Habitat monitoring in Europe is regulated by Article 17 of the Habitats Directive, which suggests the use of typical species to assess habitat conservation status. Yet, the Directive uses the term “typical” species but does not provide a definition, either for its use in reporting or for its use in impact assessments. To address the issue , a n online workshop was organized by the Italian Society for Vegetation Science (SISV) to shed light on the diversity of perspectives regarding the different concepts of typical species, and to discuss the possible implications for habitat monitoring. To this aim, we inquired 73 people with a very different degree of expertise in the field of vegetation science by means of a tailored survey composed of six questions. We analysed the data using Pearson's Chi-squared test to verify that the answers diverged from a random distribution and checked the effect of the degree of experience of the surveyees on the results. We found that most of the surveyees agreed on the use of the phytosociological method for habitat monitoring and of the diagnostic and characteristic species to evaluate the structural and functional conservation status of habitats. With this contribution, we shed light on the meaning of “typical” species in the context of habitat monitoring., G.Bo. was funded by the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano through the CONplant project (TN201H). Obiettivo specifico del progetto di dottorato è stato quello di proporre e testare su dati reali una metodologia adatta e valutare lo stato di conservazione di alcuni degli habitat più comuni nei siti della Rete Natura 2000 della regione Molise: (i) 92A0 ‘Foreste a galleria di Salix alba e Populus alba’; (ii) 9210 ‘Faggeti degli Appennini con Taxus e Ilex’; (iii) 6210(*) ‘Formazioni erbose secche seminaturali e facies coperte da cespugli su substrato calcareo (Festuco-Brometalia) (*stupenda fioritura di orchidee)’. Sono stati presi in esame alcuni dei SIC/ZPS della Rete Natura 2000 del Molise scelti in base alla loro distribuzione sul territorio e alla presenza e rappresentatività dei tre habitat, selezionati in quanto particolarmente significativi per la regione in termini di copertura e valenza biogeografica. Sono stati realizzati ex novo 130 rilievi floristici e fitosociologici nell’area di studio, 64 dei quali utilizzati per l’identificazione delle comunità vegetali. Sono stati inoltre aggiunti 179 rilievi tratti da bibliografia (in particolare aggiunti 55 per l’habitat 6210(*), 97 per l’habitat 92A0 relativi al versante adriatico dell’Italia centro-meridionale e 173 per l’habitat 9210* relativi all’Italia peninsulare) e 27 rilievi inediti per il fiume Biferno, forniti gentilmente da Paura e collaboratori (dati inediti), per il confronto con la composizione floristica per l’habitat a livello locale. Tali rilievi sono stati la base per la creazione di una banca dati vegetazionale in Turboveg 2.0 (Hennekens & Schaminee, 2001) i cui rilievi sono stati classificati per mezzo di tecniche di analisi multivariata, con il software Past versione 2.17 (Hammer et al., 2001), per ottenere gruppi omogenei da confrontare con le associazioni vegetali già definite. La valutazione dello stato di conservazione è stata effettuata rilievo per rilievo attraverso la stima della coerenza dell’habitat a livello floristico-vegetazionale e strutturale, per 63 rilievi dei 130 effettuati durante il corso del dottorato, per i quali erano misurabili tutti i parametri scelti per la valutazione. Tra gli indicatori di struttura, sono stati analizzati la struttura orizzontale e verticale della vegetazione e la presenza di legno morto, per i boschi; la struttura della vegetazione e l’invasione degli arbusti, per le praterie. Relativamente agli aspetti floristico-vegetazionali abbiamo selezionato i seguenti indicatori: la coerenza dei popolamenti rilevati con la vegetazione di riferimento espressa per mezzo del confronto tra ogni singolo rilievo e la combinazione specifica caratteristica (Braun-Blanquet, 1931), la presenza delle specie alloctone che diminuiscono il grado di naturalità, la ricchezza di specie arboree e la presenza di specie di interesse conservazionistico o biogeografico, che sottolineano la peculiarità del sito. Per i boschi in generale sono risultati fondamentali gli indicatori che evidenziassero una dinamica naturale in atto o una gestione attenta alla conservazione dell’habitat, in particolare, per i boschi ripariali dell’habitat 92A0 il mantenimento della struttura verticale, che si oppone all’ingresso di specie alloctone, per le faggete del 9210*, la ricchezza di specie arboree. Per valutare lo stato di conservazione dell’habitat 6210(*), la ricchezza di specie di interesse può dare un’indicazione speditiva sulle priorità di conservazione. The aim of this project was to propose and test a methodology designed at assessing the conservation status of three habitats in 13 SCI / SPA of Molise, selected due to their biogeographic importance and the area covered in the region: (i) 6210(*) - Semi-natural dry grasslands and scrubland facies on calcareous substrates (Festuco-Brometalia) (*important orchid sites); (ii) 9210* - Apennine beech forests with Taxus and Ilex; (iii) 92A0 - Salix alba and Populus alba galleries. The study area comprises SCIs and SPAs of Natura 2000 network of Molise, selected because of the presence and representativeness of the three habitats. Between 2010 and 2012 130 phytosociologic and floristic relevés have been carried out in the study area, 64 of them used for the identification of plants communities. Three hundred thirty-one bibliographic relevés (in particular 55 concerning the habitat 6210(*), 179 relevés on the habitat 9210* and 97 relevés on the habitat 92A0) and 27 unpublished relevés (Paura et al., 2010a) were added in order to produce a Turboveg Vegetation database (Hennekens & Schaminée, 2001). The relevés carried out in the study area were compared with the bibliography to identify plants communities. Relevés have been analysed by using Past version 2.17 (Hammer et al., 2001). Associations for the three habitats were identified and used as control for the floristic coherence. We also suggested some considerations on the evolution of riparian vegetation and in particular the relationship between the poplar groves and forests of ash ascribed to the Carici remotae-Fraxinetum oxycarpae Pedrotti 1970 corr. Pedrotti 1992. The assessment of the conservation status has been carried out for each relevé by estimating the characteristics of the habitat and the threats posed by human activities. We used floristic and vegetation indicators, that we obtained from 63 of the 130 phytosociological relevés carried out during the PhD project (19 relevés on the habitat 6210(*), 32 on the habitat 9210*, 22 on the habitat 92A0). Among the indicators (= parameters) suggested in literature we operate a selection and we adapted them at the local situation. With regard to the evaluation of the structure of the vegetation we identified different indicators depending on the plant community investigated. Through the forests indicators, we chosen parameters focused on the woody structure and richness of tree species; regarding to the grasslands i) the ratio of non-graminoids cover vs graminoids per relevé and ii) the shrub invasion. We selected the following floristic indicators: i) the floristic and vegetation coherence, expressed by the control of the “characteristic species composition” (Braun-Blanquet, 1931; Poldini & Sburlino, 2005); ii) the presence and cover of species of biogeographical interest or conservation, emphasizing the peculiarity of each site, and ii) the presence of alien species, which decreases the degree of naturalness. The resulting assessment is determined by the worst parameter. As regards the forests, structure indicators, aimed at showing the dynamics of the natural forest or the semi-natural management, resulted as the main parameters for the assessment. In particular concerning the habitat 92A0, the vertical structure opposing the spread of alien plant species; as regards to the 9210* richness of tree species has been identified as a key indicator for a favourable conservation status assessment. About the grasslands, the indicator which has been the most important in order to evaluate the conservation status and define prioritization has been the richness of species of interest.
