The Internet of Things (IoT) is undeniably transforming the way that organizations communicate and organize everyday businesses and industrial procedures. Its adoption has proven well suited for sectors that manage a large number of assets and coordinate complex and distributed processes. This survey analyzes the great potential for applying IoT technologies (i.e., data-driven applications or embedded automation and intelligent adaptive systems) to revolutionize modern warfare and provide benefits similar to those in industry. It identifies scenarios where Defense and Public Safety (PS) could leverage better commercial IoT capabilities to deliver greater survivability to the warfighter or first responders, while reducing costs and increasing operation efficiency and effectiveness. This article reviews the main tactical requirements and the architecture, examining gaps and shortcomings in existing IoT systems across the military field and mission-critical scenarios. The review characterizes the open challenges for a broad deployment and presents a research roadmap for enabling an affordable IoT for defense and PS., Comment: 44 pages, 14 figures. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a distributed system of physical objects that requires the seamless integration of hardware (e.g., sensors, actuators, electronics) and network communications in order to collect and exchange data. IoT smart objects need to be somehow identified to determine the origin of the data and to automatically detect the elements around us. One of the best positioned technologies to perform identification is RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), which in the last years has gained a lot of popularity in applications like access control, payment cards or logistics. Despite its popularity, RFID security has not been properly handled in numerous applications. To foster security in such applications, this article includes three main contributions. First, in order to establish the basics, a detailed review of the most common flaws found in RFID-based IoT systems is provided, including the latest attacks described in the literature. Second, a novel methodology that eases the detection and mitigation of such flaws is presented. Third, the latest RFID security tools are analyzed and the methodology proposed is applied through one of them (Proxmark 3) to validate it. Thus, the methodology is tested in different scenarios where tags are commonly used for identification. In such systems it was possible to clone transponders, extract information, and even emulate both tags and readers. Therefore, it is shown that the methodology proposed is useful for auditing security and reverse engineering RFID communications in IoT applications. We present an innovative approach that simultaneously enables direct antenna frequency-hopped M-ary frequency shift keying (DAFH-MFSK) modulation and beamsteering through the use of time-modulated arrays (TMAs). The distinctive feature of our approach lies in the modulation of the TMA excitations with binary periodic sequences, which can be easily frequency-adjusted and time-delayed to simultaneously allow for DAFH-MFSK direct antenna modulation and beamsteering. We consider the transmission of spatially correlated analog information in a wireless sensor network (WSN) through fading single-input and multiple-output (SIMO) multiple access channels (MACs) with low-latency requirements. A lattice-based analog joint source-channel coding (JSCC) approach is considered where vectors of consecutive source symbols are encoded at each sensor using an n-dimensional lattice and then transmitted to a multiantenna central node. We derive a minimum mean square error (MMSE) decoder that accounts for both the multidimensional structure of the encoding lattices and the spatial correlation. In addition, a sphere decoder is considered to simplify the required searches over the multidimensional lattices. Different lattice-based mappings are approached and the impact of their size and density on performance and latency is analyzed. Results show that, while meeting low-latency constraints, lattice-based analog JSCC provides performance gains and higher reliability with respect to the state-of-the-art JSCC schemes.

An innovative approach to hybrid analog-digital precoding for the downlink of wideband massive MIMO systems is developed. The proposed solution, termed Rank-Constrained Coordinate Ascent (RCCA), starts seeking the full-digital precoder that maximizes the achievable sum-rate over all the frequency subcarriers while constraining the rank of the overall transmit covariance matrix. The frequency-flat constraint on the analog part of the hybrid precoder and the non-convex nature of the rank constraint are circumvented by transforming the original problem into a more suitable one, where a convenient structure for the transmit covariance matrix is imposed. Such structure makes the resulting full-digital precoder particularly adequate for its posterior analog-digital factorization. An additional problem formulation to determine an appropriate power allocation policy according to the rank constraint is also provided. The numerical results show that the proposed method outperforms baseline solutions even for practical scenarios with high spatial diversity.

The combination of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems and intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) is foreseen as a critical enabler of beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G. In this work, two different approaches are considered for the joint optimization of the IRS phase-shift matrix and MIMO precoders of an IRS-assisted multi-stream (MS) multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) system. Both approaches aim to maximize the system sum-rate for every channel realization. The first proposed solution is a novel contextual bandit (CB) framework with continuous state and action spaces called deep contextual bandit-oriented deep deterministic policy gradient (DCB-DDPG). The second is an innovative deep reinforcement learning (DRL) formulation where the states, actions, and rewards are selected such that the Markov decision process (MDP) property of reinforcement learning (RL) is appropriately met. Both proposals perform remarkably better than state-of-the-art heuristic methods in scenarios with high multi-user interference.

This work focuses on wideband intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided multiuser MIMO systems. One of the major challenges of this scenario is the joint design of the frequency-dependent base station (BS) precoder and user filters, and the IRS phase-shift matrix which is frequency flat and common to all the users. In addition, we consider that the channel state information (CSI) is imperfect at both the transmitter and the receivers. A statistical model for the imperfect CSI is developed and exploited for the system design. A minimum mean square error (MMSE) approach is followed to determine the IRS phase-shift matrix, the transmit precoders, and the receiving filters. The broadcast (BC)- multiple access channel (MAC) duality is used to solve the optimization problem following an alternating minimization approach. Numerical results show that the proposed approach leads to substantial performance gains with respect to baseline strategies that neglect the inter-user interference and do not optimize the IRS phase-shift matrix. Further performance gains are obtained when incorporating into the system design the statistical information of the channel estimation errors.

Doubly-selective channels, such as those that occur when the transmitter and the receiver move relative to each other at high speeds, are a key scenario for fifth generation (5G) cellular systems, which are mostly based in the use of the orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. In this paper, we consider an OFDM system using quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) symbols and we show that, when transmitting over deterministic doubly-selective channels, the inter-carrier interference (ICI) affecting a symbol can be well approximated by a complex-valued normal distribution. Based on this, we derive a lower bound for the link capacity using the Shannon-Hartley theorem. Finally, we provide an approximation of the bit error probability (BEP) using the well-known BEP expressions for Gray-coded QAM constellations over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels, and show numerical results that confirm that the proposed BEP expression approximates accurately the bit error ratio (BER) of the OFDM system for standardized channel models. The proposed closed-form analytical expressions for the capacity and the BEP do not only allow for discarding the need of computationally-costly Monte-Carlo system simulations, but also provide a theoretical framework to optimize the system parameters directly impacting on the achievable performance., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, published in IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology

We propose an algorithm for joint precoding and user selection in multiple-input multiple-output systems with extremely-large aperture arrays, assuming realistic channel conditions and imperfect channel estimates. The use of long-term channel state information (CSI) for user scheduling, and a proper selection of the set of users for which CSI is updated allow for obtaining an improved achievable sum spectral efficiency. We introduce DBS, a new technique for user selection in downlink multi-user communications with extra-large (XL) antenna arrays. DBS categorizes users according to their equivalent distance to the antenna array. Such categorization effectively accounts for inter-user interference while largely reducing the computational burden. Results show that (i) DBS achieves the same performance as the reference zero-forcing beamforming scheme with a lower complexity; (ii) a simplified version of DBS achieves a similar performance when realistic spherical-wavefront (SW) propagation features are considered; (iii) SW propagation brings additional degrees of freedom, which allows for increasing the number of served users., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication. A method for channel estimation in wideband massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems using covariance identification is developed. The method is useful for Frequency-Division Duplex (FDD) at either sub-6GHz or millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency bands and takes into account the beam squint effect caused by the large bandwidth of the signals. The method relies on the slow time variation of the channel covariance matrix and allows for the utilization of very short training sequences thanks to the exploitation of the channel structure, both in the covariance matrix identification and the channel estimation stages. This work jointly addresses user scheduling and precoder/combiner design in the downlink of a wideband millimeter wave (mmWave) communications system. We consider Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) modulation to overcome channel frequency selectivity and obtain a number of equivalent narrowband channels. Hence, the main challenge is that the analog preprocessing network is frequency flat and common to all the users at the transmitter side. Moreover, the effect of the signal bandwidth over the Uniform Linear Array (ULA) steering vectors has to be taken into account to design the hybrid precoders and combiners. The proposed algorithmic solution is based on Linear Successive Allocation (LISA), which greedily allocates streams to different users and computes the corresponding precoders and combiners. By taking into account the rank limitations imposed by the hardware at transmission and reception, the performance loss in terms of achievable sum rate for the hybrid approach is negligible. This work addresses the design of optimal linear transmit filters for the Multiple Input-Multiple Output (MIMO) Broadcast Channel (BC) when several spatial streams are allocated to each user.We also consider that the Channel State Information (CSI) is perfect at the receivers but is only partial at the transmitter. A statistical model for the partial CSI is assumed and exploited for the filter design. Similarly to the single-stream per user case, the problem is solved via Mean Square Error (MSE) dualities and interference functions. However, including more streams per user involves an additional complexity level since we must determine how to distribute the per-user rates among the streams. Such problem is solved using a projected gradient algorithm.

We consider the design of linear precoders and receivers in a Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) Broadcast Channel (BC). We aim at minimizing the transmit power while fullfiling a set of per-user Quality-of-Service (QoS) constraints expressed in terms of per-user average rate requirements. The Channel State Information (CSI) is assumed to be perfectly known at the receivers but only partially at the transmitter. To solve the problem we transform the QoS constraints into Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) constraints. We then leverage the MSE duality between the BC and the Multiple Access Channel (MAC), as well as standard interference functions in the dual MAC, to perform power minimization by means of an Alternating Optimization (AO) algorithm. Problem feasibility is also studied to determine whether the QoS constraints can be fulfilled or not. Finally, we present an algorithm to balance the average rates and manage situations that may be unfeasible or lead to an unacceptably high transmit power.

In this paper we present an experimental study on the performance of spatial Interference Alignment (IA) in indoor wireless local area network scenarios that use Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) according to the physical-layer specifications of the IEEE 802.11a standard. Experiments have been carried out using a wireless network testbed capable of implementing a 3-user MIMO interference channel. We have implemented IA decoding schemes that can be designed according to distinct criteria (e.g. zero-forcing or MaxSINR). The measurement methodology has been validated considering practical issues like the number of OFDM training symbols used for channel estimation or feedback time. In case of asynchronous users, a time-domain IA decoding filter is also compared to its frequency-domain counterpart. We also evaluated the performance of IA from bit error rate measurement-based results in comparison to different time-division multiple access transmission schemes. The comparison includes single- and multiple-antenna systems transmitting over the dominant mode of the MIMO channel. Our results indicate that spatial IA is suitable for practical indoor scenarios in which wireless channels often exhibit relatively large coherence times.
