In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem of a two-phase flow system consisting of the compressible isothermal Euler equations and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled through the drag force, which can be formally derived from the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck/incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. When the initial data is a small perturbation around an equilibrium state, we prove the global well-posedness of the classical solutions to this system and show the solutions tends to the equilibrium state as time goes to infinity. In order to resolve the main difficulty arising from the pressure term of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, we properly use the Hodge decomposition, spectral analysis, and energy method to obtain the L 2 time decay rates of the solution when the initial perturbation belongs to L 1 space. The optomechanical motion of a gold nanoparticle (GNP) dimer—a pair of optically bound GNPs—in fluid, manipulated by a Bessel beam, is theoretically studied using the multiple multipole (MMP) method. Since a Bessel beam possesses orbital angular momentum (OAM) and spin angular momentum (SAM) simultaneously, complicated rigid-body motions of the dimer can be induced. The mechanism involves the equilibrium between the optical force with the reactive drag force exerted by the fluid. Our results demonstrate that the dimer rotates around its center of mass (COM), while the COM performs an orbital revolution around the optical axis. Additionally, each individual GNP undergoes spinning. The directions of the GNPs' spin and the orbital revolution of COM depend on the handedness and the order (topological charge) of Bessel beam, respectively. Nevertheless, the rotation direction of the dimer depends on the size of GNP. In the case of a smaller dimer, the direction of dimer's rotation with respect to the COM is consistent with the handedness of the light. Conversely, a larger dimer performs a reverse rotation, accompanied by a precession during the orbital revolution. There are multiple turning points in the radius of the GNP for the alternating rotation of the dimer caused by positive or negative optical torque. Satellites in very low Earth orbits can leverage the aerodynamics forces for control purposes. Three-axis attitude control can be achieved by adjusting the orientation of aerodynamic surfaces, benefiting from both drag and lift forces. However, complete control over the orbital motion of a satellite is unattainable using aerodynamic forces alone, as positive thrust cannot be generated. Nonetheless, this limitation does not apply when focusing on the control of a satellite formation. By properly modulating the orientation of panels, positive and negative relative forces can be generated. This paper shows that even in a formation of simple microsatellites, it is possible to achieve formation and attitude simultaneous control by using no other actuators than the aerodynamics surfaces. • Very Low Earth orbits are appealing but the large atmospheric density can be a problem. • The atmospheric forces can be used for control purposes. • Formation control and attitude control can be individually realized by using aerodynamic forces. • A GNC architecture is implemented to realized both goals with the same aerodynamic actuators. • Performance in keeping or acquiring a desired state (attitude and relative position) is promising. Offshore floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems are subjected to significant aerodynamic forces, especially during extreme wind conditions. Accurate estimation of these forces is crucial for the proper design of mooring lines and connection systems. In this study, detailed CFD simulations were performed for various PV panel configurations, and using these CFD simulation correlations were developed to estimate lift and drag forces as a function of the number of panels. These correlations provide valuable tools for designing large-scale FPV systems with multiple PV modules. Additionally, this study investigates the potential of using breakwaters to reduce aerodynamic forces on FPV systems. Breakwaters, typically used to mitigate wave impacts, can also serve as wind barriers, significantly reducing wind forces before they reach the FPV array. Aerodynamic simulations with and without a breakwater were conducted using CFD to assess this effect. The results show a substantial reduction in lift and drag coefficients, especially for angles of attack up to 10 degrees, demonstrating the effectiveness of the breakwater in protecting the FPV system. However, beyond this threshold, the effectiveness of the breakwater of 2 m reduces. These findings highlight the importance of strategic breakwater placement and heights and their role in enhancing FPV system resilience. The insights gained from this study are critical for optimizing breakwater design and placement, ensuring the structural integrity and performance of FPV systems in varying environmental conditions. Featured Application: This study presents a new pullback load calculation model from the perspective of pipe–borehole wall contact. Pipeline pullback load is a crucial basis for drill rig selection and pipeline strength design. This paper presents a new pullback load calculation model from the perspective of pipe–borehole wall contact. The pipe–borehole wall contact analysis includes the distribution of contact pressure and the relationship between the external load and compressive displacement. The friction force between the pipe and the borehole wall was calculated based on the pipe–borehole wall contact analysis and adhesion theory without depending on the empirical friction coefficient. The effects of the eccentricity were also considered when calculating the fluid drag force. Through case studies, we verified the applicability of the model and discussed the possible reasons for the errors between the theoretical and field-measured results. In this paper, an analytical and numerical technique are examined in order to analyse the Stokes flow determination problem due to a viscous sphere droplet moving at a concentric instantaneous position inside a spherical interface separating finite and semi-infinite immiscible fluid phases. Here, when only one of the three phases of the fluid (micropolar fluid) has a microstructure, attention is focused on this case. The motion is considered when Reynolds- and capillary-numbers are low, and the droplet surface and the fluid-fluid interface have insignificant deformation. A general solution is obtained in a spherical coordinate system based on a concentric position to analyse the slow axisymmetric movement of the micropolar fluid, considering microrotation and velocity components. Boundary conditions are initially fulfilled at the fluid-fluid interface and subsequently at the droplet surface. The normalised hydrodynamic drag force applying to a moving viscous droplet appears to be a function of the droplet-to-interface radius ratio, which increases monotonically and becomes unbounded when the droplet surface touches the fluid-fluid interface. The numerical outcomes of the normalised drag force acting on the viscous droplet are derived for different values of the parameters, and are presented in a tabular and graphical framework. Shelterbelts provide essential protection against wind erosion and soil degradation, as well as protection for fruit-bearing plants and crops from strong winds. Enhancing their sheltering capabilities requires optimizing their pattern and orientation, as well as defining their height and desired canopy shape, according to the desired performance. In this work, Large Eddy Simulation is employed to investigate the flow field and windbreak effectiveness of single and double-arranged shelterbelts characterized by different geometry and resistance to the air passage for neutral atmospheric condition. In particular, the canopy of the shelterbelts is modeled as an isotropic porous medium immersed in atmospheric boundary layer flow using the Darcy–Forchheimer model. Results show that a shelterbelt with a rectangular-shaped cross-section and a large canopy height results in the most significant reduction in mean wind speed and TKE, thus providing a large wind-protection region. As the spacing distance of double-arranged shelterbelts increases, the protection zones formed by both shelterbelts are reduced. The systematic comparisons of flow patterns, drag force coefficients, and windbreak effectiveness indicators of a series of single and double-arranged shelterbelts are essential for optimizing the design and management of shelterbelts. The movement of submerged flexible vegetation leads to an increase in resistance to the stream flow. In this study, a formula that can directly calculate the drag force on a highly flexible submerged vegetation, called Ceratophyllum, by using the vegetation swaying characteristics and the flow field information in a steady‐uniform open‐channel flow is derived. The drag force on submerged flexible vegetation is characterized by the time‐averaged flow velocity, turbulence intensity, and the additional force arising from the vegetation swaying. Based on the results of the numerical models in the previous studies (Wang et al., 2022a, 2022b, https://doi.org/10.1017/jfm.2022.598, https://doi.org/10.1017/jfm.2022.899), the drag coefficient is determined. It is revealed that the drag coefficient is influenced by a combination of factors, including the flow conditions, and the distribution and movement characteristics of vegetation. The drag coefficient decreases with an increase in velocity and is approximately linearly related to the cubic power of the bulk flow velocity. In the case of an inter‐plant spacing of 0.5 times the initial plant height, the drag coefficient ranges from 10.72 to 2.11, as the Reynolds number varies from 20,000 to 50,000. Besides, the vegetation distribution density and the relative submergence influence the drag coefficient. In this context, the drag coefficient decreases linearly with an increase in the inter‐plant spacing. For the Reynolds number equaling 50,000, the drag coefficient ranges from 2.11 to 2.02, when the inter‐plant spacing varies from 0.5 to 2 times the plant height, and from 2.47 to 1.79, when the flow depth varies from 1.5 to 3 times the plant height. In this paper, a novel surrogate model for shape-parametrized vehicle drag force prediction is proposed. It is assumed that only a limited dataset of high-fidelity CFD results is available, typically less than ten high-fidelity CFD solutions for different shape samples. The idea is to take advantage not only of the drag coefficients but also physical fields such as velocity, pressure, and kinetic energy evaluated on a cutting plane in the wake of the vehicle and perpendicular to the road. This additional "augmented" information provides a more accurate and robust prediction of the drag force compared to a standard surface response methodology. As a first step, an original reparametrization of the shape based on combination coefficients of shape principal components is proposed, leading to a low-dimensional representation of the shape space. The second step consists in determining principal components of the x-direction momentum flux through a cutting plane behind the car. The final step is to find the mapping between the reduced shape description and the momentum flux formula to achieve an accurate drag estimation. The resulting surrogate model is a space-parameter separated representation with shape principal component coefficients and spatial modes dedicated to drag-force evaluation. The algorithm can deal with shapes of variable mesh by using an optimal transport procedure that interpolates the fields on a shared reference mesh. The Machine Learning algorithm is challenged on a car concept with a three-dimensional shape design space. With only two well-chosen samples, the numerical algorithm is able to return a drag surrogate model with reasonable uniform error over the validation dataset. An incremental learning approach involving additional high-fidelity computations is also proposed. The leading algorithm is shown to improve the model accuracy. The study also shows the sensitivity of the results with respect to the initial experimental design. Particle–particle and particle–gas processes significantly impact planetary precursors such as dust aggregates and planetesimals. We investigate gas permeability (⁠|$\kappa$|⁠) in 12 granular samples, mimicking planetesimal dust regoliths. Using parabolic flights, this study assesses how gravitational compression – and lack thereof – influences gas permeation, impacting the equilibrium state of low-gravity objects. Transitioning between micro- and hyper-gravity induces granular sedimentation dynamics, revealing collective dust–grain aerodynamics. Our experiments measure |$\kappa$| across Knudsen number (Kn) ranges, reflecting transitional flow. Using mass and momentum conservation, we derive |$\kappa$| and calculate pressure gradients within the granular matrix. Key findings: (i) As confinement pressure increases with gravitational load and mass flow, |$\kappa$| and average pore space decrease. This implies that a planetesimal's unique dust-compaction history limits subsurface volatile outflows. (ii) The derived pressure gradient enables tensile strength determination for asteroid regolith simulants with cohesion. This offers a unique approach to studying dust-layer properties when suspended in confinement pressures comparable to the equilibrium state on planetesimals surfaces, which will be valuable for modelling their collisional evolution. (iii) We observe a dynamical flow symmetry breaking when granular material moves against the pressure gradient. This occurs even at low Reynolds numbers, suggesting that Stokes numbers for drifting dust aggregates near the Stokes–Epstein transition require a drag force modification based on permeability. Motion of a projectile in the absence of any resistive medium is quite ideal and has an exact analytical solution in classical mechanics. Ordinarily, projectiles move in a resistive medium which modify the acceleration of the body both in the horizontal and vertical directions. So far, the time of flight and the range arising from the solution of the classical problem due to the presence of a linear velocity‐dependent resistive force are not exact and can only be determined numerically. In this work, we attempt to solve the problem analytically. We resolve the underlying difficulty in the analytical problem by deriving an analytical function which guides the dynamics of the projectile and by calculating iteratively the falling time as a function of the maximum height reached. We show that the effect of the viscous drag force in the time of flight of the projectile may lead to time asymmetry in the upward and downward motion, reduced maximum height reached, time of flight, and range for any initial launching speed. The downward motion is established to take more time than the upward motion. We obtain excellent agreement between the calculated values and the computed trajectories. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a novel centrifugal microfluidic approach (so-called lab-on-a-CD) for magnetic circulating tumor cell (CTC) separation from the other healthy cells according to their physical and acquired chemical properties. This study enhances the efficiency of CTC isolation, crucial for cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy. CTCs are cells that break away from primary tumors and travel through the bloodstream; however, isolating CTCs from blood cells is difficult due to their low numbers and diverse characteristics. The proposed microfluidic device consists of two sections: a passive section that uses inertial force and bifurcation law to sort CTCs into different streamlines based on size and shape and an active section that uses magnetic forces along with Dean drag, inertial, and centrifugal forces to capture magnetized CTCs at the downstream of the microchannel. The authors designed, simulated, fabricated, and tested the device with cultured cancer cells and human cells. We also proposed a cost-effective method to mitigate the surface roughness and smooth surfaces created by micromachines and a unique pulsatile technique for flow control to improve separation efficiency. The possibility of a device with fewer layers to improve the leaks and alignment concerns was also demonstrated. The fabricated device could quickly handle a large volume of samples and achieve a high separation efficiency (93%) of CTCs at an optimal angular velocity. The paper shows the feasibility and potential of the proposed centrifugal microfluidic approach to satisfy the pumping, cell sorting, and separating functions for CTC separation. Recently, researchers are facing great challenges to form the homogeneous solutions of various liquids at biomedical and industrial levels. Such homogeneous solutions can be controlled through stratification phenomenon directly which is ignored by the researchers in the existing literature specifically quadratic stratification and melting heat mechanism which is valid only for higher temperature processes. Thus, to form the homogeneous and stable liquid solutions for various industrial processes, we investigate the melting heat phenomenon in quadratic stratified Jeffery Nano fluid flow deformed due to linearly stretching sheet along with stagnation point. Inclined constant magnetic field is implemented on the fluid through an arbitrary angel. Characteristics of heat and transportations are disclosed through viscous dissipation, Brownian motion and thermphoresis. Temperature and concentration of the surrounding fluids are assumed higher than the stretching surface. The resultant governing equations are reduced to ordinary differential equations through proper transformations. Convergent analytical series solutions are computed via homotopic approach. Impact of various emerging parameters on temperature, velocity and concentration fields are illustrated and discussed comprehensively. Sherwood and Nusselt numbers and drag force are scrutinized mathematically, physically and graphically. It is analyzed from the study that (i) dominant melting reduces the temperature field (ii) higher thermal and solutal stratification decay the temperature and concentration fields respectively (iii) higher thermophoresis enhances the temperature field. Further, it is concluded that stable and homogeneous solutions may be made by increasing melting and reducing stratification phenomena. In this paper, a forced vibration caused by drag and lift forces with time‐varying mass is studied. The construction of the model is conducted by adding impact force to the previous model. The periodicity of the solution is yet known. Hence, the model is seen as a perturbation problem. The drag force exerted on a body moving in a fluid is empirically known to follow a linear drag law at low Reynolds numbers and a quadratic drag law at very high Reynolds numbers. The major challenge with the empirical description of the drag lies in the uncertainty of the description of the drag coefficient as a function of velocity. If the function is precisely known, it may be possible to find a general formula for the drag, which would, in principle, be applicable for all Reynolds numbers. The general law can consequently be tested using the linear and quadratic drag laws within their validity regimes to confirm its reliability and validity. The current absence of such a general law implies that the prediction of the dynamics of a body moving under drag forces in the intermediate regime of the Reynolds number can only be approximate and inaccurate since it is not guided by any valid law. In this study, we derive a general relation for the drag force, which may be applicable in all the Reynolds number regimes. We achieve this through a simple transformation of Newton's second equation for uniformly decelerated motion. It turns out that our general relation is a modification of the linear drag law. Understanding particle ejection behaviours in plume-regolith interaction is important for a safe soft-landing system and landing manoeuvre in planetary missions. In this study, a Mach 5.8 hypersonic jet at the different Reynolds numbers of 2.58 × 104 and 9.35 × 102 impinges on the deposited glass particles of 80 μm diameter in a vacuum chamber, and the particle and gas motions at the nozzle pressure ratios (NPR) of 95, 950, and 1900 are investigated using the time-resolved PIV and high-speed Schlieren techniques. A narrow hypersonic jet consisting of several shock cells forms at the lower NPR of 95 and causes a deeply narrow crater due to its jet penetration into the deposited particles. The deeply narrow crater makes a particle ejection angle increase upwardly. On the other hand, a relatively wide crater forms due to the jet impingement at the other NPR conditions which a widely long shock cell is generated. Based on the present experimental results, a dominant factor in particle ejection angle is the crater size and depth, whereas a particle diffusion velocity is dominated by surrounding pressure. Understanding the effect of airfoil geometry on the criticality of leading-edge suction is key to modeling the leading-edge vortex (LEV) dynamics of unsteady airfoils in a simple and robust manner. The current work aimed at investigating the dependency of the leading-edge suction parameter (LESP), a nondimensional measure of the leading-edge suction, at its critical value, which is indicative of leading-edge vortex initiation, on airfoil camber. Computational data for six NACA XX12 series airfoils with varying camber magnitude and maximum camber location at Reynolds numbers 30,000 and 3 million were analyzed. Observations indicate that increasing the airfoil camber leads to delayed LEV initiation and suction breakdown due to higher leading-edge flow curvature. The rate of increase of critical LESP with camber was seen to be independent of Reynolds number. Aftward movement of the maximum camber location was seen to have a reducing effect on the airfoil's forces and LEV dynamics. Lift and drag forces were observed to be dependent on camber magnitude and location prior to LEV formation but independent during the LEV-dominated part of the motion. This study analyzes the influence of nine distinct texture geometries on a convergent oil film gap using a simulation model. The geometrical dimensions of the textures are characterized by the texture area density, S t e x. , A and the ratio of the textured-to-untextured area ( A t e x. / A 0) . The results show that different texture geometries optimize the tribological performance depending on the value of S t e x. , A . Rectangular textures with variable widths (85% of the texture length a t e x. ) significantly enhance lifting and the drag force across a broad range of S t e x. , A . Furthermore, rectangular textures with a constant width (85% of the global width b 0 ) show the best improvement within this study. This investigation explores the interactions of different shaped debris with an array of obstacles under subcritical flow conditions, representative of a flood associated with a storm surge or tsunami. Panels, blocks and cylinders were used in a flow channel, as analogues for house panels, cars/containers and trees respectively, whilst some tests used a mix of debris. The backwater effect due to the blockage caused by the obstacles was most (least) significant for panels (cylinders). There was some evidence that smaller key log types and higher flow rates led to smaller dams. It was also evident that key logs formed at different depths depending on debris shape; debris shape also determined the vertical shape of the dam. Capture efficiency had a broadly negative (positive) correlation with the Froude number (permeability). Also, from video footage there were examples of the debris moving more quickly through partial dams. Finally, the drag force, deduced from only the water depths and the flow discharge, showed a clear relationship between drag force and Froude number, and a dependency of drag force on debris shape. Effects of Sn on microstructure, texture and magnetic properties of 2.7%Si-0.5%Al non-oriented silicon steel in industrial production were studied by X-ray diffraction and electron backscattering diffraction. Furthermore, combining first-principles simulation with White–Coghlan model calculation, grain boundary segregation of Sn was also investigated. In Sn-0.05 steel, cold-rolled sheet showed more ingrain shear bands and intensity of textures weakened significantly. Addition of Sn obviously reduced intensity of {111}<112> and increased intensity of {114}<481>; strong {100}<120> and nearly Goss textures appeared in annealed sheet. P1.5/50 decreased by 0.05W/kg, B50 increased by 0.005 T, and stability of magnetic properties were obviously improved of Sn-0.05. In the unit grain boundary layer (1 Å−2), the excess solute concentration on the grain boundary layer of Sn corresponding to 20,000–30,000 appm was 0.16–0.22 and gradually decreased with temperature and increased with intragranular solute content. As a segregation element, during annealing process of hot-rolled band and cold-rolled sheet, Sn exerted a drag force on the grain boundaries, thus inhibiting the grain growth. {114}<481> and {100}<120> oriented grains could grow selectively and distribute evenly by virtue of their mobility and quantity advantage higher than {111}<112>, thus improving magnetic properties and stability of 2.7%Si-0.5%Al non-oriented silicon steel. This article presents research into the feasibility of applying a nonlinear damper of a new conceptual structure. The key component of the damper is a circular membrane with slits that can move in a cylinder filled with viscous fluid. When an external load is applied to the damper, the membrane deforms, opening the slits. The flow of viscous fluid through the slits generates a damping force. The phenomenological model of the damper is based on the notion that the slit membrane moves according to the fundamental axisymmetric vibration mode of a circular membrane. The slit membrane blocks the entire radius of the pipe in the state of equilibrium when all slits are closed. As the membrane moves, the opening area of the slits varies depending on its deformation. This gives a nonlinear damping characteristic. The damping constant depends on the input displacement and velocity, which is the reason for the nonlinearity of the damping characteristic. From the phenomenological model, the nonlinear characteristic of the drag force is obtained. The performance of the damper is simulated using a mass–spring–damper system. Two cases of harmonic excitation and impulse excitation are analyzed. The results show that, using the slit membrane damper, the suppression of dynamic loads is more effective compared to a conventional linear damper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, a two-phase flow numerical wave tank model based on the viscous flow theory was applied to conduct computational research on the interaction between waves and submerged horizontal cylinders. The research objective is to reveal the hydrodynamic characteristics of nonlinear loads on submerged horizontal cylinders with a focus on vortex effects. The influence of the sharp and round corners of cross-sections on the wave forces on cylinders was summarized. The reasons for the characteristics of the wave forces were explained by analyzing the flow field distribution around the cylinder and decomposing the wave forces into inertial and drag forces. This study found that under the various incident wave amplitudes, the section corner and aspect ratio have significant impacts on each frequency component of the horizontal and vertical wave forces. The distribution of the vorticity field shows that the vortex effects lead to the differences between the loads on the cylinder under different cross-sectional corners and aspect ratios. The characteristics of inertial forces and drag forces on the cylinders were given by comparing and analyzing the cases with different sectional sharp and round corners. The inertia and drag coefficients were obtained by solving Morison's equation. Under various Kc and Re numbers, the maximum values of the inertia and drag coefficients obtained are significantly different from those for submerged cylinders under oscillatory flow action. Anchor damage is one of the main risk factors for the safe operation of submarine cables. Additionally, due to a scour effect induced by seabed currents, submarine cables are prone to exposure or even suspension, increasing the risk of being dragged by anchors. Therefore, it is necessary to study the global response of exposed and suspended submarine cables subjected to anchor dragging. In this study, the tensile and bending stiffnesses of submarine cables are calculated by theoretical methods, and the accuracy of these calculations is verified by establishing a detailed finite element model. Then, the mechanical properties of the submarine cables are equivalently modeled using beam elements, and a large-scale finite element model for exposed and suspended cables under anchor dragging is established. Considering different dragging forces, exposed lengths, spanning lengths, and spanning heights, the overall deformation and mechanical responses of exposed and suspended cables are analyzed separately. The results show that under dragging forces, axial forces are uniformly distributed along exposed and suspended segments, while bending moments concentrate at the central hooking area and the ends of exposed and suspended segments. The influence of dragging force, exposed length, spanning length, and spanning height on the stress and deformation of submarine cables is significant. A numerical investigation was conducted in this study utilizing Force Element Analysis to explore the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) mechanism of side-by-side dual cylinders under the conditions of Reynolds number Re = 100, mass ratio m* = 10, and spacing ratios L/D ranging from 3 to 6. The hydrodynamic forces by force element formulas were incorporated into the vibration response calculations of elastically supported rigid cylinders using a User-Defined Function (UDF) and the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method. A comprehensive analysis was performed to elucidate the combined effects of the spacing ratio L/D and reduced velocity Ur on the vibration responses, quantifying the hydrodynamic forces involved in the mutual interaction during VIV for side-by-side dual cylinders. The influence mechanisms of inter-cylinder interaction and their effects on the resultant hydrodynamic phenomena were discussed. It was revealed that for side-by-side arranged dual cylinders outside the "lock-in region", the lift and drag forces are predominantly supplied by the volume vorticity forces in conjunction with surface vortices (including frictional) forces. However, within the "lock-in region", the surface acceleration lift forces provide greater force contributions, and the volume vorticity lift force contributes significantly to negative values. Notably, alterations to the spacing ratio do not change the proportion of force element components. The amplitudes of the cylinders' mutual interaction forces are identical in magnitude but opposite in phase. In this study, we examine the movement of two hard spheres aligned in a straight line within an incompressible couple stress fluid under the impact of the magnetic field. Both objects have distinct shapes and move along an axis connecting their centers with varying velocities. As a first step, an incompressible analytical analysis is performed on a fluid with couple stress properties around an axially symmetric particle. Using the superposition principle, a general solution is developed for couple stress fluid flows over two moving objects. In order to achieve the boundary conditions, the boundary collocation strategy is applied to the surfaces of the two spheres. A set of tables and graphs illustrates numerical estimates of the dimensionless drag forces acting on two spherical objects. In addition, a drop in Hartmann number or an increase in couple stress viscosity will increase the dimensionless drag force on each spherical particle.

This paper presents an analytical method to describe the shape of an airplane wing. The analytical shape of the wing section implies analytical expressions for the wing parameters: maximum thickness, maximum camber, maximum camber position, minimum thickness position, and so on. The analytical expressions of the wings in a first representation allow simple relationships with the geometric parameters of the wing. The defined expressions for the wings parameters relevant for aircraft design are versatile.

A well-designed spray system, which is located near the source of high-temperature smoke, can improve the capture efficiency of traditional local exhaust ventilation (LEV). However, there is currently no comprehensive evaluation index that clearly reflects the performance of spray-local exhaust ventilation (SLEV), making it challenging to optimize the spray arrangement. The two-phase flow fields in the SLEV and LEV were compared to evaluate the impact of spray on smoke control. The effects of spray arrangement parameters, such as spray position, spacing, initial droplet size, and angle, on the performance of the SLEV system were further evaluated using current evaluation indicators. Based on this, we developed a comprehensive evaluation model for SLEV using the AHP-entropy combination weighting method. The results revealed that the decrease in smoke control with an increase in rolling speed is primarily caused by a reduction in spray control in the central region of the smoke. When the spray flow rate is 0.0028 kg/s and the velocity is 30 m/s, the primary factor that improves ventilation performance is the downward drag force exerted by the spray on smoke, rather than the cooling effect. The comprehensive model was developed using weights of 0.45, 0.34, and 0.21 for the three evaluation indicators: capture efficiency, high-quality concentration field ratio, and spatial droplet size. The model showed good reliability based on the results of the smoke concentration analysis. The results of this study are expected to guide the design, implementation, and evaluation of SLEV systems. [Display omitted] Hypothesis: Synthetic micro/nanomotors are gaining extensive attention for various biomedical applications (especially in drug delivery) due to their ability to mimic the motion of biological micro/nanoscale swimmers. The feasibility of these applications relies on tight control of propulsion speed, direction, and type of motion (translation, circular, etc.) along with the exerted self-propulsive force. We propose to exploit the variation of both self-propulsion speed and force of active colloids with different patch coverages (with and without supporting layer) for engineering diffusiophoretic micro/nanomotors. Experiments: The microswimmers were designed at various patch coverages (10°, 30°, and 90°) with (Ti/Pt) and without (Pt) an adhesion layer for the catalytic patch through glancing angle metal deposition (GLAD) technique. Mean-square displacement (MSD) analysis was performed to obtain the self-propulsion parameters like speed and angular speed. Using optical tweezers (OT), the self-propulsive force was measured from the force power spectral density. Findings: The findings of our experiments suggest the non-requirement of any adhesion layer preceding the catalyst deposition since the Pt 10° colloidal batch had the maximal self-propulsion speed (4.61 ± 0.3 μ m / s) and force (345 ± 57 f N) for 5% w/v H 2 O 2 fuel concentration. Moreover, the self-propulsion speed and force decreased with increasing patch size, contrary to theoretical estimates. Also, the self-propulsive force obtained from MSD is 2 to 4 times lower in magnitude than the OT based force values. We believe that the self-propelling motion of the micromotors is possibly hindered due to interactions with the surface of the quartz cuvette during the optical microscopic analysis. Further, the MSD is limited to the self-propulsive motion in two dimensions. On the other hand, OT based force measurement involve trapping the particles in the bulk of the solution entirely avoiding the particle–substrate interactions. Hence, OT based force measurements are better than the propulsion velocity based stokes drag force estimates. With Reynolds number (Re) fixed at 200, numerical simulations explore the influence of varying gap ratios (G) ranging from 0 to 10 times the cylinder size. Emphasis is placed on understanding the impact of cylinders spacing on flow structure mechanisms and induced forces. Investigation of fluid flow parameters includes vorticity behavior, pressure streamlines, and variations in drag and lift coefficients alongside the Strouhal number under different values of G. From the results, four distinct flow patterns emerge: single bluff body flow, flip flopping flow, modulated synchronized flow, and synchronized flow, each exhibiting unique characteristics. This study reveals the strong dependence of fluid forces on G, with low spacing values leading to complex vortex structures and fluctuating forces influenced by jet flow effects. At higher spacing values, proximity effects between cylinders diminish, resulting in a smoother periodic flow. The Strouhal number, average drag force and the rms values of drag and lift force coefficients vary abruptly at narrow gaps and become smooth at higher gap ratios. Unlike the tandem and side-by-side arrangements the staggered cylinders arrangement is found to have significant impact on the pressure variations around both cylinders. Overall, this research could contribute to a comprehensive understanding of staggered cylinder arrangements and their implications for engineering applications.

In this paper, we present a refined framework for the global-in-time well-posedness theory for the pressureless Euler–Navier–Stokes system and the optimal temporal decay rates of certain norms of solutions. Here the coupling of two systems, pressureless Euler system and incompressible Navier–Stoke system, is through the drag force. We construct the global-in-time existence and uniqueness of regular solutions for the pressureless Euler–Navier–Stokes system without using a priori large time behavior estimates. Moreover, we seek for the optimal Sobolev regularity for the solutions. Concerning the temporal decay for solutions, we show that the fluid velocities exhibit the same decay rate as that of the heat equations. In particular, our result provides that the temporal decay rate of difference between two velocities, which is faster than the fluid velocities themselves, is at least the same as the second-order derivatives of fluid velocities. The significant increase in thermal efficiency and the rate of energy exchange used in fuel dynamics and automobile coolants are leading to a better understanding of nanofluids. This computational analysis explores the thermal conductivity performance for radiative cross-flow of a nanofluid across an expanding/constricting sheet with a suction effect as a result of its application. To compute or calculate the magnificent point of nanofluid flow, the entropy, and asymmetrical heat source/sink effects are also elicited. The boundary layers traverse a stream-wise procedure for expanding and contracting sheets. Additionally, the study examines the features of heat transfer and cross-flow of nanofluids using numerical simulations. By employing similarity variables, the basic PDE equations of the current model are transformed into ODEs, and they are subsequently evaluated using the bvp4c method. Therefore, the effects of embedded flow variables on drag force, heat transfer rate, and entropy generation profiles have been framed using parametric research. Multiple solutions are offered for a specific range of the contracting parameter as well as the mass suction parameter. In addition, the heat transfer rate accelerates due to the heat source and decelerates due to the heat sink. This study provides a numerical investigation about J‐shaped straight‐bladed Darrieus vertical axis wind turbines equipped with outboard, inboard, and two‐sided Gurney flap (GF). The performance of the turbines is examined for different GF heights and tip speed ratios (TSRs). The aerodynamic analysis is carried out using power curves, vorticity field, and pressure field surrounding the wind turbine. The results indicate that employing the inboard GF effectively enhances the turbine's performance by harnessing the drag force in the desired direction and postponing the flow separation up to 14° of azimuth angle. The inboard GF with a height of 0.75% chord length exhibits the best performance among the GFs, showing an increase in output power at higher TSRs up to 12.35%. The flow structure around limited-size vegetation patches is crucial for understanding sediment transport and vegetation succession trends. While the influence of vegetation density has been extensively explored, the impact of the relative diameter of vegetation stems remains relatively unclear. After validating the reliability of the numerical model with experimental data, this study conducted 2D-URANS simulations (SST k-ω) to investigate the impact of varying relative diameters d/D under different vegetation densities λ on the hydrodynamic characteristics and drag force of vegetation patches. The results show that increasing d/D and decreasing λ are equivalent, both contributing to increased spacing between cylinder elements, allowing for the formation of element-scale Kármán vortices. Compared to vegetation density λ, the non-dimensional frontal area aD is a better predictor for the presence of array-scale Kármán vortex streets. Within the parameter range covered in this study, array-scale Kármán vortex streets appear when aD ≥ 1.4, which will significantly alter sediment transport patterns. For the same vegetation density, increasing the relative diameter d/D leads to a decrease in the array drag coefficient C ¯ D and an increase in the average element drag coefficient C ¯ d . When parameterizing vegetation resistance using aD, all data points collapse onto a single curve, following the relationships C ¯ D = 0.34 ln a D + 0.78 and C ¯ d = − 0.42 ln a D + 0.82 . Distributed plates have been proven effective in controlling the vortex shedding and reducing the drag force of a circular cylinder, but more studies on its effect on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) are needed. This paper presents a systematic study of the effect of distributed cross-plates on the suppression of the VIV of a flexible cylinder using wind tunnel experiments. The experiments are performed by changing the length (l), width (w), and number (N) of the cross-plates, the spacing (S) between the adjacent cross-plates, and the aspect ratio (λ) of the flexible cylinder. The flexible cylinder is allowed to vibrate in the transverse direction for a reduced velocity range of 3.0–9.5, corresponding to a Reynolds number of 10,000–49,000. The results show that the optimal configuration of the distributed cross-plates for suppressing VIV is (l / D, w / D, S / D) = (2.0, 0.5, 4), where D is the cylinder diameter. The maximum amplitude decreases monotonically with increasing length and width, respectively. The optimal spacing is independent of λ of the flexible cylinder. For the optimal configuration, the vibration can be fully suppressed in many cases, and the minimum reduction of the maximum amplitude is 14% depending on N and λ, demonstrating a potential application of the distributed cross-plates. This investigation studied numerically the aerodynamical effects of different modifications in a model of a common sedan. Four car modifications as spoiler, wing profile spoiler, standard diffuser and curved diffuser and their combinations were reported. Using a three-dimensional sedan model created with Computer-Aided Design software, the modifications are applied and assessed their influence on aerodynamics at speeds ranging from 60 to 120 km/h. The spoiler, wing spoiler, standard diffuser and curved diffuser reducing the lift forces experienced by the vehicle. Three cases, spoiler, wing spoiler, and curved diffuser increase the drag forces Combining a curved diffuser and a spoiler significantly decreases lift forces by an average of 77.8%, albeit with a 15.3% increase in drag forces, by 120 km/h The synergy of a curved diffuser and a wing spoiler achieves a substantial 63.3% reduction of net vertical forces, with only a 7.9% increase in drag forces, by 120 km/h, offering improved control with lesser energy consumption in comparison to other combinations. Results show that modifications, greatly influence airflow interaction, with effects varying by speed. A comprehensive study of the nature of micropolar fluid on an unsteady MHD-free convective transference through a perforated sheet is discussed considering the suction and Lorentz's force effects. The corresponding similarity equations of temperature, momentum, concentration, and angular momentum equations have been modified into the non-dimensional similarity equations of the temperature, momentum, concentration, and angular momentum equations by utilizing the similarity technique. The modified equations have been resolved by exerting the shooting technique with the help of the finite difference method (FDM) through MATLAB. The fluid flow is inversely proportional to the changes in micro rotational effect (Δ). The concentration boundary layer gets thinner as the Schmidt number (Sc) advances and hence the concentration of the fluid decreases. Micropolar fluid helps reduce drag forces and also acts as a coolant. The heat transmission rate advances by around 391%, and 110% due to growing amounts of Pr from 0.71 to 7.0, and v 0 from 0.6 to 3.0, respectively. Rare-earth mud and manganese nodules coexist on the seafloor around Minamitorishima Island. To investigate the feasibility of a pulp-lift system that can ensure economic efficiency by pumping manganese using rare-earth mud as the working fluid, we conducted pulp-lift experiments at a head of 5.0 m using a squeeze pump for mortar pumping. In the study, we used carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) as the working fluid, which is a pseudo-plastic fluid like deep muddy seawater. We investigated the effects of the viscosity of the working fluid and the pump pulsation characteristics on lifting. The results revealed that the drag force acting on the pumped ore increased as the fluid became more viscous and the pulsation period became higher, while the reverse flow rate increased due to the negative pulsation pressure. As part of the strategy to achieve net-zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in international maritime shipping, there is ongoing exploration into the use of wind propulsion systems as auxiliary ship propulsion devices. When considering a rigid sail as the wind propulsion system, evaluating the performance of a single sail is relatively simple. However, assessing the performance of multiple sails is more challenging due to the interference between the sails and between the sails and the hull. In this study, the thrust characteristics of two rigid sails attached to a ship are investigated by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This includes considering the interference effects between the sails themselves and between the sails and the hull. The research reveals the innovative optimized angle of attack for maximizing thrust under tailwind conditions. At 150° in relative wind direction, the best performance is achieved with a low angle of attack on the fore side sail and a high angle of attack on the aft side sail. At 180° in relative wind direction, a high angle of attack on the fore side sail and a low angle of attack on the aft side sail yield the best results. Here, a "low" angle of attack means that the lift force is greater than the drag force, while a "high" angle of attack means the drag force is greater than the lift force. In this study, the force in the ship's forward direction is only focused on optimizing the angles of attack of the two sails. However, the side forces caused by the sails are also significant for the ship's sailing conditions. Therefore, future work will involve optimizing the angles of attack under drifting conditions. An event-triggered neural adaptive cooperative control is proposed for the towing system (TS) with model parameter uncertainties and unknown disturbances. Different from ordinary multi-vessel formation control, the tugs and unactuated offshore platform in the TS are connected together by towlines, and the resultant tension of the towlines serves as the actual drag force for the platform. Initially, based on the radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), an adaptive RBFNN is designed to compensate unknown disturbances and model parameter uncertainties of the TS, and we use minimal learning parameter (MLP) algorithm to reduce the online learning parameters of adaptive RBFNN. Combined with dynamic surface technology and event-triggered control (ETC) mechanism, an event-triggered neural adaptive virtual controller is designed to obtain the desired drag force of the platform. According to the quadratic programming algorithm, the desired drag force is allocated as the desired tensions of towlines. Subsequently, the desired towline length and the desired position information of the tugs are obtained sequentially through the towline model and the position relationship between the tugs and the platform. Then, according to the desired positions of tugs, an event-triggered neural adaptive distributed cooperative controller is designed for achieving the multi-tug towing of the offshore platform. The ETC mechanism is introduced to reduce the communication burden within the TS and the execution frequency of the tugs' thrusters. Finally, the stability of the closed-loop system is proven using the Lyapunov theory, and the ETC mechanism proves that no Zeno behavior occurs. The present study uses results of eddy‐resolving numerical simulations to investigate the open channel flow over large clusters of freshwater mussels (Unio elongatulus) partially buried in a rough, gravel bed. The density of the mussels forming the array varies from 26 to 500 mussels/m2. The flow structure is analyzed at large distances from the leading edge of the mussel bed, where the flow can be considered fully developed. The effects of changing the mussel bed density, the filtering discharge, the burial level and the roughness of the bed surface in which mussels are burrowed, are investigated in terms of flow field, turbulent structures, drag forces, and bed shear stresses. It is found that strong interactions occur between energetic eddies generated by the larger gravels on the exposed bed surface and by the mussel shells. Simulations results show that for a burial depth close to 50% and a ratio between the average gravel size and the mussel protruding height of 0.13, the shell induced turbulence becomes dominant for mussel bed densities around 50 mussels/m2. The influence of the bed roughness becomes less relevant with increasing mussel density, as the generation of energetic eddies is mostly controlled by mussel‐to‐mussel interactions. For fixed bed roughness, burial level and filtering velocity, the mean streamwise drag force and the associated drag coefficient for the exposed part of each mussel decrease with increasing mussel density, even if strong variations are observed for individual mussels. For constant mussel bed density and burial level, the mean streamwise drag force and the mean drag coefficient decrease slightly with increasing bed roughness. Increasing the burial level decreases not only the drag forces but also the drag coefficients because of the more streamlined shape of the top of the mussels. Strong active filtering acts toward decreasing the mean streamwise force and the mean drag coefficient. The spanwise drag forces contribute significantly to the total drag force, especially for high mussel bed densities. Based on smooth bed calculations, bed‐averaged shear stresses are reduced in highly dense clusters. The present paper develops a new framework to predict the mean flow through an array of cylinders in which the flow around the array (array‐scale) and the flow around individual cylinders (element‐scale) are modeled separately using actuator disc theory and empirical drag models respectively, and then coupled through the net drag force. Applying this framework only requires knowledge of the array geometry and incident flow. The framework is validated using high‐fidelity direct numerical simulations for arrays of between 7 and 109 cylinders having different arrangements (staggered, concentric, random) and bounding shapes (circular, square) in both two‐ and three‐dimensional flows. In general, the framework outperforms existing models which require calibration and are only valid for part of the practical parameter space. The demonstrated scale separation suggests different combinations of element‐scale and array‐scale models/theories may be used for other arrangements of bluff bodies. However, a general predictive tool for mean flow is currently lacking. To develop this predictive capacity, this study uses the idea of scale separation to integrate models from different research fields, including the actuator disc theory originally developed for design of turbines and propellers, and element‐scale drag models initially proposed for aquatic vegetated flows, to develop a unifying, predictive, analytical framework to estimate the mean flow. The framework is validated using high‐fidelity direct numerical simulations of arrays of cylinders with different arrangements (staggered, concentric, random) and array shapes (square, circular). With only knowledge of the array geometry and incident flow, the framework predicts the mean flow exceptionally well across a wide range of practical flow conditions. This leads to a step‐change in our ability to predict the fraction of incoming flow passing through a porous array, hydrodynamic load on offshore structures, and sediment flux within aquatic vegetation systems when combined with bed load transport models. The framework could be an important guide for coastal and riverine restoration projects using aquatic vegetation and the design of offshore structures and turbine farms. Controlling microrobot locomotion in vessels and capillaries is crucial for precise drug delivery and minimally invasive surgeries. However, this is challenging due to the complex interactions with red blood cells (RBCs) and the difficulty navigating within the dense environment. Here, we construct a numerical framework to evaluate the relative resistance coefficient ( C r * ) of a microrobot propelled through RBC suspensions. Our experiments validate the numerical results. We find that C r * increases for smaller microrobots and higher hematocrit levels, while magnetic force strength weakly impacts C r * . C r * is smaller than the resistance coefficient of a macroscale robot estimated from the apparent viscosity of the RBC suspension. The aspect ratio of a prolate ellipsoidal microrobot influences C r * along its long-axis direction. Additionally, machine learning accurately predicts C r * . Understanding the dynamic response of trees to a strong wind is crucial to alleviating the damages and losses of tree forests caused by windstorms. Previous studies have elucidated small deformations of a broad range of tree species, yet mathematical models that can accurately pinpoint the location and severity of wind-induced damages are still lacking. To bridge this gap, the present work puts forward the first geometrically accurate, physics-based model to capture large deformation of trees induced by a strong wind. The proposed model incorporates a branched tree architecture to represent the topology of a realistic tree. The large, dynamic deformation of the trunk and branches of the tree is described by a system of nonlinear partial differential equations derived from structural theories rooted in classical mechanics. The aerodynamic loading is quantified based on the instantaneous relative velocity between the wind and the tree. The proposed model could successfully reproduce the effects of aerodynamic damping by capturing the nonlinear interplays between the wind and the tree, in contrast to prior analytical models that relied on empirical assumptions of the damping coefficients. The model further reveals a reduction in the drag force due to wind-induced shape reconfiguration, which is enhanced exponentially as a function of the wind speed. This study investigates pressure gradient dynamics within a porous medium in the context of two-phase fluid flow, specifically water and sand particle interactions. Using experimental data, we refine pressure correction coefficients within a numerical solution framework, employing the Semi-Implicit Method for the Pressure-linked Equations algorithm. Our findings highlight the relative nature of pressure gradient phenomena, with particle size and volume fraction emerging as crucial determinants. Graphical representations reveal a clear trend: an increase in volume fraction, up to 40%, across varying Reynolds Numbers, leads to a transition towards non-Newtonian behavior in the two-phase fluid system. Unlike the linear pressure gradient seen in single-phase fluid flow, the interplay between liquid and solid phases, along with drag forces, imparts a distinctly nonlinear trajectory to the pressure gradient in two-phase fluid flow scenarios. As the two-phase flow enters a porous medium, numerous factors come into play, resulting in a pressure drop. These factors include changes in cross-sectional geometry, alterations in boundary layer dynamics, and ensuing momentum fluctuations. Water–air trans-media unmanned vehicle is a kind of aircraft, which can freely fly in the air, sail in the water and pass through free surface. For trans-media aircrafts, the development process from air–surface to air–underwater and from submarine-launched drive to autonomous drive is investigated. By analyzing the characteristic of manta ray, flying fish and existing aircraft, this paper proposes a new water–air trans-media unmanned vehicle with flat dish-airfoil-shaped main body and telescopic NACA-type wing. Then the numerical method to calculate the lift and drag forces is established and validated by the results of classic NACA cases. On this basis, the flow field around the new vehicle is numerically simulated, and its lift–drag performances in different media (air and water) and ground effect are analyzed, comparing it with a model inspired by the Blackwing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The findings illustrate the superior performance of the new vehicle in terms of lift and drag forces, offering an innovative design framework for water–air trans-media UAV applications. Addressing the challenges for detecting underwater damage to the structures with pile foundation, this study presents the design of an adsorption-operated robotic system. Initially, a prototype is proposed for an adsorption-operated robot that is equipped with an automatic movement mechanism. To account for the disturbance of the drag force in the control system, a hydrodynamic numerical model for the detection robot is established. The numerical results of the drag force are then integrated into the control system, leading to the design of a force-redeemed active disturbance rejection controller. Furthermore, a novel detection algorithm based on the image segmentation network UNet is developed for the automatic identification of damages. The performance of the controller and detection algorithm is evaluated against traditional methods. The results indicate that the proposed force-redeemed active disturbance rejection controller outperforms traditional PID and ADR controllers in terms of overshoot and adjustment time. Moreover, the developed detection algorithm exhibits superior performance in precision, F1 score, and mean intersection over union compared to the traditional algorithms of FCN, PSPnet, Deeplabv3, and UNet.
