Il ragionamento covariazionale è alla base di molta matematica e ha improntato tutta la rivoluzione scientifica. Cogliere le relazioni tra grandezze ed esprimerle secondo leggi matematiche ha permesso infatti, da un lato di indagare il linguaggio della natura e di formulare le sue leggi, e dall’altro di sviluppare la matematica in modo da rendere possibile tale formulazione in forma efficiente e produttiva. La sua comprensione e conoscenza è quindi una meta educativa importante nell’apprendimento matematico e scientifico: contrariamente a quanto pensano alcuni, essa va preparata fin dai primi gradi scolastici proponendo opportuni esempi e situazioni didattiche, che permettano di affinarla via via, conquistandone una crescente consapevolezza con gli allievi e le allieve. Questo è quanto si afferma perlomeno a livello di ricerca didattica. Ma purtroppo la letteratura in merito è sviluppata nel suo linguaggio specialistico, per giunta è quasi esclusivamente in inglese e quindi può risultare di non facile lettura per il non addetto ai lavori. D’altra parte, tranne qualche rarissima eccezione, il ragionamento covariazionale brilla per la sua assenza in tutti i libri di testo italiani. Mancano quindi esempi facilmente accessibili ai nostri insegnanti [...]. Il libro si propone di ovviare agli inconvenienti qui accennati. Infatti, è scritto in un linguaggio accessibile e contiene una sequenza di concrete proposte didattiche che mirano a sviluppare negli allievi e nelle allieve il ragionamento covariazionale in forme adeguate dalla scuola primaria alla secondaria di II grado, rendendone espliciti i vari contenuti e passaggi didattici. Parallelamente alle proposte didattiche, entra però anche nelle componenti teoriche principali di tali ragionamenti in forma piana, comprensibile e nello stesso tempo concreta e teoricamente fondata.

The importance of good mastery of specialised mathematics knowledge for mathematics teachers and prospective teachers is now recognised internationally. This paper presents an exploratory study aimed at investigating how mathematics education courses affect the Mathematics Teachers’ Specialised Knowledge (MTSK) of prospective primary teachers. A questionnaire was administered to a sample of 118 future teachers, and an analysis of their answers was carried out with the MTSK model. The research highlights positive feedback on the effectiveness of the mathematics education laboratory that was staged, and provides an outline of the beliefs and the knowledge of the prospective teachers., La importancia de un buen dominio del conocimiento matemático especializado para los futuros profesores de matemáticas está aceptada internacionalmente. Este artículo presenta un estudio exploratorio destinado a investigar cómo los cursos de educación matemática afectan el Conocimiento Especializado de Profesor de Matemáticas (MTSK) de futuros profesores de educación primaria. Se administró un cuestionario a una muestra de 118 futuros profesores y se analizaron sus respuestas con el modelo MTSK. La investigación pone de relieve los comentarios positivos sobre la eficacia del laboratorio de enseñanza de las matemáticas que se puso en marcha, y permite realizar un esbozo de las creencias y los conocimientos de los futuros profesores.

International audience; In this work we show the use of the INVALSI database as an instrument to collect organized data from national standardized tests in order to study students’ mathematical thinking on a large scale. It allows us to create appropriate correlations to single out the behavior of the students relative to a specific mathematical topic or a cognitive issue. In this study we have used the INVALSI database to study how grade 10 students work with powers in the domain of algebra. We analyze the quantitative data within a semiotic theoretical framework. Analyzing items taken from the INVALSI tests we are able to single out a general behavior that involves a population of Italian students and that persists in time. We interpret the results within our theoretical framework, thereby giving a quantitative validation to a theoretical perspective that has been proven consistent by qualitative investigations.

This paper refers to a survey carried out as part of the research activities of FAMT&L Comenius project conducted at the University of Bologna. This project aims to promote the correct use of formative assessment in mathematics education for students aged from 11 to16. Inorder to reach this goal, we are working to design training programs (in-service and later pre-service) for teachers of mathematics, starting from identificating their needs. The initial investigation is carried out to investigate their beliefs, expectations and especially the actual use of formative assessment in the classroom. This is why school students has also being involved in the Project as "Associated Partners". This paper focuses in particular on the investigation of the assessment tools used in the classroom. In fact students has been asked to express their opinion on the usefulness of some of the most common tools they know, even testing the actual use of it in the classroom. An early and limited analysis of data collected through questionnaires opens the way for many other ideas for following analysis and reflections, and indicates a number of directions to be followed in the later phases of the research., Ricerche di Pedagogia e Didattica. Nella formazione degli insegnanti, l’uso di specifiche tecnologie quali la videoregistrazione delle pratiche didattiche e valutative in classe (e la relativa analisi sistematica delle situazioni filmate) può costituire un mezzo importante per l’efficacia della formazione, iniziale e in servizio, dei docenti. In questo articolo vengono presentati processi e primi risultati di un’esperienza di ricerca finalizzata a controllare l’influenza della videoanalisi sul progressivo sviluppo di alcuni importanti aspetti della competenza valutativa degli insegnanti. La ricerca – realizzata attraverso un disegno pre-sperimentale – ha coinvolto un gruppo di insegnanti di matematica delle scuole secondarie e ha consentito di osservare l’incidenza della videoanalisi sull’evoluzione di indicatori di competenza dei docenti quali la loro percezione di conoscenza e abilità sul formative assessment, le loro convinzioni e il loro senso di autoefficacia. The actions of designation, description, denotation, denomination and definition are crucial in the didactic activity in the classroom (D'Amore and Fandiño Pinilla, 2012) since they embody different interplays between objects, representations, properties, names (in the sense of Duval (2008)). Switching from one action to the other may be the result of a conceptual change (diSessa, 2006). We present the result of a teaching experiment in classes of grades from 2 to 4 where the relation object/name is investigated in the case of the circle. The experiment makes use of a particular artefact, the Lénárt Spheres (Lénárt, 1996). Comparative geometry activities allow to deal with geometrical objects in a learning environment where the relations between objects, representations and properties are different from the usual ones, hence implying a restructuration of the interplays between them. As a result of the teaching experiment, as can be seen, in particular, from the comparison of initial and conclusive questionnaires, children started a change of their way of associating a name to an object. We argue that this is due also to a conceptual change and not only to “learning what was taught”.

L’oggetto di questa tesi è un fenomeno didattico osservato in due valutazioni standardizzate nazionali INVALSI, legato all’atteggiamento degli studenti mentre svolgono task di matematica. L’effetto, che abbiamo denotato effetto “età della Terra”, è stato interpretato in questa ricerca attraverso l’interazione e il confronto di diversi costrutti teorici che spiegano come questo effetto, che può essere considerato come una tipica situazione di contratto didattico, è generato dalla relazione studente-insegnante ma può diventare più strettamente legato al rapporto che hanno gli studenti con la matematica. Inizialmente abbiamo condotto uno studio dei risultati statistici delle valutazioni standardizzate nazionali (Rash Analysis). Il primo step della sperimentazione è consistito nella preparazione, validazione e somministrazione di 612 questionari a studenti di diversi livelli scolastici e basandoci sui risultati dei questionari abbiamo condotto interviste di gruppo. L’analisi quantitativa e qualitativa dei risultati ha confermato la presenza dell’effetto “età della Terra” e ha mostrato che questo effetto è indipendente dal livello scolastico e dall’età degli studenti, dal contenuto matematico e dal contesto dei task proposti. La seconda parte della ricerca è stata volta ad indagare la cause di questo effetto. Abbiamo infatti individuato un principio regolativo che condizione l’azione degli studenti mentre fanno attività matematica e abbiamo condotto molte interviste individuali per indagarlo. Il comportamento degli studenti intervistati è stato così studiato e classificato con i costrutti del quadro teorico., The object of this thesis is a didactic phenomenon observed firstly in two national standardized assessments, related to students' behaviour in performing a mathematical task. The effect, that we denote “The age of the Earth effect” is interpreted in this research throught the comparison and the interactions of different theoretical constructs, which explain how an effect, which stems in the teacher-student relation and can be described as a typical didactic contract situation, may become something affecting the relationship between the student and mathematics. We firstly conducted a study of the statistical results of the national assessment (Rasch Analysis). Then, the first step of our experimental design consisted of the preparation, the testing and the administration of 612 questionnaires to students of different school grades. Based on the results of these questionnaires, we conducted group interviews. This qualitative and quantitative experimentation confirmed the presence of the effect and showed that this effect is independent from the age of the students, the school level, the context of the task and the mathematical content. A second part of the research was devoted to investigate a possible cause of this effect. We individuated a regulative principle conditionating the action of the pupils and we conducted many individual interviews in order to study it. We classified the behaviuors of the students with the theoretical constructs of our framework.

The main aim of this paper is theoretical and methodological: to show how The Antropological Theory of the Didactics – in particular, the construction of a praxeological reference model – can be used as a foundation for developing a diagnostic test tool which examines students technical and theoretical knowledge of basic algebra (and related arithmetical knowledge on which initial algebra is based). The point is to provide explicit control on what is being tested, for instance, in relation to a given national curriculum, and in relation to teaching interventions.

In this study, we investigate how students undertaking an elective programming course experience the connection between programming and mathematics. Based on stimulated recall interviews with six Grade 8 students who have solved test items from PISA 2003, we identify various experiences among the students regarding how they draw on programming skills in mathematics and vice versa. We propose that three findings, in particular, are worthy of further discussion and investigation: the way some experience programming as a context for mathematics and mathematics as a context for programming; the challenges that follow from how some students assert that programming and mathematics complement each other while others struggle to see a connection; and, perhaps the most important, the way in which the students report that experiences from programming have equipped them with skills such as being systematic and exact, which they find they need in mathematics.
