Abstract

The laser optogalvanic (LOG) spectrum of the (0,0) bands of the B 3[Pi] 3[Delta] transition of titanium oxide (TiO) has been observed. The TiO molecules were generated in a glow discharge by sputtering titanium metal and TiO2 from the inner surface of a hollow cathode. Possible mechanisms for the molecular LOG effect are discussed.

2. Rotational analysis of the red electronic emission spectrum of molybdenum nitride (MoN)

Abstract

A system of emission bands in the red region of the optical spectrum has been identified as due to the species MoN. The system was generated by the microwave (2450 MHz) excitation of a flowing mixture of MoCl5 and molecular nitrogen in a stream of helium but is also observed in a DC arc in air between molybdenum electrodes. One of the Q-form branches has previously been assumed to be an atomic line of Mo I. The system has been assigned as the 0, 0 band of a 4[Pi](a) --> X4[Sigma]-(a) transition, with a large zero-field splitting of the ground 4[Sigma]- term (~86 cm-1). A preliminary search has been made to detect the presence of MoN in M-type stars.

3. Remote observations of effluents from small building smokestacks using FTIR spectroscopy

Abstract

Infrared emission spectra of effluents from the smokestacks of typical small buildings were observed remotely using a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. The primary purpose of the study was to determine the best method for distinguishing gas from oil as the fuel being burned in a building’s furnace. Spectral pattern recognition techniques were employed to suppress the strong and highly varying background to the extent required to extract the very weak molecular emission features from the effluent spectra. It was found that several prominent H_2O and CO_2 transitions could be used to discriminate between the combustion products of gas and oil by determining the H_2O/CO_2 concentration ratio in the exhaust gases.
