A parallel survey of executives from Chinese companies and from around the world expects China to maintain its advantage on low-cost production. Chinese companies expect strong growth in revenues from outside companies, while executives from outside China expect rising competition from Chinese companies in the next three years. Other findings of the survey are presented.

Companies that succeeded in the 'new economy' are the ones that concentrated on global markets, focus on their business, and research and innovation.

Fulfillment of competitiveness in the global scene in the 21st century is viewed to be dependent on three factors. Among these are privatization and the reemergence and growth of entrepreneurship, which represent significant changes in the global economies. When it comes to human development, companies have come to recognize the importance of improving the intellect and knowledge of their employees. Lastly, many companies have realized that true economic development also means environmental protection.

Global competition is an emerging trend and it will be helpful for organizations to determine the patterns of emerging global competition that they may be better able to adapt. There is very little research effort on the influence of the environment on patterns of global competition but the interaction between the environment and business organization will probably explain the variation in global competition pattern. There is a need to develop an emergent adaptation strategy to cope with the increasing global competition.

The European Commission's Council has agreed to extend the scope of its merger control regulation covering joint ventures and mergers but has rejected the Commission's proposal to change the rules regarding the Commission's vetting rights. An overview of competition policy within the EU is presented.

There are a number of business activities that require a deep understanding of multinational business laws. These include the creation of joint ventures, signing contracts with international distributors and agents, establishing branches in host countries and opening subsidiaries. Companies can effectively improve their competitive advantage on a global basis by understanding the legal framework of these processes.

Susan DeSanti, FTC Director of Policy Planning, says the agency is planning to evaluate the ramifications of mergers and consolidation in the emerging global marketplace, particularly in terms of high tech industries. The FTC wants to evaluate what economic efficiencies can result from mergers or duopolies and adjust its antitrust enforcement policies as might be necessary. However, critics charge the FTC's stance is a political move to bring enforcement efforts in line with the wishes of GOP Congressional leaders.
