Our research has shown that Goasseac’h mound of Carhaix-Plouguer is the ruin of a Neolithic cairn, constructed almost entirely of dry stone. The exact dimensions of the monument are still to be established, with a current estimate of 90m long by 10–15m wide. It remains unclear whether the mound incorporates one or two cairns. The southern half of the mound certainly accommodates three funerary spaces, and perhaps more. The centre of the northern part of the mound has been the target of stone-robbing, destroying the passage graves but not the facades.

During the 5th millennium Angoumois-type dolmens — tombs comprising a passage and a quadrangular chamber characterized by high-quality stone working — appeared in west-central France. During a recent collective research and evaluation program (2012 – 2015), excavations, multi-method prospecting, and technological and architectural analyses have yielded new data. Megalithic monuments are part of a landscape that has been profoundly transformed by people, and are reflections of a desire to erect social and territorial markers. Geophysical prospecting undertaken for the first time on and around these monuments has revealed original features that contribute to the monumentalization of the landscape in the same way as the fortifications associated with the world of the living. The excavations of the Petite Pérotte and Motte de la Jacquille (Fontenille, Charente) dolmens have enabled us to define both petrographical type and geographical origin of the monoliths as well as to bring to light the architectural choices made by the builders. The builders clearly focused on the monoliths of the funerary chamber, as exemplified by the construction of the stone door of Motte de la Jacquille, a unique example in European megalithism. This work goes beyond mere aesthetic preoccupations, and demonstrates a genuine investment of symbolism in megalithic construction. One of the most significant advances relates to the discovery of numerous examples of old structural stones in the construction of the Motte de la Jacquille funerary chamber. These point to the recycling of a previously existing funerary chamber, specifically deconstructed for this later occasion. Several scenarios are discussed to explore the possible motivations underlying such reuse., Au Ve millénaire, le Centre-Ouest de la France voit l’apparition des dolmens de type angoumoisin : tombes à couloir à chambre quadrangulaire caractérisées par un investissement important du travail de la pierre (Burnez, 1976). À l’occasion d’un programme collectif de recherche et de valorisation (2012– 2015), de nouvelles données ont été obtenues grâce à des fouilles, des prospections multi-méthodes et des analyses technologiques et architecturales. Intégré dans un paysage profondément modifié par l’homme, les monuments mégalithiques sont le reflet d’une volonté de marquage social et territorial. Des prospections géophysiques réalisées pour la première fois sur et autour des monuments ont révélé des structures inédites qui participent à la monumentalisation du paysage tout comme les enceintes du monde des vivants. Les fouilles des dolmens de la Petite Pérotte et de la Motte de la Jacquille (Fontenille, Charente) ont permis de préciser la nature pétrographique et l''origine géographique des monolithes et de mettre en évidence des choix architecturaux. La tradition du travail de la pierre typique des dolmens de type angoumoisin se traduit dans les techniques de transformation du calcaire. Le débitage et l’équarrissage des orthostates produit des blocs aux dimensions standardisées. La transformation de la pierre s’attache ensuite à dresser les faces visibles grâce à un travail de martelage. Ce dernier est parfois suivi d’un lissage, voire d’un début de polissage sur les blocs les plus investis. La technique du champlevé est systématiquement utilisée dans l’art pariétal et s’inscrit parfaitement dans l’exigence de cette tradition technique. En fin de chaîne opératoire, les pierres les plus ouvragées sont réservées à certaines zones du monument et font l’objet d’une véritable mise en scène. À la Motte de la Jacquille, c’est la paroi la plus lisse qui fait face à l’entrée. Cette même paroi bénéficie d’un éclairement naturel alors que le reste de la chambre reste dans la pénombre. Ces éléments d’observation vont dans le sens de la présence d’une segmentation de l’espace. Au centre du dispositif de la tombe, la chambre funéraire est constituée d’orthostates jointifs et bien dressés de façon à créer un espace parfait au détriment du couloir. Ce dernier reste beaucoup moins investi et sert finalement de «faire-valoir » à la chambre. Tout concourt à la mise en scène des parois visibles de la chambre funéraire, comme en témoigne la fabrication de la porte en pierre de la Motte de la Jacquille, exemplaire unique dans le mégalithisme européen. Ce travail dépasse de simples préoccupations esthétiques, au profit d’un authentique codage symbolique des parois. L’une des avancées les plus significatives est la découverte de nombreux anachronismes de construction dans la chambre funéraire de la Motte de la Jacquille. Au total, dix orthostates sur les vingt que compte le monument portent des preuves ou des indices forts en faveur de la présence d’un épisode de réemploi, perceptible notamment par la présence de rainures d’emboitement inactives sur certains orthostates. Ces cas sont uniquement observés dans la chambre et dans la partie du couloir proche de cette dernière. Il est pratiquement certain que les blocs proviennent d’une autre chambre funéraire, et non du démantèlement d’un couloir, où les monolithes n’ont pas le même niveau de finition. Les bords avec rainures d’emboîtement et parois dressées sont l’apanage des chambres funéraires. Toutes ces anomalies montrent qu’une ou plusieurs chambres funéraires ont été réemployées dans la construction du monument de la Motte de la Jacquille. Un dolmen a bel et bien été recyclé dans un autre dolmen. Cet exemple est le premier cas démontré d’orthostates de chambre funéraire en réemploi dans une autre chambre funéraire. Différents scénarios peuvent être proposés pour expliquer les motivations d’un tel geste de recyclage. Un premier scénario serait le démontage d’un premier monument éloigné géographiquement de la Motte de la Jacquille. Il est fort probable que ce premier monument au moment de son démontage ne soit ni abandonné, ni vidé de son contenu. On en déduit une suite de gestes. D’abord, il est nécessaire d’enlever une partie du cairn puis la table de couverture. Cette dernière est-elle abandonnée ou ellemême recyclée ? Dans un second temps, il faut «gérer » les dépôts humains, sont-ils abandonnés ou déplacés dans une autre structure ? Ensuite, il faut dégager les orthostates sans les casser, avant de les transporter vers le nouveau lieu de construction. On constate que le mode opératoire d’un réemploi d’orthostat de chambre funéraire est beaucoup plus complexe que celui d’un menhir ou d’une stèle gravée. Le second scénario privilégie le démontage d’une chambre funéraire déjà construite à la Motte de la Jacquille et sa reconstruction selon un plan différent. Cette hypothèse s’appuie sur un cas avéré de réaménagement d’une chambre funéraire en place dans le monument E2 de la nécropole de Bougon (Mohen, 2002). À Bougon, la chambre funéraire initialement ronde a, dans un deuxième temps, été transformée en un espace quadrangulaire. Ces transformations de chambre ont d’ailleurs été possiblement plus nombreuses que ce seul cas avéré, à l’image des réaménagements de tumulus qui se chiffrent par dizaine (Joussaume, 2003). En termes de chaîne opératoire, le démontage suivi d’une reconstruction sur place implique la plupart des gestes évoqués dans le premier scénario sauf le transport, à moins d’envisager une reprise en sous oeuvre. International audience; We propose a workflow of tools and procedures to reconstruct an existing archaeological site as a virtual 3D reconstitution in a large scale immersive system. This interdisciplinary endeavor, gathering archaeologists and virtual reality computer scientists, is the first step of a joint research project with three objectives: (i) propose a common workflow to reconstruct archaeological sites as 3D models in fully immersive systems, (ii) provide archaeologists with tools and interaction metaphors to exploit immersive reconstitutions, and (iii) develop the use and access of immersive systems to archaeologists. In this context, we present results from the immersive reconstitution of Carn's monument central chamber, in Finistère, France, a site currently studied by the Creaah archaeology laboratory. The results rely on a detailed workflow we propose, which uses efficient solutions to enable archaeologists to work with immersive systems. In particular, we proposed a procedure to model the central chamber of the Carn monument, and compare several softwares to deploy it in an imersive structure. We then proposed two immersive implementations of the central chamber, with simple interaction tools, and finally describe the European project Visionair which provides access to high level visualization facilities.

During the mid-3rd millennium BC central Slovenia, north-eastern Italy and the eastern Adriatic coast developed similar cultural traditions in pottery production which have been ascribed to the so-called Ljubljana culture. Among the investigated sites of this period, the Deschmann’s pile dwellings near Ig, in the Ljubljansko barje in central Slovenia, in their younger phase of existence (c. 2600-2400 B.C.), are probably the most famous. As many scholars already pointed out, numerous finds attributed to the Ljubljana culture suggest a potential interaction between this culture and the Bell Beaker one: among them, ceramic vessels with a specific ornamentation technique (the so-called barbed-wire decoration), flint daggers, boar’s tusks, metal daggers and awls, and so on. Nevertheless, a small pear-shaped vessel from the Deschmann’s pile dwellings, decorated with a linear band incised motif reminiscent of the Bell Beaker metope decoration, is the only artefact of this type known from central Slovenia. Despite its similarity with the typical beakers of the Bell Beaker culture, no precise typological analogies have been found in the literature. For these reasons, technological and chemical analysis have been carried out on it and comparative pottery materials attributed to the Ljubljana Culture with the purpose to understand if such beaker was locally produced or imported to central Slovenia. Since thefinds from the Deschmann’s pile dwellings cannot be sampled for destructive analysis, we have adopted a non-destructive approach combining X-ray Computed Microtomography (microCT) and Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis (PGAA) to explore their average structural and compositional (elemental) features, respectively. The results obtained so far will be presented at the Conference.

Session XXXII-3. Pre and protohistoric stone architectures: comparisons of the social and technical contexts associated to their building; International audience; The analytical methods applied to the study of megalithic building have been vastly renewed during the last decade. It is now possible to accurately follow the progress of construction sites, sometimes with surprising results, such as those from the eastern parts of tumulus C of Péré, Prissé-la-Charrière. Access ramps, inclined planes and terraced floors are used as construction bases. First the elevation plan is drawn on the ground, sometimes at every step of the construction work. It also bears some pentimenti, or work stops. The first part of this paper illustrates the methods implemented to reach such results. The second part will address work management on the construction site, through the irregular distribution of know-how on the site. Locally, these methods could confirm the coordination of rather segmented work teams by specialists. More generally, through examples from other regions (Brittany, Britain and Iberia), we will discuss the function of such construction sites in the process of knowledge transmission or the presence of travelling specialists, or masons as they should indeed be called. As for the architectural project and the implementation of the global project, the question of the existence of potential engineers is raised, although this word may appear anachronical in relation to what we know – or think we know – about the social organisation of human groups in Western Neolithic Europe. All these perspectives tend to definitively dispel the tenacious primitivism ‘assumption’ from megalithic studies, so deeply rooted in the history of research on this subject.; Les méthodes d'étude du bâti mégalithique ont été largement renouvelées au cours des dix dernières années. On peut désormais suivre la progression du chantier de construction, avec parfois des résultats surprenants comme ceux acquis à l'occasion de la fouille des parties orientales du tumulus C de Péré à Prissé-la-Charrière. Rampes, plans inclinés et terrasses étagées servent de soubassement à la construction. Le plan des élévations est d'abord dessiné au sol, parfois à chaque étape de la construction. Celle-ci connaît aussi quelques repentirs, ou des arrêts du chantier. Une première partie de la communication illustrera les méthodes mises en œuvre pour arriver à de telles conclusions. La seconde partie traitera de l'organisation du travail sur le chantier, d'abord au travers de différences savoir-faire inégalement réparties dans l'espace. Localement, elles pourraient rendre compte d'une coordination, par des acteurs spécialisés, d'équipe au travail plutôt segmenté, en revanche. Plus largement, et au travers d'exemples pris également dans d'autres régions (Bretagne, Iles Britanniques ou Péninsule Ibérique), on discutera également du rôle de tels chantiers dans la transmission des connaissances ou de l'existence de spécialistes itinérants; des maçons puisqu'alors ce serait ainsi qu'il faut les appeler. Quant à la conception du projet architectural, comme pour la mise en œuvre du projet d'ensemble, se pose également la question de l'existence de quelques intervenants faisant office d'ingénieurs, même si ce terme peut paraître anachronique par rapport à ce que l'on sait - ou croit savoir - de l'organisation sociale des groupes humain du Néolithique en Europe occidentale. Autant de perspectives nouvelles tendant à dégager définitivement l'étude de ces mégalithes d'un présupposé de "primitivisme", tenace, qui plonge profondément ses racines dans l'histoire des recherches sur ce sujet.

International audience; In Western France, enclosure entrance systems dated to the Neolithic (V-III millennium BC) are known for their complexity, which has been observed ever since the first extensive archaeological research on the topic at the end of the 20th century. This was confirmed almost a century later through aerial prospections, and by the extensive excavations of preventive archaeology. Until recently however, there were few examples that allowed us to illustrate the attention brought to the arrangement of these circulation zones through the study of preserved surfaces or vestiges in elevation. Circulation spaces, stone paths, raised stelas, or deposits all become accessible for analysis. The diversity of these monumental entrances and stone elevations (raised stone blocks, dry walls, etc.) of barred spurs completes the wooden elements known to have been preserved in humid conditions as far as trenched enclosures are concerned. The whole study sheds new light on what was previously only hinted at by negative structures, without being in opposition to those, and gives us new information on the building site of these constructions.

International audience; New archaeological studies have been achieved on the insular site of Guennoc. They take place half a century after those made by P.-R. Giot. This island, which has an important surface, has been fortified with a rampart whose remains are conserved over nearly 100 m. Through a study of unpublished archive data and a new fieldwork investigations, it was possible to specify the nature of this important rampart built at the end of the second Iron Age. Forced by natural erosion, the results of this non-intrusive survey constitute new elements toward an atypical fortification that could be qualified as a ‘barred island’. Results presented here report on this little-known site of rich archaeological potential that find comparison with other islands from the Atlantic coast of France.

International audience; Architectural conceptualisation of megaliths has often been the topic of distinct studies, with burial chambers and raised stones serving as bases for two different research axes. The study of reused steles, however, has recently raised attention and suggests that these two types of arrangements could be more closely linked. In investigating how burial chambers and individual raised stones might be complementary, and in analyzing the engineering of these megalithic architectural projects, many convergence points have been found between arrangements of raised stones placed in the open air, in sepulchral spaces, and in tumuli. It seems the intentions of the builders reflect the strong connections they saw between themselves and the world they lived in, understood, and exploited. It also speaks of the particular attention they gave to their dead, and their preoccupation with nature versus culture.An important actualized corpus of megaliths exists in the department of Morbihan. Studies of their architectural arrangements provide essential data to better understand them.
