We construct new string vacua featuring Brane Supersymmetry Breaking, based on $T^4/\mathbb{Z}_N$ orientifolds with $\text{O}5_+$ planes and $\overline{\text{D}5}$ branes. Differently from the original construction, in these vacua the cancellation of twisted R-R charges of D-branes and orientifold planes is achieved in a non-trivial way, and results in rigid configurations with few open-string moduli, which highly restrict the possible deformations of the model. The breaking of supersymmetry and, consequently, the non-vanishing untwisted and twisted NS-NS tadpoles, generates a rich potential both for the dilaton and the blown-up moduli. We also uncover the stringy origin of the $J$ form entering the gauge kinetic functions in the low-energy effective action, and display its relation to the NS-NS tadpoles for the scalars in the tensor multiplets. As a result, the $J$ form can be consistently identified also when supersymmetry is broken, thus solving an embarrassing puzzle related to its very existence. We also discuss the unitarity constraints for one-dimensional defects in these vacua, where the Ka$\check{\text{c}}$-Moody algebra for D9 and $\overline{\text{D}5}$ can be realised both in the left-moving and right-moving sectors., Comment: 1+52 pages

We study UV-complete Froggatt-Nielsen-like models for the generation of mass and mixing hierarchies, assuming that the integrated heavy fields are chiral with respect to an abelian Froggatt-Nielsen symmetry. It modifies the mixed anomalies with respect to the Standard Model gauge group, which opens up the possibility to gauge the Froggatt-Nielsen symmetry without the need to introduce additional spectator fermions, while keeping mass matrices usually associated to anomalous flavour symmetries. We give specific examples where this happens, and we study the flavourful axion which arises from an accidental Peccei-Quinn symmetry in some of those models. We identify a cubic holomorphic constraint that subtends the total breaking of N=2 supersymmetry in a vector multiplet and exhibit its microscopic origin. The new constraint leaves behind, at low energies, a vector and the two goldstini, in a non-linear Lagrangian that generalizes the N=2 Volkov-Akulov model., Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX

In this work we analyze constrained superfields in supersymmetry and supergravity. We propose a constraint that, in combination with the constrained goldstino multiplet, consistently removes any selected component from a generic superfield. We also describe its origin, providing the operators whose equations of motion lead to the decoupling of such components. We construct Supergravity models where the goldstino multiplet has a gravitational origin, being dual to the chiral curvature superfield. Supersymmetry is nonlinearly realized due to a nilpotent constraint, while the goldstino arises from $\gamma$-traces of the gauge-invariant gravitino field strength. After duality transformations one recovers, as expected, the standard Volkov-Akulov Lagrangian coupled to Supergravity, but the gravitational origin of the goldstino multiplet restricts the available types of matter couplings. We discuss the role of a class of higher dimensional operators in 4D N=1 supersymmetric effective theories. The Lagrangian in such theories is an expansion in momenta below the scale of "new physics" ($\Lambda$) and contains the effective operators generated by integrating out the "heavy states" above $\Lambda$ present in the UV complete theory. We go beyond the "traditional" leading order in this momentum expansion (in $\partial/\Lambda$). Keeping manifest supersymmetry and using superfield {\it constraints} we show that the corresponding higher dimensional (derivative) operators in the sectors of chiral, linear and vector superfields of a Lagrangian can be "unfolded" into second-order operators. The "unfolded" formulation has only polynomial interactions and additional massive superfields, some of which are ghost-like if the effective operators were {\it quadratic} in fields. Using this formulation, the UV theory emerges naturally and fixes the (otherwise unknown) coefficient and sign of the initial (higher derivative) operators. Integrating the massive fields of the "unfolded" formulation generates an effective theory with only polynomial effective interactions relevant for phenomenology. We also provide several examples of "unfolding" of theories with higher derivative {\it interactions} in the gauge or matter sectors that are actually ghost-free. We then illustrate how our method can be applied even when including {\it all orders} in the momentum expansion, by using an infinite set of superfield constraints and an iterative procedure, with similar results., Comment: 30 pages, LaTeX

We construct a supergravity model whose scalar degrees of freedom arise from a chiral superfield and are solely a scalaron and an axion that is very heavy during the inflationary phase. The model includes a second chiral superfield $X$, which is subject however to the constraint $X^2=0$ so that it describes only a Volkov - Akulov goldstino and an auxiliary field. We also construct the dual higher - derivative model, which rests on a chiral scalar curvature superfield ${\cal R}$ subject to the constraint ${\cal R}^2=0$, where the goldstino dual arises from the gauge - invariant gravitino field strength as $\gamma^{mn} {\cal D}_m \psi_n$. We discuss the implications for cosmic microwave background (CMB) observables, of a class of pre-inflationary dynamics suggested by string models where SUSY is broken due to the presence of D-branes and orientifolds preserving incompatible portions of it. In these models the would-be inflaton is forced to emerge from the initial singularity climbing up a mild exponential potential, until it bounces against a steep exponential potential of "brane SUSY breaking" scenarios, and as a result the ensuing descent gives rise to an inflationary epoch that begins when the system is still well off its eventual attractor. If a pre-inflationary climbing phase of this type had occurred within 6-7 e-folds of the horizon exit for the largest observable wavelengths, displacement off the attractor and initial-state effects would conspire to suppress power in the primordial scalar spectrum, enhancing it in the tensor spectrum and typically superposing oscillations on both. We investigate these imprints on CMB observables over a range of parameters, examine their statistical significance, and provide a semi-analytic rationale for our results. We examine the exact relation between the superconformal symmetry breaking chiral superfield (X) and the goldstino superfield in microscopic models of an arbitrary Kahler potential (K) and in the presence of matter fields. We investigate the decoupling of the massive sgoldstino and scalar matter fields and the offshell/onshell-SUSY expressions of their superfields in terms of the fermions composites. For general K of two superfields, we study the properties of the superfield X after integrating out these scalar fields, to show that in the infrared it satisfies (offshell) the condition $X^3=0$ and $X^2\not=0$. We then compare our results to those of the well-known method of constrained superfields discussed in the literature, based on the conjecture $X^2=0$. Our results can be used in applications, to couple offshell the (s)goldstino fields to realistic models such as the MSSM., Comment: 24 pages

Using the constrained superfields formalism to describe the interactions of a light goldstino to matter fields in supersymmetric models, we identify generalised, higher-order holomorphic superfield constraints that project out the superpartners and capture the non-universal couplings of the goldstino to matter fields. These arise from microscopic theories in which heavy superpartners masses are of the order of the supersymmetry breaking scale (\sqrt f). In the decoupling limit of infinite superpartners masses, these constraints reduce to the familiar, lower-order universal constraints discussed recently, that describe the universal goldstino-matter fields couplings, suppressed by inverse powers of \sqrt f. We continue a previous study of the MSSM Higgs Lagrangian extended by all effective operators of dimension d=6 that can be present beyond the MSSM, consistent with its symmetries. By supersymmetry, such operators also extend the neutralino and chargino sectors, and the corresponding component fields Lagrangian is computed onshell. The corrections to the neutralino and chargino masses, due to these operators, are computed analytically in function of the MSSM corresponding values. For individual operators, the corrections are small, of few GeV for the constrained MSSM (CMSSM) viable parameter space. We investigate the correction to the lightest Higgs mass, which receives, from individual operators, a supersymmetric correction of up to 4 (6) GeV above the 2-loop leading-log CMSSM value, from those CMSSM phase space points with: EW fine tuning Delta<200, consistent with WMAP relic density (3$\sigma$), and for a scale of the operators of M=10 (8) TeV, respectively. Applied to the CMSSM point of minimal fine tuning (Delta=18), such increase gives an upper limit $m_h=120(122)\pm 2$ GeV, respectively. The increase of m_h from individual operators can be larger ($\sim$ 10-30 GeV) for those CMSSM phase space points with Delta>200; these can now be phenomenologically viable, with reduced Delta, and this includes those points that would have otherwise violated the LEP2 bound by this value. In string models with "brane supersymmetry breaking" exponential potentials emerge at (closed-string) tree level but are not accompanied by tachyons. Potentials of this type have long been a source of embarrassment in flat space, but can have interesting implications for Cosmology. For instance, in ten dimensions the logarithmic slope |V'/V| lies precisely at a "critical" value where the Lucchin--Matarrese attractor disappears while the scalar field is \emph{forced} to climb up the potential when it emerges from the Big Bang. This type of behavior is in principle perturbative in the string coupling, persists after compactification, could have trapped scalar fields inside potential wells as a result of the cosmological evolution and could have also injected the inflationary phase of our Universe., Comment: 14 pages, LateX, 3 eps figures

Using the formalism of constrained superfields, we derive the most general effective action of a light goldstino coupled to the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and study its phenomenological consequences. The goldstino-induced couplings become important when the (hidden sector) scale of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking, $\sqrt f$, is relatively low, of the order of few TeV. In particular, we compute the Higgs potential and show that the (tree level) mass of the lightest Higgs scalar can be increased to the LEP bound for $\sqrt f\sim 2$ TeV to 7 TeV. Moreover, the effective quartic Higgs coupling is increased due to additional tree-level contributions proportional to the ratio of visible to hidden sector supersymmetry breaking scales. This increase can alleviate the amount of fine tuning of the electroweak scale that exists in the MSSM. Among the new goldstino couplings, beyond those in MSSM, the most important ones generate an invisible decay of the Higgs boson into a goldstino and neutralino (if m_h>m_{\chi_1^0}), with a partial decay rate that can be comparable to the SM channel h^0-> \gamma\gamma. A similar decay of Z boson is possible if m_Z>m_{\chi_1^0} and brings a lower bound on $\sqrt f$ that must be of about 700 GeV. Additional decay modes of the Higgs or Z bosons into a pair of light goldstinos, while possible, are suppressed by an extra 1/f factor and have no significant impact on the model., Comment: 25 pages, LaTeX, 8 figures; v3: added references

We analyze the process of string vacuum destabilization due to instanton induced superpotential couplings which depend linearly on charged fields. These non-perturbative instabilities result in potentials for the D-brane moduli and lead to processes of D-brane recombination, motion and partial moduli stabilization at the non-perturbative vacuum. By using techniques of D-brane instanton calculus, we explicitly compute this scalar potential in toroidal orbifold compactifications with magnetized D-branes by summing over the possible discrete instanton configurations. We illustrate explicitly the resulting dynamics in globally consistent models. These instabilities can have phenomenological applications to breaking hidden sector gauge groups, open string moduli stabilization and supersymmetry breaking. We investigate an extension of the MSSM Higgs sector by including the effects of all dimension-five and dimension-six effective operators and their associated supersymmetry breaking terms. The corrections to the masses of the neutral CP-even and CP-odd Higgs bosons due to the d=5 and d=6 operators are computed. When the d=5 and d=6 operators are generated by the same physics (i.e. when suppressed by powers of the same scale M), due to the relative $\tan\beta$ enhancement of the latter, which compensates their extra scale suppression (1/M), the mass corrections from d=6 operators can be comparable to those of d=5 operators, even for conservative values of the scale M. We identify the effective operators with the largest individual corrections to the lightest Higgs mass and discuss whether at the microscopic level and in the simplest cases, these operators are generated by "new physics" with a sign consistent with an increase of m_h. Simple numerical estimates easily allow an increase of m_h due to d=6 operators alone in the region of 10-30 GeV, while for a much larger increase light new states beyond MSSM may be needed, in which case the effective description is unreliable. Special attention is paid to the treatment of the effective operators with higher derivatives. These can be removed by non-linear field redefinitions or by an "unfolding" technique, which effectively ensure that any ghost degrees of freedom (of mass $\geqsim M$) are integrated out and absent in the effective theory at scales much smaller than M. Considering general coefficients of the susy operators with a scale of new physics above the LHC reach, it is possible to increase the tree-level prediction for the Higgs mass to the LEPII bound, thus alleviating the MSSM fine-tuning., Comment: 38 pages; some clarifications in Introduction and Section 5

We study the consequences of an extension of the standard model containing an invisible extra gauge group under which the SM particles are neutral. We show that effective operators, generated by loops of heavy chiral fermions charged under both gauge groups and connecting the new gauge sector to the Standard Model, can give rise to a viable dark matter candidate. Its annihilations produce clean visible signals through a gamma-ray line. We compute instantonic effects in globally consistent T^6/Z2xZ2 orientifold models with discrete torsion and magnetised D-branes. We consider fractional branes and instantons wrapping the same rigid cycles. We clarify and analyse in detail the low-energy effective action on D-branes in these models. We provide explicit examples where instantons induce linear terms in the charged fields, or non-perturbative mass terms are generated. We also find examples where the gauge theory on fractional branes has conformal symmetry at one-loop, broken by instantonic mass terms at a hierarchically small energy scale., Comment: 60 pages. In an attempt to implement gauge mediation in string theory, we study string effective supergravity models of supersymmetry breaking, containing anomalous gauge factors. We discuss subtleties related to gauge invariance and the stabilization of the Green-Schwarz moduli, which set non-trivial constraints on the transmission of supersymmetry breaking to MSSM via gauge interactions. Given those constraints, it is difficult to obtain the dominance of gauge mediation over gravity mediation. Furthermore, generically the gauge contributions to soft terms contain additional non-standard terms coming from D-term contributions. Motivated by this, we study the phenomenology of recently proposed hybrid models, where gravity and gauge mediations compete at the GUT scale, and show that such a scenario can respect WMAP constraints and would be easily testable at LHC., Comment: 40 pages, 5 figures

The origin and the implications of higher dimensional effective operators in 4-dimensional theories are discussed in non-supersymmetric and supersymmetric cases. Particular attention is paid to the role of general, derivative-dependent field redefinitions which one can employ to obtain a simpler form of the effective Lagrangian. An application is provided for the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model extended with dimension-five R-parity conserving operators, to identify the minimal irreducible set of such operators after supersymmetry breaking. Among the physical consequences of this set of operators are the presence of corrections to the MSSM Higgs sector and the generation of "wrong"-Higgs Yukawa couplings and fermion-fermion-scalar-scalar interactions. We perform a general analysis of the R-parity conserving dimension-five operators that can be present beyond the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Not all these operators are actually independent. We present a method which employs spurion-dependent field redefinitions that removes this "redundancy" and establishes the minimal, irreducible set of these dimension-five operators. Their potential effects on the MSSM Higgs sector are discussed to show that the tree level bound $m_h\leq m_Z$ cannot be easily lifted within the approximations used, and quantum corrections are still needed to satisfy the LEPII bound. An ansatz is provided for the structure of the remaining couplings in the irreducible set of D=5 operators, which avoids phenomenological constraints from flavor changing neutral currents. The minimal set of operators brings new couplings in the effective Lagrangian, notably "wrong"-Higgs Yukawa couplings and contact fermion-fermion-scalar-scalar interactions, whose effects are expected to be larger than those generated in the MSSM at loop or even tree level. We analyze N=2 (perturbative and non-perturbative) corrections to the effective theory in type I orbifold models where a dual heterotic description is available. These corrections may play an important role in phenomenological scenarios. More precisely, we consider two particular compactifications: the Bianchi-Sagnotti-Gimon-Polchinski orbifold and a freely-acting Z_2 x Z_2 orbifold with N=1 supersymmetry and gauge group SO(q) x SO(32-q). By exploiting perturbative calculations of the physical gauge couplings on the heterotic side, we obtain multi-instanton and one-loop string corrections to the K\"ahler potential and the gauge kinetic function for these models. The non-perturbative corrections appear as sums over relevant Hecke operators, whereas the one-loop correction to the K\"ahler potential matches the expression proposed in [1,2]. We argue that these corrections are universal in a given class of models where target-space modular invariance (or a subgroup of it) holds., Comment: 37 pages, 3 figures

In the recent years, phenomenological models of moduli stabilization were proposed, where the dynamics of the stabilization is essentially supersymmetric, whereas an O'Rafearthaigh supersymmetry breaking sector is responsible for the "uplift" of the cosmological constant to zero. We investigate the case where the uplift is provided by a Fayet-Iliopoulos sector. We find that in this case the modulus contribution to supersymmetry breaking is larger than in the previous models. A first consequence of this class of constructions is for gauginos, which are heavier compared to previous models. In some of our explicit examples, due to a non-standard gauge-mediation type negative contribution to scalars masses, the whole superpartner spectrum can be efficiently compressed at low-energy. We analyze a class of dual pairs of heterotic and type I models based on freely-acting $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifolds in four dimensions. Using the adiabatic argument, it is possible to calculate non-perturbative contributions to the gauge coupling threshold corrections on the type I side by exploiting perturbative calculations on the heterotic side, without the drawbacks due to twisted moduli. The instanton effects can then be combined with closed-string fluxes to stabilize most of the moduli fields of the internal manifold, and also the dilaton, in a racetrack realization of the type I model., Comment: 1+49 pages

In 4D renormalisable theories, integrating out massive states generates in the low energy effective action higher dimensional operators (derivative or otherwise). Using a superfield language it is shown that a 4D N=1 supersymmetric theory with higher derivative operators in either the Kahler or the superpotential part of the Lagrangian and with an otherwise arbitrary superpotential, is equivalent to a 4D N=1 theory of second order (i.e. without higher derivatives) with additional superfields and renormalised interactions. We provide examples where a free theory with trivial supersymmetry breaking provided by a linear superpotential becomes, in the presence of higher derivatives terms and in the second order version, a non-trivial interactive one with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. The couplings of the equivalent theory acquire a threshold correction through their dependence on the scale of the higher dimensional operator(s). The scalar potential in the second order theory is not necessarily positive definite, and one can in principle have a vanishing potential with broken supersymmetry. We provide an application to MSSM and argue that at tree-level and for a mass scale associated to a higher derivative term in the TeV range, the Higgs mass can be lifted above the current experimental limits., Comment: 36 pages; some clarifications and references added

We analyze vacuum decay in brane world setups, where a free scalar field in five dimensions has a localized potential admitting metastable vacua. We study in particular the bounce solution and its properties in flat and warped spaces. In the latter case, placing into a deeply warped region the term in the potential that lifts the vacuum degeneracy, can increase indefinitely the lifetime of the false vacuum. We argue that tachyon-free type I string vacua with supersymmetry breaking in the open sector at the string scale can be interpreted, via S and T-duality arguments, as metastable vacua of supersymmetric type I superstring. The dynamics of the process can be partially captured via nucleation of brane-antibrane pairs out of the non-supersymmetric vacuum and subsequent tachyon condensation., Comment: 15 pages. v2 refs added and minor improvements

The role of higher derivative operators in 4D effective field theories is discussed in both non-supersymmetric and supersymmetric contexts. The approach, formulated in the Minkowski space-time, shows that theories with higher derivative operators do not always have an improved UV behaviour, due to subtleties related to the analytical continuation from the Minkowski to the Euclidean metric. This continuation is further affected at the dynamical level due to a field-dependence of the poles of the Green functions of the particle-like states, for curvatures of the potential of order unity in ghost mass units. The one-loop scalar potential in lambda*phi^4 theory with a single higher derivative term is shown to have infinitely many counterterms, while for a very large mass of the ghost the usual 4D renormalisation is recovered. In the supersymmetric context of the O'Raifeartaigh model of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking with a higher derivative (supersymmetric) operator, it is found that quadratic divergences are present in the one-loop self-energy of the scalar field. They arise with a coefficient proportional to the amount of supersymmetry breaking and suppressed by the scale of the higher derivative operator. This is also true in the Wess-Zumino model with higher derivatives and explicit soft breaking of supersymmetry. We study the effect of anomalous U(1) gauge groups in string theory compactification with fluxes. We find that, in a gauge invariant formulation, consistent AdS vacua appear breaking spontaneously supergravity. Non vanishing D-terms from the anomalous symmetry act as an uplifting potential and could allow for de Sitter vacua. However, we show that in this case the gravitino is generically (but not always) much heavier than the electroweak scale. We show that alternative uplifting scheme based on corrections to the Kahler potential can be compatible with a gravitino mass in the TeV range., Comment: 20 pages, 1 figure

A detailed analysis of anomalous U(1)'s and their effective couplings is performed both in field theory and string theory. It is motivated by the possible relevance of such couplings in particle physics, as well as a potential signal distinguishing string theory from other UV options. The most general anomaly related effective action is analyzed and parameterized. It contains Stuckelberg, axionic and Chern-Simons-like couplings. It is shown that such couplings are generically non-trivial in orientifold string vacua and are not in general fixed by anomalies. A similar analysis in quantum field theories provides similar couplings. The trilinear gauge boson couplings are also calculated and their phenomenological relevance is advocated. We analyze the properties of a model with four-dimensional brane-localized Higgs type potential of a six dimensional scalar field satisfying the Dirichlet boundary condition on the boundary of a transverse two-dimensional compact space. The regularization of the localized couplings generates classical renormalization group running. A tachyonic mass parameter grows in the infrared, in analogy with the QCD gauge coupling in four dimensions. We find a phase transition at a critical value of the bare mass parameter such that the running mass parameter becomes large in the infrared precisely at the compactification scale. Below the critical coupling, the theory is in symmetric phase, whereas above it spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs. Close to the phase transition point there is a very light mode in the spectrum. The massive Kaluza-Klein spectrum at the critical coupling becomes independent of the UV cutoff., Comment: 22 pages, LaTeX

We discuss a six dimensional mass generation for the neutrinos. Active neutrinos live on a three-brane and interact via a brane localized mass term with a bulk six-dimensional standard model singlet (sterile) Weyl fermion, the two dimensions being transverse to the three-brane. We derive the physical neutrino mass spectrum and show that the active neutrino mass and Kaluza-Klein masses have a logarithmic cutoff divergence related to the zero-size limit of the three-brane in the transverse space. This translates into a renormalisation group running of the neutrino masses above the Kaluza-Klein compactification scale coming from classical effects, without any new non-singlet particles in the spectrum. For compact radii in the eV--MeV range, relevant for neutrino physics, this scenario predicts running neutrino masses which could affect, in particular, neutrinoless double beta decay experiments., Comment: 23 pages, 2 figures

Within the context of type I strings, we show the equivalence between BPS D9 branes with internal magnetic fluxes H_i in the three torii and non-BPS D3 branes with inverted internal magnetic fluxes 1/H_i. We then construct new supersymmetric examples of Z_2 x Z_2 orientifolds with discrete torsion which in the past had only non-supersymmetric solutions and emphasize the role of new twisted tadpole cancellation conditions, arising in the presence of magnetic fields, in order to get a consistent spectrum. In a second and independent part of the paper, we construct a new nine-dimensional type IIB orientifold with Scherk-Schwarz deformation which has the peculiarity of introducing a new type of non-BPS O9 planes and which contains as top branes a Scherk-Schwarz deformation of non-BPS D9 branes.The model contains charged D7 and D3 branes with a soft supersymmetry breaking spectrum., Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX, references added

Tadpoles accompany, in one form or another, all attempts to realize supersymmetry breaking in String Theory, making the present constructions at best incomplete. Whereas these tadpoles are typically large, a closer look at the problem from a perturbative viewpoint has the potential of illuminating at least some of its qualitative features in String Theory. A possible scheme to this effect was proposed long ago by Fischler and Susskind, but incorporating background redefinitions in string amplitudes in a systematic fashion has long proved very difficult. In the first part of this paper, drawing from field theory examples, we thus begin to explore what one can learn by working perturbatively in a ``wrong'' vacuum. While unnatural in Field Theory, this procedure presents evident advantages in String Theory, whose definition in curved backgrounds is mostly beyond reach at the present time. At the field theory level, we also identify and characterize some special choices of vacua where tadpole resummations terminate after a few contributions. In the second part we present a notable example where vacuum redefinitions can be dealt with to some extent at the full string level, providing some evidence for a new link between IIB and 0B orientifolds. We finally show that NS-NS tadpoles do not manifest themselves to lowest order in certain classes of string constructions with broken supersymmetry and parallel branes, including brane-antibrane pairs and brane supersymmetry breaking models, that therefore have UV finite threshold corrections at one loop., Comment: 51 pages, LaTeX, 7 eps figures. Theoretical and phenomenological implications of R-parity violation in supersymmetric theories are discussed in the context of particle physics and cosmology. Fundamental aspects include the relation with continuous and discrete symmetries and the various allowed patterns of R-parity breaking. Recent developments on the generation of neutrino masses and mixings within different scenarios of R-parity violation are discussed. The possible contribution of R-parity-violating Yukawa couplings in processes involving virtual supersymmetric particles and the resulting constraints are reviewed. It is well-known that Scherk-Schwarz compactifications in string theory have a tachyon in the closed string spectrum appearing for a critical value of a compact radius. The tachyon can be removed by an appropriate orientifold projection in type II strings, giving rise to tachyon-free compactifications. We present explicit examples of this type in various dimensions, including six and four-dimensional chiral examples, with softly broken supersymmetry in the closed sector and non-BPS configurations in the open sector. These vacua are interesting frameworks for studying various cosmological issues. We propose, within a perturbative string theory example, a cosmological way to generate a large hierarchy between the observed Planck mass and the fundamental string scale. Time evolution results in three large space dimensions, one additional dimension transverse to our world and five small internal dimensions with a very slow time evolution. The evolution of the string coupling and internal space generate a large Planck mass. We investigate maximally symmetric backgrounds in nonsupersymmetric string vacua with D-branes and O-planes localized in the compact space. We find a class of solutions with a perturbative string coupling constant in all regions of spacetime. Depending on the particular model, we find either a time evolution with a big-bang type singularity or a space dependent background with generically orbifold singularities. We show that the result can be interpreted as a supersymmetric bulk with some symmetries broken by the boundaries. We study the dynamics of type I strings on Melvin backgrounds, with a single or multiple twisted two-planes. We construct two inequivalent types of orientifold models that correspond to (non-compact) irrational versions of Scherk-Schwarz type breaking of supersymmetry. In the first class of vacua, D-branes and O-planes are no longer localized in space-time but are smeared along the compact Melvin coordinate with a characteristic profile. On the other hand, the second class of orientifolds involves O-planes and D-branes that are both rotated by an angle proportional to the twist. In case of ``multiple Melvin spaces'', some amount of supersymmetry is recovered if the planes are twisted appropriately and part of the original O-planes are transmuted into new ones. We determine the consistent D-brane configurations in type II nonsupersymmetric Melvin Background. The D-branes are analysed from three complementary points of view: the effective Born-Infeld action, the open string partition function and the boundary state approach. We show the agreement of the results obtained by the three different approaches. Among the surprising features is the existence of supersymmetric branes, some of them having a quasi-periodic direction. We also discuss the generalisation to backgrounds with several magnetic fields, some of them preserving in the closed and the open spectra some amount of supersymmetry. The case of rational magnetic flux, equivalent to freely-acting noncompact orbifolds, is also studied. It allows more possibilities of consistent D-brane configurations., Comment: 24 pages

We describe how the D-brane spectra of the various ten-dimensional string theories can be related to general properties of the open-closed duality, encoded in the $S$ and $P$ matrices of the conformal field theory. We also complete the classification and the description of non-BPS branes in these string theories, elucidating their non-Abelian structures and the nature of the corresponding super-Higgs mechanisms. We find that the type 0 theories and their orientifolds have two types of uncharged branes, distinguished by their couplings to the closed string tachyon. We also find that the 0A orientifold has the unusual feature of having charged and uncharged branes with identical world-volume dimensions. The massless spectrum of the ten dimensional USp(32) type I string has an N=1 supergravity multiplet coupled to non-supersymmetric matter. This raises the question of the consistency of the gravitino interactions. We resolve this apparent puzzle by arguing for the existence of a local supersymmetry which is non-linearly realised in the open sector. We determine the leading order low energy effective Lagrangian. Similar results are expected to apply to lower dimensional type I models where supergravity is coupled to non-supersymmetric branes., Comment: 12 pages, references added

We determine all D-branes in the non-tachyonic 0'B orientifold, examine their world-volume anomalies and study orbifold compactifications. We find that the spectrum of the D-branes contains chiral fermions in the symmetric, antisymmetric and fundamental representations of (unitary) gauge groups on the branes. The cancellation of the world-volume anomalies requires Wess-Zumino terms which we determine explicitly. We examine a non-tachyonic compactification to 9D whose closed part interpolates between 0B and IIB and revisit compactifications on orbifolds. The D3-brane allows to conjecture, via the AdS/CFT correspondence, a supergravity dual to a non-supersymmetric and infrared-free gauge theory. In the presence of internal magnetic fields, a D9 brane can acquire a D5 (or anti-D5) R-R charge, and can therefore contribute to the corresponding tadpole. In the resulting vacua, supersymmetry is generically broken and tachyonic instabilities are present. However, suitable choices for the magnetic fields, corresponding to self-dual configurations in the internal space, can yield new chiral supersymmetric vacua with gauge groups of reduced rank, where the magnetic energy saturates, partly or fully, the negative tension of the O5+ planes. The tachyon-free nonsupersymmetric string theories in ten dimensions have dilaton tadpoles which forbid a Minkowski vacuum. We determine the maximally symmetric backgrounds for the $USp(32)$ Type I string and the $SO(16)\times SO(16)$ heterotic string. The static solutions exhibit nine dimensional Poincar\'e symmetry and have finite 9D Planck and Yang-Mills constants. The low energy geometry is given by a ten dimensional manifold with two boundaries separated by a finite distance which suggests a spontaneous compactification of the ten dimensional string theory., Comment: 13 pages

We show how chiral type I models whose tadpole conditions have no supersymmetric solution can be consistently defined introducing antibranes with non-supersymmetric world volumes. At tree level, the resulting stable non-BPS configurations correspond to tachyon-free spectra, where supersymmetry is broken at the string scale on some (anti)branes but is exact in the bulk, and can be further deformed by the addition of brane-antibrane pairs of the same type. As a result, a scalar potential is generated, that can stabilize some radii of the compact space. We consider, in a string theory framework, physical processes of phenomenological interest in models with a low string scale. The amplitudes we study involve tree-level virtual gravitational exchange, divergent in a field-theoretical treatment, and massive gravitons emission, which are the main signatures of this class of models. First, we discuss the regularization of summations appearing in virtual gravitational (closed string) Kaluza-Klein exchanges in Type I strings. We argue that a convenient manifestly ultraviolet convergent low energy limit of type I string theory is given by an effective field theory with an arbitrary cutoff $\Lambda$ in the closed (gravitational) channel and a related cutoff $M_s^2/\Lambda$ in the open (Yang-Mills) channel. We find the leading string corrections to the field theory results. We show how to construct chiral tachyon-free perturbative orientifold models, where supersymmetry is broken at the string scale on a collection of branes while, to lowest order, the bulk and the other branes are supersymmetric. In higher orders, supersymmetry breaking is mediated to the remaining sectors, but is suppressed by the size of the transverse space or by the distance from the brane where supersymmetry breaking primarily occurred. This setting is of interest for orbifold models with discrete torsion, and is of direct relevance for low-scale string models. It can guarantee the stability of the gauge hierarchy against gravitational radiative corrections, allowing an almost exact supergravity a millimeter away from a non-supersymmetric world., Comment: 15 pages, LaTeX

We discuss Z_2 \times Z_2 orientifolds where the orbifold twists are accompanied by shifts on momentum or winding lattice states. The models contain variable numbers of D5 branes, whose massless (and, at times, even massive) modes have variable numbers of supersymmetries. We display new type-I models with partial supersymmetry breaking N=2 \to N=1, N=4 \to N=1 and N=4 \to N=2. The geometry of these models is rather rich: the shift operations create brane multiplets related by orbifold transformations that support gauge groups of reduced rank. We compute threshold effects to gauge couplings in four-dimensional $Z_N$ orientifold models of type I strings with ${\cal N}=2$ and ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry, and study their dependence on the geometric moduli. We also compute the tree-level (disk) couplings of the open sector gauge fields to the twisted closed string moduli of the orbifold in various models and study their effects and that of the one-loop threshold corrections on gauge coupling unification. We study total and partial supersymmetry breaking by freely acting orbifolds, or equivalently by Scherk-Schwarz compactifications, in type I string theory. In particular, we describe a four-dimensional chiral compactification with spontaneously broken N=1 supersymmetry, some models with partial $N=4\to N=2$ and $N=4\to N=1$ supersymmetry breaking and their heterotic and M-theory duals. A generic feature of these models is that in the gravitational sector and in the spectrum of D-branes parallel to the breaking coordinate, all mass splittings are proportional to the compactification scale, while global (extended) supersymmetry remains unbroken at tree level for the massless excitations of D-branes transverse to the breaking direction., Comment: 28 pages, LaTeX, typos corrected
