Meta-analyses were performed for the mean change in intraocular pressure (IOP) at one-month, six-month, and one-year follow-up visits, rate of IOP spikes (> 5 mmHg increase from the pre-procedure baseline IOP), rate of treatment failure (< 20% or < 3 mmHg reduction in IOP or requiring additional medications or procedures), and mean change in number of medications. Results: Six studies, with a total of 593 eyes, were included: 283 underwent MLT, while 310 underwent SLT. A statistically significant difference in the efficacy of MLT versus SLT at one-month and six-month follow-ups was present, with SLT reducing IOP by 0.83 mmHg (95% CI: 0.20, 1.47; P = 0.01) more and 0.55 mmHg (95% CI: 0.02, 1.08; P = 0.04) more than MLT, respectively. At the one-year follow-up, there was no significant disparity in IOP reduction between SLT and MLT (WMD = 0.16; 95% CI: − 0.40, 0.71; P = 0.58). There was a significantly lower rate of IOP spikes in the MLT treatment group (RR = 0.37; 95% CI: 0.16, 0.89; P = 0.03). There was no statistically significant difference in the rate of treatment failures (RR = 1.05; 95% CI: 0.68, 1.62; P = 0.84) or number of topical medications reduced (WMD = 0.06; 95% CI: − 0.13, 0.26; P = 0.53).Conclusion: While SLT may offer greater short-term reductions in IOP, it may be associated with more postoperative IOP spikes when compared to MLT. At one-year follow-up, there were no significant differences in IOP reduction or failure rates between the MLT and SLT groups. Keywords: trabeculoplasty, micropulse, SLT, selective laser trabeculoplasty, glaucoma

- Abstract
Novel mixed matrix polymeric membranes were prepared by incorporating self-produced zinc oxide coated by polyaniline (ZnO-PANI) nanoparticles into polyethersulfone (PES) matrix using phase inversion method. Nanoparticles were synthesized, characterized and incorporated in PES matrix with loadings from 0.05 to 0.6 wt%. ZnO-PANI demonstrated effectiveness as a low-cost adsorbent, especially at a loading of 0.2 wt%. ZnO-PANI was used for adsorbing total phenolic compounds (TPC) from olive leaf extract (OLE) at different initial adsorbate concentration (49.92–466.59 mg/L) and pH (2−6). ZnO-PANI proved to be an effective and low-cost adsorbent to remove TPC from OLE. Langmuir model described the adsorption of TPC better than Freundlich model. Effect of incorporated nanoparticles on membranes morphology and hydrophilic properties studied using contact angle measurement, water content, membrane pore size and porosity, SEM, FTIR and pure water flux. Prepared membranes showed a significant increment in porosity, pore size and hydrophilicity by addition of ZnO-PANI in the casting solution up to 0.2 wt%. This led to a considerable improvement in permeability, which decreased with higher additive concentration. During OLE filtration tests (10–30 bar) using bare PES and 0.2 wt% ZnO-PANI/PES membranes, 0.2 wt% ZnO-PANI/PES showed the highest permeate flux and good TPC rejection (83–87%). Bare PES exhibited impressive TPC value rejections (85–92%) and better fouling resistance. Using 0.2 wt% ZnO-PANI achieved a balanced permeate flux and TPC rejection. The research emphasizes the practical applicability of these membranes in various industries due to their enhanced efficacy in removing phenolic compounds from natural extracts, offering a balanced approach between permeate flux and TPC rejection.

- Abstract
This study aims to recover the residual energy of the water in the water treatment plant using turbines instead of wasting energy in the dissipator as it is currently done by means of load- breaker valves. Analysis of the technical efficiency of the project and an assessment of the hydroelectric potential available were carried out and different options for the installation of turbines were proposed. The estimated maximum amount of energy that can be recovered is around 7.44 GWh, and the maximum amount of carbon emissions saved are 446.210 tons.

The measurement based on the vision of periodic patterns by a remote camera is a more suitable solution for the control and characterization of micro robotic systems. In this way, we can take precise measurements without disturbing the measured objects and without the need for more devices and sensors that cause great confusion and clutter around the workspace. The technique of projection of the coded periodic patterns is perhaps effective and of good performance and especially in the case of a well calibrated system. Indeed, the question arises on the influence of the calibration on the results of measurement by this technique in terms of precision and uncertainty. Thus, the main purpose of this article is to study the influence of calibration on the measurement process, by deducing and calculating the committed error and the uncertainty rate. Based on an algorithm in MATLAB, we first create a coded periodic test pattern to which we apply a certain imposed displacement. Then, we project this pattern using a projection and reduction system on a digital camera which captures a photo and transmits it to a processing algorithm, which, in turn, calculates and deduces a value for the measured displacement. The repetition of this process occurs several times on the same imposed displacement (the same standard) to provide us with several measured values, this redundancy of the data allows us to draw a calibration curve and deduce several metrological parameters from our system of measure. - Abstract
Given the importance of olive oil as a food product worldwide and given the exposure of many productive olive orchards to many pollution sources, this work is a contribution to the clarification of atmospheric metal pollution effects on the quality of olive oil and its possible toxicity for human beings. This work is carried out on olive orchards (Olea europaea L., cv. Chemlali) situated in a polluted region close to a fertilizer factory and in a controlled, unpolluted area, managed with comparable cultivation techniques during two successive years (2015/2016 and 2016/2017). Pollution negatively affects the oxidative stability and nutritional value of olive oil, especially by decreasing the contents of antioxidant compounds and the fatty acid composition. Atmospheric metals are confirmed to have a negative effect on olive oil chemicals; oils show a disruption of their squalene, tocopherols, and triglyceride composition in comparison with control oils. Practical Applications: This study is carried out in two olive orchards (Olea europaea L., cv. Chemlali) located in a polluted area near a fertilizer factory and in a control unpolluted site, managed with similar cultivation techniques. The aim is to investigate the physiological and biochemical responses of polluted oils (PO), exposed to atmospheric metal contamination as compared to control oils (CO). The results of this study emanate from the accidental exposure to contamination sources, such as the direct contact of olives, with an elevated polluted environment that might be made more severe by gaseous air pollutants emitted by the factory. Then, air contamination avoidance from factories should be examined together with any possible probable methodologies to decrease plant tissue contamination. The SIAPE is the main pollution source in Sfax city. Vegetation developed around the city is continuously exposed to air pollution. Therefore, olive fruits are contaminated by the chemical pollution which affects the qualit

The purpose of this study was to review the imaging and anatomopathologic findings and to discuss the main differential diagnosis of bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (BPOP) or Nora's lesion, a rare benign surface lesion of the bone. Histologically confirmed plain radiographs, ultrasound, CT and MRI images of four patients with BPOP were obtained and retrospectively reviewed. Three cases involving the hand and one involving the foot are reported. On plain radiographs, BPOP is a wellmarginated, calcified or ossified mass arising directly from the cortical surface of the underlying bone. Ultrasound images show a low echoic peripheral cap around the lesion. CT images show the wide base of the lesion. On MRI, BPOP was of a low signal on T1, enhancing following gadolinium administration. Underlying bone and adjacent surrounding soft tissues were normal.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare autoimmune disease (AID) with a complex genetic etiology. Evidence for a shared pathogenesis across AIDs is given by the well-known pleiotropism of autoimmune genes. Recently, several unbiased approaches have identified an association between polymorphisms of the CD2 gene, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) susceptibility. The objective of this study was to investigate whether CD2 polymorphisms are associated with SSc. Objective. Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare autoimmune disease (AID) with a complex genetic aetiology. Evidence for a shared pathogenesis across AIDs is given by the well-known pleiotropism of autoimmune genes. Recently, several unbiased approaches have identified an association between polymorphisms of the CD2 gene, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) susceptibility. The objective of this study was to investigate whether CD2 polymorphisms are associated with SSc.Methods. Two SNPs of CD2, rs624988 and rs798036, were genotyped in a total of 1,786 SSc patients and 2,360 healthy individuals from two European populations (France and Italy). Meta analyses were performed to assess whether an association exists between CD2 polymorphisms or haplotypes and SSc or its main subtypes.Results. The combined analyses revealed an association between the rs624988 A allele and SSc susceptibility: p(adj)=0.023, OR=1.14 (95%CI 1.04-1.25). Single marker analysis did not reveal any association between rs798036 and SSc. Haplotype analysis identified that the A-T haplotype, previously described in RA, was associated with higher susceptibility for SSc (p(adj)=0.029, OR=1.14, 95%CI 1.04-1.25) and with the positive anticentromere antibody sub-group of SSc patients (p(adj)=0.009, OR=1 95%CI 1.07-1.32). Genotype-mRNA expression correlations revealed that the CD2 risk haplotype was associated with decreased CD2 mRNA expression in SSc patients.Conclusion. Our study establishes CD2 as a new susceptibility factor for SSc, in a European Caucasian population, confirming the sharing of autoimmune risk factors by SSc and RA.

In this work, the thermal performance enhancement of a shallow solar pond (SSP) was verified theoretically. The SSP operates under the open cycle to extract heat in order to increase own efficiency. SSP was provided with two transparent glass covers to reduce heat loss and increase global warming. It was also coated with a heat insulation material; the bottom of the SSP is painted in black to improve the absorption of solar radiation. In order to enhance heat extraction, five types of nanofluids with different physical properties were passed through a heat exchanger in the form of a serpentine welded to the bottom of the SSP. Five types of metal nanoparticles such as Al
2 O3 , CuO, TiO2 , SiO2 , and Cu were mixed with pure water under various concentrations ranging from 0 to 5 % to obtain the nanofluids. A numerical model was developed based on the solution of thermal balance equations after discretization by using real meteorological conditions of the Medea city located in Algeria. The simulation was conducted on June 8 from 5 am to 6 am hours for the next day. The obtained results, including thermophysical properties, temperature of the pond and exergy performance, were presented and discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The present work investigated the effect of incorporating fresh spirulina as compared to dried spirulina into yoghurt, at three different concentrations (0.1%, 0.3% and 0.5%). The samples were analysed to determine the physicochemical, rheological and sensory properties, and viability of Streptococcus thermophilus during storage. Interrelationships between the parameters were investigated using the principal component analysis. Supplementing yoghurt with both spirulina forms increased the protein content, acidity, and apparent viscosity, and lessened the syneresis rate. The supplementation of fresh spirulina slightly reduced the viability of bacterium during the storage. Yoghurts fortified with fresh spirulina yielded different colour parameters, a low amount of protein, ash, and viscosity as compared to yoghurt supplemented with dried spirulina. Grouping the variables in the principal component analysis plot indicated that each yoghurt has specific characteristics. Panellists appreciated the yoghurt that was enriched with 0.3% of fresh spirulina more than other formulations and attributed the lowest score to appearance. Overall, it can be concluded that untreated spirulina can be exploited as a natural ingredient to develop novel yoghurt with high nutritional properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; Objective: Recognition of the well-known pleiotropism of autoimmune genes supports the concept of a shared pathogenesis across autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic sclerosis (SSc). Studies have reproducibly demonstrated an association between susceptibility to RA and polymorphisms of the CCR6 gene, a surface marker for Th17 cells, and the causal variant was recently identified. The present study was thus undertaken to investigate whether CCR6 polymorphisms could also be associated with susceptibility to SSc. Methods: Twelve tag single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of CCR6, including the known RA-associated SNP rs3093023, were genotyped in a total of 2,411 SSc patients and 7,084 healthy individuals from 3 European populations (France, Italy, and Germany). Meta-analyses of the data were performed to assess whether an association exists between CCR6 polymorphisms and susceptibility to SSc or its main subtypes. Direct sequencing of DNA was performed to ascertain whether the functional dinucleotide polymorphism of CCR6 previously identified in RA (CCR6DNP) was also present in SSc. Results: Combined analyses revealed an association between the rs10946216 SNP and SSc susceptibility (odds ratio [OR] 1.13, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.05-1.21, adjusted P [P-adj] = 0.026). The rs3093023 A allele and rs10946216 T allele were in high linkage disequilibrium, and both were found to confer disease susceptibility in the antitopoisomerase-positive subset of SSc patients (OR 1.27, 95% CI 1.13-1.42, P-adj = 1.5 x 10(-3) and OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.17-1.48, P-adj = 9.0 x 10(-5), respectively, relative to healthy controls). Direct sequencing of the DNA of 78 individuals supported the hypothesis that the regulatory dinucleotide CCR6DNP could be the causal variant in SSc. Conclusion: The results of this study establish CCR6 as a new susceptibility factor for antitopoisomerase-positive SSc, as demonstrated in 3 European Caucasian populations, confirming the notion that SSc and RA could conceivably share autoimmune risk alleles. The results also suggest a potential role of the interleukin-17 pathway in SSc.

Objective Several autoimmune disorders, including systemic sclerosis (SSc), are characterized by a strong sex bias. To date, it is not known whether genes on the sex chromosomes influence SSc susceptibility. Recently, an IRAK1 haplotype that contains the 196Phe functional variant (rs1059702), located on Xq28, was found to confer susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study was undertaken to test for an association between SSc and the IRAK1 SLE risk haplotype. Methods We tested for an association with the IRAK1 SLE risk haplotype in a discovery set of 849 SSc patients and 625 controls. IRAK1 rs1059702 was further genotyped in a replication set, which included Caucasian women from Italy (493 SSc patients and 509 controls) and Germany (466 SSc patients and 1,083 controls). Results An association between the IRAK1 haplotype and SSc was detected in the discovery set. In both the discovery and replication sets, the rs1059702 TT genotype was found to be associated with specific SSc subsets, highlighting a potential contribution to disease severity. A meta-analysis provided evidence of an association of both the T allele and TT genotype with the overall disease, with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.20 and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of 1.06–1.35 for the T allele (P = 0.003) and an OR of 1.49 and 95% CI of 1.06–2.10 for the TT genotype (P = 0.023). However, the most notable associations were observed with the diffuse cutaneous, anti–topoisomerase I antibody positive, and SSc-related fibrosing alveolitis subsets (OR 2.35 [95% CI 1.51–3.66], P = 1.56 × 10−4, OR 2.84 [95% CI 1.87–4.32], P = 1.07 × 10−6, and OR 2.09 [95% CI 1.35–3.24], P = 9.05 × 10−4, respectively). Conclusion Our study provides the first evidence of an association between IRAK1 and SSc, demonstrating that a sex chromosome gene directly influences SSc susceptibility and its phenotypic heterogeneity.

- Abstract
We report a case of anaplastic pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma occurred in a male of 13 years, who presented a syndrom of intracranial hypertension for a year and a half. CT-scan and MRI revealed a cystic and solid tumor in the left parietal lobe. The surgical resection was total. Histopathological examination demonstrated a pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma with malignant transformation. Seven months later, the patient has a deterioration of his general condition, the CT revealed a tumor recurrence, which was reoperated. The patient died a few days after surgery. This rare case of anaplastic pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma is presented, discussed and illustrated in this paper.

Introduction: Systemic sclerosis (SSc)-related pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) has emerged as a major mortality prognostic factor. Mutations of transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) receptor genes strongly contribute to idiopathic and familial PAH. Objective: To explore the genetic bases of SSc-PAH, we combined direct sequencing and genotyping of candidate genes encoding TGFβ receptor family members. Materials and methods: TGFβ receptor genes, BMPR2, ALK1, TGFR2 and ENG, were sequenced in 10 SSc-PAH patients, nine SSc and seven controls. In addition, 22 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of these four candidate genes were tested for association in a fi rst set of 824 French Caucasian SSc patients (including 54 SSc-PAH) and 939 controls. The replication set consisted of 1516 European SSc (including 219 SSc-PAH) and 3129 controls from the European League Against Rheumatism Scleroderma Trials and Research group network. Results: No mutation was identified by direct sequencing. However, two repertoried SNP, ENG rs35400405 and ALK1 rs2277382, were found in SSc-PAH patients only. The genotyping of 22 SNP including the latter showed that only rs2277382 was associated with SSc-PAH (p=0.0066, OR 2.13, 95% CI 1.24 to 3.65). Nevertheless, this was not replicated with the following result in combined analysis: p=0.123, OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.59 to 1.07. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the lack of association between these TGFβ receptor gene polymorphisms and SSc-PAH using both sequencing and genotyping methods.

SALINE water conversion ,REVERSE osmosis ,MEMBRANE distillation ,SALT ,SOLAR collectors ,OSMOTIC pressure - Abstract
Reverse osmosis (RO) desalination is widely used for drinking water production, because of its relatively low energy consumption. However, RO is limited in recovery ratio due to the osmotic pressure which increases with salinity. It results with high rejected brine volume inducing negative environmental impact. The aim of this work is to investigate the possibility of using solar vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) in an integrated RO desalination process in order to reduce brine discharge volume and increase RO global recovery ratio. A small RO desalination unit operated by solar energy in a real site in the Algerian desert is considered for the feasibility study. The obtained results proved that important permeate fluxes can be reached with RO coupled with VMD as the water recovery increased from 37% to nearly 87.5%. Brine volume can so be reduced by a factor of 5 and the global water production is more than doubled. A sensitivity analysis was also carried out to study the effects of operating conditions on the desalination system performance in terms of feed water temperature, vacuum pressure and solar collector efficiency. Finally, an economic study was performed to estimate the cost of water produced from the three possible configurations: the RO alone, the VMD alone and the RO-VMD combined system. HEAT transfer , *ISOTHERMAL flows , *FINITE element method , *DIFFERENTIAL equations , *BOUNDARY layer equations - Abstract
In order to compute the convective heat transfer coefficient, the present study develops a new technical approach of the constitutive equations of the fluid, based on a realistic physical model of heat transfer for an inclined and an isothermal plate with finite dimensions. Two separate regions with different fluid motions are distinguished. Using suitable transformations of differential equations, the similarity ordinary differential equations were obtained and then solved by an appropriate and simple finite difference method. The analysis of numerical results for some special cases of inclination with visualization photographs is found to be in very good agreement. Numerical results for the dimensionless velocity and temperature profiles are obtained and reported graphically for various values of the parameters entering into the problem. It has observed that Lorenz forces are suitable to control the velocity. Discrepancy between the quasi-analytical formula and the present numerical results are recorded for the Nusselt number and for both the two regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

THERMOPHORESIS , *TEMPERATURE effect , *HEAT transfer , *MASS transfer , *MAGNETIC fields - Abstract
This work investigates mainly the magnetic field and the thermophoresis effects on the heat and mass transfer in steady laminar boundary layer flow of an incompressible viscous micropolar fluid over a moving vertical and permeable plate subjected to a magnetic field without neglecting the resulting dissipation. The governing differential equations are transformed into the ordinary differential equations which are solved numerically. Results are displayed graphically to illustrate the influence of Magnetic parameter, Thermophoretic parameter, and suction/injection parameter on velocity, microrotation, temperature and species concentration profiles. The rate of mass transfer is affected strongly by Thermophoretic parameter while the local skin-friction coefficient and the local wall couple stress are sensitive to the variations of the magnetic field and to the suction case. The micropolarity controls the shear stress but plays a limited role for the others quantities. Heat and mass transfer rate can be regulated principally by the use of a permeable plate with suction. The aim of this work is to investigate the overall performance of an autonomous solar vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) plant for seawater desalination. The system performance was evaluated in terms of several indicators, such as membrane flux rate (MFR), gained output ratio (GOR), performance ratio (PR), recovery ratio (RR) and specific thermal energy consumption (STEC). The obtained results were compared with the reported values from published operational parameters of various solar-powered membrane distillation systems previously tested in literature. The maximum values of MFR, GOR, PR and RR were found to be 14 L/h·m², 3.3, 0.95 kg/MJ and 4.66%, respectively. In addition, the minimum value achieved for STEC was 290 kWh/m³ by a recovery of the latent heat of condensation. Besides, a sensitivity analysis was carried out to study the effect of some operating parameters on GOR performance. The results showed that the GOR can be maximized at low feed flow rate and high feed temperature. A higher GOR value can also be attained with an increase in vacuum level and solar collector area. Finally, an economic study was performed to estimate the expected cost of distilled water produced by the solar VMD plant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Item does not contain fulltext, OBJECTIVE: Independent replication with large cohorts and metaanalysis of genetic associations are necessary to validate genetic susceptibility factors. The known tumor necrosis factor (ligand) superfamily, member 4 gene (TNFSF4) systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) risk locus has been found to be associated with systemic sclerosis (SSc) in 2 studies, but with discrepancies between them for genotype-phenotype correlation. Our objective was to validate TNFSF4 association with SSc and determine the subset with the higher risk. METHODS: Known SLE and SSc TNFSF4 susceptibility variants (rs2205960, rs1234317, rs12039904, rs10912580, and rs844648) were genotyped in 1031 patients with SSc and 1014 controls of French white ancestry. Genotype-phenotype association analysis and metaanalysis of available data were performed, providing a population study of 4989 patients with SSc and 4661 controls, all of European white ancestry. RESULTS: Allelic and genotypic associations were observed for the 5 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) with the subset of patients with SSc who are positive for anticentromere antibodies (ACA) and only a trend for association with SSc and limited cutaneous SSc. Rs2205960 exhibited the strongest allelic association in ACA+ patients with SSc [p = 0.0015; OR 1.37 (1.12-1.66)], with significant intra-cohort association when compared to patients with SSc positive for ACA. Metaanalysis confirmed overall association with SSc but also raised preferential association with the ACA+ subset and strongest effect with rs2205960 [T allele p = 0.00013; OR 1.33 (1.15-1.54) and TT genotype p = 0.00046; OR 2.02 (1.36-2.98)]. CONCLUSION: We confirm TNFSF4 as an SSc susceptibility gene and rs2205960 as a putative causal variant with preferential association in the ACA+ SSc subphenotype.
