The use of industrial by-products to produce new types of cement-substitute binders is gaining significant momentum, particularly through the alkaline activation technique. However, the exact curing conditions that should be considered with each binder variation have not been fully understood yet. The aim of the present work is thus the statistical analysis of the effects of curing conditions (humidity and temperature) on the mechanical response (uniaxial compression strength and elastic modulus) of different aggregate/binder weight ratios. Five blends of solid mine tailings (as an aggregate) and fly ash (as a precursor), both collected from the Portuguese industry, were activated with sodium hydroxide solution and cured under nine different temperature and humidity combinations. The data analysis was performed using multivariate analysis of variance and analysis of variance, followed by Tukey’s post hoc test, whenever appropriate. Results show that the curing humidity factor showed a lower impact than the curing temperature. Although the increase in temperature and decrease in humidity produced higher compression strengths, the best results were obtained with a specific combination of both (60°C and 50% relative humidity). In general, the increase in tailings’ content produced a reduction in compression strength, but only for values above 20% (by weight of the sum of solids).

Dissertação de Mestrado em Engenharia Mecânica Esta dissertação tem como objetivo contribuir para a reflexão sobre a filosofia Lean nos serviços de saúde. Será alvo de estudo um serviço de saúde do Centro Hospitalar de Trás os Montes e Alto Douro (CHTMAD) no qual se pretende otimizar o processo de reposição diária, mais especificamente ajustar as quantidades de produtos que são repostas atualmente nos serviços. Para além do problema anterior será analisada a viabilidade de este sistema de reposição ser alargado a um maior leque de produtos. Para dar resposta a estes problemas serão estudados os processos envolventes e analisadas novas hipóteses para o mesmo fim, entre elas será posto em causa o pressuposto da reposição diária ser a melhor forma de distribuição de material. De modo a dar resposta aos desafios levantados anteriormente conta-se com o contributo das ferramentas que o Lean Thinking possui, estas serão auxiliadas por princípios da gestão de stocks e pela otimização de problemas através de modelação. Os resultados deste estudo demonstram a utilidade do Lean Thinking no que diz respeito a qualidade do serviço prestado uma vez que as tarefas passam a ser realizadas por quem é mais indicado para tal, ainda a nível económico podemos denotar vantagens pois permite comparar algumas hipóteses de reposição de material, hipóteses essas sustentadas pela teoria de gestão de stocks e auxiliadas por modelos de previsão e otimização. The main goal of this dissertation project is to give an innovative insight on the Lean philosophy, used in healthcare systems. Its tools, associated with stock managing principles as well as modulation and optimization systems will be studied to access their efficiency. A ward of Centro Hospitalar de Trás-Os-Montes e Alto Douro (CHAMTAD) was chosen to take part for the optimization of the products distribution system, as well as to study the viability of its application on other sets of products. Furthermore, we studied the range of processes involving not only these systems, considering the possibility of the creation of new means for the achievement of the same purpose. Results show that the Lean Thinking approach presents great value regarding the improvement of the quality of the services. The new proposals show economic benefits, due to the possibility of comparison between the various options presented for stock distribution systems and due to the fact that these systems work together with prediction and optimization models.

Dissertação de Mestrado em Engenharia Florestal O sobreiro é uma espécie comum no sul de Portugal, em povoamentos conhecidos por montados, já a norte do rio Tejo, os povoamentos de sobreiro são denominados de sobreirais, caraterizados por densidades mais elevadas. Esta é a espécie mais importante da floresta portuguesa daí ser considerada como símbolo nacional dando refúgio a espécies faunísticas e florísticas mais caraterísticas destes povoamentos. A produção de cortiça é uma fonte muito importante de receitas, nestes ecossistemas, os quais se situam, maioritariamente, na região do Mediterrâneo. Em Portugal, estes ecossistemas ocupam cerca de 32% da área florestal de sobreiro do mundo (Costa et al. 2008; González- García et al. 2013). Por isso a importância em aumentar a densidade de ocupação desta espécie no País. Este estudo procurou colmatar a falta de informação sobre qual deverá ser o valor adequado de densidade do sobreiro por unidade de área, para responder à necessidade de matéria-prima para a indústria corticeira. Em termos de procedimento, recorreu-se à análise da relação alométrica entre número de árvores por hectare e diâmetro quadrático médio para povoamento de sobreiro. A análise teve como suporte dados do Inventário Florestal Nacional 4 e 5, e ainda parcelas de estudo cedidas pelo Professor Nuno Ribeiro da Universidade de Évora. Este é um trabalho inovador na área da modelação para o sobreiro, pois é o primeiro estudo para a espécie, em Portugal, acerca da linha de máxima densidade. Quercus suber, commonly called the cork oak is a common species in southern Portugal, in stands known as “montados”, but while in locations north of the Tejo river, the cork oak stands are called “sobreirais”, characterized by higher densities. This is the most important species of the Portuguese forest then be considered as a national symbol and giving a home to faunal and floristic species most characteristic of these stands. The production of cork is a very important source of revenue in these ecosystems, which are located mainly in the Mediterranean region. In Portugal, these ecosystems occupy about 32% of the total forest area of cork oak in the world (Costa et al 2008; González-García et al 2013). Hence the importance of increasing the occupation density of this species in the country. This study sought to address the lack of information on what should be the appropriate value of cork oak density per unit area, to meet the need for raw material for the cork industry. In terms of procedure, it was done an analysis of the allometric relation between the number of trees per hectare and mean square diameter for the stands of cork oak. The analysis was supported by data from the National Forest Inventory 4 and 5, and study plots assigned by Professor Nuno Ribeiro of the University of Évora. This is a groundbreaking work in the field of modelling for the cork oak as it is the first study for the species, in Portugal, on the maximum density line.

Dissertação de Mestrado em Engenharia Florestal A floresta assume uma grande importância socioeconómica e ambiental pelo que é necessário tomar boas decisões na gestão desta, de modo a valorizá-la e a cuidar dos ecossistemas. Em Portugal, o uso florestal corresponde a 34.5% da área continental, correspondendo ao uso dominante do território. Uma das espécies com maior área de ocupação é o pinheiro-bravo (Pinus pinaster), sendo essencial uma gestão sustentável destes povoamentos, pela sua importância a nível económico e ambiental. De modo a melhorar a gestão dos povoamentos florestais surgiu, nos inícios dos anos 80, a aplicação de uma ferramenta computorizada de auxílio à gestão florestal. Designados de Sistemas de Suporte à Decisão (SSD), são um recurso capaz de suportar atividades de tomada de decisões, através da ligação de dados com modelos matemáticos e outras ferramentas de suporte que vão auxiliar os decisores na resolução de problemas de forma eficaz e produtiva. Esta dissertação visa dar a conhecer o significado e a aplicação dos Sistemas de Suporte à Decisão, assim como apresentar a sua estrutura e evolução desde a criação até à atualidade, com base numa pesquisa teórica do respetivo estado de arte. Numa segunda parte, apresenta-se a descrição de dois casos de estudo, especificamente o Heureka SSD e o SADfLOR web-based que visam ilustrar um bom exemplo da aplicação dos Sistemas de Suporte à Decisão na área da gestão florestal. Na terceira e última parte deste trabalho, concretiza-se o objetivo prático deste trabalho, com a proposta de conceção de um SSD para Pinus pinaster em território nacional que consiga ser eficaz e com capacidade de resposta às necessidades atuais das florestas Portuguesas. Um SSD com perspetivas de ser utilizado como instrumento de tomada de decisão nos processos de agendamento e previsão da realização de intervenções nos povoamentos florestais e na identificação e resolução de problemas de modo a melhorar a eficiência, produtividade e facilitar a gestão dos povoamentos de pinheiro bravo. The forest assumes a great socioeconomic and environmental importance and it is necessary to make good decisions in its management, in order to value and care of the ecosystems. In Portugal, forest use corresponds to 34.5% of the continental area, thus being the dominant use of the territory. One of the species with the highest occupation area is Pinus pinaster (maritime pine) and it is essential a sustainable management, for its economic and environmental importance. In order to improve the forest stands management emerged, in the beginning of 1980s, the application of a computerized tool to aid forest management. Designated as Decision Support Systems (SSD), they are a resource capable of supporting decision-making activities by linking data with mathematical models and other support tools that will assist decision makers in problem-solving in an effective and productive way. This dissertation aims to show the meaning and application of Decision Support Systems as well as to present its structure and evolution since its creation to the present, based on the theoretical research of the respective state of the art. In a second part, it is presented a description of two study cases, specifically the Heureka SSD and the Web-based SADfLOR, which aim to illustrate a good example of the application of Decision Support Systems in forest management. In the third and final part of this work, the practical objective of this work is achieved, with a proposal of design an SSD for Pinus pinaster in the national territory that can be effective and capable of responding to the current needs of Portuguese forests. An SSD with prospects of being used as an instrument of decision-making in the processes of scheduling and forecasting the execution of interventions in the forest stands and in the identification and resolution of problems to improve the effectiveness, the productivity and facilitate the pine stands management.
