Objetivo: Describir y evaluar los resultados de la angioplastia con stent ductal en un único centro de alta complejidad durante el periodo 2016-2022. Método: Estudio descriptivo retrospectivo de corte transversal en el que se incluyeron pacientes menores de 3 meses a quienes se implantó un stent en el conducto arterioso como tratamiento paliativo inicial. Se recolectaron datos demográficos, clínicos y anatómicos previos a la intervención. Se registraron la mortalidad, las complicaciones intra- y posprocedimiento, la necesidad de reintervención, los requerimientos de cuidados intensivos y la estadía hospitalaria. Se describen las características al momento de la cirugía definitiva. Las variables discretas son presentadas con porcentajes, y las variables continuas con sus medianas y sus respectivos intervalos intercuartílicos. Resultados: Se revisaron 20 pacientes que habían recibido este tratamiento y se evidenció una tasa de éxito del 80%. Las complicaciones por disfunción del stent requirieron resolución quirúrgica. Egresaron de la institución el 95% de los pacientes luego del procedimiento y lograron arribar a un segundo estadio quirúrgico definitivo 17 pacientes. Fallecieron tres pacientes luego del procedimiento, pero sin relación directa con este. Conclusiones: Las indicaciones de angioplastia del conducto con stent como tratamiento alternativo a la realización de una anastomosis sistémico-pulmonar por cirugía todavía no están completamente definidas; la estrategia constituye una alternativa válida en pacientes adecuadamente seleccionados. La experiencia presentada muestra resultados similares a los de otros centros de referencia internacional.

Background. Ardisia compressa Kunth, is a wild species native from tropical evergreen forests of Mexico, it produces fruits with phytochemical, ecological and dietary potencial. Its fruits are appreciated by people from local communities. However, in Mexico there are no studies that allow knowing the state of its phenotypic diversity. Objective. Characterize the morphological diversity of A. compressa populations from Chiapas state, Mexico. Methodology. Ninety individuals of nine wild populations of A. compressa were evaluated using 45 morphological traits (16 qualitative and 29 quantitative). The qualitative data were subjected to descriptive analysis and quantitative data were used in an analysis of variance (ANOVA) and finally the qualitative and quantitative data were analyzed simultaneously by means of a multivariate analysis with the Ward-MLM Method. Results. The qualitative traits showed phenotypic variability in the characteristics of leaf and fruit color. The quantitative data showed significant differences (P≤ 0.05) in all traits evaluated. The results of the principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (UPGMA) grouped the populations into three morphological groups differentiated by the similarity of the morphological traits of the populations and not by their geographical origin. Implications. The results in this study should be considered to implementing strategies of plant production and conservation of A. compressa. Conclusion. A wide phenotypic variability was found organized into three morphological groups defined base on characteristics of tree height, number of fruits, number of flowers and ratio of length to thickness leaf. The quantitative traits allowed us to observe the greatest morphological variability in the populations of A. compressa.

Renowned for their role in haemostasis and thrombosis, platelets are also increasingly recognized for their contribution in innate immunity, immunothrombosis and inflammatory diseases. Platelets express a wide range of receptors, which allows them to reach a variety of activation endpoints and grants them immunomodulatory functions. Activated platelets release extracellular vesicles (PEVs), whose formation and molecular cargo has been shown to depend on receptor‐mediated activation and environmental cues. This study compared the immunomodulatory profiles of PEVs generated via activation of platelets by different receptors, glycoprotein VI, C‐type lectin‐like receptor 2 and combining all thrombin‐collagen receptors. Functional assays in vivo in zebrafish and in vitro in human macrophages highlighted distinct homing and secretory responses triggered by the PEVs. In contrast, omics analyses of protein and miRNA cargo combined with physicochemical particle characterization found only subtle differences between the activated PEV types, which were insufficient to predict their different immunomodulatory functions. In contrast, constitutively released PEVs, formed in the absence of an exogenous activator, displayed a distinct immunomodulatory profile from the receptor‐induced PEVs. Our findings underscore that PEVs are tunable through receptor‐mediated activation. To truly comprehend their role(s) in mediating platelet functions among immune cells, conducting functional assays is imperative. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: of the study was to examine the validity of the Army Combat Fitness Test tests on a sample of air defense personnel in the Ukrainian Ground Forces. Material and methods. The respondents to this study were 271 air defense servicemen of the ground forces aged 18 to 40 years (73 cadets of the Ivan Kozhedub Kharkiv National Air Force University and 198 military personnel). The structural validity was evaluated using a confirmatory factor analysis. Results. Compliance was achieved with the two-factor model obtained in the course of exploratory factor analysis, as evidenced by the following indixes: χ2 (8, Critical N = 465.29) = 10.43; χ2 / df = 1.303; Non-Normed Fit Index = 0.98; Normed Fit Index = 0.97; Root Mean Square Error of Approximation = 0.035 (90 Percent Confidence Interval for Root Mean Square Error of Approximation = (0.0; 0.088), Comparative Fit Index = 0.99. In addition, all factor loadings were statistically significant at the p < 0.01 level, that indicates that these two factors were well designed at every stage. Correlation between factors was weak, which confirms the discriminant validity of the test. The significant correlation found between the items and the overall test score confirmed the validity of the test. Conclusions. It was found that Army Combat Fitness Test is a suitable tool for evaluating the physical fitness condition of air defense personnel into the Ground Forces. The dilemmas about the possible use of Army Combat Fitness Test for all age groups of military personnel regardless of gender require further study.

Hazard assessment is the first step in evaluating the potential adverse effects of chemicals. Traditionally, toxicological assessment has focused on the exposure, overlooking the impact of the exposed system on the observed toxicity. However, systems toxicology emphasizes how system properties significantly contribute to the observed response. Hence, systems theory states that interactions store more information than individual elements, leading to the adoption of network based models to represent complex systems in many fields of life sciences. Here, they develop a network‐based approach to characterize toxicological responses in the context of a biological system, inferring biological system specific networks. They directly link molecular alterations to the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) framework, establishing direct connections between omics data and toxicologically relevant phenotypic events. They apply this framework to a dataset including 31 engineered nanomaterials with different physicochemical properties in two different in vitro and one in vivo models and demonstrate how the biological system is the driving force of the observed response. This work highlights the potential of network‐based methods to significantly improve their understanding of toxicological mechanisms from a systems biology perspective and provides relevant considerations and future data‐driven approaches for the hazard assessment of nanomaterials and other advanced materials. La crisis mundial desatada por la pandemia de coronavirus redefinió la modalidad de atención en salud y así también en cirugía. La Cirugía Mayor Ambulatoria se estaba desarrollando como una modalidad de trabajo que resultaba eficiente al sistema de salud, pero no lograba ponerse en el centro de la escena. En este momento, parece ser el modelo ideal para evitar las infecciones por Covid-19 y ante esta oportunidad, potenciar su desarrollo de manera definitiva. El Servicio de Cirugía General del hospital de Clínicas Nicolás Avellaneda de Tucumán, presenta una unidad de CMA integrada con amplia experiencia la cual sirvió como soporte para dar respuesta a la necesidad de resolver las listas de espera quirúrgica, evitar que patologías simples progresaran a complicadas, trabajar con bajos costos y minimizar riesgo de contagios durante el periodo de pandemia en nuestra provincia. Presentamos los pasos y las precauciones tomados para rediseñar y adaptar la modalidad diaria de trabajo.

Hydrocarbon contamination cause serious environmental damage and human health problems, therefore, to resolve this problem has been proposed diversely remediation techniques friendly with the environment i.e. bioaugmentation, biostimulation, natural attenuation and phytoremediation. Among options, the phytoremediation causes minimum alterations to soil, low cost, it has proved good efficiency and gained public acceptation. In the present study, the capacity of Mimosa pigra to restore a contaminated soil with both anthracene and phenanthrene was evaluated, along with the soil physicochemical changes due to both plant and contaminant presence in the soil. A silt-loam contaminated soil with 100 mg kg-1 (dry weight) anthracene and 200 mg kg-1 (dry weight) phenanthrene was used in all three treatments: Contaminated soil with M. pigra (C1), contaminated soil without M. pigra (C2), and not contaminated soil with M. pigra (C0) as control. After 70 days of experimentation both biomass and height of M. pigra was not affected due to soil contaminants. There was no difference among treatments for some physicochemical characteristics e.g. soil pH, electrolytic conductivity, soil-texture, and total nitrogen content throughout the experiment. M. pigra increased the soil water holding capacity after 50 and 70 days of the experiment, however, total organic carbon content was lower after 70 days compared to the control treatment. The higher contaminant removal rate was before 7 days of experimentation for all treatments. Anthracene and phenanthrene content were lower in treatments with the presence of M. pigra: 92% of phenanthrene and 80% of anthracene were removed in C1 while nearly 77% of phenanthrene and 60% of anthracene were removed in C2. This suggest a greater removal of contaminants using M. pigra. Total removal of contaminants was not achieved. However, M. pigra was able to accumulate both compounds, showing the M. pigra capability for bioremediation use in contaminated soils.

Water infiltration through coal stocks exposed to weather elements represents a key issue for many old mining sites and coal-fired power plants from the environmental point of view, considering the negative impact on human health of the deriving groundwater, soil and air pollution. Within this context, the paper investigates the hydraulic behaviour of a self-weight compacted unsaturated coal mass and its impact on the numerical prediction of infiltration induced by rainfall events. In particular, the work focuses on the experimental investigation carried out at different representative scales, from the grain scale to physical modelling. The material, when starting from uncompacted conditions, seems to be characterized by metastable structure, which tends to collapse under imbibition. In addition, direct numerical predictions of the seepage regime through a partially saturated coal mass have been performed. As the compaction of the coal stock induced by dozers has not been taken into account, the numerical simulations represent a conservative approach for the assessment of chemical pollution hazard associated to water infiltration into a real stockpile under operational conditions.

This work was conducted with the objective to evaluate the effect of vermicompost application on chemical characteristics, energetic parameters and amino acids profile of hybrid race corn grain cultivated under open-field and rained conditions. The experiment was accomplished under a randomized complete design with three repetitions. Three treatments were evaluated: 1) Maize after inoculation with a commercial mycorrhizal arbuscular fungi mixture (Tec Myc 60®) plus vermicompost (V+M); vermicompost (V) and chemical fertilization (CF). Starch content in grain was 1.9% higher in V+M treatment in comparison with chemical, whereas crude protein, ether extract, crude fiber, acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber, total phosphorous and phytic phosphorous were not different between treatments. Energetic parameters were not different between three treatments. 17 amino acids were evaluated of wich only tryptophan, leucine, valine, histidine and aspartic acid were higher in CF and V treatments in comparison with V+M treatment. In conclusion, it is possible to cultivate maize using vermicompost as fertilizer because chemical characteristics, energetic parameters and amino acids profile in maize grain were not affected compared with the maize cultivated with vermicompost added with biofertilizers (V+M) or with corn cultivated with chemical fertilizers (CF).

The use of phytonanoparticles in agriculture could decrease the use of fertilizers and therefore decrease soil contamination, due to their size being better assimilated in plants. It is important to mention that the nanofertilizer is slow-releasing and improves plant physiological properties and various nutritional parameters. The influence of soil and foliar applications of phytonanoparticles of ZnO with the Moringa oleifera extract under three concentrations (25, 50, and 100 ppm) was evaluated on the cherry tomato crop (Solanum lycopersicum L.). Synthesis of the phytonanoparticles was analyzed with ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and infrared transmission spectroscopy with Fourier transform (FT-IR), as well as the analysis with the dynamic light scattering (DLS) technique. The morphometric parameters were evaluated before and after the application of the nanoparticles. The minerals’ content of fruits was done 95 days after planting. Results showed that soil application was better at a concentration of 25 ppm of phytonanoparticles since it allowed the greatest number of flowers and fruits on the plant; however, it was demonstrated that when performing a foliar application, the fruit showed the highest concentrations for the elements Mg, Ca, and Na at concentrations of 511, 4589, and 223 mg kg−1, respectively.

The green iguana appears to be a carrier for bacteria causing gastrointestinal infections in humans. The presence of diarrheagenic E. coli (DEC) pathotypes, however, has not been studied in this reptile. The aim of the current work was to investigate the prevalence of DEC in the intestines of 240 captive green iguanas, their phylogenetic groups, and the antibiotic susceptibility profile. E. coli strains were isolated from 41.7% (N = 100/240) of the intestinal content of green iguanas. DEC strains was identified in 25.9% of the screened population and were detected in the majority (62%, p = 0.009) of those reptiles carrying E. coli strains. Among DEC strains, STEC strains carrying the stx1 gene were the most prevalent pathotype isolated (38.7%), followed by EAEC and ETEC (27.4% each). Genetic markers of DEC strains belonging to the EHEC pathotype were not detected. More than a half of DEC strains were classified into the Clade I-II phylogroup (64.5%), followed by the phylogroup A (14.5%). The antibiotic susceptibility method demonstrated that a high proportion of DEC strains were resistance, or non-susceptible, to carbenicillin, amikacin, and ampicillin. We conclude that the green iguana kept in captivity is a carrier of DEC strains bearing resistance to first-line antibiotics, including penicillins. Given the increase presence of the green iguana in Latin American households, these reptiles represent a potential source of transmission to susceptible humans and therefore a potential source of gastrointestinal disease.

The carrot is considered a model system in plant cell culture. Spray drying represents a widely used technology to preserve microorganisms, such as bacteria and yeasts. In germplasm conservation, the most used methods are freeze drying and cryopreservation. Therefore, the aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of spray drying on the viability and totipotency of somatic carrot cells. Leaf, root and stem explants were evaluated to induce callus with 2 mg/L of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Calli obtained from the stem were cultivated in a liquid medium with 1 mg/L of 2,4-D. Cell suspensions were spray dried with maltodextrin-gum Arabic and maltodextrin-xanthan gum mixtures, two outlet air temperatures (50 and 60 °C) and 120 °C inlet air temperature. Results showed that carrot cells were viable after spray drying, and this viability remained for six months at 8 °C. The totipotency of the microencapsulated cells was proven. Cells that were not spray dried regenerated 24.6 plantlets, while the spray dried cells regenerated 19 plantlets for each gram of rehydrated powder. Thus, spray drying allowed researchers to obtain viable and totipotent cells. This work is the first manuscript that reported the spray drying of plant somatic cells.

Moringa oleifera is a highly versatile plant with potential use in the agro-food and biochemical industry. The goals of this study were to evaluate the effect of chemical fertilization and vermicompost on plant growth, and to analyze the metabolomic profile of M. oleifera crops cultivated over agricultural and native soils. The extracts were obtained from 90-day-old leaves via extraction with a hydroalcoholic mixture. Multivariate data analyses, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), were used to differentiate the distribution of leaf metabolites according to the soils or types of fertilizers used for the cultivation of Moringa oleifera. The results indicated that there was no significant effect on parameters such as plant height, root length and dry weight of leaves (p < 0.05). UPLC-ESI-MS/MS analysis of leaf extracts revealed a wide range of flavonoids, alkaloids and organic acids. The results of PCA and PLS-DA confirmed that the type of fertilizer had an effect on the metabolomic profile of M. oleifera leaves. The application of vermicompost induced changes in the metabolomic profile, but not in the morphometric variables of Moringa oleifera. These results are important for metabolite production via organic cultures and over different soil types in the industrialization of Moringa.

G(M1)-gangliosidosis is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by a deficiency of beta-galactosidase (GLB1). The GLB1 gene gives rise to the GLB1 lysosomal enzyme and to the elastin binding protein (EBP), involved in elastic fiber deposition. GLB1 forms a complex with protective protein cathepsin A (PPCA), alpha neuraminidase (NEU1), and galactosamine 6-sulphate sulfatase (GALNS) inside lysosomes, while EBP binds to PPCA and NEU1 on the cell surface. We investigated the function of the GLB1 and EBP mutated proteins by analyzing the clinical, genetic, and cellular data of 11 G(M1)-gangliosidosis patients. Their molecular analysis, followed by expression studies, lead to the identification of four new and 10 known GLB1 mutations. Some common amino acid substitutions [c.1445G>A (p.Arg482H), c.622C>T (p.Arg208His), c.175C>T (p.Arg59Cys) and c.176G>A (p.Arg59His)] were present in the GLB1 enzyme of several patients, all of Mediterranean origin, suggesting a common origin. Western blotting analyses against GLB1, EBP, and PPCA proteins showed that the identified mutations affect GLB1 enzyme activity and/or stability. The c.1445G>A (p.Arg482His), c.175C>T (p.Arg59Cys), c.733+2T>C, c.1736G>A (p.Gly579Asp), and c.1051C>T (p.Arg351X) GLB1 mutations, affect the stabilization of PPCA probably because they hamper the interaction between GLB1/EBP and PPCA within the multiprotein complex. The amount of EBP was normal, but the detection of impaired elastogenesis in such patients suggests an alteration in its function. We conclude that the presence of genetic lesions in both GLB1 and EBP coding region does not directly predict impaired elastogenesis and that elastic fiber assembly has to be evaluated specifically in each case. Nevertheless, the degree of EBP involvement may be linked to specific clinical findings.

El objetivo fue evaluar las propiedades físicas del suelo bajo diferentes sistemas de labranzas y secuencias de cultivos en un Argiudol Ácuico de Corrientes, a fin de obtener indicadores de calidad. El diseño fue de parcelas completamente aleatorizadas en arreglo factorial (3x4), donde los factores fueron: • Sistemas de labranzas, con tres niveles: convencional (LC), reducida (LR) y siembra directa (SD); y • Secuencias de cultivos, con cuatro niveles: maíz-avena (M-Av), maíz-descanso (M-D), algodón-avena (A-Av) y algodón-descanso (A-D). Los tratamientos fueron 12, con 4 repeticiones y 48 unidades experimentales. En la siembra de maíz y algodón, del cuarto ciclo productivo, se determinó densidad aparente (Da), estabilidad de agregados (EA), Infiltración (Ib) y resistencia mecánica a la penetración (RMP), en condiciones de capacidad de campo (CC). Se aplicó análisis de la varianza con la prueba de Duncan. La RMP fue 0,27 MPa en superficie para SD respecto de LR y LC (0,18 MPa), en cambio en profundidad se revirtió la situación, 0,9 MPa en SD y 1,17 MPa para LC (α ≤ 0,05). La EA fue 68,3% en SD; 54,8% en LR y 49,5% en LC (α ≤ 0,05). También aumentó la infiltración bajo SD (2,9 cm h-1), seguidos por LR y LC (α ≤ 0,05). Los atributos que podrían indicar calidad de suelo serían: a) La RMP disminuyó por el laboreo del suelo en superficie, con LC y LR, pero presentó la mejores condiciones bajo SD en profundidad; b) Las rotaciones que finalizaron con algodón tuvieron menor RMP (7-20 cm) que con cultivos de maíz; c) La EA y la Ib presentaron los mayores valores en SD. Las prácticas que favorecieron la EA colaboraron a una mayor Ib e implicaría una menor escorrentía y erosión hídrica; d) La SD presentó las variaciones más favorables para mantener la calidad del suelo.
