Dissertação (mestrado) - Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Odontologia Bibliografia: f. 73-76 Resumo: A dor é um sintoma freqüente nas doenças bucais e causa impacto sobre o bem estar psicológico dos pais e das crianças (LOCKER; GRUSHKA, 1987). Embora a causa patológica principal das dores bucais seja a cárie, existem outras causas como trauma dos dentes, erupção dos dentes permanentes e a esfoliação dos dentes decíduos (SHEPHERD; NADANOVSKY; SHEIHAM, 1999). O levantamento de saúde no município de Pará de Minas não apresenta dados sobre a prevalência e impacto da dor de dente entre os escolares. Por ser reconhecida a gravidade do problema em outras populações, fez-se necessário levantar dados relativos à prevalência e a influência de fatores demográficos e clínicos. Sendo assim, este estudo teve o objetivo de mensurar a prevalência da dor de dente auto-relatada e do impacto na qualidade de vida de escolares de 12 e 13 anos de idade da área urbana da cidade de Pará de Minas, MG, Brasil. Além disto, a pesquisa avaliou a correlação da prevalência da dor de dente com os fatores demográficos, gênero, nível socioeconômico, renda familiar, e escolaridade do chefe de família. Neste estudo transversal as escolas e as crianças foram selecionadas aleatoriamente, sendo 286 alunos de escolas públicas e 79 de escolas particulares. Os pais das crianças sorteadas assinaram o termo de consentimento livre e esclarecido para que pudessem participar da pesquisa. As crianças foram submetidas a um exame clínico baseado no "Manual de Diagnóstico e Avaliacão : Saúde Bucal para Crianças e Adolescentes" (MINAS GERAIS, 1995), respeitando as normas da OMS, por uma examinadora previamente treinada e calibrada. Em seguida elas responderam um questionário para avaliar impacto dos problemas bucais no desempenho das atividades do seu cotidiano, o OIDP-infantil (Índice de impactos odontológicos no desempenho diário das atividades da criança). Para avaliar o nível socioeconômico, os pais/responsáveis responderam ao questionário ABA-ABIPEME, complementando com a informação da renda familiar. A taxa de resposta foi 80,3%, tendo participado 323 das 402 crianças convidadas. Dentre os problemas dentários mais prevalentes, percebidos pelas crianças, a dor de dente foi relatada por 31,3%. O valor de Kappa inter-examinador no estudo piloto revelou boa concordância. Durante o exame, 10% da amostra foi re-examinada, resultando em um valor de Kappa excelente. O exame clínico demonstrou que 38,1% dos participantes apresentou lesão de cárie incipiente de esmalte, 30,3% lesão de cárie de dentina e 3,7% lesão de cárie com envolvimento pulpar. Um total de 2,2% das crianças tinha dentes com extração indicada e 3,1% já havia extraído pelo menos um dente permanente. A presença de restaurações dentárias foi observada em 39,3% do total de crianças examinadas. As crianças que relataram algum impacto nas atividades do seu cotidiano somaram 93,8% da amostra, sendo que apenas 6,2% apresentou C-OIDP=0.
