Search

Hydrogen and hydrides materials have long been considered promising materials for high-temperature superconductivity. But the extreme pressures required for the metallization of hydrogen-based superconductors limit their applications. Here, we have designed a series of high-temperature perovskite hydrides that can be stable within 10 GPa. Our research covered 182 ternary systems and ultimately determined that 9 compounds were stable within 20 GPa, of which 5 exhibited superconducting transition temperatures exceeding 120 K within 10 GPa. Excitingly, KGaH3 and CsInH3 are thermodynamically stable at 50 GPa. Among these perovskite hydrides, alkali metals are responsible for providing a fixed amount of charge and maintaining structural stability, while the cubic framework formed by IIIA group elements and hydrogen is crucial for high-temperature superconductivity. This work will inspire further experimental exploration and take an important step in the exploration of low-pressure stable high-temperature superconductors.

Trilayer Ruddlesden-Popper phase La4Ni3O10 has been observed with Tc over 30 K at high pressure in recent experiment, which further expanded the nickelate superconductors family. In this study, we explored the effects of electronic correlations in La4Ni3O10 using density function theory plus dynamical mean-field theory at ambient pressure and high pressure. Our derived spectral functions and Fermi surface of ambient phase are nicely consistent with the experimental results of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, which emphasized the importance of electronic correlations in La4Ni3O10. We also found the electronic correlations in pressured La4Ni3O10 are both orbital-dependent and layer-dependent due to the presence of Hund's rule coupling. There is a competition between Hund's rule coupling and crystal-field splitting, where the Ni-O layers with weaker crystal field splitting energy would have stronger electronic correlations.

Metallic hydrogen, existing in remarkably extreme environments, was predicted to exhibit long-sought room-temperature superconductivity. Although the superconductivity of metallic hydrogen has not been confirmed experimentally, superconductivity of hydrogen in hydrides was recently discovered with remarkably high critical temperature as theoretically predicted. In recent years, theoretical simulations have become a new paradigm for material science, especially exploration of material at extreme pressure. As the typical high-pressure material, metallic hydrogen has been providing a fertile playground for advanced simulations for long time. Simulations not only provide the substitute of experiments for hydrogen at high-pressure, but also encouraged the discovery of almost all the experimentally discovered superconducting hydrides with the record high superconducting transition temperature. This work reviews recent progress in hydrogen and hydrides under extreme pressure, focusing on phase diagram, structures and the long-sought goal of high-temperature superconductivity. We explicitly consider both phonon energy shifts and broadening arising from both cubic and quartic anharmonicities, as well as diagonal/non-diagonal terms of heat flux operators in thermal conductivity. Our findings show that the strong anharmonicity of CsCu$_3$S$_2$ primarily arises from the presence of $p$-$d$ anti-bonding hybridization between Cu and S atoms, coupled with the random oscillations of Cs atoms. Notably, the competition between phonon hardening described by the loop diagram and softening induced by the bubble diagram significantly influences particle-like propagation, predominantly reflected in group velocity and energy-conservation rule. Additionally, the electrical transport properties are determined by employing the precise momentum relaxation-time approximation (MRTA). At high temperatures, the thermoelectric performance of $p$-type CsCu$_3$S$_2$ reaches its optimum theoretical value of 0.94 along the in-plane direction based on advanced phonon renormalization theory. In striking contrast, the harmonic approximation theory significantly overestimates the thermoelectric efficiency at the same temperatures, rendering it an impractical expectation. Conversely, the first-order renormalization approach leads to a serious underestimation of the thermoelectric properties due to the over-correction of phonon energy. Our study not only reveals the pivotal role of anharmonic lattice dynamics in accurately assessing thermoelectric properties but also underscores the potential thermoelectric applications for novel copper-based chalcogenides.

The recent transport measurement of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ uncover a "right-triangle" shape of the superconducting dome in the pressure-temperature (P-T) phase diagram. Motivated by this, we perform theoretical first-principles studies of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ with the pressure ranging from 0 to 100 GPa. Notably, we reveal a pressure dependence of the Ni-$d_{z^2}$ electron density at the Fermi energy ($n_z^{EF}$) that highly coincides with such shape. On this basis, we further explore the electronic structure under uniaxial stress. By tracking the stress response of $n_z^{EF}$, we propose that superconductivity can be achieved by applying only about 2 GPa of compression along the c axis. The idea is further exemplified from the perspectives of lattice distortion, band structure, Fermi surface and superconducting phase coherence. We also discuss the possible charge modulation under the stress and provide an insight to the relation between n_z^EF and the superconducting Tc in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ system. Our study provides a helpful guide to the future experiment.

We thoroughly investigate the microscopic mechanisms of the thermal transport in orthorhombic \textit{o}-CsCu$_5$S$_3$ by integrating the first-principles-based self-consistent phonon calculations (SCP) with the linearized Wigner transport equation (LWTE). Our methodology takes into account contributions to phonon energy shifts and phonon scattering rates from both three- and four-phonon processes. Additionally, it incorporates the off-diagonal terms of heat flux operators to calculate the total thermal conductivity. The predicted $\kappa_\mathrm{L}$ with an extremely weak temperature dependence following $\sim T^{-0.33}$, in good agreement with experimental values along with the parallel to the Bridgman growth direction. Such nonstandard temperature dependence of $\kappa_\mathrm{L}$ can be traced back to the dual particlelike-wavelike behavior exhibited by thermal phonons. Specifically, the coexistence of the stochastic oscillation of Cs atoms and metavalent bonding among interlayer Cu-S atoms limits the particle-like phonon propagation and enhances the wave-like tunneling of phonons. Simultaneously, the electrical transport properties are determined by employing a precise momentum relaxation-time approximation (MRTA) within the framework of the linearized Boltzmann transport equation (LBTE). By properly adjusting the carrier concentration, excellent thermoelectric performance is achieved, with a maximum thermoelectric conversion efficiency of 18.4$\%$ observed at 800 K in \textit{p}-type \textit{o}-CsCu$_5$S$_3$.} Our work not only elucidates the anomalous thermal transport behavior in the copper-based chalcogenide \textit{o}-CsCu$_5$S$_3$ but also provides insights for manipulating its thermal and electronic properties for potential thermoelectric applications.

Investigating the implications of interlayer coupling on superconductivity is essential for comprehending the intrinsic mechanisms of high temperature superconductors. Van der Waals heterojunctions have attracted extensive research due to their exotic interlayer coupling. Here, we present a natural heterojunction superconductor of 6R-TaS2 that demonstrates a double-dome of superconductivity, in addition to, the reemergence of superconducting under high pressures. Our first principles calculation shows that the first dome of superconductivity in 6R-TaS2 can be attributed to changes in interlayer coupling and charge transfer. The second superconducting dome and the reemergence of superconductivity can be ascribed to changes in the density of states resulting from Fermi surface reconstruction, in which the DOS of T-layer and S p-orbitals play a crucial role. We have reported the first observation in TMDs that non-metallic atoms playing a dominant role in the reemergence of superconducting and the influence of two Lifshitz transitions on superconducting properties.

The compressed hydrogen-rich compounds have received extensive attention as promising candidates for room temperature superconductivity, however, the high pressure required to stabilize such materials hinders their wide practical application. In order to search for potential superconducting hydrides that are stable at low pressures, we have investigated the crystal structures and properties of quaternary hydrides, XM3Be4H32 (X, M = Ca, Sr, Ba, Y, La, Ac, Th) based on the first-principles calculations. We identified nine dynamically stable compounds at moderate pressure of 20 GPa. Strikingly, their superconducting transition temperatures are much higher than that of liquid nitrogen, especially CaTh3Be4H32 (124 K at 5 GPa), ThLa3Be4H32(134 K at 10 GPa), LaAc3Be4H32 (135 K at 20 GPa) and AcLa3Be4H32 (153 K at 20 GPa) exhibit outstanding superconductivity at mild pressures. Metal atoms acting as pre-compressors donate abundant electrons to hydrogen, weakening the H-H covalent bond and thus facilitating the metallization of the hydrogen sublattice. At the same time, the appropriate combination of metal elements with different ionic radius and electronegativity can effectively tune the electronic structure near the Fermi level and improve the superconductivity. These findings fully reveal the great promise of hosting high-temperature superconductivity of quaternary hydrides at moderate pressures and will further promote related exploration., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

High pressure plays a crucial role in the field of superconductivity. Compressed hydride superconductors are leaders in the race for a material that can conduct electricity without resistance at high or even room temperature. In the present work, we have discovered new lanthanum superhydride, cubic A15-type La$_4$H$_{23}$, with lower stabilization pressure compared to the reported $\textit{fcc}$ LaH$_{10}$. Superconducting La$_4$H$_{23}$ was obtained by laser heating of LaH$_3$ with ammonia borane at about 120 GPa. Transport measurements reveal the maximum critical temperature $\textit{T}$$_{C}$(onset) = 105 K and the critical field $\textit{H}$$_{C2}$(0) = 32 T at 118 GPa, as evidenced by the sharp drop of electrical resistance and the displacement of superconducting transitions in applied magnetic fields. Moreover, we provide evidence for unconventional transport associated with a pseudogap phase in La$_4$H$_{23}$ using pulsed magnetic fields up to 68 T. A large negative magnetoresistance in the non-superconducting state below 40 K, quasi $\textit{T}$-linear electrical resistance, and a sign-change of its temperature dependence mark the emergence of pseudogap in this hydride. By directly altering microscopic interactions, pressure provides a powerful tuning knob for the exploration of condensed phases and geophysical phenomena. The megabar regime represents an exciting frontier, where recent discoveries include novel high-temperature superconductors, as well as structural and valence phase transitions. However, at such high pressures, many conventional measurement techniques fail. Here, we demonstrate the ability to perform local magnetometry inside of a diamond anvil cell with sub-micron spatial resolution at megabar pressures. Our approach utilizes a shallow layer of Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) color centers implanted directly within the anvil; crucially, we choose a crystal cut compatible with the intrinsic symmetries of the NV center to enable functionality at megabar pressures. We apply our technique to characterize a recently discovered hydride superconductor, CeH$_9$. By performing simultaneous magnetometry and electrical transport measurements, we observe the dual signatures of superconductivity: local diamagnetism characteristic of the Meissner effect and a sharp drop of the resistance to near zero. By locally mapping the Meissner effect and flux trapping, we directly image the geometry of superconducting regions, revealing significant inhomogeneities at the micron scale. Our work brings quantum sensing to the megabar frontier and enables the closed loop optimization of superhydride materials synthesis.

The search for high-temperature superconductors in hydrides under high pressure has always been a research hotspot. Hydrogen-based superconductors offer an avenue to achieve the long-sought goal of superconductivity at room temperature. We systematically explore the high-pressure phase diagram, electronic properties, lattice dynamics and superconductivity of the ternary Ca-Al-H system using ab initio methods. We found two stable ternary hydrides at 50 GPa: Cmcm-CaAlH5 and Pnnm-CaAl2H8, which both are semiconductors. At 200 GPa, a new phase of P21/m-CaAlH5, P4/mmm-CaAlH7 and a metastable compound Immm-Ca2AlH12 were found. Furthermore, P4/mmm-CaAlH7 has obvious phonon softening of high frequency vibrations along the Z-A direction, point A and point X, which improves the strength of electron-phonon coupling. Therefore, a superconducting transition temperature Tc of 71 K is generated at 50 GPa. In addition, the thermodynamic metastable Immm-Ca2AlH12 exhibits a superconducting transition temperature of 118 K at 250 GPa. Recently, room-temperature superconductor has been claimed in a nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride at near-ambient pressure [Nature 615, 244 (2023)]. Using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectra analysis, the authors believed that the superconducting properties can most probably be attributed to Fm-3m-LuH3{\delta}N{\epsilon}. Here, we systematic study the phase diagram of Lu-N-H at 1 GPa by using first-principle theory and find that there have no thermodynamically stable ternary compounds. Besides, we analyzed the dynamically stability and superconducting properties of N-doped Fm-3m-LuH3 using virtual crystal approximation (VCA) and supercell method. Our theoretical results show that the Tc of N-doped LuH3 cannot reach the level of room-temperature.

Room-temperature superconductivity has been a long-standing goal for scientific progress and human development. Thermodynamic stability is a prerequisite for material synthesis and application. Here, we perform a combination of high-throughput screening and structural search and uncover two thermodynamically stable room-temperature superconductors, Fd-3m-Li2NaH17 and Pm-3n-LiNa3H23, exhibiting extraordinary critical temperature of 340 K at 300 GPa and 310 K at 350 GPa, respectively. Li2NaH17 possesses the highest Tc among all the thermodynamically stable ternary hydrides hitherto found. The dominated H density of states at the Fermi level and the strong Fermi surface nesting are favorable for the emergence of room-temperature superconductivity. Their excellent superconducting properties help us understand the mechanism of room-temperature superconductivity and find new room-temperature superconductors. Interestingly, the structures of LiNa3H23 and Li2NaH17 equal to the identified type-I and II clathrate geometry. Our results provide a structural reference and theoretical guidance for later experimental structure determination and theoretical search for high temperature superconductors.

Achieving superconductivity at room temperature (RT) is a holy grail in physics. Recent discoveries on high-Tc superconductivity in binary hydrides H3S and LaH10 at high pressure have directed the search for RT superconductors to compress hydrides with conventional electron-phonon mechanisms. Here, we predict an exceptional family of superhydrides under high pressures, MH12 (M = Mg, Sc, Zr, Hf, Lu), all exhibiting RT superconductivity with calculated Tcs ranging from 313 to 398 K. In contrast to H3S and LaH10, the hydrogen sublattice in MH12 is arranged as quasi-atomic H2 units. This unique configuration is closely associated with high Tc, attributed to the high electronic density of states derived from H2 antibonding states at the Fermi level and the strong electron-phonon coupling related to the bending vibration of H2 and H-M-H. Notably, MgH12 and ScH12 remain dynamically stable even at pressure below 100 GPa. Our findings offer crucial insights into achieving RT superconductivity and pave the way for innovative directions in experimental research.

Yttrium superhydrides has attracted much attention due to their multiple stoichiometries and excellent superconductivities under high pressure. Especially, YH9 have a Tc of 243 K, which is the second highest Tc among all binary hydrides. It exhibits a positive pressure dependence of Tc below 200 GPa, contrary to the results of theoretical prediction. In order to explore the origin of Tc at low pressure, we extensively investigated the crystal structure of YH9 at different pressure, and found a distorted cage structure with a symmetry of Pnma. This phase has the lowest enthalpy at pressure below 220 GPa, and its X-ray diffraction patterns is consistent with experimental data. Most importantly, the pressure dependence of Tc in phase Pnma is in line with the experimental results. Further calculations show the structural distortion strongly affect the lattice vibration and electron-phonon coupling, leads to the Pnma phase exhibiting a positive pressure dependence of Tc.

Compressed hydrogen-rich compounds have received extensive attention as appealing contenders for superconductors, and further challenges are maintaining the stability and superconductivity of hydrides at lower pressures. In this work, we found several novel hydrides YZrH6, YZrH8 and YZrH12 with excellent superconductivity in the Y-Zr-H ternary system. Interestingly, YZrH6 with an A15-type structure can maintain dynamic stability down to 0.01 GPa and still with a critical temperature (Tc) of 16 K. YZrH8 and YZrH12 have high Tc of 70 K and 183 K at 200 GPa and 160 GPa, respectively. The phonon modes associated with H atoms contribute significantly to the electron-phonon coupling, and the H-driven electronic density of states play an important role in superconductivity. These findings highlight relationship between the H-driven electronic density of states, electron-phonon coupling and the superconductivity in a distinct class of hydrides, opening new avenues for designing and optimizing new hydrogen-rich high temperature superconductors., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

Room temperature superconductivity is a dream that mankind has been chasing for a century. In recent years, the synthesis of H3S, LaH10 and C-S-H system has gradually made this dream a reality. But the extreme pressures required for the metallization of hydrogen-based superconductors limit their applications. In this work, we design a series of high temperature superconductors that can be stable at moderate pressures by incorporating heavy rare earth elements Yb/Lu into sodalite-like clathrate hydrides. In particular, the critical temperatures of Y3LuH24, YLuH12 and YLu3H24 are 283 K, 275 K and 288 K, respectively, which are close to or have reached room temperature, and the required pressure for stabilization of these hydrides is about 120 GPa which is significantly lower than that of reported room temperature superconductors. Our work provides an effective method for the rational design of low-pressure stabilized hydrogen-based superconductors with high-Tc and will stimulate further experimental exploration.

Covalent and ionic polyhydrides have become the two main camps in searching for the high-temperature superconductors under pressure. They have been considered as important platforms for exploring ternary or multiple hydrides in order to further increase the Tc or decrease the stabilization pressure. In this work, we successfully synthesized ternary hexagonal La-Ce polyhydrides stable in the pressure range of 95-130 GPa by laser-heating the La-Ce alloy (initial ratio La:Ce=2.5-3.5) in ammonia borane. Superconductivity at 176 K was strikingly preserved to about 100 GPa. The extrapolated upper critical field Hc2(0) reached 216 T at 100 GPa, the highest value among the synthesized polyhydrides. We also performed the contrast experiments and stabilized binary high-temperature superconducting LaHx with Tc-103 K at 78 GPa. In the pressure range of 95-130 GPa, the ternary hexagonal La-Ce-H system exhibits higher Tc than the binary La-H system, with the maximum difference of 100 K, and the compounds of both systems were synthesized at the same pressure and temperature conditions. These results clearly indicate that the discovered La-Ce-H system not only enriches the high-temperature superconducting hydrides but also realizes high-Tc at moderate pressures.

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is well suitable for searching for monochromatic and sharp $\gamma$-ray structures in the GeV$-$TeV range thanks to its unprecedented high energy resolution. In this work, we search for $\gamma$-ray line structures using five years of DAMPE data. To improve the sensitivity, we develop two types of dedicated data sets (including the BgoOnly data which is the first time to be used in the data analysis for the calorimeter-based gamma-ray observatories) and adopt the signal-to-noise ratio optimized regions of interest (ROIs) for different DM density profiles. No line signals or candidates are found between 10 and 300 GeV in the Galaxy. The constraints on the velocity-averaged cross section for $\chi\chi \to \gamma\gamma$ and the decay lifetime for $\chi \to \gamma\nu$, both at 95% confidence level, have been calculated and the systematic uncertainties have been taken into account. Comparing to the previous Fermi-LAT results, though DAMPE has an acceptance smaller by a factor of $\sim 10$, similar constraints on the DM parameters are achieved and below 100 GeV the lower limits on the decay lifetime are even stronger by a factor of a few. Recently, several research groups announced reaching the point of metallization of hydrogen above 400 GPa. Following the mainstream of extensive investigations of compressed polyhydrides, in this work we demonstrate that small (4 atom %) doping of molecular hydrogen by strontium leads to a dramatic reduction in the metallization pressure to about 200 GPa. Studying the high-pressure chemistry of the Sr-H system at 56-180 GPa, we observed the formation of several previously unknown compounds: C2/m-Sr$_3$H$_{13}$, pseudocubic SrH$_6$, SrH$_9$ with cubic F-43m Sr sublattice, and pseudotetragonal P1-SrH$_{22}$, the metal hydride with the highest hydrogen content discovered so far. Unlike Ca and Y, strontium forms molecular semiconducting polyhydrides, whereas calcium and yttrium polyhydrides are high-Tc superconductors with an atomic H sublattice. The latter phase, SrH$_{22}$ or Sr$_{0.04}$H$_{0.96}$, may be considered as a convenient model of the consistent bandgap closure and metallization of hydrogen. Using the impedance measurements in diamond anvil cells at 300-440 K, we estimated the direct bandgap of the Pm-3n-like compound P1-SrH$_6$ to be 0.44-0.51 eV at 150 GPa, and its metallization pressure to be 220 GPa. Together with the machine learning interatomic potentials, the impedance spectroscopy allowed us to estimate the diffusion coefficients of hydrogen D$_H$ = 1.0-2.8 E-10 m$^2$/s in SrH$_6$ and 1.2-2.1 E-9 m$^2$/s in P1-SrH$_{22}$ at 500-600 K., Comment: Supporting information was compressed and reduced by 2 times to 36 figures

The discovery of the high temperature superconducting state in compounds of hydrogen, carbon and sulfur with the critical temperature (Tc) of 288 K at high pressure is an important milestone towards room-temperature superconductors. Here, we have extensively investigated the high-pressure phases of CS2H10, and found four phases Cmc21, P3m1, P-3m1 and Pm. Among them, P3m1 can be dynamically stable at pressure as low as 50 GPa, and Cmc21 has high Tc of 155 K at 150 GPa. Both of Cmc21 and P3m1 are host-guest hydrides, in which CH4 molecules are inserted into Im-3m-H3S and R3m-H3S sublattices, respectively. Their Tc is dominated by the H3S lattice inside. The insertion of CH4 greatly reduces the pressure required for the stability of the original H3S lattice, but it has a negative impact on superconductivity that cannot be ignored. By studying the effect of CH4 insertion in the H3S lattice, we can design hydrides with Tc close to that of H3S and a greatly reduced pressure required for stability., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Manganese nitrides should be with amazing properties and promised application, because manganese atom is particular for its magnetism, valence states, high electron density, etc., and N atoms in compounds form different substructures. It is hard to good synthesize manganese nitride crystals with all established means, therefore, theoretical studies are highly welcome. In this study, we systematically examined the stoichiometric phases spaces of Mn-N compounds from 0 to 100 GPa based on ab initio calculations, and constructed the high pressure magnetic phase diagram. Remarkably, N-rich MnN4 with a planar N4 ring was discovered for the first time in the pressure range from 40 to 100 GPa. The electronic structures reveal that the N4 ring is driven by the sp2 hybridization of nitrogen atoms. This phase with Tc=1.6 K and high bulk modulus B =381 GPa, which make it potentially interesting as a hard superconductive material. Moreover, the phase transition sequence for the MnN compound is summarized renewedly, the semi-conducting NM-zb phase (5 GPa) first transforms to metallic AFM-NiAs (40 GPa), which further transforms to the more stable metallic FM-rs phase. The mechanical properties show that covalent interaction has a great effect on N-rich structures' hardness and hardly effect on Mn-rich structures in Mn-N compounds.

Hydrogen-based superconductors provide a route to the long-sought goal of room-temperature superconductivity, but the high pressures required to metallize these materials limit their immediate application. For example, carbonaceous sulfur hydride, the first room-temperature superconductor, can reach a critical temperature (Tc) of 288 K only at the extreme pressure of 267 GPa. The next recognized challenge is the realization of room-temperature superconductivity at significantly lower pressures. Here, we propose a strategy for the rational design of high-temperature superconductors at low pressures by alloying small-radius elements and hydrogen to form ternary hydride superconductors with alloy backbones. We identify a hitherto unknown fluorite-type backbone in compositions of the form AXH8, which exhibit high temperature superconductivity at moderate pressures. The Fm-3m phase of LaBeH8, with a fluorite-type H-Be alloy backbone, is predicted to be metastable and superconducting with a Tc ~ 191 K at 50 GPa; a substantially lower pressure than that required by the geometrically similar clathrate hydride LaH10 (170 GPa). The discoveries of high-temperature superconductivity in H3S and LaH10 have excited the search for superconductivity in compressed hydrides. In contrast to rapidly expanding theoretical studies, high-pressure experiments on hydride superconductors are expensive and technically challenging. Here we experimentally discover superconductivity in two new phases,Fm-3m-CeH10 (SC-I phase) and P63/mmc-CeH9 (SC-II phase) at pressures that are much lower (<100 GPa) than those needed to stabilize other polyhydride superconductors. Superconductivity was evidenced by a sharp drop of the electrical resistance to zero, and by the decrease of the critical temperature in deuterated samples and in an external magnetic field. SC-I has Tc=115 K at 95 GPa, showing expected decrease on further compression due to decrease of the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) coefficient {\lambda} (from 2.0 at 100 GPa to 0.8 at 200 GPa). SC-II has Tc = 57 K at 88 GPa, rapidly increasing to a maximum Tc ~100 K at 130 GPa, and then decreasing on further compression. This maximum of Tc is due to a maximum of {\lambda} at the phase transition from P63/mmc-CeH9 into a symmetry-broken modification C2/c-CeH9. The pressure-temperature conditions of synthesis affect the actual hydrogen content, and the actual value of Tc. Anomalously low pressures of stability of cerium superhydrides make them appealing for studies of superhydrides and for designing new superhydrides with even lower pressures of stability.

We conducted a joint experimental-theoretical investigation of the high-pressure chemistry of europium polyhydrides at pressures of 86-130 GPa. We discovered several novel magnetic Eu superhydrides stabilized by anharmonic effects: cubic $EuH_{9}$, hexagonal $EuH_{9}$, and an unexpected cubic (Pm-3n) clathrate phase, $Eu_{8}H_{46}$. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that cubic $EuH_{9}$ has antiferromagnetic ordering with T(Neel) up to 24 K, whereas hexagonal $EuH_{9}$ and Pm-3n-$Eu_{8}H_{46}$ possess ferromagnetic ordering with T(Curie) = 137 and 336 K, respectively. The electron-phonon interaction is weak in all studied europium hydrides, and their magnetic ordering excludes s-wave superconductivity, except, perhaps, for distorted pseudohexagonal $EuH_{9}$. The equations of state predicted within the DFT+U approach (the Hubbard corrections were found within linear response theory) are in close agreement with the experimental data. This work shows the great influence of the atomic radius on symmetry-breaking distortions of the crystal structures of superhydrides and on their thermodynamic stability.

Lattice distortion due to octahedral rotation and distortion are high focussed, and it produces profound effect on a material's properties, such as its bandgap, magnetism and optical properties etc. Rutile-type \b{eta}-MnO2 is a wide used non-Perovskite magnetic material with octahedrons. We systematically studied its stability, electronic structures, magnetic structures, and optical properties within 0-100 GPa with density-functional theory (DFT). We find that the competition between bondlength and bonding angle leads its bandgap enlarging or shrinking within in the Pnnm phase with increasing pressure, because of the interaction of Mn-d and O-p states. We also find same pressure indused bandgap evolutions in the Pnnm phases of SiO2, GeO2, SnO2 and PbO2. The different ways of octahedral connection in Pnnm phase and Pa-3 phase leads to an interesting pressure-induced bandgap enlarging. And in the Pa-3 phase, the band gap can be tuned to 1.34 eV by pressure to meet the Shockley-Queisser limit. Moreover the two high pressure phases can be quenched to ambient pressure. Together with its mechanical, optical and antiferromagnetic properties, it ensures MnO2's application as a photovoltaic material for all working condition with multi-purpose. This study extends MnO2's application and give some new mechanism of pressure induced bandgap enlargement.

Superionic states are phases of matters that can simultaneously exhibit some of the properties of a fluid and of a solid. Superionic states of ice, H$_{3}$O, He-H$_{2}$O or He-NH$_{3}$ compounds have been reported in previous works. Silicon, sodium, and hydrogen are abundant elements inside the earth. Here, we use ab initio calculations to show that, at extreme conditions inside the earth, Na, Si, and H can form many hypervalent compounds that some of them can exist every close to ambient pressure, and surprisingly a previously unknown type of superionic state of $P\overline3m1 - $Na$_{2}$SiH$_{6}$ can form as well. Our work focused on new superionic state of Na$_{2}$SiH$_{6}$, and the results also reveal several different hypervalent Si-H anions discovered, which are different from individual SiH$_{5}^{\,-}$ and octahedral SiH$_{6}^{\,2-}$ in previous research of ternary alkali hypervalent silicon hydrides. Our work provides some advice on further investigations on potential ternary hydrides inside the earth.

The high critical temperature phase of lanthanum hydrides deserves special attention because this phase displays the highest observed critical temperature. We focus on the evaluation of the critical temperature, isotope coefficient, and their pressure dependence of this phase (Fm3m phase of the LaH10 compound). By combining the method of two coupling constants, describing the interaction with the optical and acoustic modes, and two characteristic frequencies with first-principle calculations we are able to analyze the role of the light hydrogen in the amplitude of the critical temperature in this unique compound. Specifically, the critical temperature of 254 K and the isotope coefficient of 0.45 are evaluated at high pressure, and the results are in good agreement with the experimental data. The peculiar decrease in the value of the critical temperature upon further increase in pressure is explained by the presence of a flat region on the Fermi surface and the appearance of a two-gap structure, which should be experimentally observable by tunneling spectroscopy., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures,2 tables

Following the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in the La-H system, where for the recently discovered fcc-LaH10 a record critical temperature Tc = 250 K was achieved [Drozdov et al., Nature, 569, 528 (2019) and Somayazulu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 027001 (2019)], we studied the formation of new chemical compounds in the barium-hydrogen system at pressures up to 173 GPa. Using in situ generation of hydrogen from NH3BH3, we synthesized previously unknown superhydride BaH12 with a pseudocubic (fcc) Ba sublattice, which was observed in a wide range of pressures from 75 to 173 GPa in four independent experiments. DFT calculations indicate a close agreement between the theoretical and experimental equations of state. In addition to BaH12, we identified previously known P6/mmm BaH2 and possibly BaH10 and BaH6 as impurities in the samples. Ab initio calculations show that newly discovered semimetallic BaH12 contains H2, H3 molecular units and detached H12 chains. Barium dodecahydride is a unique molecular hydride with metallic conductivity which demonstrates a superconducting transition around 20 K at 140 GPa in agreement with calculations (19-32 K). The interpretation of the multiphase XRD data was possible thanks to the development of new Python scripts for postprocessing the results of evolutionary searches. The recent discovery of H3S and LaH10 superconductors with record high superconducting transition temperatures, Tc, at high pressure, has fueled the search for room-temperature superconductivity in the compressed superhydrides. Here we predict the existence of an unprecedented hexagonal HfH10, with an extraordinarily high Tc of around 213-234 K at 250 GPa. In HfH10, the H atoms are arranged in clusters to form a planar "penta-graphene-like" sublattice, in contrast to the covalent sixfold cubic structure in H3S and clathrate-like structure in LaH10. The Hf atom acts as a "precompressor" and electron donor to the hydrogen sublattice. This "penta-graphene-like" H10 structure is also found in ZrH10, ScH10 and LuH10 at high pressure, each material showing a high Tc ranging from 134 to 220 kelvin. Our study of dense superhydrides with "penta-graphene-like" layered structures opens the door to the exploration and exploitation of a new class of high Tc superconductors.

The current search for room-temperature superconductivity is inspired by the unique properties of the electron-phonon interaction in metal superhydrides. Encouraged by the recently found highest-$T_C$ superconductor fcc-$LaH_{10}$, here we discover several superhydrides of another lanthanide - neodymium. We identify three novel metallic Nd-H phases at pressure range from 85 to 135 GPa: $I4/mmm$-$NdH_4$, $C2/c$-$NdH_7$, $P6_3/mmc$-$NdH_9$, synthesized by laser-heating metal samples in NH3BH3 media for in situ generation of hydrogen. A lower trihydride $Fm\bar{3}m$-$NdH_3$ is found at pressures from 2 to 52 GPa. $I4/mmm$-$NdH_4$ and $C2/c$-$NdH_7$ are stable from 135 down to 85 GPa, and $P6_3/mmc$-$NdH_9$ from 110 to 130 GPa. Measurements of the electrical resistance of NdH9 demonstrate a possible superconducting transition at ~4.5 K in $P6_3/mmc$-$NdH_9$. Our theoretical calculations predict that all the neodymium hydrides have antiferromagnetic order at pressures below 150 GPa and represent one of the first discovered examples of strongly correlated superhydrides with large exchange spin-splitting in the electron band structure (> 450 meV).
