5. A Simple Graphene NH₃ Gas Sensor via Laser Direct Writing.

Abstract

Ammonia gas sensors are very essential in many industries and everyday life. However, their complicated fabrication process, severe environmental fabrication requirements and desorption of residual ammonia molecules result in high cost and hinder their market acceptance. Here, laser direct writing is used to fabricate three parallel porous 3D graphene lines on a polyimide (PI) tape to simply construct an ammonia gas sensor. The middle one works as an ammonia sensing element and the other two on both sides work as heaters to improve the desorption performance of the sensing element to ammonia gas molecules. The graphene lines were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The response and recovery time of the sensor without heating are 214 s and 222 s with a sensitivity of 0.087% ppm-1 for sensing 75 ppm ammonia gas, respectively. The experimental results prove that under the optimized heating temperature of about 70 °C the heaters successfully help implement complete desorption of residual NH₃ showing a good sensitivity and cyclic stability.

Abstract

To solve the problems of large volume and poor flexibility of the traditional pressure sensor prepared by rigid materials, a flexible pressure resistance sensor with mesh convex platform microstructure is prepared by using PDMS as a substrate and graphene as a conductive functional layer. The preparation process of the conductive layer and the substrate of the sensor are optimized. The effect of the concentration of graphene and thinckness of PDMS on the sensor’s sensitivity are investigated. The experimental results show that the addition of polyurethane to graphene and the hydrophilic treatment of the PDMS can improve the stability of the sensor. Excessive graphene blocks the microstructural gaps resulting in reduce sensitivity. The thicker the PDMS, the smaller the microstructural deformation, resulting in lower sensitivity. Based on the theoretical basis of elastic mechanics, the calculated results consistent with the experimental results. Finally, the performance of PDMS microstructure sensor with thickness of 0.2mm is tested. The sensor has a high linear sensitivity (0.152kPa-1) and a wide linear dynamic response range (0-4kPa), along with a fast response time of 83ms. The sensor is fixed to the finger for bending test and shows that the sensor is able to detect human physiological activity.

Abstract

Large-area, continuous monolayer WS2 exhibits great potential for future micro-nanodevice applications due to its special electrical properties and mechanical flexibility. In this work, the front opening quartz boat is used to increase the amount of sulfur (S) vapor under the sapphire substrate, which is critical for achieving large-area films during the chemical vapor deposition processes. COMSOL simulations reveal that the front opening quartz boat will significantly introduce gas distribute under the sapphire substrate. Moreover, the gas velocity and height of substrate away from the tube bottom will also affect the substrate temperature. By carefully optimizing the gas velocity, temperature, and height of substrate away from the tube bottom, a large-scale continues monolayered WS2 film was achieved. Field-effect transistor based on the as-grown monolayer WS2 showed a mobility of 3.76 cm2V−1 s−1 and ON/OFF ratio of 106. In addition, a flexible WS2/PEN strain sensor with a gauge factor of 306 was fabricated, showing great potential for applications in wearable biosensors, health monitoring, and human–computer interaction. Abstract

Minimizing droplet impact contact time is critical for applications such as self-cleaning, antierosion or anti-icing. Recent studies have used the texturing of surfaces to split droplets during impact or inducing asymmetric spreading, but these require specifically designed substrates that cannot be easily reconfigured. A key challenge is to realize an effective reduction in contact time during droplet impingement on a smooth surface without texturing but with active and programmable control. Our experimental results show that surface acoustic waves (SAWs), generated at a location distant from a point of droplet impact, can be used to minimize contact time by as much as 35% without requiring a textured surface. Additionally, the ability to switch on and off the SAWs means that a reduction in droplet impact contact time on a surface can be controlled in a programmable manner. Moreover, our results show that, by applying acoustic waves, the impact regime of the droplet on the solid surface can be changed from deposition or partial rebound to complete rebound. To study the dynamics of droplet impact, we develop a numerical model for multiphase flow and simulate different droplet impingement scenarios. Numerical results reveal that the acoustic waves can be used to modify and control the internal velocity fields inside the droplet. By breaking the symmetry of the internal recirculation patterns inside the droplet, the kinetic energy recovered from interfacial energy during the retraction process is increased, and the droplet can be fully separated from the surface with a much shorter contact time. Our work opens up opportunities to use SAW devices to minimize the contact time, change the droplet impact regime, and program or control the droplet’s rebounding on smooth or planar and curved surfaces, as well as rough or textured surfaces.

Abstract

We propose an approach to improve the performance of graphene-based gas sensors by the integration of defective graphene with pristine graphene. The defect density of defective graphene is controlled by the fluence of Si+ implantation, and an H2 etching process is utilized to tune defect size. As defects are able to adsorb target gas efficiently, the response of graphene-based sensors was improved remarkably with the controllable defect density. The response sensitivity of a defective-graphene-based sensor to concentrations of NO2 at 100 ppm can be as high as 248%, 13 times higher than that of a sensor built using pristine graphene. In addition, defective-graphene-based sensors exhibit high response and recovery rates at room temperature, which is comparable to those of pristine graphene-based sensors and faster than conventional defect-decorated graphene sensors. Most importantly, defective-graphene-based gas sensors exhibit excellent reproducibility, stability, and selectivity.
