1. A Babcock-Leighton dynamo model of the Sun incorporating toroidal flux loss and the helioseismically-inferred meridional flow

Abstract

We investigate whether the Babcock-Leighton flux-transport dynamo model remains in agreement with observations if the meridional flow profile is taken from helioseismic inversions. Additionally, we investigate the effect of the loss of toroidal flux through the solar surface. We employ the 2D flux-transport BL dynamo framework. We use the helioseismically-inferred meridional flow profile, and include toroidal flux loss in a way that is consistent with the amount of poloidal flux generated by Joy's law. Our model does not impose a preference for emergences at low latitudes, but we do require that the model produces such a preference. We can find solutions in general agreement with observations, including the equatorward drift of the butterfly wings and the cycle's 11 year period. The most important free parameters in the model are the depth to which the radial turbulent pumping extends and the turbulent diffusivity in the lower half of the convection zone. We find that the pumping needs to extend to depths of about $0.80R_{\odot}$ and the bulk turbulent diffusivity needs to be around 10 km$^2$/s or less. We find that the emergences are restricted to low latitudes without the need to impose such a preference. The flux-transport BL model, incorporating the helioseismically inferred meridional flow and toroidal field loss term, is compatible with the properties of the observed butterfly diagram and with the observed toroidal loss rate. Reasonably tight constraints are placed on the remaining free parameters. The pumping needs to be to just below the depth corresponding to the location where the meridional flow changes direction. Our linear model does not however reproduce the observed "rush to the poles" of the diffuse surface radial field resulting from the decay of sunspots -- reproducing this might require the imposition of a preference for flux to emerge near the equator., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted by A&A

Abstract

Ground state eigenvectors of the reduced Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer Hamiltonian are employed as a wavefunction ansatz to model strong electron correlation in quantum chemistry. This wavefunction is a product of weakly-interacting pairs of electrons. While other geminal wavefunctions may only be employed in a projected Schr\"{o}dinger equation, the present approach may be solved variationally with polynomial cost. The resulting wavefunctions are used to compute expectation values of Coulomb Hamiltionans and we present results for atoms and dissociation curves which are in agreement with doubly-occupied configuration interaction (DOCI) data. The present approach will serve as the starting point for a many-body theory of pairs, much as Hartree-Fock is the starting point for weakly-correlated electrons.

6. Greenspace and park use associated with less emotional distress among college students in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected many people's psychological health. Impacts may be particularly severe among socially vulnerable populations such as college students, a group predisposed to mental health problems. Outdoor recreation and visits to greenspaces such as parks offer promising pathways for addressing the mental health challenges associated with COVID-19. During the early stages of the pandemic (March–May 2020), we surveyed 1280 college students at four large public universities across the United States (U.S.) to assess how, and why, outdoor recreation and park use changed since the emergence of COVID-19. We also measured students' self-reported levels of emotional distress (a proxy for psychological health) and assessed potential demographic and contextual correlates of distress, including county-level per capita park area and greenness, using generalized linear models. We found that 67% of students reported limiting outdoor activities and 54% reported reducing park use during the pandemic. Students who reduced their use of outdoor spaces cited structural reasons (e.g., lockdowns), concerns about viral transmission, and negative emotions that obstructed active lifestyles. Students who maintained pre-pandemic park use levels expressed a desire to be outdoors in nature, often with the explicit goal of improving mental and physical health. Emotional distress among students was widespread. Models showed higher levels of emotional distress were associated with reducing park use during the pandemic and residing in counties with a smaller area of parks per capita. This study of U.S. college students supports the value of park-based recreation as a health promotion strategy for diverse populations of young adults during a time of crisis.

Abstract

High-performance electrocatalysts are critical to support emerging electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies. Graphite-derived materials, including fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, have been recognized as promising electrocatalysts and electrocatalyst supports for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR). Effective modification/functionalization of graphite-derived materials can promote higher electrocatalytic activity, stability, and durability. In this review, the mechanisms and evaluation parameters for the above-outlined electrochemical reactions are introduced first. Then, we emphasize the preparation methods for graphite-derived materials and modification strategies. We further highlight the importance of the structural changes of modified graphite-derived materials on electrocatalytic activity and stability. Finally, future directions and perspectives towards new and better graphite-derived materials are presented.

Abstract

Phage-resistant and -susceptible bacteria from nodules of alfalfa and sweet clover, grown at a site without a known history of cultivation, were identified as diverse genotypes of Ensifer, Rhizobium and Phyllobacterium species based on sequence analysis of ribosomal (16S and 23S rRNA) and protein-encoding (atpD and recA) genes, Southern hybridization/RFLP and a range of phenotypic characteristics. Among phage-resistant bacteria, one genotype of Rhizobium sp. predominated on alfalfa (frequency ~68%) but was recovered infrequently (~1%) from sweet clover. A second genotype was isolated infrequently only from alfalfa. These genotypes fixed nitrogen poorly in association with sweet clover and Phaseolus vulgaris, but were moderately effective with alfalfa. They produced a near-neutral reaction on mineral salts agar containing mannitol, which is atypical of the genus Rhizobium. A single isolate of Ensifersp. and two of Phyllobacterium sp. were recovered only from sweet clover. All were highly resistant to multiple antibiotics. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that Ensifer sp. strain T173 is closely related to, but separate from, the non-symbiotic species 'Sinorhizobium morelense'. Strain T173 is unique in that it possesses a 175 kb symbiotic plasmid and elicits ineffective nodules on alfalfa, sweet clover, Medicago lupulina and Macroptilium atropurpureum. The two Phyllobacterium spp. were non-symbiotic and probably represent bacterial opportunists. Three genotypes of E. meliloti that were symbiotically effective with alfalfa and sweet clover were encountered infrequently. Among phage-susceptible isolates, two genotypes of E. medicae were encountered infrequently and were highly effective with alfalfa, sweet clover and Medicago polymorpha. Abstract

BackgroundUniversity students are increasingly recognized as a vulnerable population, suffering from higher levels of anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and disordered eating compared to the general population. Therefore, when the nature of their educational experience radically changes—such as sheltering in place during the COVID-19 pandemic—the burden on the mental health of this vulnerable population is amplified. The objectives of this study are to 1) identify the array of psychological impacts COVID-19 has on students, 2) develop profiles to characterize students' anticipated levels of psychological impact during the pandemic, and 3) evaluate potential sociodemographic, lifestyle-related, and awareness of people infected with COVID-19 risk factors that could make students more likely to experience these impacts.MethodsCross-sectional data were collected through web-based questionnaires from seven U.S. universities. Representative and convenience sampling was used to invite students to complete the questionnaires in mid-March to early-May 2020, when most coronavirus-related sheltering in place orders were in effect. We received 2,534 completed responses, of which 61% were from women, 79% from non-Hispanic Whites, and 20% from graduate students.ResultsExploratory factor analysis on close-ended responses resulted in two latent constructs, which we used to identify profiles of students with latent profile analysis, including high (45% of sample), moderate (40%), and low (14%) levels of psychological impact. Bivariate associations showed students who were women, were non-Hispanic Asian, in fair/poor health, of below-average relative family income, or who knew someone infected with COVID-19 experienced higher levels of psychological impact. Students who were non-Hispanic White, above-average social class, spent at least two hours outside, or less than eight hours on electronic screens were likely to experience lower levels of psychological impact. Multivariate modeling (mixed-effects logistic regression) showed that being a woman, having fair/poor general health status, being 18 to 24 years old, spending 8 or more hours on screens daily, and knowing someone infected predicted higher levels of psychological impact when risk factors were considered simultaneously.ConclusionInadequate efforts to recognize and address college students’ mental health challenges, especially during a pandemic, could have long-term consequences on their health and education.

19. Thermal dynamics effects using pulse-shaping laser sintering of printed silver inks

Abstract

In recent years, additive manufacturing has been evolving towards flexible substrates for the fabrication of printable electronic devices and circuits. Generally polymer-based, these emerging substrates suffer from their heat sensitivity and low glass-transition temperatures. As such they require new highly-localized sintering processes to treat the electronic inks without damaging the polymer-based substrate. Laser-based sintering techniques have shown great promises to achieve high-quality sintering locally, while controlling the heat penetration to preserve the polymer substrates integrity. In this report, we explore new optimization pathways for dynamic laser-based sintering of conductive silver inks. Multiple passes of a pulsed laser are first performed while varying pulse train frequencies and pulse energies as an attempt to optimize the properties of the silver inks. Then, time-domain pulse shaping is performed to alter the properties of the conductive inks. Together, these pathways allow for the careful control of the time-domain laser energy distribution in order to achieve the best electronic performances while preserving the substrate’s integrity. Sheet resistance values as low as 0.024Ω/□ are achieved, which is comparable to conventional 1-hour oven annealing, with the processing time dramatically reduced to the milisecond range. These results are supported by finite element modeling of the laser-induced thermal dynamics.

20. The Virtual Shop: A new immersive virtual reality environment and scenario for the assessment of everyday memory

Abstract

Background: Assessing and predicting memory performance in everyday life is a common assignment for neuropsychologists. However, most traditional neuropsychological tasks are not conceived to capture everyday memory performance. New method: The Virtual Shop is a fully immersive task developed to assess memory in a more ecological way than traditional neuropsychological assessments. Two studies were undertaken to assess the feasibility of the Virtual Shop and to appraise its ecological and construct validity. In study 1, 20 younger and 19 older adults completed the Virtual Shop task to evaluate its level of difficulty and the way the participants interacted with the VR material. The construct validity was examined with the contrasted-group method, by comparing the performance of younger and older adults. In study 2, 35 individuals with subjective cognitive decline completed the Virtual Shop task. Performance was correlated with an existing questionnaire evaluating everyday memory in order to appraise its ecological validity. To add further support to its construct validity, performance was correlated with traditional episodic memory and executive tasks. Results: All participants successfully completed the Virtual Shop. The task had an appropriate level of difficulty that helped differentiate younger and older adults, supporting the feasibility and construct validity of the task. Comparison with existing method(s): The performance on the Virtual Shop was significantly and moderately correlated with the performance on the questionnaire and on the traditional memory and executive tasks. Conclusions: Results support the feasibility and both the ecological and construct validity of the Virtual Shop.

Abstract

Plant disease resistance is often conferred by genes with nucleotide binding site (NBS) and leucine-rich repeat (LRR) or serine/threonine protein kinase (S/TPK) domains. Much less is known about mechanisms of susceptibility, particularly to necrotrophic fungal pathogens. The pathogens that cause the diseases tan spot and Stagonospora nodorum blotch on wheat produce effectors (host-selective toxins) that induce susceptibility in wheat lines harboring corresponding toxin sensitivity genes. The effector ToxA is produced by both pathogens, and sensitivity to ToxA is governed by the Tsn1 gene on wheat chromosome arm 5BL. Here, we report the cloning of Tsn1, which was found to have disease resistance gene-like features, including S/TPK and NBS-LRR domains. Mutagenesis revealed that all three domains are required for ToxA sensitivity, and hence disease susceptibility. Tsn1 is unique to ToxA-sensitive genotypes, and insensitive genotypes are null. Sequencing and phylogenetic analysis indicated that Tsn1 arose in the B-genome diploid progenitor of polyploid wheat through a gene-fusion event that gave rise to its unique structure. Although Tsn1 is necessary to mediate ToxA recognition, yeast two-hybrid experiments suggested that the Tsn1 protein does not interact directly with ToxA. Tsn1 transcription is tightly regulated by the circadian clock and light, providing further evidence that Tsn1-ToxA interactions are associated with photosynthesis pathways. This work suggests that these necrotrophic pathogens may thrive by subverting the resistance mechanisms acquired by plants to combat other pathogens.

Abstract

The fungus Pyrenophora tritici- repentis (Died.) causes tan spot, an important leaf disease of wheat worldwide. Isolates of this pathogen have been collected and characterized into eight races on the basis of their ability to produce three different host-selective toxins. The karyotype of 47 isolates was determined by pulsed field gel electrophoresis. The collection originated from different parts of the world and included genotypes from all races. A single isolate was characterized for each of races 3, 4 and 6, whereas fourteen, five, nine, five and eleven isolates were karyotyped for races 1, 2, 5, 7 and 8, respectively. The survey showed that the chromosome number of P. tritici-repentis was highly variable, with some isolates having as few as eight chromosomes, but others having 11 or more. Similarly, the genome size ranged from 25.5 to 48.0 Mb, and individual chromosome sizes ranged from 1.3 to more than 5.7 Mb. Considerable variation was observed in karyotype patterns among the P. tritici-repentis isolates tested. A total of 29 different karyotypes was identified among the 47 isolates. These chromosome level variations were as variable for isolates within a race as for isolates across races. Southern blot analysis of the 47 isolates with ToxA and ToxB probes revealed that the toxin genes were always located on different chromosomes. Furthermore, with six chromosome-specific single-copy probes, the ToxA-carrying chromosome was shown to be homologous among the Ptr ToxA-producing isolates, with a related chromosome in the non-ToxA-producing isolates, suggesting that the chromosome on which ToxA generally resides is of an essential nature.
