Using the multi-point Pad\'e approach, we locate Lee-Yang edge singularities of the QCD pressure in the complex baryon chemical potential plane. These singularities are extracted from singularities in the net baryon-number density calculated in $N_f=2+1$ lattice QCD at physical quark mass and purely imaginary chemical potential. Taking an appropriate scaling ansatz in the vicinity of the conjectured QCD critical endpoint, we extrapolate the singularities on $N_\tau=6$ lattices to pure real baryon chemical potential to estimate the position of the critical endpoint (CEP). We find $T^{\rm CEP}=105^{+8}_{-18}$~ MeV and $\mu_B^{\rm CEP} = 422^{+80}_{-35}$~ MeV, which compares well with recent estimates in the literature. We discuss the scaling of the Yang-Lee singularity (YLs) and show how the universal scaling can be used to locate phase transitions in QCD. We describe two complementary methods to extract the location of the Yang-Lee singularity from lattice QCD data of the baryon-number density and higher order cumulants of the baryon number, obtained at imaginary chemical potential. The first method (multi-point Pad\'e resummation) is used to determine the Roberge-Weiss phase transition temperature. Our continuum extrapolated result is $T_{RW}=211.1\pm3.1$ MeV. The second method is based on the asymptotic behaviour of the Fourier coefficients of the baryon-number density. Future gas turbine engines will operate at higher gas temperatures and consequentially hot-section components such as blades, vanes and combustors, will be subject to higher thermal radiation fluxes than today. Current thermal barrier coating materials are translucent over the spectral region of the heat flux so future coatings will also have to provide a barrier to thermal radiation. The effects of optical absorption and scattering properties of coating materials on the temperatures and heat fluxes through coatings are explored using a two-flux heat transfer model, and promising combinations are identified that reduce the coating-alloy interface temperatures. Lower interface temperatures occur for thickness normalized absorptions of $\overline{\kappa} L$ $>$1. The effect of both a narrow and a broad band spectrally selective absorbing Gd${_2}$Zr${_2}$O$_{7}$ based coating materials are then studied. These show that large values of the product of the normalized absorption length and the spectral width of the absorption are required to significantly decrease the radiative heat transport through a coating. The results emphasize the importance of enhancing the optical absorption of the next generation barrier materials as a strategy to increase gas turbine engine efficiency by decreasing compressor bleed air cooling requirements.

Python is a particularly appealing language to carry out data analysis, owing in part to its user-friendly character as well as its access to well maintained and powerful libraries like NumPy and SciPy. Still, for the purpose of analyzing data in a lattice QCD context, some desirable functionality is missing from these libraries. Moreover, scripting languages tend to be slower than compiled ones. To help address these points we present the AnalysisToolbox, a collection of Python modules to facilitate lattice QCD data analysis. Some highlighted features include general-purpose jackknife and bootstrap routines; modules for reading in and storing gauge configurations; a module to carry out hadron resonance gas model calculations; and convenience wrappers for SciPy integration, curve fitting, and splines. The rise of exascale supercomputers has fueled competition among GPU vendors, driving lattice QCD developers to write code that supports multiple APIs. Moreover, new developments in algorithms and physics research require frequent updates to existing software. These challenges have to be balanced against constantly changing personnel. At the same time, there is a wide range of applications for HISQ fermions in QCD studies. This situation encourages the development of software featuring a HISQ action that is flexible, high-performing, open source, easy to use, and easy to adapt. In this technical paper, we explain the design strategy, provide implementation details, list available algorithms and modules, and show key performance indicators for SIMULATeQCD, a simple multi-GPU lattice code for large-scale QCD calculations, mainly developed and used by the HotQCD collaboration. We report updated results on the determination of Lee-Yang edge (LYE) singularities in $N_f = 2+1$ QCD using highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) with physical masses on $N_\tau = 4, 6, 8$ lattices. The singularity structure of QCD in the complex $\mu_B$ plane is probed using conserved charges calculated at imaginary $\mu_B$. The location of the singularities is determined by studying the (uncancelled) poles of multi-point Pad\'e approximants. We show that close to the Roberge-Weiss (RW) transition, the location of the LYE singularities scales according to the $3$-$d$ $Z(2)$ universality class. By combining the new $N_\tau = 6$ data with the $N_\tau = 4$ data from our previous analysis we extract a rough estimate for the RW temperature in the continuum limit. A new approach is presented to explore the singularity structure of lattice QCD in the complex chemical potential plane. Our method can be seen as a combination of the Taylor expansion and analytic continuation approaches. Its novelty lies in using rational (Pad\'e) approximants for studying Lee-Yang edge singularities. We present a calculation of the cumulants of the net-baryon number as a function of a purely imaginary baryon number chemical potential, obtained with highly improved staggered quarks at temporal lattice extent of $N_\tau=4,6$. We construct various rational function approximations of the lattice data and determine their poles (and roots) in the complex plane. We compare the position of the closest pole to the theoretically expected position of the Lee-Yang edge singularity. We introduce a number of techniques in quantitative convergent-beam electron diffraction under development by our group and discuss the basis for measuring interatomic electrostatic potentials (and therefore also electron densities), localised at sub-nanometre scales, with sufficient accuracy and precision to map chemical bonds in and around nanostructures in nanostructured materials. This has never been possible as experimental measurements of bonding have always been restricted to homogeneous single-phased crystals., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

We present $\texttt{SIMULATeQCD}$, HotQCD's software for performing lattice QCD calculations on GPUs. Started in late 2017 and intended as a full replacement of the previous single GPU lattice QCD code used by the HotQCD collaboration, our software has been developed into an extensive framework for lattice QCD calculations distributed on multiple GPUs over many compute nodes. The code is built on C++, CUDA, and MPI and leverages modern C++ language features to provide high-level data structures, objects, and algorithms that allow users to express lattice QCD calculations in an intuitive way without sacrificing performance. Implemented algorithms range from gradient flow, correlator measurements, and mixed precision conjugate gradient solvers all the way to full HISQ gauge field configuration generation using RHMC. After successful deployment in large-scale computing projects, we want to share the result of our efforts with the lattice QCD community by making it publicly available. The Polyakov loop expectation value $\langle P\rangle$ is an order parameter of the deconfinement transition in the heavy quark mass regime, whereas its sensitivity to the deconfinement of light, dynamical quarks is not apparent. From the perspective of an effective Lagrangian in the vicinity of the chiral transition, the Polyakov loop, $P$, is an energy-like observable, and $\langle P\rangle$ should hence scale like the energy density. Using $N_f=2+1$ HISQ configurations at finite lattice spacing, we show that near the chiral transition temperature, the scaling behavior of $\langle P\rangle$ and the heavy quark free energy $F_q$ is consistent with energy-like observables in the 3-$d$, O($N$) universality class. Data Science advances in sports commonly involve "big data", i.e., large sport-related data sets. However, such big data sets are not always available, necessitating specialized models that apply to relatively few observations. One important area of sport-science research that features small data sets is the study of recovery from exercise. In this area, models are typically fitted to data collected from exhaustive exercise test protocols, which athletes can perform only a few times. Recent findings highlight that established recovery such as the so-called work-balance models are too simple to adequately fit observed trends in the data. Therefore, we investigated a hydraulic model that requires the same few data points as work-balance models to be applied, but promises to predict recovery dynamics more accurately. To compare the hydraulic model to established work-balance models, we retrospectively applied them to data compiled from published studies. In total, one hydraulic model and three work-balance models were compared on data extracted from five studies. The hydraulic model outperformed established work-balance models on all defined metrics, even those that penalize models featuring higher numbers of parameters. In the heavy, static quark mass regime of QCD, the Polyakov loop is well known to be an order parameter of the deconfinement phase transition; however, the sensitivity of the Polyakov loop to the deconfinement of light, dynamical quarks is less clear. While the Polyakov loop is an order parameter of the deconfinement transition in the heavy quark mass regime of QCD, its sensitivity to the deconfinement of light, dynamical quarks in QCD is not apparent. On the other hand, the quark mass dependence of the Polyakov loop is sensitive to the appearance of a chiral phase transition. Using lattice QCD calculations in the staggered fermion discretization scheme at finite values of the lattice spacing, $aT = 1/8$, we show here, for the first time, that the Polyakov loop expectation value, and the heavy quark free energy extracted from it, behave like energy-like observables in the vicinity of the chiral phase transition temperature $T_c$. Consistent with scaling behavior of energy-like observables in the 3-$d$, O(2) universality class, the quark mass derivatives diverge in the chiral limit at $T_c$ while the temperature derivatives stay finite. The latter will develop a characteristic spike at $T_c$. This, however, may be resolved only in calculations with quark masses being two orders of magnitude smaller than those currently accessible in lattice QCD calculations., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We demonstrate, for the first time, that a quantum flux parametron (QFP) is capable of acting as both isolator and amplifier in the readout circuit of a capacitively shunted flux qubit (CSFQ). By treating the QFP like a tunable coupler and biasing it such that the coupling is off, we show that $T_1$ of the CSFQ is not impacted by Purcell loss from its low-Q readout resonator ($Q_e = 760$) despite being detuned by only $40$ MHz. When annealed, the QFP amplifies the qubit's persistent current signal such that it generates a flux qubit-state-dependent frequency shift of $85$ MHz in the readout resonator, which is over $9$ times its linewidth. The device is shown to read out a flux qubit in the persistent current basis with fidelities surpassing $98.6\%$ with only $80$ ns integration, and reaches fidelities of $99.6\%$ when integrated for $1$ $\mu$s. In quenched QCD the Polyakov loop is an order parameter of the deconfinement transition, but with decreasing quark mass, the peak in the Polyakov loop susceptibility becomes less pronounced, and it loses its interpretation as an indicator for deconfinement. For this $N_f=2+1$ HISQ study, we fix the strange quark mass $m_s$ at its physical value and investigate the dependence of the Polyakov loop on the light quark mass $m_l$ in the range $m_s/m_l=27-160$, following $m_l$ toward the chiral limit. In particular we will look how the inflection point and susceptibility behave as we decrease $m_l$, to see whether one finds any indication of a crossover, and therefore whether the Polyakov loop is sensitive to the chiral phase transition. Preliminary results show no signal of a crossover from the real part of the Polyakov loop in the vicinity of the chiral crossover. Closely related is an investigation of Polyakov loop correlations and the Debye mass in this limit. In this dissertation, we investigate the approach of pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory to its continuum limit using the deconfinement temperature, six gradient scales, and six cooling scales. We find that cooling scales exhibit similarly good scaling behavior as gradient scales, while being computationally more efficient. In addition, we estimate systematic error in continuum limit extrapolations of scale ratios by comparing standard scaling to asymptotic scaling. Finally we study topological observables in pure SU(2) using cooling to smooth the gauge fields, and investigate the sensitivity of cooling scales to topological charge. We find that large numbers of cooling sweeps lead to metastable charge sectors, without destroying physical instantons, provided the lattice spacing is fine enough and the volume is large enough. Continuum limit estimates of the topological susceptibility are obtained, of which we favor $\chi^{1/4}/T_c = 0.643(12)$. We present 2.5-D global, ideal MHD simulations of magnetically and rotationally driven protostellar jets from Keplerian accretion discs, wherein only the initial magnetic field strength at the inner radius of the disc, $B_{\rm i}$, is varied. Using the AMR-MHD code AZEUS, we self-consistently follow the jet evolution into the observational regime ($>10^3\,\mathrm{AU}$) with a spatial dynamic range of $\sim6.5\times10^5$. The simulations reveal a three-component outflow: 1) A hot, dense, super-fast and highly magnetised 'jet core'; 2) a cold, rarefied, trans-fast and highly magnetised 'sheath' surrounding the jet core and extending to a tangential discontinuity; and 3) a warm, dense, trans-slow and weakly magnetised shocked ambient medium entrained by the advancing bow shock. The simulations reveal power-law relationships between $B_{\rm i}$ and the jet advance speed, $v_{\rm jet}$, the average jet rotation speed, $\langle v_\varphi\rangle$, as well as fluxes of mass, momentum, and kinetic energy. Quantities that do not depend on $B_{\rm i}$ include the plasma-$\beta$ of the transported material which, in all cases, seems to asymptote to order unity. Jets are launched by a combination of the 'magnetic tower' and 'bead-on-a-wire' mechanisms, with the former accounting for most of the jet acceleration---even for strong fields---and continuing well beyond the fast magnetosonic point. At no time does the leading bow shock leave the domain and, as such, these simulations generate large-scale jets that reproduce many of the observed properties of protostellar jets including their characteristic speeds and transported fluxes., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures. Exceptionally large strains can be produced in soft elastomers by the application of an electric field and the strains can be exploited for a variety of novel actuators, such as tunable lenses and tactile actuators. However, shape morphing with dielectric elastomers has not been possible since no generalizable method for changing their Gaussian curvature has been devised. It is shown that this fundamental limitation can be lifted by introducing internal, spatially varying electric fields through a layer-by-layer fabrication method incorporating shaped, carbon-nanotubes-based electrodes between thin elastomer sheets. To illustrate the potential of the method, voltage-tunable negative and positive Gaussian curvatures shapes are produced. Furthermore, by applying voltages to different sets of internal electrodes, the shapes can be re-configured. All the shape changes are reversible when the voltage is removed.

The phases in the ZnO half of the ZnO-In2O3 binary system are natural superlattices consisting of periodic stacking of single InO2 sheets separated by indium doped ZnO blocks with a spacing that depends on the composition according to the relationship In2O3(ZnO)k. Characterization by combined, atomic resolution, aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) analysis, indicates that the atomic structure of each InO2 layer consists of a single continuous sheet of octahedrally-coordinated InO2. The sheets also are crystallographic inversion boundaries. Analysis of the electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and Seebeck coefficient data at 800 oC indicates that the InO2 sheets not only decrease thermal conductivity by phonon scattering but also create potential barriers to electron transport. The origin of the potential barriers, the role of piezoelectric effects and their dependence on superlattice spacing is discussed qualitatively. It is also argued that the crystallographically-aligned InO2 sheets within individual grains are also transport barriers in randomly oriented polycrystalline materials., Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures

Optical components, such as lenses, have traditionally been made in the bulk form by shaping glass or other transparent materials. Recent advances in metasurfaces provide a new basis for recasting optical components into thin, planar elements, having similar or better performance using arrays of subwavelength-spaced optical phase-shifters. The technology required to mass produce them dates back to the mid-1990s, when the feature sizes of semiconductor manufacturing became considerably denser than the wavelength of light, advancing in stride with Moore's law. This provides the possibility of unifying two industries: semiconductor manufacturing and lens-making, whereby the same technology used to make computer chips is used to make optical components, such as lenses, based on metasurfaces. Using a scalable metasurface layout compression algorithm that exponentially reduces design file sizes (by 3 orders of magnitude for a centimeter diameter lens) and stepper photolithography, we show the design and fabrication of metasurface lenses (metalenses) with extremely large areas, up to centimeters in diameter and beyond. Using a single two-centimeter diameter near-infrared metalens less than a micron thick fabricated in this way, we experimentally implement the ideal thin lens equation, while demonstrating high-quality imaging and diffraction-limited focusing.

Using Monte Carlo simulations with overrelaxation, we have equilibrated lattices up to $\beta=2.928$, size $60^4$, for pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory with the Wilson action. We calculate topological charges with the standard cooling method and find that they become more reliable with increasing $\beta$ values and lattice sizes. Continuum limit estimates of the topological susceptibility $\chi$ are obtained of which we favor $\chi^{1/4}/T_c=0.643\,(12)$, where $T_c$ is the SU(2) deconfinement temperature.
