical and mental comorbidities, any characteristic of illness course including age onset, number of mixed episodes, types of current state, duration of current episode, duration of illness course, rapid cycling, number of mood episodes, and subgroup of BD. Hypersomnia was the only symptomatic feature that was significantly associated with IR (OR = 0.316, 95%CI = 0.124-0.803, P = 0.016)., Conclusions: Bipolar disorder increases two-to-three-fold risk of IR, both circumference and male are the risk factors of IR but hypersomnia act as a protective factor., (© 2024. Background: To explore the demographic and clinical features of current depressive episode that discriminate patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) from those with bipolar I (BP-I) and bipolar II (BP-II) disorder who were misdiagnosed as having MDD ., Methods: The Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) assessment was performed to establish DSM-IV diagnoses of MDD, and BP-I and BP-II, previously being misdiagnosed as MDD. Demographics, depressive symptoms and psychiatric comorbidities were compared between 1463 patients with BP-I, BP-II and MDD from 8 psychiatric settings in mainland China. A multinomial logistic regression model was performed to assess clinical correlates of diagnoses., Results: A total of 14.5% of the enrolled patients initially diagnosed with MDD were eventually diagnosed with BP. Broad illness characteristics including younger age, higher prevalence of recurrence, concurrent dysthymia, suicidal attempts, agitation, psychotic features and psychiatric comorbidities, as well as lower prevalence of insomnia, weight loss and somatic symptoms were featured by patients with BP-I and/or BP-I, compared to those with MDD. Comparisons between BP-I and BP-II versus MDD indicated distinct symptom profiles and comorbidity patterns with more differences being observed between BP-II and MDD, than between BP-I and MDD ., Conclusion: The results provide evidence of clinically distinguishing characteristics between misdiagnosed BP-I and BP- II versus MDD. Background and Hypothesis: Serious mental illness (SMI) may compromise diabetes self-management. This study assessed the association between SMI and glycemic control, and explored sociodemographic predictors and geographic clustering of this outcome among patients with and without SMI., Study Design: We used electronic health record data for adult primary care patients with diabetes from 2 San Francisco health care delivery systems. The primary outcome was poor glycemic control (hemoglobin A1c >9.0%), which was modeled on SMI diagnosis status and sociodemographics. Geospatial analyses examined hotspots of poor glycemic control and neighborhood characteristics., Study Results: The study included 11 694 participants with diabetes, 21% with comorbid SMI, of whom 22% had a schizophrenia spectrum or bipolar disorder. Median age was 62 years; 52% were female and 79% were Asian, Black, or Hispanic. In adjusted models, having schizophrenia spectrum disorder or bipolar disorder was associated with greater risk for poor glycemic control (vs participants without SMI, adjusted relative risk [aRR] = 1.24; 95% confidence interval, 1.02, 1.49), but having broadly defined SMI was not. People with and without SMI had similar sociodemographic correlates of poor glycemic control including younger versus older age, Hispanic versus non-Hispanic White race/ethnicity, and English versus Chinese language preference. Hotspots for poor glycemic control were found in neighborhoods with more lower-income, Hispanic, and Black residents., Conclusions: Poor diabetes control was significantly related to having a schizophrenia spectrum or bipolar disorder, and to sociodemographic factors and neighborhood. Background: Cancer survival and mortality outcomes for people with mental health and substance use conditions (MHSUC) are worse than for people without MHSUC, which may be partly explained by poorer access to timely and appropriate healthcare, from screening and diagnosis through to treatment and follow-up. Access and quality of healthcare can be evaluated by comparing the proportion of people who receive a cancer diagnosis following an acute or emergency hospital admission (emergency presentation) across different population groups: those diagnosed with cancer following an emergency presentation have lower survival., Methods: National mental health service use datasets (2002-2018) were linked to national cancer registry and hospitalisation data (2006-2018), to create a study population of people aged 15 years and older with one of four cancer diagnoses: lung, prostate, breast and colorectal. The exposure group included people with a history of mental health/addiction service contact within the five years before cancer diagnosis, with a subgroup of people with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or psychotic disorders. Marginal standardised rates were used to compare emergency presentations (hospital admission within 30 days of cancer diagnosis) in the exposure and comparison groups, adjusted for age, gender (for lung and colorectal cancers), ethnicity, area deprivation and stage at diagnosis., Results: For all four cancers, the rates of emergency presentation in the fully adjusted models were significantly higher in people with a history of mental health/addiction service use than people without (lung cancer, RR 1.19, 95% CI 1.13, 1.24; prostate cancer RR 1.69, 95% CI 1.44, 1.93; breast cancer RR 1.42, 95% CI 1.14, 1.69; colorectal cancer 1.31, 95% CI 1.22, 1.39). Rates were substantially higher in those with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or psychotic disorders., Conclusions: Implementing pathways for earlier detection and diagnosis of cancers in people with MHSUC could reduce the rates of emergency presentation, with improved cancer survival outcomes. Introduction: People with severe mental illness (SMI) face a higher risk of premature mortality due to physical morbidity compared to the general population. Establishing regular contact with a general practitioner (GP) can mitigate this risk, yet barriers to healthcare access persist. Population initiatives to overcome these barriers require efficient identification of those persons in need., Objective: To develop a predictive model to identify persons with SMI not attending a GP regularly., Method: For individuals with psychotic disorder, bipolar disorder, or severe depression between 2011 and 2016 (n = 48,804), GP contacts from 2016 to 2018 were retrieved. Two logistic regression models using demographic and clinical data from Danish national registers predicted severe mental illness without GP contact. Model 1 retained significant main effect variables, while Model 2 included significant bivariate interactions. Goodness-of-fit and discriminating ability were evaluated using Hosmer-Lemeshow (HL) test and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), respectively, via cross-validation., Results: The simple model retained 11 main effects, while the expanded model included 13 main effects and 10 bivariate interactions after backward elimination. HL tests were non-significant for both models (p = 0.50 for the simple model and p = 0.68 for the extended model). Their respective AUC values were 0.789 and 0.790., Conclusion: Leveraging Danish national register data, we developed two predictive models to identify SMI individuals without GP contact. The extended model had slightly better model performance than the simple model. Background: The devastating health, economic, and social consequences of COVID-19 may harm the already vulnerable groups, particularly people with severe psychiatric disorders (SPDs). The present study was conducted to investigate the anxiety response of patients with SPDs during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: A total of 351 patients with SPDs [Schizophrenia Spectrum (SSD), Bipolar (BD), Major Depressive (MDD), and Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Disorders] and healthy controls in Guilan province, Iran, throughout 2021-2022 were included in this cross-sectional analytical study. The anxiety response consisted of four concepts: COVID-19-related anxiety, general health anxiety, anxiety sensitivity, and safety behaviors. We conducted an unstructured interview and provided sociodemographic and clinical information. Also, the participants were asked to complete four self-report measures of the Corona Disease Anxiety Scale, the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-Revised, the Short Health Anxiety Inventory, and the Checklist of Safety Behaviors., Results: Analysis of variance showed a significant difference between the groups of patients with SPDs and the control group in COVID-19-related anxiety (F = 6.92, p = 0.0001), health anxiety (F = 6.21, p = 0.0001), and safety behaviors (F = 2.52, p = 0.41). No significant difference was observed between them in anxiety sensitivity (F = 1.77, p = 0.134). The Games-Howell test showed that the control group obtained a higher mean than the groups of people with BD (p < 0.0001), SSD (p = 0.033), and OCD (p = 0.003) disorders in COVID-19-related anxiety. The patients with MDD (p = 0.014) and OCD (p = 0.01) had a higher mean score than the control group in health anxiety. Tukey's test showed that the mean of safety behaviors of the control group was significantly higher than the OCD group (p = 0.21). No significant difference was found between the groups of patients with MDD, BD, SSD, and OCD in terms of COVID-19-related anxiety, health anxiety, and safety behaviors., Conclusion: Anxiety response to health crisis is different in groups with SPDs and control group. The findings of this study suggest that although health anxiety is present in many of these patients during the pandemic, their anxiety response to the health crisis may be less than expected. There can be various explanations, such as pre-existing symptoms, low health literacy, and possible co-occurring cognitive impairment. The results of this study have many practical and policy implications in meeting the treatment needs of this group of patients during public health crises and indicate that their needs may not be compatible with the expectations and estimates that health professionals and policymakers already have., (© 2024. Background: Mental health disorders (MHDs) are associated with physical health disparities, but underlying excess risk and health burden have not yet been comprehensively assessed., Objective: To assess the burden of comorbid physical health conditions (PHCs) across serious MHDs in Europe., Methods: We estimated the relative prevalence risk of PHCs associated with alcohol use disorders (AUD), bipolar disorder (BD), depressive disorders (DD) and schizophrenia (SZ) across working-age populations of 32 European countries in 2019 based on a targeted literature review. Excess physical health burden was modelled using population-attributable fractions and country-level prevalence data., Findings: We screened 10 960 studies, of which 41 were deemed eligible, with a total sample size of over 18 million persons. Relative prevalence of PHCs was reported in 54%, 20%, 15%, 5% and 7% of studies, respectively, for SZ, DD, BD, AUD or mixed. Significant relative risk estimates ranged from 1.44 to 3.66 for BD, from 1.43 to 2.21 for DD, from 0.81 to 1.97 for SZ and 3.31 for AUD. Excess physical health burden ranged between 27% and 67% of the total, corresponding to 84 million (AUD), 67 million (BD), 66 million (DD) and 5 million (SZ) PHC diagnoses in Europe. A 1% reduction in excess risk assuming causal inference could result in two million fewer PHCs across investigated MHDs., Conclusions: This is the first comprehensive study of the physical health burden of serious MHDs in Europe. Objectives: Many people who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder also have comorbid personality disorder. Few studies have explored how personality disorder may influence pharmacological treatment outcomes. The aim of this study was to conduct a secondary analysis of data from a clinical trial of adjunctive nutraceutical treatments for bipolar depression, to determine whether maladaptive personality traits influence treatment outcomes., Methods: Scores on the Standardised Assessment of Personality - Abbreviated Scale screener were used to classify participants as having bipolar disorder with ( n  = 119) and without ( n  = 29) above threshold personality disorder symptoms (personality disorder). Outcome measures included: The Montgomery Åsberg Depression Rating Scale, Clinical Global Impressions and Improvement Severity Scales, Patient Global Impressions-Improvement scale, Bipolar Depression Rating Scale, Range of Impaired Functioning Tool, Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale and Quality of Life and Enjoyment Scale (Quality of Life Enjoyment and Satisfaction Questionnaire-Short Form). Generalised estimated equations examined the two-way interactions of personality disorder by time or treatment and investigated personality disorder as a non-specified predictor of outcomes., Results: Over time, the Patient Global Impressions-Improvement scores were significantly higher in those in the personality disorder group. No other significant differences in the two-way interactions of personality disorder by treatment group or personality disorder by time were found. Personality disorder was a significant but non-specific predictor of poorer outcomes on the Bipolar Depression Rating Scale, Range of Impaired Functioning Tool, and Quality of Life Enjoyment and Satisfaction Questionnaire-Short Form, regardless of time or treatment group., Conclusions: This study highlights the potential impact of maladaptive personality traits on treatment outcomes and suggests that the presence of comorbid personality disorder may confer additional burden and compromise treatment outcomes. This warrants further investigation as does the corroboration of these exploratory findings. Background: An increasing number of adults over 60 years old are presenting with requests for treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the prevalence of ADHD in older adults in geriatrics is unknown. Further, comorbid bipolar disorder and adult ADHD are likely underrecognized with many patients only receiving treatment for one of these conditions. The occurrence of bipolar disorder with geriatric onset ADHD is unknown., Case Presentation: A 64-year-old Hispanic woman with a psychiatric history of bipolar I disorder (diagnosed in early adulthood) was diagnosed with ADHD suspected of geriatric onset, and able to be successfully managed on concurrent mood stabilizers and psychostimulant medication., Conclusions: The findings of this case report emphasize the importance of appropriately recognizing and treating comorbid ADHD and bipolar disorder in any age group, including the geriatric population for which this occurrence appears to be very rare. Background: Bipolar disorders are serious mental illnesses, yet evidence suggests that the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder can be delayed by around 6 years., Aim: To identify signals of undiagnosed bipolar disorder using routinely collected electronic health records., Design and Setting: A nested case-control study conducted using the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) GOLD dataset, an anonymised electronic primary care patient database linked with hospital records. 'Cases' were adult patients with incident bipolar disorder diagnoses between 1 January 2010 and 31 July 2017., Method: The patients with bipolar disorder (the bipolar disorder group) were matched by age, sex, and registered general practice to 20 'controls' without recorded bipolar disorder (the control group). Annual episode incidence rates were estimated and odds ratios from conditional logistic regression models were reported for recorded health events before the index (diagnosis) date., Results: There were 2366 patients with incident bipolar disorder diagnoses and 47 138 matched control patients (median age 40 years and 60.4% female: n = 1430/2366 with bipolar disorder and n = 28 471/47 138 without). Compared with the control group, the bipolar disorder group had a higher incidence of diagnosed depressive, psychotic, anxiety, and personality disorders and escalating self-harm up to 10 years before a bipolar disorder diagnosis. Sleep disturbance, substance misuse, and mood swings were more frequent among the bipolar disorder group than the control group. The bipolar disorder group had more frequent face-to-face consultations, and were more likely to miss multiple scheduled appointments and to be prescribed ≥3 different psychotropic medication classes in a given year., Conclusion: Psychiatric diagnoses, psychotropic prescriptions, and health service use patterns might be signals of unreported bipolar disorder. Objective: There is increasing interest in early intervention and detection strategies for youth at-risk of developing a serious mental illness (SMI). Little is known about early factors that may be related to the later development of a SMI; thus, the aim of this study was to determine what clinical factors might relate to the development of in this study psychosis, bipolar disorder and severe or recurrent major depression in at-risk youth., Method: The sample consisted of 162 youth aged 12-26 years at different stages of risk. Thirty-one participants developed a SMI during the study. Those who made a transition were compared on a range of baseline clinical and functional measures with those who did not make the transition. A Cox regression model was used to assess the association between measures and later development of a SMI., Results: Female sex, attenuated psychotic symptoms as assessed with the Scale of Psychosis-Risk Symptoms (SOPS) and ratings on the K-10 Distress Scale, were found to be significantly associated with the later transition to mental illness. Females were 2.77 times more likely to transition compared to males. Objective: Suicide risk in bipolar disorder (BD) is estimated to be up to 20 times higher than in the general population. While there is a large body of evidence suggesting that increased sympathetic activation is associated with disease and death, there is a paucity of research on the role of autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction in patients with BD who have attempted suicide., Methods: Fifty-three participants with BD used a wearable device to assess the association between history of suicide attempt, current suicidal ideation, and ANS dysfunction, including measures of heart rate variability (HRV) and respiratory rate. Data were analyzed in a series of unadjusted and adjusted bivariate models of association controlling for relevant variables., Results: A history of suicide attempts was significantly associated with an increase in respiratory rate ( p  < 0.01). These results remained significant after adjusting for age, BMI, and current mood state. There was no association between current suicidal ideation and heart rate or respiratory rate. In the frequency domain, HRV parameters suggest reduced parasympathetic (i.e., vagal) activity in participants with a history of suicide attempts and in those with current suicidality, suggesting changes in sympathicovagal balance in BD., Conclusions: Our results suggest that changes in the ANS in patients with BD and a history of suicide attempt are not restricted to pure vagally mediated HRV parameters, but rather signal a general ANS dysregulation. This ANS imbalance may be contributing to illness burden and cardiovascular disease. Background: There has been no previous study in Thailand regarding the incidence of lithium-induced abnormal renal function. Hence, this study aimed to assess the effect of lithium maintenance therapy on chronic kidney disease, and associated factors among outpatients diagnosed with a psychiatric illness within Southern Thailand., Methods: This was a retrospective study, using an information review from the electronic medical records of Songklanagarind Hospital computer system in the last ten years; from 1 January 2013 until 31 September 2022. Chronic kidney disease was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate of less than 60 mL/min/1.73 m 2 and persisted for three months or more. There were 461 outpatients diagnosed with a psychiatric illness who received lithium maintenance therapy. From this, 154 outpatients were excluded: 153 received lithium therapy for less than three months and 1 presented with a baseline chronic kidney disease. All data were analyzed using Rstudio 4.3.1. The incidence of lithium-induced chronic kidney disease was analyzed by survival analysis., Results: Of the 307 outpatients diagnosed with a psychiatric illness and received lithium maintenance therapy, the most common diagnosis was bipolar disorder (59.3%). Most were female (52.8%), with the median (IQR) age of 39.0 (27.5-54.0) years. The median (IQR) age onset of lithium therapy and duration of lithium maintenance therapy were 28.0 (21.0-41.5) years, and 2.97 (0.9-9.2) years, respectively. This study identified six outpatients (1.9%) that developed chronic kidney disease stage 3 or more and one of them (0.3%) presented with chronic kidney disease stage 5 or end-stage. The incidence of lithium-induced chronic kidney disease was 0.0023 cases per exposed patient-year. When comparing outpatients who had received lithium maintenance therapy and developed chronic kidney disease with those who did not develop chronic kidney disease, this study identified that most of the group with chronic kidney disease had a lithium maintenance therapy for more than ten years, had an older age onset of lithium therapy, reported history of psychiatric hospitalization and lithium intoxication, and presented with physical illness. The associated factors between the effect of lithium maintenance therapy and chronic kidney disease could not be identified due to a limited number of outpatients having developed chronic kidney disease., Conclusions: Lithium-induced chronic kidney disease was identified as a minor incidence, and it was likely safe for maintenance therapy with careful and regular monitoring. The association of bipolar disorder (BD) with the risk of cardiometabolic diseases and premature death in Asians needs to be further determined. Relatively less attention has been paid to heart failure (HF) among cardiometabolic outcomes. We analyzed the Korean National Health Insurance Service database (2002-2018) for this population-based, matched cohort study. The hazards of ischemic stroke, ischemic heart disease (IHD), hospitalization for HF (hHF), composite cardiometabolic diseases, and all-cause mortality during follow-up were compared between individuals with BD (n = 11,329) and 1:1-matched controls without psychiatric disorders among adults without cardiometabolic disease before or within 3 months of baseline. Hazards of outcomes were higher in individuals with BD than in matched controls (adjusted hazard ratios [95% confidence intervals]: 1.971 [1.414-2.746] for ischemic stroke, 1.553 [1.401-1.721] for IHD, 2.526 [1.788-3.567] for hHF, 1.939 [1.860-2.022] for composite cardiometabolic diseases, and 2.175 [1.875-2.523] for all-cause mortality) during follow-up. Associations between BD and outcome hazards were more prominent in younger individuals (p for interaction < 0.02, except for ischemic stroke) and women (p for interaction < 0.04, except for hHF). Screening and preventive measures for cardiometabolic deterioration and early mortality may need to be intensified in individuals with BD, even in young adults, especially women., (© 2024. Background: Depressive disorder is one of the severe and common mental illnesses in the general population. Bipolar disorder is a severe, persistent mental illness associated with significant morbidity and mortality. However, there is a paucity of data on the prevalence of depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder in our study area., Objective: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of depressive and bipolar disorders among adults in Kersa, Haramaya, and Harar Health and Demographic Surveillance Sites in Eastern Ethiopia., Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,416 participants. A multi-stage sampling was employed to select the participants. DSM-5 diagnostic criteria was used to assess depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. Data was collected using a standard questionnaire. Data were entered into Epi-Data 3.1 and analyzed using SPSS version 26. Both binary and multivariate logistic regression analyses were done. Those with a p-value < 0.05 in the final model were considered statistically significant., Results: The overall prevalence of depressive and bipolar disorders among our study participants was 6.7% (95% CI: 5.40, 8.20) and 2.1% (95% CI: (1.40, 3.00), respectively. The independent predictors of depressive disorder included a family history of mental illness, chronic medical illnesses, unemployment, low educational status, divorced or widowed, poor social support, and current alcohol use or khat chewing. Single, males, divorced or widowed, and current consumers of alcohol were independent predictors for bipolar disorder., Conclusions and Recommendation: The results of our investigation showed that bipolar illness and depression were significant public health issues. It was shown that although bipolar disorder is highly prevalent in the society, depression is a widespread concern. As a result, it is imperative that the relevant body grow and enhance the provision of mental health services. Background: Bipolar Affective Disorder (BD) is a serious condition that affects more than 1% of the world's population. If not treated can cause disability, yet its prevalence in Zimbabwe is not known. This study explores the burden of Bipolar Disorder and its associated factors in Zimbabwe., Methods: A cross sectional study with a sample of 272 participants was carried out at three tertiary hospitals in Zimbabwe. Data was collected using an interviewer administered questionnaire and the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I). The study shows the prevalence and factors associated with Bipolar Disorder at tertiary psychiatric hospitals. Data analysis was done using STATA S/E 13.0 for data management., Results: The prevalence of BD in the sample was 39.3%. Factors associated with BD were, being formally employed (AOR = 3.69, 95%CI: 1.55-8.79), a history of defaulting medications (AOR = 1.90, 95%CI: 1.02-3.57) and a reported previous diagnosis of BD (AOR = 5.66, 95%CI: 2.72-11.8)., Conclusions: The prevalence of BD among admitted participants in tertiary psychiatric hospitals in Zimbabwe is high. It is comparable to that from African studies done in clinical settings. Objective: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a major cause of disability-adjusted life years in young adults. Pregnancy complications have previously been associated with BD. The current study aimed to examine the association between perinatal factors and BD., Methods: We included 3,794 subjects from the 1993 Pelotas population-based birth cohort study. We assessed 27 variables at birth and modeled BD onset at 18 and 22 years. Bivariate analysis was performed by means of binomial logistic regression models. The variables with p-values less than 0.05 were included in a multiple regression with confounders., Results: Maternal smoking was associated with a 1.42-fold increased risk of BD at 18 or 22 years old (95%CI 1.091-1.841), and maternal passive exposure to tobacco with a 1.43-fold increased risk (95%CI 1.086-1.875). No association was found between other perinatal factors and BD after controlling for confounders., Conclusion: The results of the present cohort study corroborate previous reports in the literature indicating a negative effects of maternal smoking during pregnancy. Background: Given the growing focus on deprescribing, it is crucial to thoroughly evaluate our benzodiazepine prescribing practices considering the potential risks., Aim: To investigate the prevalence and predictors of benzodiazepine prescriptions during psychiatric hospitalization and as discharge medication., Method: This retrospective electronic patient file study included psychiatric admissions at the UMC Utrecht between 12/01/01 and 21/04/01. Descriptive statistics were used to evaluate prevalence of benzodiazepine prescriptions in youth and adults. Multivariate regression analyses were performed to predict factors associated with benzodiazepine prescriptions and dosage., Results: In total, we analyzed data from 856 admissions of youth and 4002 admissions of adults. 36.0% of the youth were prescribed benzodiazepines during admission and 14.8% at discharge. Associated factors were age (OR: 1.38) and bipolar disorder (OR: 3.98). In adults, 69.7% were prescribed benzodiazepines during admission and 37.6% at discharge. Associated factors were length of hospital stay (OR: 1.01) and anxiety disorders (OR: 2.53). Male sex, age (resp. higher and lower), and a longer length of stay predicted benzodiazepine dosages for both youth (B = 3.48; 95% CI: 0.83-0.07) and adults (B = 2.17; 95% CI: -0.04-0.05)., Conclusion: Benzodiazepines are frequently prescribed during inpatient stays and at discharge in youth and adults, offering opportunities for deprescribing.

Background and Hypothesis: To clarify whether the familial liability to psychosis associated with bipolar disorder (BD) is nonspecific or has a greater effect on risk for psychosis in cases with prominent mood symptoms and/or a remitting course., Study Design: We examined, in 984 809 offspring raised in intact families in Sweden, born 1980-1996 and followed-up through 2018, by multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression, risk in offspring of parents with BD for 7 psychotic disorders: Psychotic MD (PMD), psychotic BD (PBD), schizoaffective disorder (SAD), acute psychoses, psychosis NOS, delusional disorder (DD) and schizophrenia (SZ). Diagnoses were obtained from national registers., Study Results: In the offspring of BD parents, the hazard ratios (HR) for these 7 disorders formed an inverted U-shaped curve, rising from 2.98 for PMD, to peak at 4.49 for PBD and 5.25 for SAD, and then declining to a HR of 3.48 for acute psychoses and 3.22 for psychosis NOS, to a low of 2.19 for DD and 2.33 for SZ. A similar pattern of risks was seen in offspring of mothers and fathers affected with BD and in offspring predicted from age at onset in their BD parent., Conclusions: The BD-associated risk for psychosis impacts most strongly on mood disorders, moderately on episodic psychotic syndromes, and least on chronic psychotic disorders. A systematic review aimed to investigate the association between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), its prevalence and incidence, potential factors associated with its occurrence and its impact on mortality among these patients. We performed the literature search in PubMed, Scopus and PsycInfo from inception to February 2022 and identified 19 studies: ten cross-sectional, 5 that included cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses, and 4 retrospective cohort studies. The reported prevalence of COPD ranged from 2.6% to 52.7% in patients with schizophrenia and between 3.0% and 12.9% in patients with bipolar disorder. Two studies reported an annual incidence of COPD of 2.21 cases/100 person-years in patients with schizophrenia and 2.03 cases/100 person-years in patients with bipolar disorder. Among the risk factors evaluated in three studies, only advanced age was consistently associated with the presence/occurrence of COPD in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder; the role of tobacco consumption was not investigated in those three studies. According to two studies, the likelihood of mortality from COPD showed an over 3-fold increase in patients with schizophrenia and a 2-fold increase in those with bipolar disorder compared to the overall population; COPD was also associated with increased inpatient mortality. Available data indicate that COPD in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder is a major public health problem. National and international health organizations should strive to specifically address this issue by creating awareness about this health problem and developing specific programs for screening and early intervention aimed to reduce the burden of COPD in these populations.

Background and Hypothesis: Suicide is a leading cause of death in youth and is often preceded by suicidal ideation (SI) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Identifying early markers of risk for SI and NSSI could improve timely identification of at-risk individuals., Study Design: Children (mean age 11.9, SD 0.2) at familial high risk of schizophrenia (N = 171), or bipolar disorder (N = 104), and controls (N = 174) were assessed for psychotic experiences (PE), SI, NSSI, and Axis I mental disorders in face-to-face interviews in early and middle childhood (age 7 and 11)., Study Results: Having 2 types of early childhood PE predicted middle childhood SI after accounting for previous SI, NSSI, and mental disorders (OR 2.8, 95% CI 1.1-6.9; P = .03). Two PE predicted NSSI (OR 3.0, 95% CI 1.2-7.7; P = .02) in excess of previous SI, NSSI, mental disorders, and familial risk. Persistent and incident PE predicted SI (OR 3.2, 95% CI, 1.1-8.8; P = .03; OR 3.8, 95% CI, 1.3-11.5; P = .02) in the fully adjusted model. Nineteen percent of children with persistent PE reported middle childhood SI vs 3.8% of those who never reported PE. In children with early childhood mental disorders, those who reported 2 PE had 4.4-fold increased odds of later SI (95% CI, 1.2-16.7; P = .03) after adjustments. PE were nondifferentially associated with outcomes across familial risk groups., Conclusions: Early childhood PE index elevated risk for subsequent SI and NSSI beyond what can be attributed to presence of mental disorders. Background: Despite the evidence supporting the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and severe mental disorders (SMD), the directionality of the associations between income or education and mental disorders is still poorly understood., Objective: To investigate the potential bidirectional causal relationships between genetic liability to the two main components of SES (income and educational attainment (EA)) on three SMD: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (BD) and depression., Methods: We performed a bidirectional, two-sample univariable Mendelian randomisation (UVMR) and multivariable Mendelian randomisation (MVMR) study using SES phenotypes (income, n=397 751 and EA, n=766 345) and SMD (schizophrenia, n=127 906; BD, n=51 710 and depression, n=500 119) genome-wide association studies summary-statistics to dissect the potential direct associations of income and EA with SMD., Findings: UVMR showed that genetic liability to higher income was associated with decreased risk of schizophrenia and depression, with a smaller reverse effect of schizophrenia and depression on income. Effects were comparable after adjusting for EA in the MVMR. UMVR showed bidirectional negative associations between genetic liability to EA and depression and positive associations between genetic liability to EA and BD, with no significant effects on schizophrenia. After accounting for income, MVMR showed a bidirectional positive direction between genetic liability to EA and BD and schizophrenia but not with depression., Conclusions: Our results suggest a heterogeneous link pattern between SES and SMD. We found a negative bidirectional association between genetic liability to income and the risk of schizophrenia and depression. Importance: Predicting the onset of bipolar disorder (BD) could facilitate preventive treatments. Among risk measures, bipolar at-risk (BAR) criteria have shown promise in predicting onset of bipolar disorder in the first year in clinical cohorts; however, it is not known whether BAR criteria are associated with the onset of BD in the longer term., Objective: To assess the association of BAR criteria with onset of BD over 10 to 13 years follow-up., Design, Setting, and Participants: This prospective cohort study, completed between May 1, 2020, and November 7, 2022, included consenting people seeking help for nonpsychotic major mental health difficulties, including mood, personality, and substance use disorders, who were originally recruited at ages 15 to 25 years from a tertiary youth mental health setting in metropolitan Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, from May 1, 2008, to September 30, 2010., Exposure: Meeting BAR criteria at baseline. Criteria included subthreshold mania, cyclothymic features, subthreshold depression, and family history of BD. A matched clinical comparison group was recruited from the same help-seeking population., Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was expert consensus diagnosis of BD I or II based on the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview, self-reported information collected through online assessments, and linked data on mental health service utilization in Victoria over 10 to 13 years of follow-up., Results: Among 69 eligible participants, follow-up data were available for 60 (88.2%). The mean (SD) age at the end of follow-up was 32.9 (2.8) years, and 49 (81.7%) were women. A total of 28 participants met BAR criteria, and 32 were in the comparison group. In the BAR group, 8 patients (28.6%) developed BD over a mean (SD) of 11.1 (0.7) years of follow-up, and no patients in the comparison group developed BD. The risk of developing BD was higher in the BAR group than in the non-BAR group (χ21 = 70.0; P < .001). The proportions of transitions to BD were equal in the first and second halves of the follow-up period., Conclusions and Relevance: In this cohort study of participants seeking care for mental health difficulties, patients meeting the BAR criteria were significantly more likely to transition to BD over a decade after ascertainment compared with patients not meeting the BAR criteria. The findings suggest that those meeting BAR criteria may benefit from longer-term monitoring and support. Evaluation of predictive properties in longer-term studies using a risk measure will help with implementation of BAR criteria in clinical settings.

Background: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a mental disorder characterized by mood shifts from severe depression to mania. Pregnant women with BD may experience manic or depressive episodes, so they are usually concerned about the effects of BD on their pregnancy. The aim of this systematic review is to determine the effects of BD on maternal health and fetal health, weight, and development. It also addresses how BD affects the probability of incidence of pregnancy complications in women with bipolar compared with healthy controls., Methods: Seven electronic databases (Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, MIDRIS, APA PsychINFO, Scopus, Web of Science, and ScienceOpen) were searched, and 1728 eligible studies were identified. After deduplication, screening, and manual search processes, we included only 15 studies. Descriptive analysis, and calculation of the probability of incidence for each pregnancy outcome were used to analyze the results., Results: The findings of the included studies suggest that BD during pregnancy may affect both fetal growth and maternal health by increasing the risk of giving birth to an infant with some birth defects such as microcephaly, CNS problems, small for gestational age, and other congenital anomalies, in addition to causing some obstetric complications such as gestational hypertension, preterm labor, need for assisted delivery, hospital readmission, and others., Conclusion: Bipolar disorder during pregnancy negatively affects mothers and their fetuses and increases the probability of incidence of obstetrics complications., (© 2023. Introduction: There are numerous reports of a higher prevalence of metabolic disorders in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (BD), yet its connections to diet and physical activity remain not fully explained. This article aimed to evaluate diet, physical activity and selected biochemical and anthropometric parameters associated with metabolism in patients with schizophrenia and BD and to analyse the relationships between these variables in the subjects., Materials and Methods: A total of 126 adults participated in the study: 47 patients with schizophrenia, 54 patients with BD and 25 patients in mental illness remission (reference group). Data were collected on the underlying illness and concomitant illnesses, and the severity of symptoms of the current episode was assessed using the following scales: PANSS, MADRS and YMRS. An assessment of the subjects' diet (KomPAN questionnaire) and their physical activity (International Physical Activity Questionnaire) was carried out. Anthropometric and blood pressure measurements were taken and BMI and WHR were calculated. Serum concentrations of fasting glucose, TSH, total cholesterol, LDL and HDL fractions, triglycerides and leptin, ghrelin and resistin were determined. For statistical analysis, the significance level was set at 0.05. For multiple comparisons one way ANOVA or Kruskal Wallis were used with post hoc Tukey and Dunn tests, respectively. To determine correlation of variables, Pearson's linear correlation coefficient or Spearman's rank correlation coefficient were used., Results: A total of 50.8% of the subjects had at least one metabolic disorder-most commonly excessive body weight (66.7%) and abdominal obesity (64.3%). Patients did not differ significantly in terms of physical activity, but they did differ in mean time spent sitting-with this being significantly longer for all groups than in the general population. The subjects differed in diet: patients with BD consumed less unhealthy foods than patients with schizophrenia. The highest correlations between physical activity, diet and variables defining metabolic disorders were found in patients with BD. Only in patients with schizophrenia were there significant correlations between the course of the disease and physical activity., Discussion: The results suggest the existence of associations between diet, physical activity, and metabolic disorders in both BD and schizophrenia patients. Objective: To compare cardiovascular and mortality outcomes in people with severe mental illness (SMI) versus no mental illness in a national cohort study of people with type 2 diabetes., Research Design and Methods: We included adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes between 2004 and 2018 from the national Scottish diabetes register, ascertaining history of mental illness from linked psychiatric and general hospital admission records. We identified major cardiovascular disease (CVD) events, all-cause mortality, and CVD-specific mortality through record linkage. Using Cox regression, we estimated hazard ratios (HRs) for associations between SMI and outcomes, adjusting for baseline sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, including history of CVD, comorbidity, hypertension, high cholesterol, HbA1c, BMI, alcohol use disorder, and smoking., Results: Among 259,875 people with type 2 diabetes, 1.0%, 0.5%, and 3.0% had schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression, respectively. After adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, the risk of major CVD events was higher in people with schizophrenia (HR 1.22, 95% CI 1.06-1.41), bipolar disorder (HR 1.58, 95% CI 1.33-1.87), and major depression (HR 1.59, 95% CI 1.49-1.70) compared with people without a history of mental illness. SMI was also associated with an approximately twofold increased risk of CVD-specific and all-cause mortality. All associations attenuated following further adjustment for clinical characteristics., Conclusions: Among people with diabetes, people with a history of SMI have poorer cardiovascular and mortality outcomes compared with those without mental illness. Depression is a common psychiatric disorder and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Here we conducted a genome-wide association study meta-analysis of six datasets, including >1.3 million individuals (371,184 with depression) and identified 243 risk loci. Overall, 64 loci were new, including genes encoding glutamate and GABA receptors, which are targets for antidepressant drugs. Intersection with functional genomics data prioritized likely causal genes and revealed new enrichment of prenatal GABAergic neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocyte lineages. We found depression to be highly polygenic, with ~11,700 variants explaining 90% of the single-nucleotide polymorphism heritability, estimating that >95% of risk variants for other psychiatric disorders (anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were influencing depression risk when both concordant and discordant variants were considered, and nearly all depression risk variants influenced educational attainment. Additionally, depression genetic risk was associated with impaired complex cognition domains. We dissected the genetic and clinical heterogeneity, revealing distinct polygenic architectures across subgroups of depression and demonstrating significantly increased absolute risks for recurrence and psychiatric comorbidity among cases of depression with the highest polygenic burden, with considerable sex differences. The risks were up to 5- and 32-fold higher than cases with the lowest polygenic burden and the background population, respectively. Background: Bipolar affective disorder (BAD) is a common severe mental health condition with a relapsing course that may include periods of hospital re-admissions. With recurrent relapses and admissions, the course, prognosis, and patient's overall quality of life can be affected negatively. This study aims to explore the rates and clinical factors associated with re-admission among individuals with BAD., Method: This study used data from a retrospective chart review of all records of patients with BAD admitted in 2018 and followed up their hospital records for four years till 2021 at a large psychiatric unit in Uganda. Cox regression analysis was used to determine the clinical characteristics associated with readmission among patients diagnosed with BAD., Results: A total of 206 patients living with BAD were admitted in 2018 and followed up for four years. The average number of months to readmission was 9.4 (standard deviation = 8.6). The incidence of readmission was 23.8% (n = 49/206). Of those readmitted during the study period, 46.9% (n = 23/49) and 28.6% (n = 14/49) individuals were readmitted twice and three times or more, respectively. The readmission rate in the first 12 months following discharge was 69.4% (n = 34/49) at first readmission, 78.3% (n = 18/23) at second readmission, and 87.5% (n = 12/14) at third or more times. For the next 12 months, the readmission rate was 22.5% (n = 11/49) for the first, 21.7% (n = 5/23) for the second, and 7.1% (n = 1/14) for more than two readmissions. Between 25 and 36 months, the readmission rate was 4.1% (n = 2/49) for the first readmission and 7.1% (n = 1/14) for the third or more times. Between 37 and 48 months, the readmission rate was 4.1% (n = 2/49) for those readmitted the first time. Patients who presented with poor appetite and undressed in public before admission were at increased risk of being readmitted with time. However, the following symptoms/clinical presentations, were protective against having a readmission with time, increased number of days with symptoms before admission, mood lability, and high energy levels., Conclusion: The incidence of readmission among individuals living with BAD is high, and readmission was associated with patients' symptoms presentation on previous admission. Future studies looking at BAD using a prospective design, standardized scales, and robust explanatory model are warranted to understand causal factors for hospital re-admission and inform management strategies., (© 2023. Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic and recurrent disorder characterized by biphasic mood episodes of mania or hypomania and depression. It affects more than 1% of the global population and is a leading cause of disability in young people. Currently available treatments for BD are still fairly limited in terms of efficacy, with high rates of non-adherence, non-response, and undesirable side effects. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a long history and rich experience in stabilizing mania and improving quality of life. Aiming at rebalancing and in BD, therapy of replenishing and regulating (RYRY therapy) has been in clinical use for years in China. The present prospective, double-blind, randomized controlled trial is designed to investigate the efficacy and safety of RYRY therapy for bipolar mania and its possible mechanism from the point of regulating gut microbiota and anti-inflammation. A total of 60 eligible participants will be recruited from Beijing Anding Hospital. They will be randomized to either the study group or the control group in a ratio of 1∶1. Participants allocated to the study group will receive RYRY granule, while placebo granule will be applied in the control group. Participants in both groups will be prescribed conventional therapy for manic episode in BD. Four scheduled visits will be conducted over 4 weeks. Outcome measurements include Young Mania Rating Scale, TCM Symptom Pattern Rating Scale, Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale, levels of C-reactive protein, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α and the gut microbial community profile of stool samples. Safety outcomes and adverse events will also be recorded. In this study, we set a number of scientific and objective assessments to evaluate the efficacy of RYRY therapy and study into its possible mechanism, hopefully offering clinicians an alternative approach to BD.

Bidirectional relationship between sleep disturbances and affective disorders is increasingly recognised, but its underlying mechanisms are far from clear, and there is a scarcity of studies that report on sleep disturbances in recurrent depressive disorder (RDD) and bipolar affective disorder (BPAD). To address this, we conducted a retrospective study of polysomnographic and clinical records of patients presenting to a tertiary sleep disorders clinic with affective disorders. Sixty-three BPAD patients (32 female; mean age ± S.D.: 41.8 ± 12.4 years) and 126 age- and gender-matched RDD patients (62 female; 41.5 ± 12.8) were studied. Whilst no significant differences were observed in sleep macrostructure parameters between BPAD and RDD patients, major differences were observed in comorbid sleep and physical disorders, both of which were higher in BPAD patients. Two most prevalent sleep disorders, namely obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) (BPAD 50.8.0% vs RDD 29.3%, P = 0.006) and insomnia (BPAD 34.9% vs RDD 15.0%, P = 0.005) were found to be strongly linked with BPAD. In summary, in our tertiary sleep clinic cohort, no overt differences in the sleep macrostructure between BPAD and RDD patients were demonstrated. However, OSA and insomnia, two most prevalent sleep disorders, were found significantly more prevalent in patients with BPAD, by comparison to RDD patients. Also, BPAD patients presented with significantly more severe OSA, and with higher overall physical co-morbidity. Background: Psychotic symptoms are prevalent in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). However, nearly all previous studies on differences in sociodemographic and clinical factors between patients with (BD P +) and without (BD P-) psychotic symptoms were conducted in Western populations, and limited information is known in China., Method: A total of 555 patients with BD from seven centers across China were recruited. A standardized procedure was used to collect patients' sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. The patients were divided into BD P + or BD P- groups based on the presence of lifetime psychotic symptoms. Mann-Whitney U test or chi-square test was used to analyze differences in sociodemographic and clinical factors between patients with BD P + and BD P-. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to explore factors that were independently correlated with psychotic symptoms in BD. All the above analyses were re-conducted after the patients were divided into BD I and BD II group according to their types of diagnosis., Results: A total of 35 patients refused to participate, and the remaining 520 patients were included in the analyses. Compared with patients with BD P-, those with BD P + were more likely to be diagnosed with BD I and mania/hypomania/mixed polarity in the first mood episode. Moreover, they were more likely to be misdiagnosed as schizophrenia than major depressive disorder, were hospitalized more often, used antidepressants less frequently, and used more antipsychotics and mood stabilizers. Multivariate analyses revealed that diagnosis of BD I, more frequent misdiagnosis as schizophrenia and other mental disorders, less frequent misdiagnosis as major depressive disorder, more frequent lifetime suicidal behavior, more frequent hospitalizations, less frequent use of antidepressants, more frequent use of antipsychotics and mood stabilizers were independently correlated with psychotic symptoms in BD. After dividing the patients into BD I and BD II groups, we observed notable differences in sociodemographic and clinical factors, as well as clinicodemographic correlates of psychotic features between the two groups., Conclusions: Differences in clinical factors between patients with BD P + and BD P- showed cross-cultural consistency, but results on the clinicodemographic correlates of psychotic features were not. Notable differences between patients with BD I and BD II were found. Aims: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of deaths globally. Mortality and incidence of CVDs are significantly higher in people with mood disorders. About 81.1% of CVD patients were reported with comorbidities in 2019, where the second most common comorbidity was due to major depressive disorder (MDD). This study, therefore, aimed to evaluate the genetic correlation between CVDs and mood disorders by using data from the UK Biobank towards understanding the influence of genetic factors on the comorbidity due to CVDs and mood disorders., Methods: The UK Biobank database provides genetic and health information from half a million adults, aged 40-69 years, recruited between 2006 and 2010. A total of 117,925 participants and 6,128,294 variants were included for analysis after applying exclusion criteria and quality control steps. This study focused on two CVD phenotypes, two mood disorders and 12 cardiometabolic-related traits to conduct association studies., Results: The results indicated a significant positive genetic correlation between CVDs and overall mood disorders and MDD specifically, showing substantial genetic overlap. Genetic correlation between CVDs and bipolar disorder was not significant. Furthermore, significant genetic correlation between mood disorders and cardiometabolic traits was also reported., Conclusions: The results of this study can be used to understand that CVDs and mood disorders share a great deal of genetic liability in individuals of European ancestry.
