We indicate how existing Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) data might be used to gain a better understanding of nightward ion flow in the Venusian ionosphere. Calculations based on PVO measurements made at solar maximum suggest that the global nightward flow of O(+) may be signifcantly greater than is required to maintain the observed nightside ionosphere densities. The validity of this conclusion depends upon (1) the accuracy with which the flow can be determined from the PVO ion density and velocity measurements and (2) the validity of the ionosphere theory used to estimate the required downward O(+) flux on the night side. If the measurements and theory are assumed to be accurate, the excess nightward flow implies a significant rate of ion escape from the planet, particularly at times of low solar wind dynamic pressure, Psw, when the ionopause rises to allow increased nightward flow. To illustrate a potentially important mechanism for ion escape from Venus, we present Orbiter Electron Temperature Probe (OETP) observations of plasma clouds and scavenged ionospheric plasma observed above the ionopause. We then employ OETP and Orbiter Retarding Potential Analyzer (ORPA) data to reexamine the global ion flow for average Psw conditions.

During the final, low solar activity phase of the Pioneer Venus (PV) mission, the Orbiter Ion Mass Spectrometer (OIMS) measurements found all ion species, in the midnight-dusk sector, reduced in concentration relative to that observed at solar maximum. Molecular ion species comprised a greater part of the total ion concentration as O(+) and H(+) had the greatest depletions. The nightside ionospheric states were strikingly similar to the isolated solar maximum 'disappearing' ionospheres. Both are very dynamic states characterized by a rapidly drifting plasma and 30-100 eV superthermal O(+) ions.

During the entry phase of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO), defined as that period at the end of mission in 1992 when the periapsis fell below 185 km, the magnetometer made repeated measurements throughout the post midnight ionosphere until about 0430 LT. In this region the magnetic field is generally stronger at comparable altitudes than it was earlier at times of higher solar activity. This increase combined with a decrease in electron density causes the ratio of the magnetic pressure to thermal pressure to approach unity at altitudes above 200 km, whereas it was much lower than unity at these altitudes during solar maximum. From 160-200 km the magnetic field pressure exceeds that of the ionospheric plasma quite unlike the usual conditions seen at the beginning of the mission. At lowest altitudes below 150 km, however, the field becomes weaker and hence no evidence for a planetary magnetic field is found.

The Pioneer Venus (PV) Orbiter Electric Field Detector (OEFD) measured many plasma wave bursts throughout the low altitude ionosphere during the final entry phase of the spacecraft. Apart from 100 Hz bursts observed at very low altitudes (approx. 130 km), the bursts fall into two classes. The first of these is a wideband signal that is observed in regions of low magnetic field, but average densities, in comparison to the prevailing ionospheric condition. This wideband signal is not observed in the 30 kHz channel of the OEFD, but is resricted to the 5.4 kHz channel and lower. Since these bursts are observed with roughly constant burst rate above 160 km altitude, we attribute them to ion acoustic mode waves generated by precipitating solar wind electrons. The second type of signal is restricted to 100 Hz only, and is observed in the regions of low electron beta, consistent with whistler-mode waves. These waves could be generated by lightning in the Venus atmosphere if the vertical component of the magnetic field greater than 3.6 nT. Because the ionosphere is very different during the entry phase, compared to the ionosphere as observed early in the Pioneer Venus mission, any conclusions regarding the source of the plasma waves detected during entry phase cannot be applied directly to the earlier observations.

Solar activity varied widely over the 14 year lifetime of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO), and these variations directly affected the properties of the nightside ionosphere. At solar maximum, when solar EUV was largest, the Venus ionosphere was found to extend to highest altitudes and nightward ion transport was the main source of the nightside ionosphere. At solar minimum, nightward ion transport was reduced, and electron precipitation was thought to be the main source. In this study, we have attempted a separation of spatial variations from temporal variations by examining the altitude profiles of the magnetic field, and electron density and temperature for three different solar EUV flux ranges. In the upper ionosphere and near-planet magnetotail (h greater than 1800 km), the solar EUV flux effects are significant. The electron density decreases about an order of magnitude from high to low EUV flux, while the electron temperature at least doubles. The magnetic field also increases 2 - 3 nT. In the lower ionosphere (200 - 600 km), lower EUV fluxes are associated with slightly reduced density, and higher temperature. These results are in accord with recent entry phase observations, where the electron density measured above the ionospheric density peak is lower than that observed at solar maximum during the early Pioneer Venus mission.

Data obtained from the WATS (Wind and Temperature Spectrometer) and LP (Langmuir Probe) experiments on board DE-2 (Dynamic Explorer) during high solar activity show evidence of anomalous latitudinal variations in the zonal winds and temperature at low latitudes. The zonal winds exhibit a broad maximum centered around the dip equator, flanked by minima on either side around 25 degrees; while the temperature exhibits a pronounced bowl-shaped minimum at the dip equator which is flanked by maxima. The two minima in the zonal winds and the corresponding maxima in the temperature are nearly collocated with the crests of the well known Equatorial Ionization Anomaly (EIA). The maximum in the zonal winds and the minimum in the gas temperature are collocated with the trough of the EIA. The differences between the maxima and minima in temperature and zonal winds, on many occasions, are observed to exceed 100 K and 100 m/s, respectively. The characteristics of this new phenomenon have eluded present day empirical models of thermospheric temperature and winds. The connection among these variables can be understood from the ion-neutral drag effect on the motions of the neutrals that in turn affect their energy balance.

A global spectral model of electron temperature and density is developed in which only the latitudinal variations observed in narrow altitude and local time bands are used. The measurements for this purpose are obtained during intervals that are short as compared to a season. By suppressing all variables except latitude the model can use 17th-order polynomials and generates a latitudinal structure that is similar to that described by the observational data. The treatment is designed to correct for the eccentricity and slow evolution of the data-collection satellite orbit so that small-scale features can be resolved. By comparing the results of a global model and the present latitudinal model to observational measurements of electron temperature and density it is shown that auroral-zone and midlatitude trough structures are not resolved in latitudinal models. The observational data can be used to study the response of electron density and temperature to solar EUV flux variations and geomagnetic activity.

Ion-mass spectrometers were carried by a number of satellites in the 1970s. The ion-composition measurements from two of these missions, the Orbiting Geophysical Observatory-6 and the Atmosphere Explorer-C, are collected into an ion composition data base to evaluate several widely used empirical and theoretical models for the species H(+), He(+), N(+), O(+), NO(+), N2(+), and O2(+). The data base covers all latitudes and local times, and the altitude range from 150 km to 1200 km, but here altitude plots are presented of the ion densities at noon and at dip latitudes of 20-40 deg N. The satellite data are compared with an early ion-density profile, with the Koehnlein and IRI-90 empirical models, and with the Utah State University theoretical ionosphere model. These comparisons serve to verify some aspects of the models, but they also reveal some outstanding differences. The solar activity dependence of H(+), He(+), N(+), and O(+) is demonstrated, although this has not been possible for the molecular ions because low altitude measurements have not been made near solar maximum.

Solar UV and EUV varies significantly during the solar cycle. Pioneer Venus can measure this variation both directly and indirectly. A direct measure of the EUV is obtained from the photoelectron current of the Langmuir probe when the spacecraft is in the solar wind. The indirect measure is by monitoring the location of the Venus bow shock. The UV and EUV both heat the upper atmosphere and ionize it. When solar activity is high, the upper atmosphere should be ionized more rapidly. This effect adds a greater number of planetary ions to the magnetosheath plasma as it flows by Venus. It is this increase in mass flow that causes the Venus bow shock to move away from its solar minimum location. Pioneer Venus has now monitored the location of the bow shock for an entire solar cycle. The bow shock location is well correlated with the variation in EUV flux as measured by the Langmuir probe. The bow shock is farther from Venus than expected from the sunspot number or 10.7 cm solar radio flux, indicating that solar UV radiation may be even stronger at the present time than would be predicted from the relationships determined during the previous solar cycle.

Newly developed global models of the electron density of (Ne) and (Te) in the F-region at solar maximum, based on Langmuir probe measurements from the Dynamics Explorer-2 satellite, are compared with solar minimum models that were developed earlier from Atmosphere Explorer data. Spherical harmonics are used in both models to describe the variations with geomagnetic latitude and local time, but the solar maximum model also includes longitudinal variations. The solar minimum models were for the fixed altitudes of 300 km and 400 km, while the solar maximum model covers all altitudes between 300 and 1000 km. In this paper, the global patterns of Ne and Te at 400 km at solar maximum and minimum are compared with the IRI model for the corresponding parts of the solar cycle. In most respects, the IRI model describes the empirical models quite well at both solar maximum and solar minimum.

It has been observed from the plasma experiments on the Pioneer Venus Orbiter that the altitude of the upper boundary of the ionosphere decreases in response to increasing solar wind dynamic pressure. However, at pressures above about 2.5 x 10 to the -8th dynes/sq cm, the further decrease in the ionopause height is rather small. Following the model of Cloutier et al. (1969), it is suggested that during high solar wind conditions, when the ionopause is formed at lower altitudes, the solar wind induces vertical and horizontal flows which sweep away the ionospheric plasma that is produced locally by photoionization. As a result, a disturbed photodynamical ionosphere is formed which has the scale height of the ionizable neutral constituent. It is shown that such a photodynamical ionosphere is observed at the subsolar ionopause under these conditions. As a consequence of this interaction, the ionopause altitude is observed to follow the small-scale height of the ionizable species, atomic oxygen, showing only small changes with solar wind pressure.

Empirical models such as the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) are synthesized from large data bases. They can be viewed as analytical tools to facilitate accessing information stored in the data banks. However, in establishing the models, one has to apply smoothing and averaging procedures that in effect reduce the original information content. This study evaluates the agreement between the data base and the model at two opposite extremes of time resolution. Electron densities and temperatures in the altitude range of 300 to 400 km predicted by the IRI and measured by the AE-C and DE 2 satellites on the level of individual orbits as well as on the level of mission averages are compared. Whereas the averages show excellent agreement, the comparison for individual measurements indicates the limitations of empirical models.

Enhancements in thermal ion densities, an oxygen dominated ring current at energies below 17 keV, and invariant latitude-limited bands of intense ELF hiss have been discovered on Stable Auroral Red (SAR) arc field lines at magnetospheric heights. These new signatures were revealed by an examination of 31 coordinated data sets taken simultaneously at magnetospheric and ionospheric heights by the De-1 and -2 satellites during SAR arc traversals within the period September 1981 through April 1982. Data sets from DE-2, for the first time, provide information on the location of a SAR arc (determined by the F region electron temperature enhancement) during the nearly simultaneous passage of these field lines by DE-1 in the magnetosphere. These new high altitude signatures are examined in the context of possible magnetospheric SAR arc energy source mechanisms.

The subsolar ionopause of Venus is expected to be stable to both the Kelvin-Helmholtz and flute instabilities. However, magnetic profiles obtained in the subsolar region indicate that the surface of the ionopause contains large amplitude corrugations, perhaps incipient flux ropes. A possible mechanism for destabilizing the boundary is suggested by the observation that the ion density does not drop abruptly at the ionopause but continues to decrease smoothly into the magnetosheath.

Langmuir-probe measurements made at solar maximum from the DE-2 satellite in 1981 and 1982 are used to examine the latitudinal variation of electron temperature at altitudes between 300 and 400 km and its response to 27-day variations of solar EUV. A comparison of these data with models based on solar-minimum measurements from the AE-C suggests that the daytime electron temperature does not change very much during the solar cycle except at low latitudes where a particularly large 27-day variation occurs. It is found that the daytime electron temperature near the F2 peak is more responsive to short-term variations in F10.7 than to any longer-term changes that may occur between solar minimum and maximum.

Above the ionosphere of Venus, several instruments on the Pioneer Orbiter detect correlated wave, field and particle phenomena suggestive of current-driven anomalous resistivity and auroral-type particle acceleration. In localized regions the plasma wave instrument measures intense mid-frequency turbulence levels together with strong field-aligned currents. Here the local parameters indicate that there is marginal stability for ion acoustic waves, and the electron temperature probe finds evidence that energetic primaries are present. This suggests an auroral-type energy deposition into the upper atmosphere of Venus. These results appear to be consistent with the direct measurements of auroral emissions from the Pioneer-Venus ultraviolet imaging spectrometer.

The Venus ionosphere is influenced by variations in both solar EUV flux and solar wind conditions. On the dayside the location of the topside of the ionosphere, the ionopause, is controlled by solar wind dynamic pressure. Within the dayside ionosphere, however, electron density is affected mainly by solar EUV variations, and is relatively unaffected by solar wind variations and associated magnetic fields induced within the ionosphere. The existence of a substantial nightside ionosphere of Venus is thought to be due to the rapid nightward transport of dayside ionospheric plasma across the terminator. Typical solar wind conditions do not strongly affect this transport and consequently have little direct influence on nightside ionospheric conditions, except on occasions of extremely high solar wind dynamic pressure. However, both nightside electron density and temperature are affected by the presence of magnetic field, as in the case of ionospheric holes.

Ionosphere electron temperature data gathered by the AE-C, AEROS, Isis-1 and -2 spacecraft are employed to define linear models for the average conditions. Account is taken of evidence for seasonal, altitudinal, solar activity and density-temperature effects. Notably, use is made of the high negative correlations between the electron temperature and density, thereby allowing either to be calculated if data are available on the density.

Using global empirical models of Venus ionospheric conditions, the plasma flow field consistent with the horizontal momentum equation in both viscid and inviscid forms is solved for. It is found that plasma viscosity is negligible except at low altitudes and that the observed plasma flows are consistent with the inviscid solution above 300 km but are larger than the calculated flows at lower altitudes. This is probably due to downward momentum advection. The strong vertical shear in the calculated and observed flows just beyond the terminator may produce turbulence there, manifested as the observed transterminator waves in plasma density and magnetic field. The implications of ionospheric superrotation are discussed.

The manner in which secular changes in the orbit of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) research satellite influence its data collecting capabilities is discussed. A brief description of the propulsion system and sensor arrays of the satellite is presented, and the susceptibility of these systems to changes in power supply due to the decline in solar activity is considered. It is pointed out that the PVO should have enough fuel to continue to transmit data until after the arrival of Comet Halley in 1986, and that, during the 1991 to 1992 period, more moderate levels of solar activity will permit more accurate measurements of thermospheric and ionospheric parameters.

On the basis of in situ measurements of solar EUV flux, an investigation is conducted on the extent of EUV-contributed Venus dayside condition modulation as found in the Pioneer Venus Orbiter's Langmuir probe experiment. In addition, a novel method for Venus EUV flux measurement is introduced which relies on the Langmuir probe sensor's photoelectron emission in regions far above the ionosphere. It is found that while EUV flux strongly affects ionospheric number density, its electron temperature effects are minor. An examination of the role of ionospheric magnetic fields in dayside condition modulation shows that large scale horizontal field presence or absence has no effect on electron number density or temperature at these altitudes, due to the collision domination of ions and the fact that vertical diffusive transport is unimpeded by magnetic fields of the observed magnitudes.

Data from the Atmospheric Explorer-C recorded during the rise in solar activity from 1975 to 1978, and Dynamic Explorer-2 data recorded at solar maximum are used to examine how the relation between electron temperature and density in the F-region of the ionosphere is altered by solar activity. It is found that the solar maximum temperature Te is a factor of two larger than the solar minimum Te for the same values of electron density. Temperature does not necessarily increase in response to solar activity because electron density increases enough to approximately cancel the effect of higher solar extreme ultraviolet heating. The effect of solar activity is accounted for by a simple function of the F (10.7 cm) index which multiplies the solar minimum equation from a previous study (Brace and Theis, 1978).

In the lower ionosphere of Venus, just nightward of the terminator, instruments on the Pioneer Venus Orbiter have revealed nearly coherent wave trains in the electron density, N(e), temperature, T(e), and in the east-west component of the magnetic field, B(E). These waves exist primarily below 200 km. They have north-south wavelengths of the order of 150 km and amplitudes in N(e) and T(e) of about a factor of 2 or 3. B(E) has an amplitude of about 30 nT but no net value averaged over the waves. A unique phase relationship exists between these three parameters. N(e) and T(e) vary approximately inversely, suggesting that the waves represent vertical plasma motions. N(e) maxima and minima tend to occur at zero crossings of B(E), i.e., within regions of vertical current. The wave energy is believed to be derived from the steep plasma pressure gradient at the terminator which accelerates ionospheric plasma nightward. The generation process is unknown, but it may involve gradient driven interchange instabilities, or shear instabilities produced by ion-neutral drag at lower altitudes. Whatever their origin, the waves are important because they represent an energy sink for the transterminator flow that is largely responsible for the maintenance of the nightside ionosphere.

The Bennett rf ion mass spectrometer of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter was expressly designed to provide variable temporal resolution for measurements of thermal ion composition and density. The Explore-Adapt mode is used to obtain priority for measuring the most prominent ion species; in the 2/16 configuration, the two dominant ions within the available range of 16 species are selectively sampled at the highest rate of 0.2 sec/sample. The high-resolution measurements are combined with independent observations from the magnetic field, neutral mass spectrometer, and electron temperature experiments in investigating sharply structured troughs in the low-altitude nightside ion concentrations. The results suggest a close correlation between the structure in the ion distributions and the structured configuration of the magnetic field that is draped about the planet. In the regions of the ion depletions, sharp fluctuations in electron temperature and anomalous increases in the density of neutral gases suggest that the ion depletion may be associated with dynamic perturbation in the ion and neutral flows and/or local joule heating.

Theoretical models of the ionosphere of Venus have been constructed in the past without due consideration of the fact that the ionosphere is sometimes magnetized. This paper examines some differences between the magnetized and unmagnetized dayside Venus ionosphere using the Pioneer Venus Orbiter Langmuir probe and magnetometer data. Particular attention is given to the evaluation of the altitude profiles of the thermal electron heating and comparison of the magnitude of the magnetic force with other forces in the ionosphere. Several examples illustrate how heating profiles are different in the magnetized ionosphere with effective heating below 200 km altitude reduced by orders of magnitude compared to the field-free ionosphere. The force associated with the magnetic field is comparable to other forces in the magnetized ionosphere. The measured plasma density, electron temperature and magnetic field thus suggest that large-scale magnetic fields should be included in future ionosphere models.
