The study of cosmic rays in the energy range from 1 to 1000 PeV is crucial for understanding their origins and propagation paths. As part of this research, a new SPHERE-3 installation is being developed, featuring enhanced light sensitivity and optical resolution, based on the experience gained with the balloon-borne SPHERE-2 installation. A new Cherenkov telescope of the SPHERE type is under development. Its main goal is to promote the solution of the problem of the primary cosmic ray mass composition at ultra high energies (1--100 PeV) using a newly developed technique of the primary mass assignment to EAS event on event-by-event basis. A new SPHERE-3 telescope is being developed for cosmic rays spectrum and mass composition studies in the 5--1000 PeV energy range. Registration of extensive air showers using reflected Cherenkov light method applied in the SPHERE detector series requires a good trigger system for accurate separation of events from the background produced by starlight and airglow photons reflected from the snow. Here we present the results of convolutional networks application for the classification of images obtained from Monte Carlo simulation of the detector. Detector response simulations include photons tracing through the optical system, silicon photomultiplier operation and electronics response and digitization process. The SPHERE project studies primary cosmic rays by detection of the Cherenkov light of extensive air showers reflected from the snowy surface of the earth. Measurements with the aerial-based detector SPHERE-2 were performed in 2011-2013. The detector was lifted by the balloon at altitudes up to 900 m above snowed surface of Lake Baikal, Russia. The results of the experiment are summarized now in a series of papers that opens with this article. An overview of the SPHERE-2 detector telemetry monitoring systems is presented along with the analysis of the measurements conditions including atmosphere profile. A wide-angle Cerenkov array TAIGA-HiSCORE (FOV $\sim$0.6 sr), was originally created as a part of TAIGA installation for high-energy gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics. Array now consist on nearly 100 optical stations on the area of 1 km$^2$. Due to high accuracy and stability ($\sim$1 ns) of time synchronization of the optical stations the accuracy of EAS arrival direction reconstruction is reached 0.1$^\mathrm{o}$. It was proven that the array can also be used to search for nanosecond events of the optical range. The report discusses the method of searching for optical transients using the HiSCORE array and demonstrates its performance on a real example of detecting signals from an artificial Earth satellite. The search for this short flares in the HiSCORE data of the winter season 2018--2019 is carried out. One candidate for double repeater has been detected, but the estimated probability of random simulation of such a transient by background EAS events is not less than 10%, which does not allow us to say that the detected candidate corresponds to a real astrophysical transient. The SPHERE-2 balloon-borne detector designed for extensive air shower (EAS) observations using EAS optical Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation (``Cherenkov light''), reflected from the snow-covered surface of Lake Baikal is described. We briefly discuss the concept behind the reflected Cherenkov light method, characterize the conditions at the experimental site and overview the construction of the tethered balloon used to lift the SPHERE-2 telescope above the surface. This paper is mainly dedicated to a detailed technical description of the detector, including its optical system, sensitive elements, electronics, and data acquisition system (DAQ). A compact device lifted over the ground surface might be used to observe optical radiation of extensive air showers (EAS). Here we consider spatial and temporal characteristics of Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation ("Cherenkov light") reflected from the snow surface of Lake Baikal, as registered by the SPHERE-2 detector. We perform detailed full direct Monte Carlo simulations of EAS development and present a dedicated highly modular code intended for detector response simulations. Detector response properties are illustrated by example of several model EAS events. The instrumental acceptance of the SPHERE-2 detector was calculated for a range of observation conditions. We introduce the concept of "composite model quantities", calculated for detector responses averaged over photoelectron count fluctuations, but retaining EAS development fluctuations. The distortions of EAS Cherenkov light lateral distribution function (LDF) introduced by the SPHERE-2 telescope are understood by comparing composite model LDF with the corresponding function as would be recorded by an ideal detector situated at the ground surface. We show that the uncertainty of snow optical properties does not change our conclusions, and, moreover, that the expected performance of the SPHERE experiment in the task of cosmic ray mass composition study in the energy region $\sim$10 PeV is comparable with other contemporary experiments. Local muon density spectra (LMDS) at various zenith angles have been reconstructed from the data of two detectors of the Experimental complex NEVOD. The inclined muon bundles at the ground level were detected with the coordinate detector DECOR, and for the near-vertical direction with the calibration telescope system (CTS) of the Cherenkov water detector. In comparison with the earlier DECOR results, the experimental statistics has been increased by 2-3 times for different ranges of zenith angle and muon bundle multiplicity and is now based on about 40,000 h of the setup operation. The live time of measurements with CTS is about 12,000 h. It is found with both setups that the slope of LMDS is increasing above the primary energy of about 1017 eV. The spatial distribution of Cherenkov radiation from cascade showers generated by muons in water has been measured with Cherenkov water calorimeter (CWC) NEVOD. This result allowed to improve the techniques of treating cascade showers with unknown axes by means of CWC response analysis. The techniques of selecting the events with high energy cascade showers and reconstructing their parameters are discussed. Results of investigations of the near-horizontal muons in the range of zenith angles of 85-95 degrees are presented. In this range, so-called "albedo" muons (atmospheric muons scattered in the ground into the upper hemisphere) are detected. Albedo muons are one of the main sources of the background in neutrino experiments. Experimental data of two series of measurements conducted at the experimental complex NEVOD-DECOR with the duration of about 30 thousand hours "live" time are analyzed. Change of the energy characteristics of muon bundles with an increase of the primary cosmic ray particles energy can be a key to solving the problem of muon excess in the extensive air showers (EAS) observed in a number of experiments. In this work the data on the energy deposit of multi-muon events in a wide range of zenith angles (and as a consequence in a wide range of primary particles energies) obtained with NEVOD-DECOR setup over a long time period are presented. We present an event-by-event study of cosmic ray (CR) composition with the reflected Cherenkov light method. We give an overview of the SPHERE experiment based on detection of reflected Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation (Cherenkov light) from extensive air showers in the energy region E>10^{15} eV. Here is presented the current state of the SPHERE-2 balloon-borne experiment. The detector is elevated up to 1 km above the snow surface and registers the reflected Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation from extensive air showers. This method has good sensitivity to the mass-composition of the primary cosmic rays due to its high resolution near the shower axis. The detector consists of a 1500 mm spherical mirror with a 109 PMT cluster in its focus. The electronics record a signal pulse profile in each PMT. First preliminary results of the balloon-borne experiment SPHERE-2 on the all-nuclei primary cosmic rays (PCR) spectrum and primary composition are presented. The primary spectrum in the energy range $10^{16}$--$5\cdot10^{17}$ eV was reconstructed using characteristics of Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation of extensive air showers (EAS), reflected from a snow surface. Several sources of systematic uncertainties of the spectrum were analysed. A method for separation of the primary nuclei' groups based on the lateral distribution function' (LDF) steepness parameter is presented. A new approach to investigations of ultra-high energy cosmic rays based on the ground-level measurements of the spectra of local density of EAS muons at various zenith angles is considered. Basic features of the local muon density phenomenology are illustrated using a simple semi-analytical model. It is shown that muon density spectra are sensitive to the spectrum slope, primary composition, and to the features of hadronic interaction. New experimental data on muon bundles at zenith angles from 30 degrees to horizon obtained with the coordinate detector DECOR are compared with CORSIKA-based simulations. It is found that measurements of muon density spectra in inclined EAS give possibility to study characteristics of primary cosmic ray flux in a very wide energy range from 10^15 to 10^19 eV., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. High-statistics data on near-horizontal muons collected with Russian-Italian coordinate detector DECOR are analyzed. Precise measurements of muon angular distributions in zenith angle interval from 60 to 90 degrees have been performed. In total, more than 20 million muons are selected. Dependences of the absolute integral muon intensity on zenith angle for several threshold energies ranging from 1.7 GeV to 7.2 GeV are derived. Results for this region of zenith angles and threshold energies have been obtained for the first time. We present results of an improved analysis of the experimental data of the EAS Cherenkov array Tunka-25. A new function to fit the Cherenkov light lateral distribution LDF at core distances from 0 to 350 m has been developed on the base of CORSIKA simulations and applied to the analysis of Tunka data. Two methods to estimate the EAS maximum position have been used. The one is based on the pulse FWHM, the other on the light LDF. We present the primary energy spectrum in the energy range 10^15 - 10^17 eV.
