1. Evidence for auroral influence on Jupiter's nitrogen and oxygen chemistry revealed by ALMA

Abstract: The localized delivery of new long-lived species to Jupiter's stratosphere by comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 in 1994 opened a window to constrain Jovian chemistry and dynamics by monitoring the evolution of their vertical and horizontal distributions. However, the spatial distributions of CO and HCN, two of these long-lived species, had never been jointly observed at high latitudinal resolution. Atacama large millimeter/submillimeter array observations of HCN and CO in March 2017 show that CO was meridionally uniform and restricted to pressures lower than 3 $\pm$ 1 mbar. HCN shared a similar vertical distribution in the low- to mid-latitudes, but was depleted at pressures between 2$^{+2}_ {-1}$ and 0.04$^{+0.07}_{-0.03}$ mbar in the aurora and surrounding regions, resulting in a drop by two orders of magnitude in column density. We propose that heterogeneous chemistry bonds HCN on large aurora-produced aerosols at these pressures in the Jovian auroral regions causing the observed depletion., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

2. Temperature and composition disturbances in the southern auroral region of Jupiter revealed by JWST/MIRI

Abstract: Jupiters south polar region was observed by JWST Mid Infrared Instrument in December 2022. We used the Medium Resolution Spectrometer mode to provide new information about Jupiters South Polar stratosphere. The southern auroral region was visible and influenced the atmosphere in several ways. 1: In the interior of the southern auroral oval, we retrieved peak temperatures at two distinct pressure levels near 0.01 and 1 mbar, with warmer temperatures with respect to non auroral regions of 12 pm 2 K and 37 pm 4 K respectively. A cold polar vortex is centered at 65S at 10 mbar. 2: We found that the homopause is elevated to 590+25-118 km above the 1-bar pressure level inside the auroral oval compared to 460+60-50 km at neighboring latitudes and with an upper altitude of 350 km in regions not affected by auroral precipitation. 3: The retrieved abundance of C2H2 shows an increase within the auroral oval, and it exhibits high abundances throughout the polar region. The retrieved abundance of C2H6 increases towards the pole, without being localized in the auroral oval, in contrast with previous analysis. We determined that the warming at 0.01 mbar and the elevated homopause might be caused by the flux of charged particles depositing their energy in the South Polar Region. The 1 mbar hotspot may arise from adiabatic heating resulting from auroral driven downwelling. The cold region at 10 mbar may be caused by radiative cooling by stratospheric aerosols. The differences in spatial distribution seem to indicate that the hydrocarbons analyzed are affected differently by auroral precipitation.

Abstract: ESA's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) will provide a detailed investigation of the Jovian system in the 2030s, combining a suite of state-of-the-art instruments with an orbital tour tailored to maximise observing opportunities. We review the Jupiter science enabled by the JUICE mission, building on the legacy of discoveries from the Galileo, Cassini, and Juno missions, alongside ground- and space-based observatories. We focus on remote sensing of the climate, meteorology, and chemistry of the atmosphere and auroras from the cloud-forming weather layer, through the upper troposphere, into the stratosphere and ionosphere. The Jupiter orbital tour provides a wealth of opportunities for atmospheric and auroral science: global perspectives with its near-equatorial and inclined phases, sampling all phase angles from dayside to nightside, and investigating phenomena evolving on timescales from minutes to months. The remote sensing payload spans far-UV spectroscopy (50-210 nm), visible imaging (340-1080 nm), visible/near-infrared spectroscopy (0.49-5.56 $\mu$m), and sub-millimetre sounding (near 530-625\,GHz and 1067-1275\,GHz). This is coupled to radio, stellar, and solar occultation opportunities to explore the atmosphere at high vertical resolution; and radio and plasma wave measurements of electric discharges in the Jovian atmosphere and auroras. Cross-disciplinary scientific investigations enable JUICE to explore coupling processes in giant planet atmospheres, to show how the atmosphere is connected to (i) the deep circulation and composition of the hydrogen-dominated interior; and (ii) to the currents and charged particle environments of the external magnetosphere. Abstract: We examine the observed properties of the Nili Fossae olivine-clay-carbonate lithology from orbital data and in situ by the Mars 2020 rover at the S\'e\'itah unit in Jezero crater, including: 1) composition (Liu, 2022) 2) grain size (Tice, 2022) 3) inferred viscosity (calculated based on geochemistry collected by SuperCam (Wiens, 2022)). Based on the low viscosity and distribution of the unit we postulate a flood lava origin for the olivine-clay-carbonate at S\'e\'itah. We include a new CRISM map of the clay 2.38 {\mu}m band and use in situ data to show that the clay in the olivine cumulate in the S\'e\'itah formation is consistent with talc or serpentine from Mars 2020 SuperCam LIBS and VISIR and MastCam-Z observations. We discuss two intertwining aspects of the history of the lithology: 1) the emplacement and properties of the cumulate layer within a lava lake, based on terrestrial analogs in the Pilbara, Western Australia, and using previously published models of flood lavas and lava lakes, and 2) the limited extent of post emplacement alteration, including clay and carbonate alteration (Clave, 2022; Mandon, 2022)., Comment: 34 pages, 15 figures

Abstract: We present the Infrared spectrometer of SuperCam Instrument Suite that enables the Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover to study remotely the Martian mineralogy within the Jezero crater. The SuperCam IR spectrometer is designed to acquire spectra in the 1.3-2.6 $\mu$m domain at a spectral resolution ranging from 5 to 20~nm. The field-of-view of 1.15 mrad, is coaligned with the boresights of the other remote-sensing techniques provided by SuperCam: laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, remote time-resolved Raman and luminescence spectroscopies, and visible reflectance spectroscopy, and micro-imaging. The IR spectra can be acquired from the robotic-arm workspace to long-distances, in order to explore the mineralogical diversity of the Jezero crater, guide the Perseverance Rover in its sampling task, and to document the samples' environment. Abstract: Remote sensing observations suffer significant limitations when used to study the bulk atmospheric composition of the giant planets of our solar system. This impacts our knowledge of the formation of these planets and the physics of their atmospheres. A remarkable example of the superiority of in situ probe measurements was illustrated by the exploration of Jupiter, where key measurements such as the determination of the noble gases' abundances and the precise measurement of the helium mixing ratio were only made available through in situ measurements by the Galileo probe. Here we describe the main scientific goals to be addressed by the future in situ exploration of Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, placing the Galileo probe exploration of Jupiter in a broader context. An atmospheric entry probe targeting the 10-bar level would yield insight into two broad themes: i) the formation history of the giant planets and that of the Solar System, and ii) the processes at play in planetary atmospheres. The probe would descend under parachute to measure composition, structure, and dynamics, with data returned to Earth using a Carrier Relay Spacecraft as a relay station. 7. Radiative-equilibrium model of Jupiter's atmosphere and application to estimating stratospheric circulations

Abstract: We present a computationally efficient 1-D seasonal radiative model, with convective adjustment, of Jupiter's atmosphere. Our model takes into account radiative forcings from the main hydrocarbons (methane, ethane, acetylene), ammonia, collision-induced absorption, four cloud and haze layers (including a UV-absorbing "polar" stratospheric haze) and an internal heat flux. We detail sensitivity studies of the equilibrium temperature profile to several parameters. We discuss the expected seasonal, vertical and meridional thermal structure and compare it to that derived from Cassini and ground-based thermal infrared observations. We find that the equilibrium temperature in the 5-30 mbar pressure range is very sensitive to the chosen stratospheric haze optical properties, sizes and number of monomers. The polar haze can significantly warm the lower stratosphere (10-30 mbar) by up to 20K at latitudes 45-60{\deg}. At pressures lower than 3 mbar, our modeled temperatures systematically underestimate the observed ones by 5K. This might suggest that other processes, such as dynamical heating by wave breaking or by eddies, or a coupling with thermospheric circulation, play an important role. In the troposphere, we can only match the observed lack of meridional gradient of temperature by varying the internal heat flux with latitude. We then exploit knowledge of heating and cooling rates to diagnose the residual-mean circulation in Jupiter's stratosphere, under the assumption that the eddy heat flux convergence term is negligible. In the lower stratosphere (5-30 mbar), the residual-mean circulation strongly depends on the assumed properties of the stratospheric haze. Our main conclusion is that it is crucial to improve our knowledge on the radiative forcing terms to increase our confidence in the estimated circulation. 8. Global climate modeling of Saturn's atmosphere. Part II: multi-annual high-resolution dynamical simulations

Abstract: The Cassini mission unveiled the intense and diverse activity in Saturn's atmosphere: banded jets, waves, vortices, equatorial oscillations. To set the path towards a better understanding of those phenomena, we performed high-resolution multi-annual numerical simulations of Saturn's atmospheric dynamics. We built a new Global Climate Model [GCM] for Saturn, named the Saturn DYNAMICO GCM, by combining a radiative-seasonal model tailored for Saturn to a hydrodynamical solver based on an icosahedral grid suitable for massively-parallel architectures. The impact of numerical dissipation, and the conservation of angular momentum, are examined in the model before a reference simulation employing the Saturn DYNAMICO GCM with a $1/2^{\circ}$ latitude-longitude resolution is considered for analysis. Mid-latitude banded jets showing similarity with observations are reproduced by our model. Those jets are accelerated and maintained by eddy momentum transfers to the mean flow, with the magnitude of momentum fluxes compliant with the observed values. The eddy activity is not regularly distributed with time, but appears as bursts; both barotropic and baroclinic instabilities could play a role in the eddy activity. The steady-state latitude of occurrence of jets is controlled by poleward migration during the spin-up of our model. At the equator, a weakly-superrotating tropospheric jet and vertically-stacked alternating stratospheric jets are obtained in our GCM simulations. The model produces Yanai (Rossby-gravity), Rossby and Kelvin waves at the equator, as well as extratropical Rossby waves, and large-scale vortices in polar regions. 9. Disruption of Saturn's Quasi-Periodic Equatorial Oscillation by the Great Northern Storm

Abstract: Observations of planets throughout our Solar System have revealed that the Earth is not alone in possessing natural, inter-annual atmospheric cycles. The equatorial middle atmospheres of the Earth, Jupiter and Saturn all exhibit a remarkably similar phenomenon - a vertical, cyclic pattern of alternating temperatures and zonal (east-west) wind regimes that propagate slowly downwards with a well-defined multi-Earth-year period. Earth's Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO, observed in the lower stratospheres with an average period of 28 months) is one of the most regular, repeatable cycles exhibited by our climate system, and yet recent work has shown that this regularity can be disrupted by events occurring far away from the equatorial region, an example of a phenomenon known as atmospheric teleconnection. Here we reveal that Saturn's equatorial Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO, with a ~15-year period) can also be dramatically perturbed. An intense springtime storm erupted at Saturn's northern mid-latitudes in December 2010, spawning a gigantic hot vortex in the stratosphere at $40^\circ$N that persisted for 3 years. Far from the storm, the Cassini temperature measurements showed a dramatic $\sim10$-K cooling in the 0.5-5 mbar range across the entire equatorial region, disrupting the regular QPO pattern and significantly altering the middle-atmospheric wind structure, suggesting an injection of westward momentum into the equatorial wind system from waves generated by the northern storm. Hence, as on Earth, meteorological activity at mid-latitudes can have a profound effect on the regular atmospheric cycles in the tropics, demonstrating that waves can provide horizontal teleconnections between the phenomena shaping the middle atmospheres of giant planets., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures, published in Nature Astronomy

10. Mapping of Jupiter's tropospheric NH$_3$ abundance using ground-based IRTF/TEXES observations at 5 $\mu$m

Abstract: We report on results of an observing campaign to support the Juno mission. At the beginning of 2016, using TEXES (Texas Echelon cross-dispersed Echelle Spectrograph), mounted on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), we obtained data cubes of Jupiter in the 1930--1943 cm$^{-1}$ spectral ranges (around 5 $\mu$m), which probe the atmosphere in the 1--4 bar region, with a spectral resolution of $\approx$ 0.15 cm$^{-1}$ and an angular resolution of $\approx$ 1.4". This dataset is analysed by a code that combines a line-by-line radiative transfer model with a non-linear optimal estimation inversion method. The inversion retrieves the vertical abundance profiles of NH$_3$ - which is the main contributor at these wavelengths - with a maximum sensitivity at $\approx$ 1--3 bar, as well as the cloud transmittance. This retrieval is performed on over more than one thousand pixels of our data cubes, producing maps of the disk, where all the major belts are visible. We present our retrieved NH$_3$ abundance maps which can be compared with the distribution observed by Juno's MWR (Bolton et al., 2017; Li et al., 2017) in the 2 bar region and discuss their significance for the understanding of Jupiter's atmospheric dynamics. We are able to show important latitudinal variations - such as in the North Equatorial Belt (NEB), where the NH$_3$ abundance is observed to drop down to 60 ppmv at 2 bar - as well as longitudinal variability. In the zones, we find the NH$_3$ abundance to increase with depth, from 100 $\pm$ 15 ppmv at 1 bar to 500 $\pm$ 30 ppmv at 3 bar. We also display the cloud transmittance--NH$_3$ abundance relationship, and find different behaviour for the NEB, the other belts and the zones. 11. Stratospheric aftermath of the 2010 Storm on Saturn as observed by the TEXES instrument. I. Temperature structure

Abstract: We report on spectroscopic observations of Saturn's stratosphere in July 2011 with the Texas Echelon Cross Echelle Spectrograph (TEXES) mounted on the NASA InfraRed Telescope Facility (IRTF). The observations, targeting several lines of the CH$_4$ $\nu_4$ band and the H$_2$ S(1) quadrupolar line, were designed to determine how Saturn's stratospheric thermal structure was disturbed by the 2010 Great White Spot. A study of Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) spectra had already shown the presence of a large stratospheric disturbance centered at a pressure of 2~hPa, nicknamed the beacon B0, and a tail of warm air at lower pressures (Fletcher et al. 2012. Icarus 221, 560--586). Our observations confirm that the beacon B0 vertical structure determined by CIRS, with a maximum temperature of $180\pm1$K at 2~hPa, is overlain by a temperature decrease up to the 0.2-hPa pressure level. Our retrieved maximum temperature of $180\pm1$K is colder than that derived by CIRS ($200\pm1$K), a difference that may be quantitatively explained by terrestrial atmospheric smearing. We propose a scenario for the formation of the beacon based on the saturation of gravity waves emitted by the GWS. Our observations also reveal that the tail is a planet-encircling disturbance in Saturn's upper stratosphere, oscillating between 0.2 and 0.02~hPa, showing a distinct wavenumber-2 pattern. We propose that this pattern in the upper stratosphere is either the signature of thermal tides generated by the presence of the warm beacon in the mid-stratosphere, or the signature of Rossby wave activity., Comment: Accepted for publication in Icarus

Abstract: In this document, we summarize the main capabilities of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) for performing observations of Mars. The distinctive vantage point of JWST at the Sun-Earth Lagrange point (L2) will allow sampling the full observable disk, permitting the study of short-term phenomena, diurnal processes (across the East-West axis) and latitudinal processes between the hemispheres (including seasonal effects) with excellent spatial resolutions (0.07 arcsec at 2 {\mu}m). Spectroscopic observations will be achievable in the 0.7-5 {\mu}m spectral region with NIRSpec at a maximum resolving power of 2700, and with 8000 in the 1-1.25 {\mu}m range. Imaging will be attainable with NIRCam at 4.3 {\mu}m and with two narrow filters near 2 {\mu}m, while the nightside will be accessible with several filters in the 0.5 to 2 {\mu}m. Such a powerful suite of instruments will be a major asset for the exploration and characterization of Mars. Some science cases include the mapping of the water D/H ratio, investigations of the Martian mesosphere via the characterization of the non-LTE CO$_2$ emission at 4.3 {\mu}m, studies of chemical transport via observations of the O$_2$ nightglow at 1.27 {\mu}m, high cadence mapping of the variability dust and water ice clouds, and sensitive searches for trace species and hydrated features on the Martian surface. 14. ISO-SWS observations of Jupiter: measurement of the ammonia tropospheric profile and of the 15N/14N isotopic ratio

Abstract: We present the results of the Infrared Space Observatory Short Wavelength Spectrometer (ISO-SWS) observations of Jupiter related to ammonia. We focus on two spectral regions; the first one (the 10-micron region), probes atmospheric levels between 1 and 0.2 bar, while the second one (the 5-micron window), sounds the atmosphere between 8 and 2 bars. The two spectral windows cannot be fitted with the same ammonia vertical distribution. From the 10-micron region we infer an ammonia distribution of about half the saturation profile above the 1-bar level, where the N/H ratio is roughly solar. A totally different picture is derived from the 5-micron window, where we determine an upper limit of 3.7E-5 at 1 bar and find an increasing NH3 abundance at least down to 4 bar. This profile is similar to the one measured by the Galileo probe (Folkner et al. 1998). The discrepancy between the two spectral regions most likely arises from the spatial heterogeneity of Jupiter, the 5-micron window sounding dry areas unveiled by a locally thin cloud cover (the 5-micron hot spots), and the 10-micron region probing the mean jovian atmosphere above 1 bar. The 15NH3 mixing ratio is measured around 400 mbar from nu_2 band absorptions in the 10-micron region. We find the atmosphere of Jupiter highly depleted in 15N at this pressure level (15N/14N)_{Jupiter}=(1.9^{+0.9}_{-1.))E-3, while (15N/14N)_{earth}=3.68E-3. It is not clear whether this depletion reveals the global jovian (15N/14N) ratio. Instead an isotopic fractionation process, taking place during the ammonia cloud condensation, is indicated as a possible mechanism. A fractionation coefficient alpha higher than 1.08 would explain the observed isotopic ratio, but the lack of laboratory data does not allow us to decide unambiguously on the origin of the observed low (15N/14N) ratio., Comment: 57 pages, 2 tables, 15 figures. 15. Vapor pressure isotope fractionation effects in planetary atmospheres: application to deuterium

Abstract: The impact of the vapor pressure difference between deuterated and nondeuterated condensing molecules in planetary atmospheres is quantitatively assessed. This difference results in a loss of deuterium in the vapor phase above the condensation level. In Titan, Uranus and Neptune, the effect on CH3D is too subtle to alter current D/H ratio determinations. In Mars, the effect can induce a large depletion of HDO, starting about one scale height above the condensation level. Although the current infrared measurements of the D/H ratio appear to be almost unaffected, the intensity of disk-averaged millimetric HDO lines can be modified by about 10%. Abstract: Before Perseverance, Jezero crater's floor was variably hypothesized to have a lacustrine, lava, volcanic airfall, or aeolian origin. SuperCam observations in the first 286 Mars days on Mars revealed a volcanic and intrusive terrain with compositional and density stratification.The dominant lithology along the traverse is basaltic, with plagioclase enrichment in stratigraphically higher locations. Stratigraphically lower, layered rocks are richer in normative pyroxene. The lowest observed unit has the highest inferred density and is olivine-rich with coarse (1.5 millimeters) euhedral, relatively unweathered grains, suggesting a cumulate origin. This is the first martian cumulate and shows similarities to martian meteorites, which also express olivine disequilibrium. Alteration materials including carbonates, sulfates, perchlorates, hydrated silicates, and iron oxides are pervasive but low in abundance, suggesting relatively brief lacustrine conditions. Orbital observations link the Jezero floor lithology to the broader Nili-Syrtis region, suggesting that density-driven compositional stratification is a regional characteristic. Abstract: International audience Since January 2012, we have been monitoring the behavior of sulfur dioxide and water on Venus, using the Texas Echelon Cross-Echelle Spectrograph imaging spectrometer at the NASA InfraRed Telescope Facility (IRTF, Mauna Kea Observatory). Here, we present new data recorded in February and April 2019 in the 1345 cm−1 (7.4 μm) spectral range, where SO2, CO2, and HDO (used as a proxy for H2O) transitions were observed. The cloud top of Venus was probed at an altitude of about 64 km. As in our previous studies, the volume mixing ratio (vmr) of SO2 was estimated using the SO2/CO2 line depth ratio of weak transitions; the H2O volume mixing ratio was derived from the HDO/CO2 line depth ratio, assuming a D/H ratio of 200 times the Vienna standard mean ocean water. As reported in our previous analyses, the SO2 mixing ratio shows strong variations with time and also over the disk, showing evidence for the formation of SO2 plumes with a lifetime of a few hours; in contrast, the H2O abundance is remarkably uniform over the disk and shows moderate variations as a function of time. We have used the 2019 data in addition to our previous dataset to study the long-term variations of SO2 and H2O. The data reveal a long-term anti-correlation with a correlation coefficient of −0.80; this coefficient becomes −0.90 if the analysis is restricted to the 2014–2019 time period. The statistical analysis of the SO2 plumes as a function of local time confirms our previous result with a minimum around 10:00 and two maxima near the terminators. The dependence of the SO2 vmr with respect to local time shows a higher abundance at the evening terminator with respect to the morning. The dependence of the SO2 vmr with respect to longitude exhibits a broad maximum at 120–200° east longitudes, near the region of Aphrodite Terra. However, this trend has not been observed by other measurements and has yet to be confirmed.

Abstract: A publisher correction to this article was published on 17 April 2019, Global dust storms on Mars are rare1,2 but can affect the Martian atmosphere for several months. They can cause changes in atmospheric dynamics and inflation of the atmosphere3, primarily owing to solar heating of the dust3. In turn, changes in atmospheric dynamics can affect the distribution of atmospheric water vapour, with potential implications for the atmospheric photochemistry and climate on Mars4. Recent observations of the water vapour abundance in the Martian atmosphere during dust storm conditions revealed a high-altitude increase in atmospheric water vapour that was more pronounced at high northern latitudes5,6, as well as a decrease in the water column at low latitudes7,8. Here we present concurrent, high-resolution measurements of dust, water and semiheavy water (HDO) at the onset of a global dust storm, obtained by the NOMAD and ACS instruments onboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. We report the vertical distribution of the HDO/H2O ratio (D/H) from the planetary boundary layer up to an altitude of 80 kilometres. Our findings suggest that before the onset of the dust storm, HDO abundances were reduced to levels below detectability at altitudes above 40 kilometres. This decrease in HDO coincided with the presence of water-ice clouds. During the storm, an increase in the abundance of H2O and HDO was observed at altitudes between 40 and 80 kilometres. We propose that these increased abundances may be the result of warmer temperatures during the dust storm causing stronger atmospheric circulation and preventing ice cloud formation, which may confine water vapour to lower altitudes through gravitational fall and subsequent sublimation of ice crystals3. Abstract: A publisher correction to this article was published on 17 April 2019, The detection of methane on Mars has been interpreted as indicating that geochemical or biotic activities could persist on Mars today1. A number of different measurements of methane show evidence of transient, locally elevated methane concentrations and seasonal variations in background methane concentrations2–5. These measurements, however, are difficult to reconcile with our current understanding of the chemistry and physics of the Martian atmosphere6,7, which—given methane’s lifetime of several centuries—predicts an even, well mixed distribution of methane1,6,8. Here we report highly sensitive measurements of the atmosphere of Mars in an attempt to detect methane, using the ACS and NOMAD instruments onboard the ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter from April to August 2018. We did not detect any methane over a range of latitudes in both hemispheres, obtaining an upper limit for methane of about 0.05 parts per billion by volume, which is 10 to 100 times lower than previously reported positive detections2,4. We suggest that reconciliation between the present findings and the background methane concentrations found in the Gale crater4 would require an unknown process that can rapidly remove or sequester methane from the lower atmosphere before it spreads globally. © 2019, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited., ExoMars is the space mission of ESA and Roscosmos. Abstract: International audience; In July 1994, the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet (SL9) spectacularly impacted Jupiter near 44°S. On the long term, Jupiter was left with a variety of new species in its stratosphere, including CO, HCN, CS, H2O, and CO2. These species can be used as tracers for Jupiter’s stratospheric chemistry and dynamics. Their distributions have been monitored, although with strong limitations in terms of spatial resolution in most cases. We mapped the spectral emissions of CO and HCN (at 345 and 354 GHz, resp.) in Jupiter with ALMA in March 2017. We have successfully performed the first mosaic of Jupiter to cover the entire planet. We have recorded the data with a very high spectral resolution (up to 61 kHz) and at an unprecedented angular resolution of 1.1”, which translates into a meridional resolution of 3° at the equator and 7° at 70°S. The lines are detected at the planetary limb with a high signal-to-noise ratio. The emission distributions and line shapes at the limb indicate strong meridional variability for CO and HCN, quite different from one another. In this paper, we will present our observations and preliminary interpretation of the observed distributions.

Abstract: International audience; Uranus and Neptune, referred to as ice giants, are fundamentally different from the better-known gas giants (Jupiter and Saturn). Exploration of an ice giant system is a high-priority science objective, as these systems (including the magnetosphere, satellites, rings, atmosphere, and interior) challenge our understanding of planetary formation and evolution. The importance of the ice giants is reflected in NASA's 2011 Decadal Survey, comments from ESA's SSC in response to L2/L3 mission proposals and results of the 2017 NASA/ESA Ice Giants study. A crucial part of exploration of the ice giants is in situ sampling of the atmosphere via an atmospheric probe. A probe would bring insights in two broad themes: the formation history of our Solar System and the processes at play in planetary atmospheres. Here we summarize the science driver for in situ measurements at these two planets and discuss possible mission concepts that would be consistent with the constraints of ESA M-class missions.

Abstract: International audience; The Observatoire pour la Minéralogie, l'Eau, les Glaces, et l'Activité (OMEGA) investigation, on board the European Space Agency Mars Express mission, is mapping the surface composition of Mars at a 0.3- to 5-kilometer resolution by means of visible-near-infrared hyperspectral reflectance imagery. The data acquired during the first 9 months of the mission already reveal a diverse and complex surface mineralogy, offering key insights into the evolution of Mars. OMEGA has identified and mapped mafic iron-bearing silicates of both the northern and southern crust, localized concentrations of hydrated phyllosilicates and sulfates but no carbonates, and ices and frosts with a water-ice composition of the north polar perennial cap, as for the south cap, covered by a thin carbon dioxide-ice veneer.

26. Raising the Prestige of Public Engagement within the Planetary Science Community in Europe.

Abstract: We describe the outreach programme of the Europlanet Research Infrastructure (RI), a four-year project funded by the European Union under Framework 7 and designed to maximise planetary science output in Europe. Outreach is a key activity within Europlanet RI and we have put in place a programme to build channels of communication between the planetary science community, the public and the media. One of the major challenges that we have identified is the low value that some parts of the research community place on outreach activities. We describe how we hope to change attitudes and raise the prestige of public engagement in planetary science by establishing an annual prize and a funding scheme. Both schemes are now in their second year, with the third round due to be announced at the EPSC-DPS Joint Meeting in October 2011. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We report on results of an observational campaign to support the Juno mission. At thebeginning of 2016, using TEXES (Texas Echelon cross-dispersed Echelle Spectrograph),mounted on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), we obtained data cubes ofJupiter in the 1930–1943 cm−1 (5.14 - 5.18 μm) spectral range, which probes theatmosphere in the 1–4 bar region, with a spectral resolution of ≈ 0.15 cm −1 and anangular resolution of ≈ 1.4′′. This dataset is analyzed by a code which combines aline-by-line radiative transfer model with a non-linear optimal estimation inversionmethod. The inversion retrieves the vertical abundance proﬁles of NH3 — which is themain contributor at these wavelengths — with a maximum sensitivity at ≈ 1–3bar, as well as the cloud transmittance. This retrieval is performed on more thanone thousand pixels of our data cubes, producing maps of the disk, where all themajor belts are visible. We will discuss the results presented in our article, namelyour retrieved NH3 abundance maps which can be compared with the distributionobserved by Juno’s MWR (Bolton et al. 2017, Li et al. 2017) in the 2 bar regionand their signiﬁcance for the understanding of Jupiter’s atmospheric dynamics. Abstract: International audience; The Cassini mission has opened many science questions related to Saturn's atmospheric dynamics: jet-streams (including the hexagonal-shaped northern polar jet), giant convective storms, stratospheric equatorial oscillations, interhemispheric transport. This inspired our group to develop a Global Climate Model for Saturn that couples a massively-parallel icosahedral-grid hydrodynamical solver with detailed physical parameterizations (notably correlated-k radiative transfer) for Saturn's troposphere and stratosphere. Multiple test simulations led us to determine the best modeling settings to run simulations in which (amongst other requirements) the conservation of angular momentum is ensured with good accuracy. Multi-year simulations carried out with a spatial resolution of 1/2° in latitude/longitude allowed us to analyze the mechanisms accounting for jet acceleration (and possible latitudinal migration) in the troposphere and the stratosphere of Saturn, the formation of large-scale vortices and waves, and the occurrence of a zonostrophic regime. The perspectives for improvements of the reference Saturn simulations will be reviewed. We will also present simulations carried out for Jupiter (presently observed by the Juno mission) with the exact same modeling platform, to discuss comparative dynamics between both gas giants.

Abstract: The SuperCam instrument [1,2] onboard Mars2020 disposes of a variety of active and passive techniques, including passive spectroscopy in the 0.40-0.85 (VIS) and 1.3 to 2.6 microns (IR, [3,4]) wavelength ranges. Since the landing on Mars of Perseverance in February 2021, Supercam has acquired numerous observations of its near and distant environment, exploring the geological and mineralogical context of Jezero crater. In addition, several measurements were devoted to probing the atmosphere surrounding the Perseverance rover. The technique of using sky spectra in passive mode, known as "passive sky", has already been demonstrated with ChemCam on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover [4]. SuperCam provides a superset of the ChemCam capabilities used in [4], and in particular adds a near-infrared component that includes absorption and scattering characteristics of key gases and aerosols/clouds. "Passive sky" measurements have typically been performed every other week to allow a consistent monitoring of the seasonal evolution of the main quantities (CO2, O2, H2O, CO, aerosols/clouds). Particular attention was given to joint measurements of O2 and CO, as they appear as key components of the Martian chemical cycle and have never been measured together at the same time on the surface of Mars. As the 2 m wavelength region is used for the first time at the surface of Mars, it enables the detection of CO (around 2.35 m). CO possesses a small absorption that has made it difficult to identify in SuperCam spectra so far. Abstract: One of the goals of this thesis is to interpret the observations of the main hydrocarbons(C2H2 and C2H6) from Cassini (NASA/ESA) on Jupiter and Saturn. The one-dimensional photochemical models are insufficient to explain these spatially resolved observations. I have developed the first two-dimensional (altitude-latitude) seasonal photochemical model for the giant planets, which predicts their chemical composition.Without meridional transport, Saturn’s chemical composition follows the insolation variations. The C2H2 and C2H6 abundances measured by Cassini (Guerlet et al., 2009)are reproduced from the equator up to mid-latitudes, at pressures higher than 0.1mbar.At higher latitudes, the disagreements suggest either a stratospheric circulation cell orthe signature of ion-neutral chemistry. For the first time, I have coupled our seasonal photochemical model with the seasonal radiative model of Greathouse et al. (2008). I predict that the seasonal temperature peak is shifted half a season earlier, with respect to previous models, at high latitudes in the higher stratosphere.Jupiter shows weak seasonal variations of chemical composition, only controlled by its orbital eccentricity. The observed meridional distributions of C2H2 and C2H6 show opposition trends (Nixon et al., 2010). C2H6 observed distribution is reproduced when Isuppose a combination of meridional diffusion and stratospheric circulation, while causingat the same time a stronger agreement with the C2H2 observations. Accounting for theion-neutral chemistry might preferentially affect C2H2 and potentially play a key role on hydrocarbon abundances in Jupiter’s stratosphere., L’un des objectifs de cette thèse est d’interpréter les observations des principaux hydrocarbures(C2H2 et C2H6) effectuées par Cassini (NASA/ESA) sur Jupiter et Saturne. Les modèles photochimiques à une dimension sont insuffisants pour interpréter ces observations spatialement résolues. J’ai développé le premier modèle photochimique saisonnier à deux dimensions (altitude-latitude) des planètes géantes qui calcule leur composition chimique.En l’absence de transport méridional, la composition chimique de Saturne suit les variations d’ensoleillement. Les abondances de C2H2 et C2H6 mesurées par Cassini (Guerletet al., 2009) sont reproduites jusqu’aux latitudes moyennes, à des pressions supérieures à0,1mbar. Les écarts notés dans l’hémisphère sud suggèrent la présence de dynamique ou d’une chimie entre les ions et les espèces neutres. J’ai couplé, pour la première fois, mon modèle photochimique avec le modèle radiatif de Greathouse et al. (2008). Nous prédisons un décalage du pic saisonnier de température, par rapport aux précédents modèles, d’une demi-saison à haute altitude et aux hautes latitudes.Jupiter présente de faibles variations saisonnières de composition chimique, uniquement contrôlées par son excentricité. Les distributions méridionales observées de C2H2 etC2H6 présentent des tendances opposées (Nixon et al., 2010). Mon modèle est en accord avec les observations de C2H6 lorsque j’invoque une combinaison de diffusion méridionale et de circulation stratosphérique, tout en provoquant un plus grand désaccord avec les observations de C2H2. La chimie ionique pourrait principalement affecter C2H2 et jouer un rôle important dans l’atmosphère de Jupiter.
