Abstract

We have designed and implemented an experiment to measure the angular distributions and the energy spectra of the transition radiation X-rays emitted by fast electrons and positrons crossing different radiators. Our experiment was selected among the proposals of the 2021 Beamline for Schools contest, a competition for high-school students organized every year by CERN and DESY, and was performed at the DESY II Test Beam facility area TB21, using a high-purity beam of electrons or positrons with momenta in the range from 1 to 6 GeV/c. The measurements were performed using a 100 um thick silicon pixel detector, with a pitch of 55 um. Abstract

We report a detailed analysis of magneto-transport properties of top- and back-gated LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures. Efficient modulation in magneto-resistance, carrier density, and mobility of the two-dimensional electron liquid present at the interface is achieved by sweeping top and back gate voltages. Analyzing those changes with respect to the carrier density tuning, we observe that the back gate strongly modifies the electron mobility while the top gate mainly varies the carrier density. The evolution of the spin-orbit interaction is also followed as a function of top and back gating., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Elastic scattering of photons from 12C has been investigated using quasi-monoenergetic tagged photons with energies in the range 65 - 115 MeV at laboratory angles of 60 deg, 120 deg, and 150 deg at the Tagged-Photon Facility at the MAX IV Laboratory in Lund, Sweden. Abstract

We probe the real space electronic response to a local magnetic impurity in isovalent and heterovalent doped BaFe2As2 (122) using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The local moments carried by Mn impurities doped into Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2(Co-122) and BaFe(As1-xPx)2(P-122) at optimal doping induce a spin polarization in the vicinity of the impurity. The amplitude, shape and extension of this polarisation is given by the real part of the susceptibility chi'(r) of FeAs layers, and is consequently related to the nature and strength of the electronic correlations present in the system. We study this polarisation using 75As NMR in Co-122 and both 75As and 31P NMR in P-122. The NMR spectra of Mn-doped materials is made of two essential features. First is a satellite line associated with nuclei located as nearest neighbor of Mn impurities. The analysis of the temperature dependence of the shift of this satellite line shows that Mn local moments behave as isolated Curie moments. The second feature is a temperature dependent broadening of the central line. We show that the broadening of the central line follows the susceptibility of Mn local moments, as expected from typical RKKY-like interactions. This demonstrates that the susceptibility chi'(r) of FeAs layers does not make significant contribution to the temperature dependent broadening of the central line. chi'(r) is consequently only weakly temperature dependent in optimally doped Co-122 and P-122. This behaviour is in contrast with that of strongly correlated materials such as underdoped cuprate high-Tc superconductors where the central line broadens faster than the impurity susceptibility grows, because of the development of strong magnetic correlations when T is lowered. Moreover, the FeAs layer susceptibility is found quantitatively similar in both heterovalent doped and isolvalent doped BaFe2As2.

5. A semiquantitative approach to the impurity-band-related transport properties of GaMnAs nanolayers

Abstract

We investigate the spin-polarized transport of GaMnAs nanolayers in which a ferromagnetic order exists below a certain transition temperature. Our calculation for the self-averaged resistivity takes into account the existence of an impurity band determining the extended ("metallic" transport) or localized (hopping by thermal excitation) nature of the states at and near the Fermi level. Magnetic order and resistivity are inter-related due to the influence of the spin polarization of the impurity band and the effect of the Zeeman splitting on the mobility edge. We obtain, for a given range of Mn concentration and carrier density, a "metallic" behavior in which the transport by extended carriers dominates at low temperature, and is dominated by the thermally excited localized carriers near and above the transition temperature. This gives rise to a conspicuous hump of the resistivity which has been experimentally observed and brings light onto the relationship between transport and magnetic properties of this material.

Abstract

A self-consistent calculation of the density of states and the spectral density function is performed in a two-dimensional spin-polarized hole system based on a multiple-scattering approximation. Using parameters corresponding to GaMnAs thin layers, a wide range of Mn concentrations and hole densities have been explored to understand the nature, localized or extended, of the spin-polarized holes at the Fermi level for several values of the average magnetization of the Mn ystem. We show that, for a certain interval of Mn and hole densities, an increase on the magnetic order of the Mn ions come together with a change of the nature of the states at the Fermi level. This fact provides a delocalization of spin-polarized extended states anti-aligned to the average Mn magnetization, and a higher spin-polarization of the hole gas. These results are consistent with the occurrence of ferromagnetism with relatively high transition temperatures observed in some thin film samples and multilayered structures of this material., Comment: 3 pages

Abstract

The occurrence of inhomogeneous spin-density distribution in multilayered ferromagnetic diluted magnetic semiconductor nanostructures leads to strong dependence of the spin-polarized transport properties on these systems. The spin-dependent mobility, conductivity and resistivity in (Ga,Mn)As/GaAs,(Ga,Mn)N/GaN, and (Si,Mn)/Si multilayers are calculated as a function of temperature, scaled by the average magnetization of the diluted magnetic semiconductor layers. An increase of the resistivity near the transition temperature is obtained. Abstract

A self-consistent electronic structure calculation based on the Luttinger-Kohn model is performed on GaMnAs/GaAs multilayers. The Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor layers are assumed to be metallic and ferromagnetic. The high Mn concentration (considered as 5% in our calculation) makes it possible to assume the density of magnetic moments as a continuous distribution, when treating the magnetic interaction between holes and the localized moment on the Mn(++) sites. Our calculation shows the distribution of heavy holes and light holes in the structure. A strong spin-polarization is observed, and the charge is concentrated mostly on the GaMnAs layers, due to heavy and light holes with their total angular momentum aligned anti-parallel to the average magnetization. The charge and spin distributions are analyzed in terms of their dependence on the number of multilayers, the widths of the GaMnAs and GaAs layers, and the width of lateral GaAs layers at the borders of the structure., Comment: 12 pages,7 figures

Abstract

The magnetic order resulting from an indirect exchange between magnetic moments provided by spin-polarized hole gas in the metallic phase of a GaMnAs double layer structure is studied via Monte Carlo simulation. The coupling mechanism involves a perturbative calculation in second order of the interaction between the magnetic moments and carriers (holes). We take into account a possible polarization of the hole gas due to the existence of an average magnetization in the magnetic layers, establishing, in this way, a self-consistency between the magnetic order and the electronic structure. That interaction leads to an internal ferromagnetic order inside each layer, and a parallel arrangement between their magnetizations, even in the case of thin layers. Abstract

Wine can be considered a niche product on the drinks market, due to the annual turnover it generates and the dispersion of the productive matrix which controls its production. However, it takes on a symbolic value compared to other drinks and boasts a unique link with the territory. Typicity translated into territorial values has brought about the success of winemaking regions of great national and international fame. However, it is necessary to communicate the values and adopt the consequent measures for other areas in a secondary position or with an intermediate development. The value of wine ex-cellar, unbottled and before vat has been analyzed taking into account production in different market segments, a basic element for estimating the value of the GSP per hectare of vineyard. This paper is based on the study of physical, economic and motivational parameters that determine the primary value, the cause for consolidating or abandoning winegrowing. Decisions made by the vinegrower translate into nursery demand which, in turn, determines the varieties and surface areas of the future vineyard.

Abstract

Recent dynamical fusion models for weakly bound nuclei at low incident energies, based on a time-dependent perspective, are briefly presented. The main features of both the PLATYPUS model and a new quantum approach are highlighted. In contrast to existing timedependent quantum models, the present quantum approach separates the complete and incomplete fusion from the total fusion. Calculations performed within a toy model for 6Li + 209Bi at near-barrier energies show that converged excitation functions for total, complete and incomplete fusion can be determined with the time-dependent wavepacket dynamics.

26. An inhibitor of the proteasomal deubiquitinating enzyme USP14 induces tau elimination in cultured neurons

Abstract

© 2017 by The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc. The ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) is responsible for most selective protein degradation in eukaryotes and regulates numerous cellular processes, including cell cycle control and protein quality control. A component of this system, the deubiquitinating enzyme USP14, associates with the proteasome where it can rescue substrates from degradation by removal of the ubiquitin tag. We previously found that a small-molecule inhibitor of USP14, known as IU1, can increase the rate of degradation of a subset of proteasome substrates. We report here the synthesis and characterization of 87 variants of IU1, which resulted in the identification of a 10-fold more potent USP14 inhibitor that retains specificity for USP14. The capacity of this compound, IU1-47, to enhance protein degradation in cells was tested using as a reporter the microtubule-associated protein tau, which has been implicated in many neurodegenerative diseases. Using primary neuronal cultures, IU1-47 was found to accelerate the rate of degradation of wild-type tau, the pathological tau mutants P301L and P301S, and the A152T tau variant. We also report that a specific residue in tau, lysine 174, is critical for the IU1-47–mediated tau degradation by the proteasome. Finally, we show that IU1-47 stimulates autophagic flux in primary neurons. In summary, these findings provide a powerful research tool for investigating the complex biology of USP14.

Abstract

The physiological alterations as well as the growth were evaluated in seedlings of two liana species, Cuspidaria sceptrum and Fridericia florida, which were transferred from shade to full sunlight conditions. We cultivated one group of seedlings under full sunlight, the second group under natural shade beneath canopy, and the third group was transferred from shade to full sunlight. Reductions on the potential quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm) during predawn was detected under full sunlight, but these responses were more pronounced when the plants were transferred from shade to full sunlight. C. cuspidaria lost all leaves developed under shade a few days after transfer. However, at 60 d after transfer, new leaves were already developed and their Fv/Fm values were similar to full sunlight plants. F. florida was able to maintain its leaves after transfer and exhibited gradual recovery of Fv/Fm over time. Abstract

The objective of the European Vitis Database is to safeguard and enhance germplasm by monitoring its preservation. Two issues are strongly related to that purpose: (1) participation of collections covering almost all grape biodiversity and (2) assessment of accessions trueness to type. In the scope of the European project GrapeGen06 efforts have been made towards both objectives. The 35 participating grape germplasm repositories are found between the Iberian Peninsula and Transcaucasia, thus covering a broad range of grape diversity. Altogether they maintain 32,410 accessions. However with respect to biodiversity, gaps are still evident and further collections need to be included and trueness to type assessment absolutely needs to be pursued to organize duplication of endangered genotypes. Within the GrapeGen06 project focus was laid on the establishment of a database conferring the collection holders a high degree of responsibility and independence. Hence for the first time in a European Central Crop Database an on-line uploading application and an interactive modification system for data administration was implemented. These innovations disburden the database manager and offer the curators of collections more flexibility. Abstract

International audience; Since 2007, research institutes and grapevine collections from 17 countries of Europe, Caucasus and North Africa are working together for the conservation, characterization and management of grapevine genetic resources. The initial work consisted in inventorying and describing the varieties in the partners’ collections, using standardized morphological, agronomic, and molecular descriptors, and to link the information into a unique European web-database. The growing database contains today passport data from 25.000 living accessions, of which 2.500 are linked to photos and 1.600 are characterized for 48 OIV descriptors and 9 microsatellite markers. The project is also working on 448 old autochthonous varieties that have presented a regional interest in the past but are not clearly identified. Comparing their microsatellite fingerprint with the total database will enable us to find if they are original resources and to uniquely define their traits. The database website is open for consultation, with different levels of access that allows indept searches but also confidentiality, according to the user needs. At the end of 2010, the fingerprint data will also be online, so that other collections or professionals can check their own varieties against the referenced varieties to verify names and true-to-typeness. The final objective of the European project is to promote an optimized conservation scheme of the Vitis germplasm, involving ex-situ, cryo- and on-farm conservation, so that the resources are permanently maintained, easily accessible and field-tested in a pertinent agricultural context. This network of resources will also provide plant material as a basis for biotechnology, genomic and breeding research.; Depuis 2007, les institutes de recherche et les collections de vigne de 17 pays d’Europe, du Caucase et d’Afrique du Nord collaborent pour la conservation, la caractérisation et la gestion des ressources génétiques de vigne. Fin 2010, les données moléculaires seront également publiques, permettant aux professionnels de vérifier la conformité de leurs variétés. 3 L’objectif final du projet européen est de promouvoir un schéma optimal de conservation des ressources de vigne, impliquant conservation ex-situ, la cryo-preservation et la conservation à la ferme, pour pérenniser les ressources de vigne, les rendre facilement accessibles et les tester dans leur contexte agricole. Ce réseau de ressources fournira également le matériel de base pour la recherché en biotechnologie, génomique et sélection.; Dal 2007, gli istituti di ricerca e le collezioni di vite di 17 paesi d’Europa, del Caucaso e del Nord-Africa collaborano per la conservazione, la caratterizzazione e la gestione delle risorse genetiche della vite. Inizialmente, il lavoro ha consistito nell’inventario e la descrizione delle varietà delle collezioni partner, utilizzando descrittori morfologici, agronomici e molecolari standardizzati, le cui informazioni sono poi inserite in un unico database Europeo. Il database sta crescendo e contiene oggi i dati passaporto di 25.000 varietà viventi, di cui 2.500 sono descritte da foto e 1.600 da 48 descrittori OIV e 9 marcatori microsatelliti. Il progetto sta inoltre lavorando su 448 antiche varietà autoctone che hanno presentato un interesse regionale nel passato, ma che sono mal identificate. Comparare il loro profilo genetico con il database permetterà di determinare la loro originalità e di definire inequivocabilmente le loro caratteristiche. Il database e’ accessibile al pubblico, e prevede diversi livelli di accesso permettendo una ricerca approfondita e allo stesso tempo la confidentialità, secondo i bisogni degli utilizzatori. Alla fine del 2010, la base dei marcatori molecolari sarà ugualmente aperta, permettendo cosi’ ai professionisti di verificare la conformità delle loro varietà. L’obiettivo finale del progetto europeo e’ di organizzare uno schema ottimale di conservazione delle risorse di Vitis, facendo ricorso a metodi ex-situ, di crio-preservazione e conservazione in fattoria, permettendo la perenizzazione delle risorse, rendendole facilmente accessibili e analizzandole nel contesto agricolo. Questa rete di collaborazione potrà anche provvedere materiale di base per la ricerca in biotecnologia, genomica e selezione.

Abstract

During the period 1999 to 2007, numerous field trials were carried out in the Emilia Romagna region in order to test the efficacy of Cydia pomonella Granulosis Virus-based (CpGV) products in controlling codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.). The trial results demonstrate that CpGV-based products can be considered among the best larvicides currently available on the market. Good results were achieved against I generation larvae, while applications against successive generations did not always provide satisfactory control.

Microsatellite (MS) VVMD21 (BOWERS et al. 1999) was taken as a model to explore the molecular basis of polymorphism in a panel of 6 grapevine accessions (Vitis vinifera L.), consisting of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon and 4 F1 plants derived from crossing both varieties. The 12 alleles of both parents and the progeny were cloned and sequenced. The microsatellite repeat (AG)n>6 was found in each sequence, together with a poly-T rich region that showed irregularity. Abstract

We report a detailed analysis of magneto-transport properties of top- and back-gated LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures. Efficient modulation in magneto-resistance, carrier density, and mobility of the two-dimensional electron liquid present at the interface is achieved by sweeping top and back gate voltages. Analyzing those changes with respect to the carrier density tuning, we observe that the back gate strongly modifies the electron mobility while the top gate mainly varies the carrier density. The evolution of the spin-orbit interaction is also followed as a function of top and back gating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: To date, no consistent data are available on the possible impact of CFTR modulators on glucose metabolism. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that treatment with CFTR modulators is associated with an improvement in the key direct determinants of glucose regulation in children and young adults affected by Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Methods: In this study, 21 CF patients aged 10–25 underwent oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) before and after 12–18 months of treatment with Lumacaftor/Ivacaftor or Elexacaftor-Ivacaftor-Tezacaftor. β-cell function (i.e., first and second phase of insulin secretion measured as derivative and proportional control, respectively) and insulin clearance were estimated by OGTT mathematical modelling. Insulin sensitivity was estimated by the Oral Glucose Sensitivity Index (OGIS). The dynamic interplay between β-cell function, insulin clearance and insulin sensitivity was analysed by vector plots of glucose-stimulated insulin bioavailability vs. insulin sensitivity. Results: No changes in glucose tolerance occurred after either treatment, whereas a significant improvement in pulmonary function and chronic bacterial infection was observed. Beta cell function and insulin clearance did not change in both treatment groups. Insulin sensitivity worsened in the Lumacaftor/Ivacaftor group. The analysis of vector plots confirmed that glucose regulation was stable in both groups. Conclusions: Treatment of CF patients with CFTR modulators does not significantly ameliorate glucose homeostasis and/or any of its direct determinants.

Abstract

Major surgical societies advised using non-operative management of appendicitis and suggested against laparoscopy during the COVID-19 pandemic. The hypothesis is that a significant reduction in the number of emergent appendectomies was observed during the pandemic, restricted to complex cases. The study aimed to analyse emergent surgical appendectomies during pandemic on a national basis and compare it to the same period of the previous year. This is a multicentre, retrospective, observational study investigating the outcomes of patients undergoing emergent appendectomy in March–April 2019 vs March–April 2020. The primary outcome was the number of appendectomies performed, classified according to the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) score. Secondary outcomes were the type of surgical technique employed (laparoscopic vs open) and the complication rates. One thousand five hundred forty one patients with acute appendicitis underwent surgery during the two study periods. 1337 (86.8%) patients met the inclusion criteria: 546 (40.8%) patients underwent surgery for acute appendicitis in 2020 and 791 (59.2%) in 2019. According to AAST, patients with complicated appendicitis operated in 2019 were 30.3% vs 39.9% in 2020 (p = 0.001). We observed an increase in the number of post-operative complications in 2020 (15.9%) compared to 2019 (9.6%) (p 24 h after admission (+ 58%), open surgery (+ 112%) and conversion to open surgery (+ 166%). In Italian hospitals, in March and April 2020, the number of appendectomies has drastically dropped. During the first pandemic wave, patients undergoing surgery were more frequently affected by more severe appendicitis than the previous year's timeframe and experienced a higher number of complications. Abstract

An atmospheric pressure DC transferred arc twin torch thermal plasma system has been characterized by 3D simulation in order to assess its potential for the synthesis of Cu nanoparticles from solid precursors. The numerical model also takes into account the non-negligible effect on process temperature of radiative losses, transport and thermodynamic properties of Cu vapour. In the frame of design-oriented simulation and optimization of the synthesis process, mean diameter and yield of the synthetized nanoparticles have been investigated for different current levels, gas flow rates, precursor feed rates and nanoparticles model. Results show that evaporation efficiency is considerably high even at precursor feed rates up to 25 kg d-1, while the presence of vortices inside the chambers causes a significative loss of nanoparticles to the reactor walls, with a detrimental effect to the yield.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to compare the effects of different mechanisms underlying the synthesis of copper nanoparticles using an atmospheric pressure radio-frequency induction thermal plasma. A design oriented modelling approach was used to parametrically investigate trends and impact of different parameters on the synthesis process through a thermo-fluid dynamic model coupled with electromagnetic field equations for describing the plasma behaviour and a moment method for describing nanoparticles nucleation, growth and transport. The effect of radiative losses from Cu vapour on the precursor evaporation efficiency is highlighted, with occurrence of loading effect even with low precursor feed rate due to the decrease in plasma temperature. A method to model nanoparticle deposition on a porous wall is proposed, in which a sticking coefficient is employed to model particle sticking on the porous wall used to carry a quench gas flow into the chamber. Two different reaction chamber designs combined with different quench gas injection strategies (injection through a porous wall for “active” quenching; injection of a shroud gas for “passive” quenching) are analysed in terms of process yield and size distribution of the synthetized nanoparticles. Conclusion can be drawn on the characteristics of each quenching strategy in terms of throughput and mean diameter of the synthesized nanoparticles.

Abstract

Periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) is a disorder characterized by a cyclic pattern of motor phenomena and EEG changes (mostly arousals), both recurring at approximately 20- to 40-s intervals. The periodicity of the PLMS phenomena recalls the physiological EEG arousal rhythm of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep known as the cyclic alternating pattern (CAP). During CAP, arousals and arousal-equivalent features do not appear as isolated events but periodically intrude (phase A) between intervals of background EEG activity (phase B). Though the A phases can be expressed by a variety of EEG patterns, each with a different arousal impact on polygraphic parameters, overall CAP is a sequence of biphasic cycles reflecting a condition of unstable sleep. Twelve middle-aged PLMS subjects complaining of poor sleep were polygraphically compared with 12 age-matched and gender-matched healthy volunteers (controls). With respect to controls, the PLMS recordings showed an enhancement of the more powerful arousals and presented significantly increased amounts of CAP time (+45 min) and CAP rate (+15%). Of all the jerks detected in NREM sleep, 92% occurred in CAP, with the great majority of limb movements (96%) associated with phase A. Ninety-four percent of the nocturnal jerks coupled with phase A started jointly with the onset of the phase or when the latter had already begun. In particular, most of the myoclonic events (67%) occurred in the first 2.5 s of the A phase. The CAP cycles coupled with periodic movements were significantly longer than those without motor events (+6.4 s). Compared to the American Sleep Disorders Association's rules for scoring EEG arousals, the CAP framework offers a more extensive insight into PLMS. In effect, the present study indicates an entrainment of nocturnal myoclonus by means of CAP and sheds light on the complex interactions between arousal mechanisms and motor phenomena during sleep.
