We report the detailed investigation of the capability of an electrically tunable liquid crystal lens (TLCL) to dynamically generate various wavefront shapes. The TLCL operates in the modal-control mode with a peripheral circular electrode divided into eight individually controlled segments. This segmentation allows producing a rather rich set of influence functions. We characterize these functions and the crosstalk between them by adjusting the voltage and the frequency of electrical signals applied to different electrode segments. Various wavefronts are produced in a closed-loop control mode and described using Zernike polynomials. The dynamical response of the lens is also briefly investigated. Obtained results may be used to design different adaptive optical systems where a dynamic wavefront control is required.

Objective: The chiropractic techniques that chiropractors learn during their training strongly influence the nature of treatments provided by chiropractors and their professional identity. The objective of this project is to provide an exhaustive description of all chiropractic techniques and treatment modalities taught in chiropractic educational institutions., Methods: International experts were solicited to provide feedback on the exhaustivity and clarity of our preliminary questionnaire. Following the expert suggestions, we administered our cross-sectional survey representatives of all chiropractic education institutions listed on the World Federation of Chiropractic website. We also asked the contact information for an additional contact from each institution and surveyed them for triangulation purposes., Results: Among the 47 chiropractic education institutions surveyed, 29 completed our survey (response rate: 62%) of which 18 (62%) had 2 respondents. Among all the chiropractic techniques and treatment modalities investigated, only the Diversified technique was included in the core curriculum of all responding institutions. A considerable proportion of the techniques or modalities studied were not included in the educational activities of the institutions, particularly within the manual tonal or reflex techniques, instrument-assisted articular techniques, as well as the other techniques or modalities categories. Surprisingly, exercise prescription was not included in the core curriculum of all the institutions. Some scientifically challenged approaches were included in the educational activities of more than 40% of the institutions., Conclusion: The portfolio of therapeutic teaching varies greatly between chiropractic educational institutions. Background: Thresholding apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps obtained from Diffusion-Weighted-Imaging (DWI) has been proposed for identifying benign lesions that can safely avoid biopsy. The presence of malignancies with high ADC values leads to high thresholds, limiting numbers of avoidable biopsies., Purpose: We evaluate two previously reported methods for identifying avoidable biopsies: using case-set dependent ADC thresholds that assure 100% sensitivity and using negative likelihood ratio (LR-) with a fixed ADC threshold of 1.50 × 10 -3  mm 2 /s. We evaluated improvements in efficacy obtained by excluding non-mass lesions and lesions with anisotropic intra-lesion morphologic characteristics., Study Type: Prospective., Population: 55 adult females with dense breasts with 69 BI-RADS 4 or 5 lesions (38 malignant, 31 benign) identified on ultrasound and mammography and imaged with MRI prior to biopsy., Field Strength/sequence: 1.5 T and 3.0 T. DWI., Assessment: Analysis of DWI, including directional images was done on an ROI basis. ROIs were drawn on DWI images acquired prior to biopsy, referencing all available images including DCE, and mean ADC was measured. Anisotropy was quantified via variation in ADC values in the lesion core across directional DWI images., Statistical Tests: Improvement in specificity at 100% sensitivity was evaluated with exact McNemar test with 1-sided p-value < 0.05 indicating statistical significance., Results: Using ADC thresholding that assures 100% sensitivity, non-mass and directional variance filtering improved the percent of avoidable biopsies to 42% from baseline of 10% achieved with ADC thresholding alone. Using LR-, filtering improved outcome to 0.06 from baseline 0.25 with ADC thresholding alone. ADC thresholding showed a lower percentage of avoidable biopsies in our cohort than reported in prior studies. When ADC thresholding was supplemented with filtering, the percentage of avoidable biopsies exceeded those of prior studies., Data Conclusion: Supplementing ADC thresholding with filters excluding non-mass lesions and lesions with anisotropic characteristics on DWI can result in an increased number of avoidable biopsies., (© 2022. Autonomous and cabled platforms are revolutionizing our understanding of ocean systems by providing 4D monitoring of the water column, thus going beyond the reach of ship-based surveys and increasing the depth of remotely sensed observations. However, very few commercially available sensors for such platforms are capable of monitoring large particulate matter (100-2000  μ m) and plankton despite their important roles in the biological carbon pump and as trophic links from phytoplankton to fish. Here, we provide details of a new, commercially available scientific camera-based particle counter, specifically designed to be deployed on autonomous and cabled platforms: the Underwater Vision Profiler 6 (UVP6). Indeed, the UVP6 camera-and-lighting and processing system, while small in size and requiring low power, provides data of quality comparable to that of previous much larger UVPs deployed from ships. We detail the UVP6 camera settings, its performance when acquiring data on aquatic particles and plankton, their quality control, analysis of its recordings, and streaming from in situ acquisition to users. In addition, we explain how the UVP6 has already been integrated into platforms such as BGC-Argo floats, gliders and long-term mooring systems (autonomous platforms). Finally, we use results from actual deployments to illustrate how UVP6 data can contribute to addressing longstanding questions in marine science, and also suggest new avenues that can be explored using UVP6-equipped autonomous platforms., (© 2021 The Authors. Background: Manual therapy is a cornerstone of chiropractic education, whereby students work towards a level of skill and expertise that is regarded as competent to work within the field of chiropractic. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, chiropractic programs in every region around the world had to make rapid changes to the delivery of manual therapy technique education, however what those changes looked like was unknown., Aims: The aims of this study were to describe the immediate actions made by chiropractic programs to deliver education for manual therapy techniques and to summarise the experience of academics who teach manual therapy techniques during the initial outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: A qualitative descriptive approach was used to describe the immediate actions made by chiropractic programs to deliver manual therapy technique education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Chiropractic programs were identified from the webpages of the Councils on Chiropractic Education International and the Council on Chiropractic Education - USA. Between May and June 2020, a convenience sample of academics who lead or teach in manual therapy technique in those programs were invited via email to participate in an online survey with open-ended questions. Responses were entered into the NVivo software program and analysed using a reflexive thematic analysis by a qualitative researcher independent to the data collection., Results: Data from 16 academics in 13 separate chiropractic programs revealed five, interconnected themes: Immediate response; Move to online delivery; Impact on learning and teaching; Additional challenges faced by educators; and Ongoing challenges post lockdown., Conclusion: This study used a qualitative descriptive approach to describe how some chiropractic programs immediately responded to the initial outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in their teaching of manual therapy techniques. Chiropractic programs around the world provided their students with rapid, innovative learning strategies, in an attempt to maintain high standards of chiropractic education; however, challenges included maintaining student engagement in an online teaching environment, psychomotor skills acquisition and staff workload.

We introduce a random-access parallel (RAP) imaging modality that uses a novel design inspired by a Newtonian telescope to image multiple spatially separated samples without moving parts or robotics. This scheme enables near-simultaneous image capture of multiple petri dishes and random-access imaging with sub-millisecond switching times at the full resolution of the camera. This enables the RAP system to capture long-duration records from different samples in parallel, which is not possible using conventional automated microscopes. Background: There is an increasing interest in non-contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for detecting and evaluating breast lesions. We present a methodology utilizing lesion core and periphery region of interest (ROI) features derived from directional diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) data to evaluate performance in discriminating benign from malignant lesions in dense breasts., Methods: We accrued 55 dense-breast cases with 69 lesions (31 benign; 38 cancer) at a single institution in a prospective study; cases with ROIs exceeding 7.50 cm 2 were excluded, resulting in analysis of 50 cases with 63 lesions (29 benign, 34 cancers). Spin-echo echo-planar imaging DWI was acquired at 1.5 T and 3 T. Data from three diffusion encoding gradient directions were exported and processed independently. Lesion ROIs were hand-drawn on DWI images by two radiologists. A region growing algorithm generated 3D lesion models on augmented apparent-diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps and defined lesion core and lesion periphery sub-ROIs. A lesion-core and a lesion-periphery feature were defined and combined into an overall classifier whose performance was compared to that of mean ADC using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Inter-observer variability in ROI definition was measured using Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC)., Results: The region-growing algorithm for 3D lesion model generation improved inter-observer variability over hand drawn ROIs (DSC: 0.66 vs 0.56 (p < 0.001) with substantial agreement (DSC > 0.8) in 46% vs 13% of cases, respectively (p < 0.001)). The overall classifier improved discrimination over mean ADC, (ROC- area under the curve (AUC): 0.85 vs 0.75 and 0.83 vs 0.74 respectively for the two readers)., Conclusions: A classifier generated from directional DWI information using lesion core and lesion periphery information separately can improve lesion discrimination in dense breasts over mean ADC and should be considered for inclusion in computer-aided diagnosis algorithms. Our model-based ROIs could facilitate standardization of breast MRI computer-aided diagnostics (CADx).

A method is proposed to split the central spot of zero-order Bessel beams into two parallel spots along the propagation axis of the beam. A magnetic-liquid deformable mirror is used to provide the required phase profile combining an axicon and a phase step. The obtained Y-junction Bessel beam has been characterized; the 80 µm central spot of the Bessel beam is split into two spots of the same size that have been propagated over a length exceeding 15 cm. The observations are consistent with the predictions of a numerical model. Potential applications of Y-junction Bessel beams are discussed.

We propose a new strategy to curve the trajectory of the central lobe of a zero-order Bessel beam and a first-order Bessel beam along their propagation axis. Our method involves modifying the phase of a beam that is incident on an adaptive mirror. As examples, we show that the most intense lobe of the beam can follow a parabolic trajectory, a cubic trajectory, or a trajectory made by a combination of these orders. By using a phase correction emulating the effect of cylindrical mirrors, the central lobe always preserves its symmetry. Theoretical simulations were reproduced in the laboratory using a magnetic-liquid deformable mirror. The parabolic trajectory of the 60-μm central spot of a zero-order Bessel beam exhibits a 0.6-mm off-axis shift after 30-cm-length propagation.

The objective of this jurisdictional review is to provide summary information pertaining to the regulation of chiropractors in Canadian provinces and territories on the topic of informed consent. Our review shows that two provinces have legislated for all healthcare professions: Ontario and Prince Edward Island. Two chiropractic regulatory bodies (New Brunswick and, Newfoundland and Labrador) have adopted the Canadian Chiropractic Association Code of Conduct. All chiropractic regulatory bodies of the other provinces and Yukon have adopted their own specific dispositions regarding informed consent. Chiropractors in Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan and Québec must obtain informed consent in writing.

Magnetic-liquid deformable mirrors (MLDMs) were introduced by our group in 2004 and numerous developments have been made since then. The usefulness of this type of mirror in various applications has already been shown, but experimental data on their dynamics are still lacking. A complete theoretical modeling of MLDM dynamics is a complex task because it requires an approach based on magnetohydrodynamics. A purpose of this paper is to present and analyze new experimental data of the dynamics of these mirrors from open-loop step response measurements and show that a basic transfer function modeling is adequate to achieve closed-loop control. Also, experimental data on the eigenmodes dynamic is presented and a modal-based control approach is suggested.

The purpose of this study was to identify rates of adherence for three outpatient quality indicators noted by Wang et al. (Pediatrics 2011;128:484–493): (1) influenza vaccine, (2) pneumococcal immunizations, and (3)penicillin prophylaxis in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) in a Medicaid sample. These variables were chosen based on Wang and colleagues' suggestion that these variables are important for the assessment of the quality of care of children with SCD. We hypothesized that the overall rate of adherence would be poor with adults having worse rates of adherence than children. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the Wisconsin State Medicaid database over a 5-year period to assess the preventative medication adherence of individuals with SCD. Preventative medication variables in this study included influenza vaccination,pneumococcal immunizations (PCV7, PPV23), and penicillin prophylaxis. As predicted, the 2003–2007 Wisconsin State Medicaid database showed patients with SCD had low adherence in terms of recommended influenza vaccinations (21.58% adherent), PPV23 pneumococcal immunizations (43.47% adherent), and penicillin prophylaxis (18.18% adherent). Pneumococcal immunizations for PCV7 were higher than expected (77.27%adherent). Although children tended to adhere to recommended preventative medications more than adults,overall adherence was low. Although we cannot explain why adherence is low, it is likely due to multiple factors at the patient- and provider-level. We encourage patients and providers to create a partnership to meet adherence recommendations, and we describe our strategies for increasing adherence.

A deformable mirror made of a magnetic liquid has been used to produce conical surfaces with subwavelength (λ/4) accuracy. The surface profile of the liquid mirror is controlled by 91 small magnetic coils. The mirror exhibits a linear response with respect to the currents driving the coils, and it allows for real-time changes of its surface profile. The magnetic liquid deformable mirror has been used to produce reflected beams having a conical wavefront; the propagation of the reflected beams was verified to be consistent with that of Bessel beams in the near and far field. We present the experimental performance of a 91-actuator deformable mirror made of a magnetic liquid (ferrofluid) using a new technique that linearizes the response of the mirror by superposing a uniform magnetic field to the one produced by the actuators. We demonstrate linear driving of the mirror using influence functions, measured with a Fizeau interferometer, by producing the first 36 Zernikes polynomials. Based on our measurements, we predict achievable mean PV wavefront amplitudes of up to 30 microm having RMS residuals of lambda/10 at 632.8 nm. Linear combination of Zernikes and over-time repeatability are also demonstrated.

Ferrofluids can be used to make deformable mirrors having highly interesting characteristics (e.g., extremely large strokes and low costs). Until recently, such mirrors were thought to be restricted to corrections of frequencies lower than 10 Hz, thus limiting their usefulness. We present counterintuitive results that demonstrate that the limiting operational frequency can be increased by increasing the viscosity of the ferrofluid. We tested the response of ferrofluids having viscosities as high as 494 cP, finding that they could allow an adaptive optics correction frequency as high as 900 Hz. We also demonstrate that we can counter the amplitude loss due to the high viscosity by overdriving the actuators. The overdriving technique combines high current, short duration pulses with ordinary driving step functions to deform the mirror. The integration of a FDM in a complete closed-loop adaptive optics system running at about 500 Hz thus appears to be a realistic goal in the near future.

This paper discusses an innovative low-cost deformable mirror made of a magnetic liquid (ferrofluid) whose surface is actuated by an hexagonal array of small current carrying coils. Predicted and experimental performances of a 37-actuator ferrofluid deformable mirror are presented along with wavefront correction examples. We show the validity of the model used to compute the actuators currents to obtain a desired wavefront shape. We demonstrate that the ferrofluid deformable mirror can correct a 11 microm low order aberrated wavefront to a residual RMS error of 0.05 microm corresponding to a Strehl ratio of 0.82.

We present a new class of magnetically shaped deformable liquid mirrors made of a magnetic liquid (ferrofluid). Deformable liquid mirrors offer advantages with respect to deformable solid mirrors: large deformations, low costs and the possibility of very large mirrors with added aberration control. They have some disadvantages (e.g. slower response time). We made and tested a deformable mirror, producing axially symmetrical wavefront aberrations by applying electric currents to 5 concentric coils made of copper wire wound on aluminum cylinders. Each of these coils generates a magnetic field which combines to deform the surface of a ferrofluid to the desired shape. We have carried out laboratory tests on a 5 cm diameter prototype mirror and demonstrated defocus as well as Seidel and Zernike spherical aberrations having amplitudes up to 20 microm, which was the limiting measurable amplitude of our equipment.

We provide evidence that normal human presenilins can substitute for Caenorhabditis elegans SEL-12 protein in functional assays in vivo. In addition, six familial Alzheimer disease-linked mutant human presenilins were tested and found to have reduced ability to rescue the sel-12 mutant phenotype, suggesting that they have lower than normal presenilin activity. A human presenilin 1 deletion variant that fails to be proteolytically processed and a mutant SEL-12 protein that lacks the C terminus display considerable activity in this assay, suggesting that neither presenilin proteolysis nor the C terminus is absolutely required for normal presenilin function. We also show that sel-12 is expressed in most neural and nonneural cell types in all developmental stages. The reduced activity of mutant presenilins and as yet unknown gain-of-function properties may be a contributing factor in the development of Alzheimer disease.

The present study was undertaken to compare fluorometric documentation of fluorescein dye delivery with the standard means of determining the level at which an amputation should be performed in the dysvascular extremity. Thirty-nine patients underwent lower-extremity amputation at the level determined by the surgeon based upon physical examination, angiography, segmental pressure indices, and/or pulse volume recordings. In addition, fiberoptic fluorometry was performed preoperatively. After intravenous administration of sodium fluorescein (4-8 mg/kg), fluorometric readings were obtained by placing the fluorometer's light guide on 126 reading sites. Fluorometric findings were evaluated retrospectively, and therefore did not influence the surgeon's decision. Of the 39 amputations performed overall, only 26 healed. The accuracy of the standard criteria was lowest for the 20 below-ankle amputations, where only 12 cases healed. Alternatively, fluorometric indices separated healing from nonhealing sites in 36 of the 39 cases and in 18 of the 20 below-ankle amputations. Overall, healing sites averaged 94 percent of the fluorescence of the healthy reference area, while nonhealing sites averaged only 29 percent. We conclude that fluorometry should prove to be a valuable adjunct in the assessment of the dysvascular extremity. It uses a low dose of dye, is easy to perform, and is readily repeatable.
