The operation of a photoconductive spark gap switch is reviewed. It is shown that it is possible to produce pulses far below the self-breakdown voltage of the gap. The resistance of the switch depends on the switched current through the switch. Electro-dynamic simulations show that the rise time of the pulse depends on the layout of the switch and is approximately 35 ps for the setup used here. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The area of pulsed-power technology covers a broad range of powers (up to 1014 W), voltages (up to 106-107 V), currents (as high as 106 A or higher) and pulse durations (below 10-8 s). State of the art systems have voltages up to a few hundred kilovolts at pulse lengths down to the nanosecond range. Special applications require extreme field strengths in the range of 1 GV/m. The design of a compact source, meeting the above requirement aims for 1 MV, 1 ns pulses. In this paper, we present a novel compact TLT (Transmission Line Transformer). The TLT consists of 10 coaxial transmission lines which are connected in parallel at the input and in series at the output. To verify the theoretical analysis a model of the transmission line transformer has been simulated by a time domain electromagnetic field solver. An optimized transmission line transformer has been built and first measurements have been performed. The equivalent circuit model and the simulations agree with the experimental results. The effect of secondary mode suppression by means of ferrite has been investigated. Both simulations and experiments showed that ferromagnetic cores around each individual transmissions line in our design can be omitted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Terahertz (THz) pulses are applied in areas as diverse as materials science, communication and biosensing. Techniques for subwavelength concentration of THz pulses give access to a rapidly growing range of spatial scales and field intensities. Here we experimentally demonstrate a method to generate intense THz pulses on a metal wire, thereby introducing the possibility of wave-guiding and focussing of the full THz pulse energy to subwavelength spotsizes. This enables endoscopic sensing, single-shot subwavelength THz imaging and study of strongly nonlinear THz phenomena. We generate THz surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) by launching electron bunches onto the tip of a bare metal wire. Bunches with 160 pC charge and ≈6 ps duration yield SPPs with 6-10 ps duration and 0.4±0.1 MV m -1 electric field strength on a 1.5 mm diameter aluminium wire. These are the most intense SPPs reported on a wire. The SPPs are shown to propagate around a 90° bend.
