Abstract

The 9.2 keV nuclear transition in 227Th was studied in the β−-decay of 227Ac by means of the internal conversion electron spectroscopy to clarify the spin-parity assignment of the ground state and the two lowest excited states of 227Th. The transition multipolarity was proved to be of mixed character M1 + E2 and the spectroscopic admixture parameter δ2(E2/M1)=0.695±0.248 (|δ(E2/M1)|=0.834±0.149) was determined. Nonzero value of δ(E2/M1) questioned the present theoretical interpretation of low-lying levels of 227Th. Calculations performed prefer the 1/2+, 3/2+, and 3/2+ sequence instead of the adopted 1/2+, 5/2+ and 3/2+ one for the 0.0, 9.2, and 24.3 keV levels, respectively.

Abstract

Introduction 44Sc is of great interest as a positron emission tomography (PET) radionuclide due to its suitable nuclear characteristics: Eβ+max = 1.47MeV, branching ratio 94.3% and convenient half-life of 3.97 h. Here, 44Sc was produced via the widely used reaction 44Ca (p,n)44Sc using natural calcium as a target. Methods The irradiation was performed at TRIUMF using the 13 MeV cyclotron. The separation consisted of a combination of DGA branched resin and Dowex 50Wx8 (200–400 mesh). The distribution coefficients of Sc3+ on Dowex 50Wx8 (NH4+ form, 200–400 mesh) with ammonium α-hydroxyisobutyrate (pH = 4.8) medium were determined in this study. Results and conclusion The tested scheme allows both a reliable separation of 44Sc from the target material as well as from the other competitive metals and a final fraction with high specific activity. The achieved radiochemical yield was 95 ± 3%.

Abstract

The method of Time Differential γγ Perturbed Angle Correlations (TDPAC) was used to gain additional information on the position of different doping ions in the crystal structure of ferrites with spinel-like structure. For this purpose ferrites of the type MFe2O4 (M(II) = Co, Zn, Ni) were doped with the radionuclides 140La(140Ce), 172Lu(172Yb), 172Hf(172Lu(172Yb)) and 111In(111Cd), where the daughter nuclides are between brackets. In order to evaluate the effect of the synthetic procedure and to gain more information about the samples structure, ferrites modified by stable Yb3+- and Lu3+- ions were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, TEM. The homogeneity of all samples obtained was proved. The morphology studied by TEM shows a uniform distribution of grain sizes. TDPAC spectra were recorded below and above the Curie temperature. The changes of the TDPAC spectra with temperature were observed for all the ions implanted in the studied ferrites. It was found that the type of spinel structure (normal or inverse) does not influence the positions of 172Lu. The results suggest that the higher frequency shown by the nuclides corresponds to occupation of the octahedral position in the spinel structure.

Abstract

The SuperNEMO experiment will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$), and study the Standard-Model double-beta decay process ($2\nu\beta\beta$). The SuperNEMO technology can measure the energy of each of the electrons produced in a double-beta ($\beta\beta$) decay, and can reconstruct the topology of their individual tracks. The study of the double-beta decay spectrum requires very accurate energy calibration to be carried out periodically. The SuperNEMO Demonstrator Module will be calibrated using 42 calibration sources, each consisting of a droplet of $^{207}$Bi within a frame assembly. The quality of these sources, which depends upon the entire $^{207}$Bi droplet being contained within the frame, is key for correctly calibrating SuperNEMO's energy response. In this paper, we present a novel method for precisely measuring the exact geometry of the deposition of $^{207}$Bi droplets within the frames, using Timepix pixel detectors. Abstract

The distribution of some rare-earth elements (REEs) on Uranium and TEtraValent Actinides (UTEVA) resin was determined from different concentrations of inorganic (HCl, HNO3, HClO4, HPF6) and one organic acid – CCl3COOH. Low sorption of all REEs in the range of 1 M–5 M HNO3 was observed. In more concentrated HNO3, a rapid increase of the distribution coefficients (Kd) was noticed with an increase in the atomic number of the lanthanides as well as in Y and Sc. The system UTEVA–CCl3COOH showed a higher selectivity for Eu(III). Chromatographic elution profiles were checked in order to confirm the obtained Kd values.

Abstract

The double-beta decay of 82Se to the 0 1 + excited state of 82Kr has been studied with the NEMO-3 detector using 0.93 kg of enriched 82Se measured for 4.75 y, corresponding to an exposure of 4.42 kg⋅y. A dedicated analysis to reconstruct the γ-rays has been performed to search for events in the 2e2γ channel. No evidence of a 2 ν β β decay to the 0 1 + state has been observed and a limit of T 1 / 2 2 ν ( Se 82 , 0 g s + → 0 1 + ) > 1.3 × 10 21 y at 90% CL has been set. Concerning the 0 ν β β decay to the 0 1 + state, a limit for this decay has been obtained with T 1 / 2 0 ν ( Se 82 , 0 g s + → 0 1 + ) > 2.3 × 10 22 y at 90% CL, independently from the 2 ν β β decay process. These results are obtained for the first time with a tracko-calo detector, reconstructing every particle in the final state.

Abstract

The full data set of the NEMO-3 experiment has been used to measure the half-life of the two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo to the ground state of $^{100}$Ru, $T_{1/2} = \left[ 6.81 \pm 0.01\,\left(\mbox{stat}\right) ^{+0.38}_{-0.40}\,\left(\mbox{syst}\right) \right] \times10^{18}$ y. The two-electron energy sum, single electron energy spectra and distribution of the angle between the electrons are presented with an unprecedented statistics of $5\times10^5$ events and a signal-to-background ratio of ~80. Clear evidence for the Single State Dominance model is found for this nuclear transition. Limits on Majoron emitting neutrinoless double beta decay modes with spectral indices of n=2,3,7, as well as constraints on Lorentz invariance violation and on the bosonic neutrino contribution to the two-neutrino double beta decay mode are obtained., 11 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

International audience; AbstractA radiochemical method for producing 82Se sources with an ultra-low level of contamination of natural radionuclides (40K, decay products of 232Th and 238U) has been developed based on cation-exchange chromatographic purification with reverse removal of impurities. It includes chromatographic separation (purification), reduction, conditioning (which includes decantation, centrifugation, washing, grinding, and drying), and 82Se foil production. The conditioning stage, during which highly dispersed elemental selenium is obtained by the reduction of purified selenious acid (H2SeO3) with sulfur dioxide (SO2) represents the crucial step in the preparation of radiopure 82Se samples. The natural selenium (600 g) was first produced in this procedure in order to refine the method. The technique developed was then used to produce 2.5 kg of radiopure enriched selenium (82Se). The produced 82Se samples were wrapped in polyethylene (12 μm thick) and radionuclides present in the sample were analyzed with the BiPo-3 detector. The radiopurity of the plastic materials (chromatographic column material and polypropylene chemical vessels), which were used at all stages, was determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The radiopurity of the 82Se foils was checked by measurements with the BiPo-3 spectrometer, which confirmed the high purity of the final product. The measured contamination level for 208Tl was 8–54 μBq/kg, and for 214Bi the detection limit of 600 μBq/kg has been reached.

Abstract

Using data from the NEMO-3 experiment, we have measured the two-neutrino double beta decay ( $2\nu \beta \beta $ ) half-life of$^{82}$ Se as $T_{\smash {1/2}}^{2\nu } \!=\! \left[ 9.39 \pm 0.17\left( \text{ stat }\right) \pm 0.58\left( \text{ syst }\right) \right] \times 10^{19}$ y under the single-state dominance hypothesis for this nuclear transition. The corresponding nuclear matrix element is $\left| M^{2\nu }\right| = 0.0498 \pm 0.0016$ . In addition, a search for neutrinoless double beta decay ( $0\nu \beta \beta $ ) using 0.93 kg of$^{82}$ Se observed for a total of 5.25 y has been conducted and no evidence for a signal has been found. The resulting half-life limit of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu } > 2.5 \times 10^{23} \,\text{ y } \,(90\%\,\text{ C.L. })$ for the light neutrino exchange mechanism leads to a constraint on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $\langle m_{\nu } \rangle < \left( 1.2{-}3.0\right) \,\text{ eV }$ , where the range reflects $0\nu \beta \beta $ nuclear matrix element values from different calculations. Furthermore, constraints on lepton number violating parameters for other $0\nu \beta \beta $ mechanisms, such as right-handed currents, majoron emission and R-parity violating supersymmetry modes have been set.

Abstract

The KLM+KLN Auger electron spectrum of rubidium (Z=37) emitted in the electron capture decay of radioactive $^{83}$Sr in a polycrystalline platinum matrix and also $^{85}$Sr in polycrystalline platinum and carbon matrices as well as in an evaporated layer onto a carbon backing was experimentally studied in detail for the first time using a combined electrostatic electron spectrometer. Energies, relative intensities, and natural widths of fifteen basic spectrum components were determined and compared with both theoretical predictions and experimental data for krypton (Z=36). Relative spectrum line energies obtained from the semi-empirical calculations in intermediate coupling scheme were found to agree within 3$\sigma$ with the measured values while disagreement with experiment exceeding 3$\sigma$ was often observed for values obtained from our multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations. The absolute energy of the dominant spectrum component given by the semi-empirical approach agrees within 1$\sigma$ with the measured value. Shifts of + (0.2$\pm$0.2) and - (1.9$\pm$0.2) eV were measured for the dominant KLM spectrum components between the $^{85}$Sr sources prepared by vacuum evaporation on and implanted into the carbon foil, respectively, relative to $^{85}$Sr implanted into the platinum foil. A value of (713$\pm$2) eV was determined for the energy difference of the dominant components of the KLM+KLN Auger electron spectra of rubidium and krypton generated in the polycrystalline platinum matrix. From the detailed analysis of the measured data and available theoretical results, the general conclusion can be drawn that the proper description of the KLM+KLN Auger electron spectrum for Z around 37 should still be based on intermediate coupling of angular momenta taking into account relativistic effects.

Abstract

DANSS is a highly segmented 1~m${}^3$ plastic scintillator detector. Its 2500 one meter long scintillator strips have a Gd-loaded reflective cover. The DANSS detector is placed under an industrial 3.1~$\mathrm{GW_{th}}$ reactor of the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant 350~km NW from Moscow. The distance to the core is varied on-line from 10.7~m to 12.7~m. The reactor building provides about 50~m water-equivalent shielding against the cosmic background. DANSS detects almost 5000 $\widetilde\nu_e$ per day at the closest position with the cosmic background less than 3$\%$. The inverse beta decay process is used to detect $\widetilde\nu_e$. Sterile neutrinos are searched for assuming the $4\nu$ model (3 active and 1 sterile $\nu$). The exclusion area in the $\Delta m_{14}^2,\sin^22\theta_{14}$ plane is obtained using a ratio of positron energy spectra collected at different distances. Therefore results do not depend on the shape and normalization of the reactor $\widetilde\nu_e$ spectrum, as well as on the detector efficiency. Results are based on 966 thousand antineutrino events collected at 3 distances from the reactor core. Abstract

We report the results of a first experimental search for lepton number violation by four units in the neutrinoless quadruple-β decay of Nd150 using a total exposure of 0.19 kg yr recorded with the NEMO-3 detector at the Modane Underground Laboratory. We find no evidence of this decay and set lower limits on the half-life in the range T1/2>(1.1–3.2)×1021 yr at the 90% C.L., depending on the model used for the kinematic distributions of the emitted electrons.

Abstract

The low-energy electron spectra emitted in the radioactive decay of the $^{83}$Rb and $^{83}$Sr isotopes were measured with a combined electrostatic electron spectrometer. Radioactive sources used were prepared by ion implantation of $^{83}$Sr into a high purity polycrystalline platinum foil at 30 keV and by vacuum-evaporation deposition of $^{83}$ Rb on the same type of foil. From the measured conversion electron spectra, the electron binding energies (referenced to the Fermi level) for the K, L$_1$ , L$_2$ , L$_3$ , M$_1$ , M$_2$, and M$_3$ shell/subshells of krypton in the platinum host were determined to be 14 316.4(12), 1 914.3(9), 1 720.3(9), 1 667.6(9), 281.5(9), 209.6(13), and 201.2(15) eV, respectively, and those for the evaporated layer were observed to be lower by 0.7(1) eV. For both host matrices, values of 2.3(2), 4.6(2), 1.7(2), 1.3(2), and 3.2(3) eV were obtained for the krypton K, L$_1$ , L$_2$ , L$_3$ , and M$_1$ natural atomic level widths, respectively. The absolute energies of 10 838.5(9) and 10 839.5(10) eV were measured for the KL$_2$L$_3$ ($^{1}$D$_2$) Auger transition in krypton implanted in Pt and generated in the evaporated rubidium layer, respectively. A value of 601.0(8) eV was measured for the energy difference of the KL$_2$L$_3$ ($^{1}$D$_2$) transitions in Rb and Kr in the Pt host. Multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations of the krypton KLL transition energies and intensities were also performed.

Abstract

The BiPo-3 detector is a low radioactive detector dedicated to measuring ultra-low natural contaminations of 208Tl and 214Bi in thin materials, initially developed to measure the radiopurity of the double β decay source foils of the SuperNEMO experiment at the μBq/kg level. The BiPo-3 technique consists in installing the foil of interest between two thin ultra-radiopure scintillators coupled to low radioactive photomultipliers. The design and performances of the detector are presented. In this paper, the final results of the 208Tl and 214Bi activity measurements of the first enriched 82Se foils are reported for the first time, showing the capability of the detector to reach sensitivities in the range of some μBq/kg.

Abstract

The NEMO-3 experiment at the Modane Underground Laboratory has investigated the double-$\beta$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$. Using $5.25$ yr of data recorded with a $6.99\,{\rm g}$ sample of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$, approximately $150$ double-$\beta$ decay candidate events have been selected with a signal-to-background ratio greater than $3$. The half-life for the two-neutrino double-$\beta$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$ has been measured to be $T^{2\nu}_{1/2}\,=\,[6.4\, ^{+0.7}_{-0.6}{\rm (stat.)} \, ^{+1.2}_{-0.9}{\rm (syst.)}] \times 10^{19}\,{\rm yr}$. A search for neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$ yields a null result and a corresponding lower limit on the half-life is found to be $T^{0\nu}_{1/2} > 2.0 \times 10^{22}\,{\rm yr}$ at $90\%$ confidence level, translating into an upper limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $ < 6.0 - 26$ ${\rm eV}$, with the range reflecting different nuclear matrix element calculations. Limits are also set on models involving Majoron emission and right-handed currents.

Abstract

Successful utilization of medical isotopes in the radiolabeling reactions to a significant degree depends on the technically achievable specific activity. In this respect, the Szilard-Chalmers effect is considered in detail as a radiochemical tool to increase the specific activity of radionuclides produced by direct nuclear reactions. In the present study, a physico-chemical model is described utilizing the specific aspects of thermodynamically and kinetically stabilised metal-ligand complexes. The approach is applied as a proofof- principle study to increase the specific activity of 166Ho, produced via the (n, γ) nuclear reaction. As a target material, 165Ho-DOTA is used. In this case, 166Ho, the product nucleus of the neutron capture reaction, is obtained chemically as non-complexed cationic 166HoIII species in situ. Consequently, it can effectively and quantitatively be separated from the inactive 165Ho-DOTA target material by means of fast and simple chromatographic, column-based methods. We were able to verify the physico-chemical model by the experimentally obtained data. For the first time we quantitatively describe the interaction of the ligand-framework of the target material (e.g. the Ho-DOTA complex) with the radiation field of the nuclear reactor. The analysis of the experimental data allows to assume that radionuclides with half-lives of T1/2 < 64 h can be produced at a TRIGA II nuclear reactor via the Szilard-Chalmers effect with specific activities higher than in the case of direct irradiation of common target materials such as oxides.

Abstract

140Nd was produced by irradiations of CeO2 and Pr2O3 targets leading to natCe(3He,xn) 140Nd and 141Pr(p,2n) 140Nd nuclear reactions. The practical yield of 140Nd at EOB in the former reaction over the energy range of E 3He = 33.5 → 0 MeV amounted to 3.5 MBq/μA h and in the latter reaction over the energy range of E p = 18.6→16.2 MeV to 15.5 MBq/μA h. These values correspond to about 41% and 60% of the respective theoretical values. Successful separations of the radionuclide were performed by means of cation-exchange chromatography resulting in decontamination factors of ≥108 and ≥7×105 for the cerium and praseodymium target materials, respectively. With the no-carrier-added 140Nd obtained, an efficient 140Nd/140Pr radionuclide generator system was developed and evaluated. The principle of the radiochemical separation is based on physico-chemical transitions (hot-atom effects) of the daughter 140Pr following the electron decay process of 140Nd. The parent radionuclide 140Nd(III) is quantitatively adsorbed on a solid phase matrix in the form of 140Nd-DOTA-conjugated complexes. The daughter nuclide 140Pr is generated in an ionic species and is easily separated using low volumes of various aqueous eluents. The elution yield is at least 93%, if an optimized eluent, such as DTPA solution is applied. The system remains stable at least over three half-lives of 140Nd, with high radiolytic stability and low 140Nd breakthrough. This radionuclide generator system 140Nd (T 1/2 = 3.37 d) provides the short-lived positron-emitting radiolanthanide 140Pr (T 1/2 = 3.4 min) for molecular imaging using positron emission tomography (PET).

Abstract

The low energy KLL Auger electrons of neon emitted after EC-decay of 22Na have been investigated with a 4 eV instrumental resolution using an electrostatic spectrometer and a solid state radioactive source. This is the first experimental investigation of the KLL Auger spectrum of neon from the solid state. Relative intensities and energies of all resolved spectrum components were determined. Measured absolute energy of the dominant KL2L3(1D) transition was found to be 824.5(19) eV, i.e. about 20 eV higher than that obtained in experiments with free Ne atoms. Within the experimental uncertainties, no influence of solid state effects on relative intensities of the KLL transitions was found.

Abstract

The application of radionuclide-labeled biomolecules such as monoclonal antibodies or antibody fragments for imaging purposes is called immunoscintigraphy . More specifically, when the nuclides used are positron emitters, such as zirconium-89, the technique is referred to as immuno-PET . Currently, there is an urgent need for radionuclides with a half-life which correlates well with the biological kinetics of the biomolecules under question and which can be attached to the proteins by robust labeling chemistry. 90 Nb is a promising candidate for in vivo immuno-PET , due its half-life of 14.6h and low β + energy of E mean =0.35MeV per decay. 95 Nb on the other hand, is a convenient alternative for longer-term ex vivo biodistribution studies, due to its longer half-life of ( t ½=35days) and its convenient, lower-cost production (reactor-based production). In this proof-of-principle work, the monoclonal antibody bevacizumab (Avastin ® ) was labeled with 95/90 Nb and in vitro and in vivo stability was evaluated in normal Swiss mice and in tumor-bearing SCID mice. Initial ex vivo experiments with 95 Nb-bevacizumab showed adequate tumor uptake, however at the same time high uptake in the liver, spleen and kidneys was observed. In order to investigate whether this behavior is due to instability of ⁎ Nb-bevacizumab or to the creation of other ⁎ Nb species in vivo , we performed biodistribution studies of 95 Nb-oxalate, 95 Nb-chloride and 95 Nb-Df. These potential metabolite species did not show any specific uptake, apart from bone accumulation for 95 Nb-oxalate and 95 Nb-chloride, which, interestingly, may serve as an "indicator" for the release of 90 Nb from labeled biomolecules. Concerning the initial uptake of 95 Nb-bevacizumab in non-tumor tissue, biodistribution of a higher specific activity radiolabeled antibody sample did show only negligible uptake in the liver, spleen, kidneys or bones. In-vivo imaging of a tumor-bearing SCID mouse after injection with 90 Nb-bevacizumab was acquired on an experimental small-animal PET camera, and indeed showed localization of the radiotracer in the tumor area. It is the first time that such results are described in the literature, and indicates promise of application of 90 Nb-labeled antibodies for the purposes of immuno -PET.

Abstract

The NEMO-3 detector, which had been operating in the Modane Underground Laboratory from 2003 to 2010, was designed to search for neutrinoless double $\beta$ ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay. We report final results of a search for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decays with $6.914$ kg of $^{100}$Mo using the entire NEMO-3 data set with a detector live time of $4.96$ yr, which corresponds to an exposure of 34.3 kg$\cdot$yr. We perform a detailed study of the expected background in the $0\nu\beta\beta$ signal region and find no evidence of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decays in the data. The level of observed background in the $0\nu\beta\beta$ signal region $[2.8-3.2]$ MeV is $0.44 \pm 0.13$ counts/yr/kg, and no events are observed in the interval $[3.2-10]$ MeV. We therefore derive a lower limit on the half-life of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decays in $^{100}$Mo of $T_{1/2}(0\nu\beta\beta)> 1.1 \times 10^{24}$ yr at the $90\%$ Confidence Level, under the hypothesis of light Majorana neutrino exchange. Depending on the model used for calculating nuclear matrix elements, the limit for the effective Majorana neutrino mass lies in the range $\langle m_{\nu} \rangle < 0.33$--$0.62$ eV. We also report constraints on other lepton-number violating mechanisms for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decays.

Abstract

Measurements of reactor antineutrino play an important role in the efforts at the frontier of the modern physics. The DANSS collaboration presents preliminary results of a one year run with a cubic meter solid state detector placed below 3.1 GW industrial light water reactor. The experiment is sensitive to sterile neutrino in the most interesting region of mixing parameter space. 2500 scintillation strips of the sensitive volume of the detector have multilayer passive shielding of copper, lead and borated polyethylene and active muon veto. Detector position below the reactor gives an advantage of overburden about 50 m of water equivalent providing factor of six in cosmic muon suppression and eliminating fast neutrons.The detector is placed on a vertically movable platform which allows to change the distance to the reactor core center in the range 10.7-12.7 m within a few minutes. The strips are read out individually by SiPMs and in groups of 50 by PMTs. 5000 inverse beta-decay events per day are collected in the fiducial volume, which is 78% of the whole detector, at the position closest to the reactor. Overburden, active veto and good segmentation of the detector result in an excellent signal to background ratio. The talk is dedicated to the data analysis and preliminary results. The experiment status is also presented.

Abstract

The low energy electron spectrum from the α-decay of 225Ac has been measured with 20 eV instrumental resolution using an electrostatic spectrometer and radioactive sources prepared by vacuum evaporation. The predicted 10.642(5) keV M1 + < 0.05% E2 nuclear transition in 221Fr have been revealed. Energies of 26.015(5), 36.660(5), 38.543(3) and 108.37(1) keV nuclear transitions in 221Fr have been essentially improved. Relative intensities of the measured conversion electron lines of these transitions have also been determined.

Abstract

The DANSS project is aimed at creating a relatively compact neutrino spectrometer which does not contain any flammable or other dangerous liquids and may therefore be located very close to the core of an industrial power reactor. As a result, it is expected that high neutrino flux would provide about 15,000 IBD interactions per day in the detector with a sensitive volume of 1 m3. High segmentation of the plastic scintillator will allow to suppress a background down to a ~1% level. Numerous tests performed with a simplified pilot prototype DANSSino under a 3 GWth reactor of the Kalinin NPP have demonstrated operability of the chosen design. The DANSS detector surrounded with a composite shield is movable by means of a special lifting gear, varying the distance to the reactor core in a range from 10 m to 12 m. Due to this feature, it could be used not only for the reactor monitoring, but also for fundamental research including short-range neutrino oscillations to the sterile state. Supposing one-year measurement, the sensitivity to the oscillation parameters is expected to reach a level of sin2(2θnew) ~ 5 × 10−3 with Δ m2 ⊂ (0.02–5.0) eV2.
