Radiometric calibration of space-based elastic backscatter lidars is accomplished by comparing the measured backscatter signals to theoretically expected signals computed for some well-characterized calibration target. For any given system and wavelength, the choice of calibration target is dictated by several considerations, including signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and target availability. This paper describes the newly implemented procedures used to calibrate the 1064 nm measurements acquired by CALIOP (i.e., the Cloud Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization), the two-wavelength (532 nm and 1064 nm) elastic backscatter lidar currently flying on the Cloud Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) mission. CALIOP’s 532 nm channel is accurately calibrated by normalizing the molecular backscatter from the uppermost aerosol-free altitudes of the CALIOP measurement region to molecular model data obtained from NASA’s Global Modeling and Assimilation Office. However, because CALIOP’s SNR for molecular backscatter measurements is prohibitively lower at 1064 nm than at 532 nm, the direct high altitude molecular normalization method is not a viable option at 1064 nm. Instead, CALIOP’s 1064 nm channel is calibrated relative to the 532 nm channel using the backscatter from a carefully selected subset of cirrus cloud measurements. In this paper we deliver a full account of the revised 1064 nm calibration algorithms implemented for the version 4.1 (V4) release of the CALIPSO lidar data products, with particular emphases on the physical basis for the selection of calibration quality cirrus clouds and on the new averaging scheme required to characterize intra-orbit calibration variability. The V4 procedures introduce latitudinally varying changes in the 1064 nm calibration coefficients of 25 % or more relative to previous data releases and are shown to substantially improve the accuracy of the V4 1064 nm attenuated backscatter coefficients. By evaluating calibration coefficients derived using both water clouds and ocean surfaces as alternate calibration targets, and through comparisons to independent, collocated measurements made by airborne high spectral resolution lidar, we conclude that the CALIOP V4 1064 nm calibration coefficients are accurate to within 3 %.

International audience; The quantification of aerosol and cloud radiative properties, optical depth (OD), and phase function is of high importance to quantify the human impact on climate. Several approaches now exist based on both active (lidar) and passive (spectroradiometers) sensors. However, passive space observations over land are hindered by the important contribution of the surface to the total reflectance. Retrievals of OD from backscatter lidars do not face this issue but are usually based on the use of an a priori value of the so-called lidar ratio, which may lead to a significant uncertainty. The objective of this paper is to analyze a possible path for the space borne backscatter lidar onboard the Cloud Aerosol Lidar Pathfinder Observations satellite to overcome those issues. We will discuss the space-borne retrievals of ODs based on the land surface returns, either in combination with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or as a stand-alone lidar method. Analyses will be presented for a few cases on different surface types. The different error sources are discussed and further solutions to reduce them are explored. We show that the surface types have different polarization and multispectral properties, which can open new research areas based on space lidars. Using such an approach, we show that a retrieval technique based on the use of lidar land surface returns can be used to directly retrieve OD of aerosols and semitransparent cloud.

Retrievals of aerosol optical depth (AOD) from the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) satellite sensor require the assumption of the extinction-to-backscatter ratio, also known as the lidar ratio. This paper evaluates a new method to calculate the lidar ratio of marine aerosols using two independent sources: the AOD from the Synergized Optical Depth of Aerosols (SODA) project and the integrated attenuated backscatter from CALIOP. With this method, the particulate lidar ratio can be derived for individual CALIOP retrievals in single aerosol layer, cloud-free columns over the ocean. Global analyses are carried out using CALIOP level 2, 5 km marine aerosol layer products and the collocated SODA nighttime data from December 2007 to November 2010. The global mean lidar ratio for marine aerosols was found to be 26 sr, roughly 30% higher than the current value prescribed by the CALIOP standard retrieval algorithm. Data analysis also showed considerable spatiotemporal variability in the calculated lidar ratio over the remote oceans. The calculated marine aerosol lidar ratio is found to vary with the mean ocean surface wind speed (U10). An increase in U10 reduces the mean lidar ratio for marine regions from 32 ± 17 sr (for 0 < U10 < 4 m s−1) to 22 ± 7 sr (for U10 > 15 m s−1). Such changes in the lidar ratio are expected to have a corresponding effect on the marine AOD from CALIOP. The outcomes of this study are relevant for future improvements of the SODA and CALIOP operational product and could lead to more accurate retrievals of marine AOD.

Data products from the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) on board Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) were recently updated following the implementation of new (version 4.1) calibration algorithms for all of the level 1 attenuated backscatter measurements. In this work we present the motivation for and the implementation of the version 4.1 nighttime 532 nm parallel channel calibration. The nighttime 532 nm calibration is the most fundamental calibration of CALIOP data, since all of CALIOP’s other radiometric calibration procedures – i.e., the 532 nm daytime calibration and the 1064 nm calibrations during both nighttime and daytime – depend either directly or indirectly on the 532 nm nighttime calibration. The accuracy of the 532 nm nighttime calibration is significantly improved by raising the molecular normalization altitude from 30–34 km to 36–39 km to substantially reduce stratospheric aerosol contamination. Due to the greatly reduced molecular number density and consequently reduced signal-to-noise ratio at the higher altitudes used to avoid aerosols, the signal is averaged over a larger number of samples. The new calibration procedure is shown to eliminate biases introduced in earlier versions and consequently leads to an improved representation of stratospheric aerosols. Validation results using airborne lidar measurements are also presented. Biases relative to collocated measurements acquired by the Langley Research Center (LaRC) airborne High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL) are reduced from 3.6 % ± 2.2 % in the version 3 data set to 1.6 % ± 2.4 % in the version 4.1 release.

International audience; We analyzed different models to estimate absorption at W-band by gaseous species by taking advantage of the collocated CloudSat-Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) measurements. We used the power backscattered by the surface in the green visible wavelength of the lidar of CALIPSO as a reference to infer CloudSat's 94-GHz ocean surface backscatter in clear air and infer the attenuation introduced by gaseous absorption. Different millimeter-wave propagation models (MPMs) and different sources to determine the profile of atmospheric thermodynamic state are used to estimate CloudSat attenuation. These estimates are compared to the observations to calculate the residual dispersion. We show here that we need to adjust the empirical constants of preexisting water vapor absorption models to minimize the dispersion. Our results indicate an overestimation of absorption by the water vapor continuum at 94 GHz in Liebe-based MPM. We also propose a new empirical model to better represent the absorption of the water vapor continuum near 94 GHz. When this model is used in combination with the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System water vapor path and the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office water vapor vertical profile distribution, it leads to the lowest dispersion of the data on a statistical basis (global data over one month). The improved model is expected to optimize water vapor correction applied to CloudSat data and, potentially, also to improve interpretation of brightness temperature measurements in the W-band (e.g., 85- and 98-GHz radiometric channels).

This study presents a comparison between the retrieval of aerosol above clouds (AAC) optical properties from different techniques developed for the A-Train sensors CALIOP and POLDER/PARASOL. The main objective is to analyse the consistency between the results of the active and the passive measurements. We assess the Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) of above optically thick clouds (Cloud Optical Thickness (COT) larger than 3) and their Ångström Exponent (AE). These parameters are retrieved with the CALIOP operational method, the POLDER operational polarization method and the CALIOP-based depolarization ratio method (DRM) – for which we also propose a calibrated version (denominated DRMSODA, SODA as Synergized Optical Depth of Aerosols). We analyse six months of data over three distinctive regions characterized by different types of aerosols and clouds. Additionally, for these regions, we select three case studies: a biomass-burning event over the South Atlantic Ocean, a Saharan dust case over the North Atlantic Ocean and a Siberian biomass-burning event over the North Pacific Ocean. 4.5 years of data are studied over the entire globe for distinct situations where aerosol and cloud layers are in contact or vertically separated. Overall, the regional analysis shows a good correlation between the POLDER and the DRMSODA AOTs when the microphysics of aerosols is dominated by fine-mode particles of biomass-burning aerosols from southern Africa (correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.83) or coarse-mode aerosols of Saharan dust (R2 of 0.82). A good correlation between these methods (R2 of 0.68) is also observed in the global treatment, when the aerosol and cloud layers are well separated. The analysis of detached layers also shows a mean difference in AOT of 0.07 at 532 nm between POLDER and DRMSODA, at a global scale. The correlation between the retrievals decreases when a complex mixture of aerosols is expected (R2 of 0.37) – as in the East Asia region, and when the aerosol-cloud layers are in contact (R2 of 0.36). The correlation coefficient between the CALIOP operational method and POLDER is low, as the CALIOP method largely underestimates the aerosol loading above clouds by a factor that ranges from two to four. Potential biases on the retrieved AOT as a function of cloud properties are also investigated. For different types of scenes, the retrieval of above-cloud AOT from POLDER and from DRM are compared for different underlying cloud properties (droplet effective radius (reff) and COT retrieved with MODIS). The results reveal that DRM AOT vary with reff. When accounting for reff in the DRM algorithm, the consistency between the methods increases. The sensitivity study shows that an additional polarized signal coming from aerosols located within the cloud could affect the polarization method, which leads to an overestimation of the AOT retrieved with POLDER algorithm. In addition, the aerosols attached or within the cloud can potentially impact the DRM retrievals through the modification of the cloud droplet chemical composition and its ability to backscatter light. The next step of this work is to combine POLDER and CALIOP to investigate the impacts of aerosols on clouds and climate when these particles are transported above or within clouds.

In this paper, we analyze the performance of the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), launched in October 2006 on board METOP-A, for the monitoring of carbon monoxide (CO) during extreme fire events, focusing on the record-breaking fires which devastated thousands of square kilometers of forest in Greece during the last week (23–30) of August 2007. After an assessment of the quality of the profiles retrieved using the Fast Optimal Retrievals on Layers for IASI (FORLI) algorithm, the information provided on fire emissions and subsequent pollution outflow is discussed. Large CO plumes were observed above the Mediterranean Basin and North Africa, with total CO columns exceeding 24×1018 molecules/cm2 and absolute volume mixing ratios up to 4 ppmv on the 25 August. Up to 30×1018 molecules/cm2 and 22 ppmv in the lower troposphere are retrieved close to the fires above the Peloponnese, but with larger uncertainty. The average root-mean-square (RMS) difference between simulated and observed spectra is close to the estimated radiometric noise level, slightly increasing (by ~14%) in the fresh fire plumes. CO profiles are retrieved with a vertical resolution of about 8 km, with ~1.7 pieces of independent information on the vertical in the region considered and a maximum sensitivity in the free troposphere (~4–5 km). Using the integrated total amount, the increase in CO burden due to these fires is estimated to 0.321 Tg, ~40% of the total annual anthropogenic emissions in Greece. The patterns of these CO enhancements are in good agreement with the aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrieved from the MODIS measurements, highlighting a rapid transport of trace gases and aerosols across the Mediterranean Basin (less than one day). While the coarse vertical resolution will not allow the location of the exact plume height, the large CO enhancements observed in the lower troposphere are consistent with the maximum aerosol backscatter coefficient at ~2 km detected by the CALIPSO lidar in space (CALIOP).

International audience; Beam attenuation coefficient, c, provides an important optical index of plankton standing stocks, such as phytoplankton biomass and total particulate carbon concentration. Unfortunately, c has proven difficult to quantify through remote sensing. Here, we introduce an innovative approach for estimating c using lidar depolarization measurements and diffuse attenuation coefficients from ocean color products or lidar measurements of Brillouin scattering. The new approach is based on a theoretical formula established from Monte Carlo simulations that links the depolarization ratio of sea water to the ratio of diffuse attenuation Kd and beam attenuation C (i.e., a multiple scattering factor).On July 17, 2014, the CALIPSO satellite was tilted 30° off-nadir for one nighttime orbit in order to minimize ocean surface backscatter and demonstrate the lidar ocean subsurface measurement concept from space. Depolarization ratios of ocean subsurface backscatter are measured accurately. Beam attenuation coefficients computed from the depolarization ratio measurements compare well with empirical estimates from ocean color measurements. We further verify the beam attenuation coefficient retrievals using aircraft-based high spectral resolution lidar (HSRL) data that are collocated with in-water optical measurements.

Small-scale variation in temperature and salinity can lead to localized changes in the index of refraction and can distort electro-optical (EO) signal transmission in ocean and atmosphere. This phenomenon is well-studied in the atmosphere and in this context is generally called “optical turbulence”. Less is known about how turbulent fluctuations in the ocean distort EO signal transmissions, an effect that can impact various underwater applications, from diver visibility to active and passive remote sensing. To provide a test bed for the study of the impacts from turbulent flows on EO signal transmission, as well as to examine and mitigate turbulence effects, we set up a laboratory turbulence environment allowing the variation of turbulence intensity. Convective turbulence is generated in a large Rayleigh-Benard type tank (5m by 0.5m by 0.5m) and the turbulent flow is quantified using a suite of sensors that includes high-resolution Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter profilers (Vectrino Profiler) and fast thermistor probes (PME Conductivity- Temperature probe). These measurements allow the characterization of turbulent kinetic energy and temperature variance dissipation rates in the tank, for different convective strengths. Optical image degradation in the tank is then assessed in relation to turbulence intensity. The turbulence measurements are further complemented by very high-resolution computational fluid dynamics simulations of convective turbulence emulating the tank environment. These numerical simulations supplement the sparse laboratory measurements, providing full fields of temperature and velocity in the tank. The numerical data compared well to the laboratory data and both conformed to the Kolmogorov spectrum of turbulence and the Batchelor spectrum of temperature fluctuations. The numerical model was able to qualitatively reproduce the turbulence fields observed in the laboratory tank. Quantitatively, the numerical simulations are consistent with the observed e in the tank, but do not fully resolve the temperature gradients and thus underestimate Ξ. The unique approach of integrating optical techniques, turbulence measurements and numerical simulations can help advance our understanding of how to mitigate the effects of turbulence impacts on underwater optical signal transmission, as well as on the use of optical techniques to probe oceanic processes.

The global mean lidar ratio for sea spray aerosols was found to be 26 sr, roughly 30% higher than the current value prescribed by CALIOP standard retrieval algorithm. Data analysis also showed considerable spatiotemporal variability in the calculated lidar ratio over the remote oceans. The calculated aerosol lidar ratios are shown to be inversely related to the mean ocean surface wind speed: increase in ocean surface wind speed (U10) from 0 to >15 m s−1 reduces the mean lidar ratios for sea spray particles from 32 sr (for 015 m s−1). Such changes in the lidar ratio are expected to have a corresponding effect on the sea spray AOD. The outcomes of this study are relevant for future improvements of the SODA and CALIOP operational product and could lead to more accurate retrievals of sea spray AOD.

In the frame of validation of the spatial observations from the radiometer IIR on board CALIPSO, the two airborne campaigns Cirrus Cloud Experiment (CIRCLE)-2 and Biscay ‘08 took place in 2007 and 2008 in the western part of France, over the Atlantic Ocean. During these experiments, remote sensing measurements were made over cirrus clouds, right under the track of Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) in space and time collocation. For this purpose, a Falcon-20 aircraft was equipped with the Lidar pour l’Etude des Interactions Aérosols Nuages Dynamique Rayonnement et du Cycle de l’Eau (LEANDRE)-New Generation (NG) and the thermal infrared radiometer Conveyable Low-Noise Infrared Radiometer for Measurements of Atmosphere and Ground Surface Targets (CLIMAT)-Airborne Version (AV), whose spectral characteristics are strongly similar to those of the infrared imaging radiometer (IIR). In situ measurements were also taken in cirrus clouds during CIRCLE-2. After comparisons, consistent agreements are found between brightness temperatures measured by CLIMAT-AV and IIR. However, deviations in the brightness temperature measurements are still observed, mainly in the 8.6-μm channels. Simulations using a radiative transfer code are performed along a perfectly clear-sky area to show that these dissimilarities are inherent in slight differences between the spectral channels of both radiometers, and in differences between their altitudes. Cloudy and imperfectly clear areas are found to be harder to interpret, but the measurements are still coherent by taking into account experimental uncertainties. In the end, IIR measurements can be validated unambiguously.

Ocean surface observations from the CloudSat radar and the spaceborne lidar aboard the Cloud Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) platform are combined in the Synergized Optical Depth of Aerosol (SODA) algorithm and used to retrieve the optical depth of semitransparent single-layered cirrus clouds. In the operational CALIPSO data analysis, lidar-derived optical depths are typically estimated using a correction factor for multiple scattering effects and a single global mean lidar ratio. By combining the SODA approach with observations from the CALIPSO Imaging Infrared Radiometer, accurate values for both of these parameters can be derived directly from the measurements. Application of this approach yields a multiple scattering factor of 0.61 ± 0.15 sr, which is essentially identical to the value used operationally. However, the standard lidar ratio used in the CALIPSO daytime operational analysis is found to be biased low by around 25%. As a consequence, the lidar-derived optical depths retrieved from the daytime operational analyses are more than 30% smaller than those derived using SODA. The lidar ratio for semitransparent cirrus is found to be rather stable over ocean (33 ± 5 sr) with slight variations as a function of temperature and latitude. The geographic distribution shows a moderate decrease of average lidar ratio values over Indonesia during daytime, which may be attributed to a larger occurrence of high-altitude cirrus layers in this convectively active area.

International audience; We are demonstrating on a few cases the capability of CALIPSO to retrieve the 532 nm lidar ratio over the ocean when CloudSat surface scattering cross section is used as a constraint. We are presenting the algorithm used and comparisons with the column lidar ratio retrieved by the NASA airborne high spectral resolution lidar. For the three cases presented here, the agreement is fairly good. The average CALIPSO 532 nm column lidar ratio bias is 13.7% relative to HSRL, and the relative standard deviation is 13.6%. Considering the natural variability of aerosol microphysical properties, this level of accuracy is significant since the lidar ratio is a good indicator of aerosol types. We are discussing dependencies of the accuracy of retrieved aerosol lidar ratio on atmospheric aerosol homogeneity, lidar signal to noise ratio, and errors in the optical depth retrievals. We are obtaining the best result (bias 7% and standard deviation around 6%) for a nighttime case with a relatively constant lidar ratio (in the vertical) indicative of homogeneous aerosol type.

International audience; The lidar equation for ocean at optical wavelengths including subsurface signals is revisited using the recent work of the radiative transfer and ocean color community for passive measurements. The previous form of the specular and subsurface echo term are corrected from their heritage, which originated from passive remote sensing of whitecaps, and is improved for more accurate use in future lidar research. A corrected expression for specular and subsurface lidar return is presented. The previous formalism does not correctly address angular dependency of specular lidar return and overestimates the subsurface term by a factor ranging from 89% to 194% for a nadir pointing lidar. Suggestions for future improvements to the lidar equation are also presented.

[1] The CALIOP depolarization measurements, combined with backscatter intensity measurements, are effective in discriminating between water clouds and ice clouds. The same depolarization measurements can also be used for estimating liquid water content information. Using cloud temperature information from the collocated infrared imaging radiometer measurements and cloud water paths from collocated MODIS measurements, this study compiles global statistics of the occurrence frequency, liquid water content, liquid water path, and their temperature dependence. For clouds with temperatures between −40°C and 0°C, the liquid phase fractions and liquid water paths are significantly higher than the ones from previous studies using passive remote sensing measurements. At midlatitudes, the occurrence of liquid phase clouds at temperatures between −40°C and 0°C depends jointly on both cloud height and cloud temperature. At high latitudes, more than 95% of low-level clouds with temperatures between −40°C and 0°C are water clouds. Supercooled water clouds are mostly observed over ocean near the storm-track regions and high-latitude regions. Supercooled water clouds over land are observed in the Northern Hemisphere over Europe, East Asia, and North America, and these are the supercooled water clouds with highest liquid water contents. The liquid water content of all supercooled water clouds is characterized by a Gamma (Γ) distribution. The mode values of liquid water content are around 0.06 g/m3 and are independent of cloud temperature. For temperatures warmer than −15°C, mean value of the liquid water content is around 0.14 g/m3. As the temperature decreases, the mean cloud liquid water content also decreases. These results will benefit cloud models and cloud parameterizations used in climate models in improving their ice-phase microphysics parameterizations and the aviation hazard forecast.

This paper presents a comparison of combined Cloudâ��Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) and Cloudâ��Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) extinction retrievals with airborne lidar and in situ cirrus cloud measurements. Specially oriented research flights were carried out in western Europe in May 2007 during the Cirrus Cloud Experiment (CIRCLEâ��2) with the German Deutsches Zentrum f�¼r Luftâ�� und Raumfahrt (DLR) and the French Service des Avions Fran�§ais Instrument�©s pour la Recherche en Environnement (SAFIRE) Falcon aircraft equipped for remote and in situ measurements, respectively. Four cirrus cloud situations including thin cirrus layers and outflow cirrus linked to midlatitude fronts and convective systems were chosen to perform experimental collocated observations along the satellite overpasses. The measurements were carried out with temperatures ranging between â��38�°C and â��60�°C and with extinction coefficients no larger than 2 kmâ��1. Comparisons between CALIOP and airborne lidar (LEANDRE New Generation (LNG)) attenuated backscatter coefficients reveal much larger CALIOP values for one frontal cirrus situation which could be explained by oriented pristine ice crystals. During the four selected cases the CALIOP cirrus extinction profiles were compared with in situ extinction coefficients derived from the Polar Nephelometer. The results show a very good agreement for two situations (frontal and outflow cases) despite very different cloud conditions. The slope parameters of linear fittings of CALIOP extinction coefficients with respect to in situ measurements are 0.90 and 0.94, with correlation coefficients of 0.69 and only 0.36 for the latter case because of a small number of measurements. On the contrary, significant differences are evidenced for two other situations. In thin frontal cirrus at temperatures ranging between â��58�°C and â��60�°C, systematic larger CALIOP extinctions can be explained by horizontally oriented ice crystals with prevalent planarâ��plate shape as revealed by the Cloud Particle Imager instrument. This nicely explains the disagreements between CALIOP and LNG observations for that case. For the last cirrus situation related to dense outflow cirrus, CALIOP extinctions are systematically lower than the in situ observations. No clear explanations can be drawn to assess this feature, but the shattering of ice crystals on probe tips may enhance the measured extinction because numerous large ice crystals are observed during this cirrus situation. Finally, relationships between the ice water content and the extinction coefficient, the effective diameter, and the temperature are determined from this in situ measurements data set.

Pollutant plumes with enhanced concentrations of trace gases and aerosols were observed over the southern coast of West Africa during August 2006 as part of the AMMA wet season field campaign. Plumes were observed both in the mid and upper troposphere. In this study we examined the origin of these pollutant plumes, and their potential to photochemically produce ozone (O3) downwind over the Atlantic Ocean. Their possible contribution to the Atlantic O3 maximum is also discussed. Runs using the BOLAM mesoscale model including biomass burning carbon monoxide (CO) tracers were used to confirm an origin from central African biomass burning fires. The plumes measured in the mid troposphere (MT) had significantly higher pollutant concentrations over West Africa compared to the upper tropospheric (UT) plume. The mesoscale model reproduces these differences and the two different pathways for the plumes at different altitudes: transport to the north-east of the fire region, moist convective uplift and transport to West Africa for the upper tropospheric plume versus north-west transport over the Gulf of Guinea for the mid-tropospheric plume. Lower concentrations in the upper troposphere are mainly due to enhanced mixing during upward transport. Model simulations suggest that MT and UT plumes are 16 and 14 days old respectively when measured over West Africa. The ratio of tracer concentrations at 600 hPa and 250 hPa was estimated for 14–15 August in the region of the observed plumes and compares well with the same ratio derived from observed carbon dioxide (CO2) enhancements in both plumes. It is estimated that, for the period 1–15 August, the ratio of Biomass Burning (BB) tracer concentration transported in the UT to the ones transported in the MT is 0.6 over West Africa and the equatorial South Atlantic. Runs using a photochemical trajectory model, CiTTyCAT, initialized with the observations, were used to estimate in-situ net photochemical O3 production rates in these plumes during transport downwind of West Africa. The mid-troposphere plume spreads over altitude between 1.5 and 6 km over the Atlantic Ocean. Even though the plume was old, it was still very photochemically active (mean net O3 production rates over 10 days of 2.6 ppbv/day and up to 7 ppbv/day during the first days) above 3 km especially during the first few days of transport westward. It is also shown that the impact of high aerosol loads in the MT plume on photolysis rates serves to delay the peak in modelled O3 concentrations. These results suggest that a significant fraction of enhanced O3 in mid-troposphere over the Atlantic comes from BB sources during the summer monsoon period. According to simulated occurrence of such transport, BB may be the main source for O3 enhancement in the equatorial south Atlantic MT, at least in August 2006. The upper tropospheric plume was also still photochemically active, although mean net O3 production rates were slower (1.3 ppbv/day). The results suggest that, whilst the transport of BB pollutants to the UT is variable (as shown by the mesoscale model simulations), pollution from biomass burning can make an important contribution to additional photochemical production of O3 in addition to other important sources such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) from lightning.

Backscatter lidar observations such as those provided by the CALIPSO mission are expected to give complementary information to long-used radiometric observations for aerosol properties characterization important to climate and environment issues. However, retrieving aerosol optical depth (AOD) and profiling the aerosol extinction cannot be done accurately applying a standard inversion procedure to the backscatter lidar measurements, without a precise knowledge of aerosol properties on the vertical. The objective of this first study is to propose a new approach to quantify the AOD over the ocean combining the surface return signals from the lidar and radar onboard the CALIPSO and CloudSat platforms, respectively. Taking advantage of the satellite formation within the AQUA-train, first comparisons of AODs retrieved with our method and MODIS ones at tropical latitudes show an overall bias smaller than 1%, and a standard deviation of about 0.07. These first results are presented and error sources are discussed.

We study the impacts of the bio-optical model variations on the angular distribution (f/Q factor) of the upwelling radiance field in ocean waters. An ocean water bio-optical model has been combined with a vector radiative transfer model to calculate the f/Q factors systematically. The f/Q factors are compared to those in [Appl. Opt.41, 6289 (2002)10.1364/AO.41.006289APOPAI1559-128X] and the differences are found to be within ±10% for 81% of the total number of cases covering all wavelengths, chlorophyll a concentrations, and solar and viewing geometries. The differences are attributed to the choice of ocean water scattering function and scattering coefficient biases. In addition, we study the uncertainty of f/Q factor due to three factors: (I) the absorption coefficient of the colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), (II) the particle scattering coefficient, and (III) the ocean water depolarization. The impacts of ocean water depolarization on the f/Q variation is found to be negligible. If we perturb the CDOM absorption coefficient by a factor ranging from 0.1 to 10, the f/Q values vary within ±5% of the average behavior of ocean waters for 93% of the cases. If we perturb the scattering coefficients by a factor ranging from 0.5 to 2.0, the f/Q variation is within ±5% for 81% of the cases studied. This work contributes to understanding the uncertainty of ocean color remote sensing.

A realistic nonspherical model for Emiliania huxleyi (EHUX) is built, based on electron micrographs of coccolithophore cells. The Inherent Optical Properties (IOP) of the EHUX are then calculated numerically by using the discrete dipole approximation. The coccolithophore model includes a near-spherical core with the refractive index of 1.04 + m(i)j, and a carbonate shell formed by smaller coccoliths with refractive index of 1.2 + m(i)j, where m(i) = 0 or 0.01 and j(2) = -1. The reported IOP are the Mueller scattering matrix, backscattering probability, and depolarization ratio. Our calculation shows that the Mueller matrices of coccolithophores show different angular dependence from those of coccoliths.
