The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) has made important progress in Earth observation and applications. With the successful design of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), four global navigation satellite systems are available worldwide, together with Galileo, GLONASS, and GPS. These systems have been widely employed in positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT). Furthermore, GNSS refraction, reflection, and scattering signals can remotely sense the Earth's surface and atmosphere with powerful implications for environmental remote sensing. In this paper, the recent developments and new application progress of multi-GNSS in Earth observation are presented and reviewed, including the methods of BDS/GNSS for Earth observations, GNSS navigation and positioning performance (e.g., GNSS-PPP and GNSS-NRTK), GNSS ionospheric modelling and space weather monitoring, GNSS meteorology, and GNSS-reflectometry and its applications. For instance, the static Precise Point Positioning (PPP) precision of most MGEX stations was improved by 35.1%, 18.7%, and 8.7% in the east, north, and upward directions, respectively, with PPP ambiguity resolution (AR) based on factor graph optimization. A two-layer ionospheric model was constructed using IGS station data through three-dimensional ionospheric model constraints and TEC accuracy was increased by about 20–27% with the GIM model. Ten-minute water level change with centimeter-level accuracy was estimated with ground-based multiple GNSS-R data based on a weighted iterative least-squares method. Furthermore, a cyclone and its positions were detected by utilizing the GNSS-reflectometry from the space-borne Cyclone GNSS (CYGNSS) mission. Over the years, GNSS has become a dominant technology among Earth observation with powerful applications, not only for conventional positioning, navigation and timing techniques, but also for integrated remote sensing solutions, such as monitoring typhoons, river water level changes, geological geohazard warnings, low-altitude UAV navigation, etc., due to its high performance, low cost, all time and all weather. The spread of new survey strategies for the documentation and 3D reconstruction of complex cultural heritage sites enables the implementation of virtual web navigation systems that are useful for their virtual fruition. In particular, remote indoor/outdoor exploration enhances our knowledge of cultural heritage sites, even in inaccessible or difficult-to-visit states. However, the 3D data acquisition of complex sites for documentation remains a challenge, and the 3D virtual exploration of these datasets is often limited to property software implementations. This work describes the 3D documentation and construction of an indoor/outdoor web visualization system based on the WebGL open-source technology of a complex cultural heritage site. The case study regards the complex of "Santa Maria della Grotta" in Marsala (Italy), which is composed of a church that is located mostly underground and is connected to a human-dug hypogea on the site of a Punic necropolis. The aim of the work was to obtain detailed 3D documentation of the indoor and outdoor spaces through the integration of mobile laser scanning and aerial photogrammetry survey, and to develop a virtual web navigation system for the remote exploration of the site. The indoor/outdoor web navigation system provides users with a simple, web-browser-based 3D visualization, enabling the dissemination of the monuments' knowledge on the web through an economically sustainable solution based on open-source technologies. RANDOM forest algorithms ,COASTAL wetlands ,VEGETATION classification ,MACHINE learning ,WETLANDS monitoring ,PLANT phenology - Abstract
The identification of wetland vegetation is essential for environmental protection and management as well as for monitoring wetlands' health and assessing ecosystem services. However, some limitations on vegetation classification may be related to remote sensing technology, confusion between plant species, and challenges related to inadequate data accuracy. In this paper, vegetation classification in the Yancheng Coastal Wetlands is studied and evaluated from Sentinel-2 images based on a random forest algorithm. Based on consistent time series from remote sensing observations, the characteristic patterns of the Yancheng Coastal Wetlands were better captured. Firstly, the spectral features, vegetation indices, and phenological characteristics were extracted from remote sensing images, and classification products were obtained by constructing a dense time series using a dataset based on Sentinel-2 images in Google Earth Engine (GEE). Then, remote sensing classification products based on the random forest machine learning algorithm were obtained, with an overall accuracy of 95.64% and kappa coefficient of 0.94. Four indicators (POP, SOS, NDVIre, and B12) were the main contributors to the importance of the weight analysis for all features. Comparative experiments were conducted with different classification features. The results show that the method proposed in this paper has better classification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gravimetry · Altimetry · Reference network · Geodesy · Physical measurements - Abstract
The purpose of this work is to explore the methodological and instrumental review for the realization of a new absolute gravity and height reference network in Sicily. The aim of the network is to contribute to the new reference systems in the Italian area, useful for all the scientific and technological activities related to the gravity field and to the proper definition of a modern height system in this region. The network is composed of 5 stations, evenly distributed forming a large mesh network which roughly covers the entire Sicily. Since four of the five selected stations were measured also in the 1990s, it was also possible to evaluate the long-term behavior (basic requirement for a reference network) of the gravity values at these stations, as well as the ground deformation patterns in the closest GPS/GNSS stations. The observed gravity changes over a time interval of about 30 years at the absolute stations and in the surrounding areas, confirm the stability of the selected areas/sites over the long time.

International audience; Ice-sheet and sea-level fluctuations during the Early and Middle Pleistocene are as yet poorly understood. A stalactite from a karst cave in North West Sicily (Italy) provides the first evidence of four marine inundations that correspond to relative sea-level highstands at the time of the Middle Pleistocene Transition. The speleothem is located ∼97 m above mean sea level as result of Quaternary uplift. Its section reveals three marine hiatuses and a coral overgrowth that fixes the age of final marine ingression at 1.124 ± 0.2, thus making this speleothem the oldest stalactite with marine hiatuses ever studied to date. Scleractinian coral species witness light-limited conditions and water depth of 20–50 m. Integrating the coral-constrained depth with the geologically constrained uplift rate and an ensemble of RSL scenarios, we find that the age of the last marine ingression most likely coincides with Marine Isotope Stage 35 on the basis of a probabilistic assessment. Our findings are consistent with a significant Antarctic ice-sheet retreat.

This article summarizes the experience gained between 2012 and 2013 by the Department of Civil, Environmental, Aerospace and Materials of the University of Palermo on the integrated survey of Park Ninni Cassarà in Palermo, Italy and the subsequent testing of methods, tools and technique based on current research regarding the acquisition and processing of GNSS data and Laser Scanner. The work has been addressed in order to select the less expensive and fast techniques to be applied in the acquisition phase. After first monumenting sixteen control points distribuited within the site and surveyed by GNSS receivers, the was planned and carried out the survey in NRTK mode of the path and of the key elements of the park. It was therefore decided to experiment with MMS acquisition of the park through which it was possible to acquire data about the morphology of the terrain, the conditions of the state of footpaths, building that laid ahead and distributions of street furniture. The points clouds obtained through this technology have been subjected to both automatic and manual procedure to verify that, finally, their actual descriptive possibilities of real forms.

The work here shown consists of an integrated survey (Topographic/static GPS/NRTK/Laser Scanning) of a small Sicilian extraurban context, Borgo Schirò, known for the historical events that led to its construction, following the issuance of the law n. 1 of January 2nd 1940, for the elimination of the latifondium. Given the different nature of the elements to be surveyed (buildings, urban elements, roads) different techniques of metric data acquisition were used for each of them. The integration of all of them, allowed a useful comparison of the final products, offering the possibility of making highly accurate qualitative analysis on the individual structural cases and a high level of detail in the architectural cases focused. The reduced timing and the very small number of operators needed for data acquisition and processing, make the achieved outcomes satisfactory and the integration of survey methods adopted clearly successful.

Particularly, two robotic total stations and high precision digital photogrammetric systems were employed. In order to correlate the displacements of the rollers on which the steel structure of the dome rest with the thermal gradients, different thermal images were acquired. The main goal of the work was to compare the two techniques with reference to very small (sub-millimeter) deformation measurements. The obtained results show that the rollers are still working correctly. In this work the author show the results of testing conducted in last few years within the network of University of Palermo called UNIPA NRTK GNSS. The University of Palermo, in order to carry out scientific tests on the use of CORS networks for real time positioning, have realized a network of reference stations. The network was set up during a National Research Scientific Project entitled: "Networks of permanent GPS stations for survey in real time control and use of emergency" and was the first made in Sicily for scientific GNSS-NRTK research but is also used for topographic and cartographic applications. The goal of the work is to verify the reliability of the network infrastructure (successful tests, failed initialization time, satellite configurations) and the repeatability assessment of the accuracy of measurements positioning. Reliability and repeatability was evaluated considering the possibility of receiving the correction in VRS, FKP or EGNOS mode in surveys conducted in different areas and in different days. Accuracy was determined by comparing the coordinates of some points calculated in post-processing and NRTK or EGNOS surveys. Some test-areas with different characteristics are chosen to valuate reliability and accuracy. In selected test-areas we have been considered 35 vertex, including some of IGM95 network and other to local network. The static measurements were performed on different days than those of the surveys NRTK and was carry out with 40 hours of occupation time, with different geometric configuration.

Analisi serie temporali, GPS, GNSS, NRTK, NDA ,Settore ICAR/06 - Topografia E Cartografia - Abstract

This work gives a comparison between different mathematical models for the evaluation of the movements of an earthen dam situated between Bivona and Alessandria della Rocca, in the province of Agrigento (AG), Italy. The models selected are of a hydraulic nature, already tested on concrete dams, and finite elements models which, on the contrary, exploit geotechnical parameters. The results obtained from the comparison of the displacement planimetric components and the relative time series of data over a period of two years appear to be fully satisfactory, in fact using both models of a hydraulic and geotechnical nature, we reach residues of just mm. To support this work, a monitoring procedure using GNSS techniques was taken into consideration. After that time series of the movements of some points at the top of the dam were attained in order to support the data obtained using the models, and to find the one that gives a better convergence. This paper describes the first results of a study, carried out within the national research program “Cofin2001”, on the potential use of high resolution satellite images for making digital orthophotos at a scale of 1:5000 and 1:10,000. Particularly, images from IKONOS II and QuickBird of four different types of areas were employed: the first area is the city of Palermo, a greatly urbanized area; the second area is the extra-urban territory near the town of Contessa Entellina in south-western Sicily; the third area is the famous tourist resort of Scopello, in the western Sicily; the last area is the Caselle Airport, a flat zone near Torino. The first three images were orthorectified by using Rational Functions Model (RFM), varying the number of the GCP and using a DEM with 10 m gridcell; the last image was orthorectified by using the Toutin model and a DEM with 40 m grid-cell.

The paper describes the first results of a study, supported by an Italian research project “Integrated Inertial Positioning Systems in Aerial Photogrammetry” on the potential use of these techniques for production of digital large scale orthophotos. The study has been done with aerial photographs collected from two different flights executed in Sicily: the former, relating to the city of Palermo, at average scale of 1:9300; the latter, over the city of Catania, at average scale of 1:2000. For both flights the orthorectification was carried out by direct georeferencing methods and by traditional photogrammetric techniques, using ground control points surveyed by means GPS techniques and aerial digital triangulation. The orthophotos generated by both methods were compared between themselves checking the influence of integrated sensors on the accuracy of the final product.

Over the last few years topographical techniques have developed an exponential trend towards simplifying and speeding, both survey operations and analysis of data collected reaching at the same time ever higher levels of accuracy. Among the technologies that are increasingly taking the field in this context is part of the Mobile Mapping System (MMS) that, on any mobile platform, combines sensors and measurement systems designed to provide a 3D position of the platform and, at the same time, capable to acquire geographic data without the aid of control points on the ground. The study reported concerns the verification of the reliability metrics and a qualitative MMS in order to evaluate its behavior in a particularly insidious as it can be an urban park; in particular, we report a series of experiments carried out from 2012 to the present in which we tried to test the potential of the system, comparing it with data from systems more "traditional", and to exploit all the products in an integrated survey carried out in dynamic mode. - Abstract
The work presented here concerns the integration of a series of surveys conducted by the Department of Civil, Environmental and Materials Engineering of the Polytechnic School of the University of Palermo, as part of a campaign of studies begun in 2012 with the objective of investigating about the potential and the accuracy reached by MMS (Mobile Mapping System) within the urban park Ninni Cassarà of Palermo. The survey was designed in several phases: first was a NRTK (Network Real Time Kinematic) mode. The second phase of the investigation has focused on the dynamic survey of the park with MMS, which was followed by the phase of return that led to the analysis of internal paths and the driveway to the park and to the development of an application for management of the maintenance of the same by exploiting the spherical images.
