Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate privacy concerns arising from the rapidly increasing advancements and use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology and the challenges of existing privacy regimes to ensure the on-going protection of an individual’s sensitive private information. The authors illustrate this through a case study of energy smart meters and suggest a novel combination of four solutions to strengthen privacy protection. Design/methodology/approach: The authors illustrate how, through smart meter obtained energy data, home energy providers can use AI to reveal private consumer information such as households’ electrical appliances, their time and frequency of usage, including number and model of appliance. The authors show how this data can further be combined with other data to infer sensitive personal information such as lifestyle and household income due to advances in AI technologies. Findings: The authors highlight data protection and privacy concerns which are not immediately obvious to consumers due to the capabilities of advanced AI technology and its ability to extract sensitive personal information when applied to large overlapping granular data sets. Social implications: The authors question the adequacy of existing privacy legislation to protect sensitive inferred consumer data from AI-driven technology. To address this, the authors suggest alternative solutions. Originality/value: The original value of this paper is that it illustrates new privacy issues brought about by advances in AI, failings in current privacy legislation and implementation and opens the dialog between stakeholders to protect vulnerable consumers.

UNLABELLED: To use experience-based co-design to identify the key design requirements of a peer support model for critical care survivors; understand the use of the experience-based co-design method from clinician, patients, and family perspectives. DESIGN: Using experience-based co-design, qualitative data about participants' preferences for a peer support model were generated via workshops. Participants' perspectives of experience-based co-design were evaluated with focus groups. SETTING: University-affiliated hospital in Melbourne, Australia. SUBJECTS: Snowball sampling was used to recruit clinicians from across the care spectrum (ICU-community); critical care survivors and nominated family members were recruited using convenience sampling. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Consensus on a peer support model was reached through the experience-based co-design process, with the following key themes: 1) socialization and group cohesion; 2) management of potential risks; and 3) individualized needs of patients and families. Evaluation of participants' perspectives of the experience-based co-design method identified five key themes: 1) participation as a positive experience; 2) emotional engagement in the process; 3) learning from patients and family members; 4) feeling heard; and 5) practical challenges of experience-based co-design and readiness to participate. CONCLUSIONS: Experience-based co-design was a feasible approach to developing a peer support model for use with critical care survivors and was well received by participants. Future testing of the co-designed peer support model in a pilot randomized controlled trial will enhance understanding of peer support in critical care and the use of experience-based co-design as a design methodology.

Introduction: An increasing number of individuals with dementia drive. Many argue that those with mild dementia are safe to do so. This study explored the attitudes, knowledge and behaviour of hospital-based doctors towards drivers with dementia. Methods: 20 doctors in a regional hospital in NSW were surveyed using a 20-item questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were applied to the data collected. Results: Half were unaware of the Austroads national guidelines; 60% incorrectly believed that they were legally obliged to report all unsafe drivers in NSW. Most felt that drivers with dementia delay driving retirement for a wide range of reasons. All participants expressed a desire for changes to current clinical practices. Conclusion: Drivers with dementia require guidance from their treating physicians. This study found that there is room for improvement in the attitudes, knowledge and practices of hospital-based doctors who treated drivers with dementia. Options for improved road safety and avenues for future research are discussed.

Potential development schemes include various combinations of deep or shallow mined caverns with different span sizes and access options. The preferred scheme is 36 shallow, mined room-and-pillar caverns with 20 m spans. Shafts would provide access to the two existing science parks. (C) 74708 TOC#28, This report details a project to study the relationship between highway design and human behavior as influenced by roadside environments. The project was developed in two phases. In the visualization phase, computer simulation was used to model an actual segment of urban highway planned for reconstruction in Tofte, Minn. Using a driving simulator, project design team members test drove the highway reconstruction project and evaluated the planned elements. In an experimentation phase, researchers tested drivers' responses to different design scenarioes to identify the architectural ad aesthetic elements with the greatest potential for calming or slowing traffic. Results indicated that the visualization phase increased communication among project team members and state agencies, facilitated problem identification-resolution strategy development, and contributed to decision making concerning potential design options and design elements. Data also indicated that white pavement treatments produced desirable traffic calming effects. Analyses of drivers' speed patterns indicated a consistent speed profile, characterized by both decreases and increases in speed. The report concludes with recommendations for the expanded use of visualization in general, and the implementation of white pavement treatments in the target reconsruction project specifically. It also recommends further consideration of landscape architecture treatments.
