Abstract

The neutral pion generates the leading pole contribution to the hadronic light-by-light tensor, which is given in terms of the nonperturbative transition form factor $\mathcal{F}_{\pi^0\gamma\gamma}(q_1^2,q_2^2)$. Here we present an ab-initio lattice calculation of this quantity in the continuum and at the physical point using twisted-mass lattice QCD. We report our results for the transition form factor parameterized using a model-independent conformal expansion valid for arbitrary space-like kinematics and compare it with experimental measurements of the single-virtual form factor, the two-photon decay width, and the slope parameter. We then use the transition form factors to compute the pion-pole contribution to the hadronic light-by-light scattering in the muon $g-2$, finding $a_\mu^{\pi^0\text{-pole}} = 56.7(3.2) \times 10^{-11}$., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures, 4 tables, updated to published version

Abstract

Instruction set extensions (ISEs) improve the performance and energy consumption of application-specific processors. ISEs can use architecturally visible storage (AVS), localized compiler-controlled memories, to provide higher I/O bandwidth than reading data from the processor pipeline. AVS creates coherence and consistence problems with the data cache. Although a hardware coherence protocol could solve the problem, this approach is costly for a single-processor system. As a low-cost alternative, we introduce Virtual Ways, which ensures coherence through a reduced form of inclusion between the data cache and AVS. VirtualWays achieve higher performance and lower energy consumption than using a hardware coherence protocol. © 2014 ACM.

Abstract

Customizable processors augmented with application-specific Instruction Set Extensions (ISEs) have begun to gain traction in recent years. The most effective ISEs include Architecturally Visible Storage (AVS), compiler-controlled memories accessible exclusively to the ISEs. Unfortunately, the usage of AVS memories creates a coherence problem with the data cache. A multiprocessor coherence protocol can solve the problem, however, this is an expensive solution when applied in a uniprocessor context. Instead, we can solve the problem by modifying the cache controller so that the AVS memories function as extra ways of the cache with respect to coherence, but are not generally accessible as extra ways for use under normal software execution. This solution, which we call Virtual Ways is less costly than a hardware coherence protocol, and eliminate coherence messages from the system bus, which improves energy consumption. Moreover, eliminating these messages makes Virtual Ways significantly more robust to performance degradation when there is a significant disparity in clock frequency between the processor and main memory. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

Pseudoscalar-pole diagrams are an important component of estimates of the hadronic light-by-light (HLbL) contribution to the muon $g-2$. We report on our computation of the transition form factors $\mathcal{F}_{P \rightarrow \gamma^* \gamma^*}$ for the neutral pseudoscalar mesons $P=\pi^0$ and $\eta$. The calculation is performed using twisted-mass lattice QCD with physical quark masses. On the lattice, we have access to a broad range of (space-like) photon four-momenta and therefore produce form factor data complementary to the experimentally accessible single-virtual direction, which directly leads to an estimate of the pion- and $\eta$-pole components of the muon $g-2$. For the pion, our result for the $g-2$ contribution in the continuum is comparable with previous lattice and data-driven determinations, with combined relative uncertainties below $10\%$. For the $\eta$ meson, we report on a preliminary determination from a single lattice spacing.

Contains fulltext : 206572.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), We delineate a KMT2E-related neurodevelopmental disorder on the basis of 38 individuals in 36 families. This study includes 31 distinct heterozygous variants in KMT2E (28 ascertained from Matchmaker Exchange and three previously reported), and four individuals with chromosome 7q22.2-22.23 microdeletions encompassing KMT2E (one previously reported). Almost all variants occurred de novo, and most were truncating. Most affected individuals with protein-truncating variants presented with mild intellectual disability. One-quarter of individuals met criteria for autism. Additional common features include macrocephaly, hypotonia, functional gastrointestinal abnormalities, and a subtle facial gestalt. Epilepsy was present in about one-fifth of individuals with truncating variants and was responsive to treatment with anti-epileptic medications in almost all. More than 70% of the individuals were male, and expressivity was variable by sex; epilepsy was more common in females and autism more common in males. The four individuals with microdeletions encompassing KMT2E generally presented similarly to those with truncating variants, but the degree of developmental delay was greater. The group of four individuals with missense variants in KMT2E presented with the most severe developmental delays. Epilepsy was present in all individuals with missense variants, often manifesting as treatment-resistant infantile epileptic encephalopathy. Microcephaly was also common in this group. Haploinsufficiency versus gain-of-function or dominant-negative effects specific to these missense variants in KMT2E might explain this divergence in phenotype, but requires independent validation. Disruptive variants in KMT2E are an under-recognized cause of neurodevelopmental abnormalities.

Abstract

Single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays are solid-state detectors that offer imaging capabilities at the level of individual photons, with unparalleled photon counting and time-resolved performance. This fascinating technology has progressed at a very fast pace in the past 15 years, since its inception in standard CMOS technology in 2003. A host of architectures have been investigated, ranging from simpler implementations, based solely on off-chip data processing, to progressively “smarter” sensors including on-chip, or even pixel level, time-stamping and processing capabilities. As the technology has matured, a range of biophotonics applications have been explored, including (endoscopic) FLIM, (multibeam multiphoton) FLIM-FRET, SPIM-FCS, super-resolution microscopy, time-resolved Raman spectroscopy, NIROT and PET. We will review some representative sensors and their corresponding applications, including the most relevant challenges faced by chip designers and end-users. Abstract

The richness and diversity of the Moroccan Saharan flora constitutes a veritable phytogenetic reservoir with a flora that includes more than 500 aromatic and medicinal species, many of which remain unexploited. Among these plants we find Atremisia herba alba in the region of Guelmim (Sahara of Morocco) which has a great potential in phytomass and which deserves to be better valued. The objective of this work is the comparative study of the yield and chemical composition of the essential oil derived from Artemisia herba alba in Guelmim region (Sahara of Morocco) according to the date of harvest as well as the determination of its antibacterial and antifungal activity towards eleven microorganisms. Essential oils yields expressed in ml compared with 100 g of dry matter of Artemisia herba alba harvested in March, June, September and December (2015) are respectively 1.62; 0.95; 0.64 and 1.85 %. Chromatographic analyses of essential oils revealed the predominance of camphor, cis-b-terpineol, camphene, trans-thujone and trans-verbenol whose rates vary according to the plant phenological stage. The essential oil of Artemisia herba-alba collected during March was the most active against all microorganisms tested.

Abstract

sCMOS imagers are currently utilized (replacing EMCCD imagers) to increase the acquisition speed in super resolution localization microscopy. Single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) imagers feature frame rates per bit depth comparable to or higher than sCMOS imagers, while generating microsecond 1-bit-frames without readout noise, thus paving the way to in-depth time-resolved image analysis. High timing resolution can also be exploited to explore fluorescent dye blinking and other photophysical properties, which can be used for dye optimization. We present the methodology for the blinking analysis of fluorescent dyes on experimental data. Furthermore, the recent use of microlenses has enabled a substantial increase of SPAD imager overall sensitivity (12-fold in our case), reaching satisfactory values for sensitivity-critical applications. Abstract

This article (also online at www.articolo29.it/genius) gives a compact overview of developments in national and European law regarding same-sex partners. Over the last decades, new legal family formats (such as registered partnership and de facto union) have been made available in a growing number of countries. The number of countries that have opened up marriage to same-sex couples is also growing. Authors of comparative family law have proposed various classifications of the new legal family formats. Meanwhile, an increasing number of EU laws now acknowledge non-marital partners. The European Courts have been asked several times to rule on controversial differentiations between different legal family formats or between same-sex and different-sex partners. In the case law of the European Court of Human Rights one can find examples of affirmative eloquence which suggest that more steps towards full legal recognition of same-sex families could be expected. Abstract

The paper presents a camera comprising 512 × 128 pixels capable of single-photon detection and gating with a maximum frame rate of 156 kfps. The photon capture is performed through a gated single-photon avalanche diode that generates a digital pulse upon photon detection and through a digital one-bit counter. Gray levels are obtained through multiple counting and accumulation, while time-resolved imaging is achieved through a 4-ns gating window controlled with subnanosecond accuracy by a field-programmable gate array. The sensor, which is equipped with microlenses to enhance its effective fill factor, was electro-optically characterized in terms of sensitivity and uniformity. Abstract

Using high-resolution molecular karyotyping with SNP arrays to identify candidate genes for etiologically unexplained intellectual disability, we identified a 32-kb de novo in-frame deletion of the C-terminal helicase domain of the SMARCA2 gene in a patient with severe intellectual disability, epilepsy, sparse hair, prominent joints, and distinct facial anomalies. Sequencing of the gene in patients with a similar phenotype revealed de novo missense mutations in this domain in 2 further patients, pointing to a crucial role of the SMARCA2 C-terminal helicase domain. The clinical features observed in all 3 patients are typical of Nicolaides-Baraitser syndrome, an only rarely reported syndrome with mainly moderate to severe intellectual disability. Notably, one of our patients with a p.Gly1132Asp mutation showed typical morphological features but an exceptional good development with borderline overall IQ and learning difficulties, thus expanding the phenotypic spectrum of Nicolaides- Baraitser syndrome. During the last years, molecular karyotyping by either array-CGH or genomic profiling using SNP arrays has not only increased the diagnostic outcome in patients with intellectual disability harboring individual small chromosomal aberrations [de Vries et al., 2005; Hoyer et al., 2007] but also enabled the identification of several novel common microdeletion syndromes as reviewed by Slavotinek [2008]. Furthermore, it has also been proven to be a suitable method to identify novel disease-causing genes by initially identifying small aberrations affecting only one or few genes thus pointing to candidate genes in which subsequently mutations are identified in patients with similar phenotypes but without copy number variants. This strategy has been successful for well-known syndromic disorders such as autosomal- dominant CHARGE syndrome (MIM#214800) [Vissers et al., 2004] or autosomal recessive Peters Plus syndrome (MIM#261540) [Lesnik Oberstein et al., 2006] but also for relatively unknown entities such as Pitt-Hopkins syndrome (MIM#610954) [Amiel et al., 2007; Zweier et al., 2007], a recognizable severe intellectual disability syndrome that only came to a broad clinical awareness after identification of the underlying gene defect. Further examples are the identification of causative genes for an epileptic encephalopathy [Saitsu et al., 2008] or non-specific severe intellectual disability [Zweier et al., 2010]. In our systematic endeavor to identify new disease genes in patients with intellectual disability by molecular karyotyping, we identified a small de novo deletion within the SMARCA2 gene in a patient with short stature, intellectual disability, and distinct anomalies resembling Nicolaides-Baraitser syndrome (MIM ID %601358). By sequencing of patients with a similar phenotype, we additionally revealed missense mutations in the C-terminal helicase domain in this gene in 2 further patients. Our findings concur with another recent report identifying SMARCA2 as the gene underlying Nicolaides-Baraitser syndrome [Van Houdt et al., 2011].

Abstract

We present the architecture and three applications of the largest resolution image sensor based on single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) published to date. The sensor, fabricated in a high-voltage CMOS process, has a resolution of 512 x 128 pixels and a pitch of 24 ?m. The fill-factor of 5% can be increased to 30% with the use of microlenses. For precise control of the exposure and for time-resolved imaging, we use fast global gating signals to define exposure windows as small as 4 ns. The uniformity of the gate edges location is ~140 ps (FWHM) over the whole array, while in-pixel digital counting enables frame rates as high as 156 kfps. 1 juli 2012, Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND: Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) shows a great phenotypic variability between patients, ranging from perinatal demise to mildly affected adults. Autosomal dominant polycystic liver disease (PCLD) does not manifest in childhood. CASE-DIAGNOSIS/TREATMENT: A boy was reported with the co-occurrence of ARPKD and PCLD. He presented at the age of 16 days with pyelonephritis and urosepsis. Subsequent investigations showed enlarged kidneys and hyperechogenic renal medulla and liver parenchyma. Genetic analysis revealed compound heterozygous mutations in the PKHD1 gene (p.Arg496X and p.Ser1862Leu). After his mother was diagnosed with PCLD, the finding of a liver cyst on ultrasound prompted analysis of the PRKCSH gene, revealing a missense mutation (p.Arg139His). At the most recent follow-up at 13 years of age, the patient's course and clinical examination was uneventful with normal renal and liver function without evidence of portal hypertension. CONCLUSIONS: The patient with ARPKD and PCLD has so far demonstrated a benign clinical outcome, consistent with the great phenotypic variability of ARPKD and, apart from the liver cyst, asymptomatic manifestation of PCLD in childhood. However, close long-term follow-up is mandatory.

Abstract

Along with predicted climate change, increased risks for summer drought are projected for Central Europe. However, large knowledge gaps exist in terms of how drought events influence the short-term ecosystem carbon cycle. Here, we present results from 13CO2 pulse labeling experiments at an intensively managed lowland grassland in Switzerland. We investigated the effect of extreme summer drought on the short-term coupling of freshly assimilated photosynthates in shoots to roots as well as to soil CO2 efflux. Summer drought was simulated using rainout shelters during two field seasons (2010 and 2011). Soil CO2 efflux and its isotopic composition were measured with custom-built chambers coupled to a quantum cascade laser spectrometer (QCLAS-ISO, Aerodyne Research Inc., MA, USA). During the 90 min pulse labeling experiments, we added 99.9 atom % 13CO2 to the grass sward. In addition to the isotopic analysis of soil CO2 efflux, this label was traced over 31 days into bulk shoots, roots and soil. Drought reduced the incorporation of recently fixed carbon into the shoots, but increased the relative allocation of fresh assimilates below ground compared to the control grasslands. Contrary to our hypothesis, we did not find a change of allocation speed in response to drought. Although drought clearly reduced soil CO2 efflux rates, about 75% of total tracer uptake in control plots was lost via soil CO2 efflux during 19 days after pulse labeling, compared to only about 60% under drought conditions. Thus, the short-term coupling of above- and below-ground processes was reduced in response to summer drought. The occurrence of a natural spring drought in 2011 lead to comparable albeit weaker drought responses increasing the confidence in the generalizability of our findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
