5. Nanostructure Based Sensors For Gas Sensing : From Devices To Systems

Abstract

The development of solid state gas sensors based on microtransducers and nanostructured sensing materials is the key point in the design of portable measurement systems able to reach sensing and identification performance comparable with analytical ones. In such a context several efforts must be spent of course in the development of the sensing material, but also in the choice of the transducer mechanism and its structure, in the electrical characterization of the performance and in the design of suitable measurement setups. This call for papers invites researchers worldwide to report about their novel results on the most recent advances and overview in design and measurements for applications in gas sensors, along with their relevant features and technological aspects. Original research papers are welcome (but not limited) on all aspects that focus on the most recent advances in: (i) basic principles and modeling of gas and VOCs sensors; (ii) new gas sensor principles and technologies; (iii) Characterization and measurements methodologies; (iv) transduction and sampling systems; (vi) package optimization; (vi) gas sensor based systems and applications.

8. Theoretical and Experimental Analysis of a CSWPL Behavioral Model for Microwave GaN Transistors Including DC Bias Voltages

Abstract

In this article, a novel frequency-domain behavioral modeling approach for gallium-nitride (GaN) devices is presented. The proposed technique is based on using the canonical section-wise piecewise linear (CSWPL) model framework to interpolate the dc input and output bias voltages by a 2-D polynomial function. The basic theory associated with the developed model is described in detail and experimentally verified. The model is implemented in a commercial software and, then, validated through both dc and radio frequency (RF) tests with measured load-pull data from 6-W GaN devices. The achieved results demonstrate an excellent prediction capability, thereby proving the accuracy of the developed modeling methodology. Compared with the standard CSWPL model, the proposed model is able to predict the transistor behavior at different bias voltages with one single set of parameters, which greatly reduces the model complexity as well as the required extraction time. Compared with existing bias included models, the proposed solution shows accurate predictions over a wide range of input power levels and bias conditions, simultaneously. Additionally, the proposed model is utilized for a broadband power amplifier (PA) design for a further validation. The measurements carried out on the realized PA are compared with the simulations based on the proposed model. The comparison is performed at four different bias conditions. The agreement between measurements and simulations confirms the extracted model’s validity.

Abstract

In this paper, a novel approach is proposed for modeling the temperature-dependent behavior of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonator, by using a combination of a lumped-element equivalent circuit model and artificial neural networks (ANNs). More specifically, the temperature dependence of the equivalent circuit parameters/elements (ECPs) is modeled using ANNs, making the equivalent circuit model temperature-dependent. The developed model is validated by using scattering parameter measurements performed on a SAW device with a nominal resonant frequency of 423.22 MHz and under different temperature conditions (i.e., from 0 °C to 100 °C). The extracted ANN-based model can be used for simulation of the SAW resonator RF characteristics in the considered temperature range without the need for further measurements or equivalent circuit extraction procedures. Abstract

With the aim to develop robust and reliable sensing devices for fuel cell transportation technology, a new solid state hydrogen leak sensor based on a composite of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and platinum-doped titania nanotubes Pt-TiO2(NTs), has been reported. The thick film resistive-type sensor has been fabricated preparing first an array of Pt-TiO2(NTs) by anodic oxidation, mixing them with CNTs and finally depositing the CNTs/ Pt-TiO2(NTs) composite obtained on a ceramic substrate provided with Pt interdigitated electrodes. The electrical and hydrogen sensing characteristics of the sensor device have been investigated in the hydrogen concentration monitoring in the range 0.5-3 v/v (%) in air. The addition of CNTs and use of UV light decreased strongly the operating temperature, showing the applicability of the sensor device developed for hydrogen leak detection at near room temperature.

Abstract

This work focuses on the synthesis and gas sensing properties of ZnO nanowalls (ZnO NWLs) grown by a simple cheap chemical bath deposition method on a thin layer of aluminum (about 20 nm thick) printed on the Pt interdigitated electrodes area of conductometric alumina platforms. Post-deposition annealing in nitrogen atmosphere at 300 °C enabled the formation of a ZnO intertwined 2D foils network. A wide characterization was carried out to investigate the composition, morphology and microstructure of the nanowalls layer formed. The gas sensing properties of the films were studied by measuring the changes of electrical resistance upon exposure to low concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in air. The sensor response to CO or NO2 was found to be strongly dependent on the operating temperature, providing a means to tailor the sensitivity and selectivity toward these selected target gases.
