Due to the constraints on power supply and limited encryption capability, data security based on physical layer security (PLS) techniques in backscatter communications has attracted a lot of attention. In this work, we propose to enhance PLS in a full-duplex symbiotic radio (FDSR) system with a proactive eavesdropper, which may overhear the information and interfere legitimate communications simultaneously by emitting attack signals. To deal with the eavesdroppers, we propose a security strategy based on pseudo-decoding and artificial noise (AN) injection to ensure the performance of legitimate communications through forward noise suppression. A novel AN signal generation scheme is proposed using a pseudo-decoding method, where AN signal is superimposed on data signal to safeguard the legitimate channel. The phase control in the forward noise suppression scheme and the power allocation between AN and data signals are optimized to maximize security throughput. The formulated problem can be solved via problem decomposition and alternate optimization algorithms. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme in terms of security throughput and attack mitigation performance.

Semantic communication has gained significant attention recently due to its advantages in achieving higher transmission efficiency by focusing on semantic information instead of bit-level information. However, current AI-based semantic communication methods require digital hardware for implementation. With the rapid advancement on reconfigurable intelligence surfaces (RISs), a new approach called on-the-air diffractional deep neural networks (D$^2$NN) can be utilized to enable semantic communications on the wave domain. This paper proposes a new paradigm of RIS-based on-the-air semantic communications, where the computational process occurs inherently as wireless signals pass through RISs. We present the system model and discuss the data and control flows of this scheme, followed by a performance analysis using image transmission as an example. In this article, physical layer security (PLS) in an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multiple-input multiple-output multiple antenna eavesdropper (MIMOME) system is studied. In particular, we consider a practical scenario without instantaneous channel state information (CSI) of the eavesdropper and assume that the eavesdropping channel is a Rayleigh channel. To reduce the complexity of currently available IRS-assisted PLS schemes, we propose a low-complexity deep learning (DL) based approach to design transmitter beamforming and IRS jointly, where the precoding vector and phase shift matrix are designed to minimize the secrecy outage probability. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed DL-based approach can achieve a similar performance of that with conventional alternating optimization (AO) algorithms for a significant reduction in the computational complexity.

This article investigates physical layer security (PLS) in reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted multiple-input multiple-output multiple-antenna-eavesdropper (MIMOME) channels. Existing researches ignore the problem that secrecy rate can not be calculated if the eavesdropper's instantaneous channel state information (CSI) is unknown. Furthermore, without the secrecy rate expression, beamforming and phase shifter optimization with the purpose of PLS enhancement is not available. To address these problems, we first give the expression of secrecy outage probability for any beamforming vector and phase shifter matrix as the RIS-assisted PLS metric, which is measured based on the eavesdropper's statistical CSI. Then, with the aid of the expression, we formulate the minimization problem of secrecy outage probability that is solved via alternately optimizing beamforming vectors and phase shift matrices. In the case of single-antenna transmitter or single-antenna legitimate receiver, the proposed alternating optimization (AO) scheme can be simplified to reduce computational complexity. Finally, it is demonstrated that the secrecy outage probability is significantly reduced with the proposed methods compared to current RIS-assisted PLS systems.

In this paper, we propose a secure computation offloading scheme (SCOS) in intelligently connected vehicle (ICV) networks, aiming to minimize overall latency of computing via offloading part of computational tasks to nearby servers in small cell base stations (SBSs), while securing the information delivered during offloading and feedback phases via physical layer security. Existing computation offloading schemes usually neglected time-varying characteristics of channels and their corresponding secrecy rates, resulting in an inappropriate task partition ratio and a large secrecy outage probability. To address these issues, we utilize an ergodic secrecy rate to determine how many tasks are offloaded to the edge, where ergodic secrecy rate represents the average secrecy rate over all realizations in a time-varying wireless channel. Adaptive wiretap code rates are proposed with a secrecy outage constraint to match time-varying wireless channels. In addition, the proposed secure beamforming and artificial noise (AN) schemes can improve the ergodic secrecy rates of uplink and downlink channels even without eavesdropper channel state information (CSI). Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed schemes have a shorter system delay than the strategies neglecting time-varying characteristics.

Sparse code multiple access (SCMA), which helps improve spectrum efficiency (SE) and enhance connectivity, has been proposed as a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme for 5G systems. In SCMA, codebook design determines system overload ratio and detection performance at a receiver. In this paper, an SCMA codebook design approach is proposed based on uniquely decomposable constellation group (UDCG). We show that there are $N+1 (N \geq 1)$ constellations in the proposed UDCG, each of which has $M (M \geq 2)$ constellation points. These constellations are allocated to users sharing the same resource. Combining the constellations allocated on multiple resources of each user, we can obtain UDCG-based codebook sets. Bit error ratio (BER) performance will be discussed in terms of coding gain maximization with superimposed constellations and UDCG-based codebooks. Simulation results demonstrate that the superimposed constellation of each resource has large minimum Euclidean distance (MED) and meets uniquely decodable constraint. Thus, BER performance of the proposed codebook design approach outperforms that of the existing codebook design schemes in both uncoded and coded SCMA systems, especially for large-size codebooks.

With 5G mobile communication systems been commercially rolled out, research discussions on next generation mobile systems, i.e., 6G, have started. On the other hand, vehicular technologies are also evolving rapidly, from connected vehicles as coined by V2X (vehicle to everything) to autonomous vehicles to the combination of the two, i.e., the networks of connected autonomous vehicles (CAV). How fast the evolution of these two areas will go head-in-head is of great importance, which is the focus of this paper. Based on a brief overview on the technological evolution of V2X to CAV and 6G key technologies, this paper explores two complementary research directions, namely, 6G for CAVs versus CAVs for 6G. The former investigates how various 6G key enablers, such as THz, cell free communication and artificial intelligence (AI), can be utilized to provide CAV mission-critical services. The latter discusses how CAVs can facilitate effective deployment and operation of 6G systems. This paper attempts to investigate the interactions between the two technologies to spark more research efforts in these areas.

The existing investigations on artificial noise (AN) security systems assumed that only null spaces is used to send AN signals, and all eigen-subchannels should be used to transmit messages. Our previous work proposed an AN scheme that allocates some of eigen-subchannels to transmit AN signals for improving secrecy rates. Nevertheless, our previous work considered only uncorrelated MIMO Rayleigh fading channels. In fact, the correlations among antennas exist in realistic scattering channel environments. In this paper, we extend our previous AN scheme to spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channels at both legitimate receiver- and eavesdropper-sides and derive an exact theoretical expression for the ergodic secrecy rate of the AN scheme, along with an approximate analysis. Both numerical and simulation results show that the proposed AN scheme offers a higher ergodic secrecy rate than the existing schemes, revealing a fact that the correlation among eavesdropper's antennas can potentially improve the secrecy rate of an MIMO system.

Ultra-dense network (UDN) is one of the enabling technologies to achieve 1000-fold capacity increase in 5G communication systems, and the application of joint transmission (JT) is an effective method to deal with severe inter-cell interferences in UDNs. However, most works done for performance analysis on JT schemes in the literature were based largely on simulation results due to the difficulties in quantitatively identifying the numbers of desired and interfering transmitters. In this work, we are motivated to propose an analytical approach to investigate the performance of JT schemes with a unified approach based on stochastic geometry, which is in particular useful for studying different JT methods and conventional transmission schemes without JT. Using the proposed approach, we can unveil the statistic characteristics (i.e., expectation, moment generation function, variance) of desired signal and interference powers of a given user equipment (UE), and thus system performances, such as average signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), and area spectral efficiency, can be evaluated analytically. The simulation results are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed unified approach.

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is one of the most promising technologies in fifth generation (5G) mobile networks due to its access to a large amount of available spectrum resources. Despite the theoretical potential of a high data rate, there are still several key technical challenges with using mmWave in mobile networks, such as severe pathloss, high penetration loss, narrow beamwidth, etc. Hence, accurate and reliable knowledge of mmWave channel propagation characteristics is essential for developing 5G wireless communication systems. In this article, the fundamental characteristics of mmWave are first presented. Then, two main channel modeling methods are discussed. Finally, in order to investigate the channel characteristics at the mmWave band, measurement campaigns using three different large-scale array topologies are carried out and the typical channel parameters are extracted and analyzed.

Nowadays, computation is playing an increasingly more important role in the future generation of computer and communication networks, as exemplified by the recent progress in software defined networking (SDN) for wired networks as well as cloud radio access networks (C-RAN) and mobile cloud computing (MCC) for wireless networks. This paper proposes a unified concept, i.e., computation diversity, to describe the impact and diverse forms of the computation resources on both wired and wireless communications. By linking the computation resources to the communication networks based on quality of service (QoS) requirements, we can show how computation resources influence the networks. Moreover, by analyzing the different functionalities of computation resources in SDN, C-RAN, and MCC, we can show diverse and flexible form that the computation resources present in different networks. The study of computation diversity can provide guidance to the future networks design, i.e., how to allocate the resources jointly between computation (e.g., CPU capacity) and communication (e.g., bandwidth), and thereby saving system energy and increase users' experiences., Comment: Accepted by IEEE Wireless Communications

In this article, a network model incorporating both line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) transmissions is proposed to investigate impacts of blockages in urban areas on heterogeneous network coverage performance. Results show that co-existence of NLOS and LOS transmissions has a significant impact on network performance. Wireless information and power transfer (WIPT) enables more sustainable and resilient communications owing to the fact that it avoids frequent battery charging and replacement. However, it also suffers from possible information interception due to the open nature of wireless channels. Compared to traditional secure communications, secrecy wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) carries several distinct characteristics. On one hand, wireless power transfer may increase the vulnerability of eavesdropping, since a power receiver, as a potential eavesdropper, usually has a shorter access distance than an information receiver. On the other hand, wireless power transfer can be exploited to enhance wireless security. This article reviews the security issues in various SWIPT scenarios, with an emphasis on revealing the corresponding challenges and opportunities for implementing SWIPT. Furthermore, we provide a survey on a variety of physical layer security techniques to improve secrecy performance. In particular, we propose to use massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques to enhance power transfer efficiency and secure information transmission simultaneously. With growing popularity of mobile Internet, providing secure wireless services has become a critical issue. Physical layer security (PHY-security) has been recognized as an effective means to enhance wireless security by exploiting wireless medium characteristics, e.g., fading, noise, and interference. A particularly interesting PHY-security technology is cooperative relay due to the fact that it helps to provide distributed diversity and shorten access distance. This article offers a tutorial on various multi-antenna relaying technologies to improve security at physical layer. The state of the art research results on multi-antenna relay aided PHY-security as well as some secrecy performance optimization schemes are presented. In particular, we focus on large-scale MIMO (LS-MIMO) relaying technology, which is effective to tackle various challenging issues for implementing wireless PHY-security, such as short-distance interception without eavesdropper channel state information (CSI) and with imperfect legitimate CSI. This paper reviews emerging wireless information and power transfer (WIPT) technique with an emphasis on its performance enhancement employing multi-antenna techniques. Compared to traditional wireless information transmission, WIPT faces numerous challenges. First, it is more susceptible to channel fading and path loss, resulting in a much shorter power transfer distance. Second, it gives rise to the issue on how to balance spectral efficiency for information transmission and energy efficiency for power transfer in order to obtain an optimal tradeoff. Third, there exists a security issue for information transmission in order to improve power transfer efficiency. In this context, multi-antenna techniques, e.g., energy beamforming, are introduced to solve these problems by exploiting spatial degree of freedom. This article provides a tutorial on various aspects of multi-antenna based WIPT techniques, with a focus on tackling the challenges by parameter optimization and protocol design. In particular, we investigate the WIPT tradeoffs based on two typical multi-antenna techniques, namely limited feedback multi-antenna technique for short-distance transfer and large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (LS-MIMO, also known as massive MIMO) technique for long-distance transfer. In this work, we consider a multi-antenna cognitive ad hoc network (CAHNet) with heterogeneous delay requirements. To fulfill the interference and delay constraints simultaneously, we propose to perform adaptive zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) at cognitive transmitters according to interference channel state information (CSI). To assist the CAHNet to obtain the interference CSI, we use a win-win inter-network cooperation strategy, namely quantized interference CSI feedback from the primary network to CAHNet through a feedback link, under the condition that the CAHNet pays a proper price for it. Considering the scarcity of feedback and power resources, we focus on the minimization of the overall resource cost subject to both interference and delay constraints. To solve the problem, we derive a joint feedback and power control algorithm amongst multiple links of CAHNet. We consider the communication scenario where multiple cognitive users wish to communicate to the same receiver, in the presence of primary transmission.
