1. Estimating reddening of the continuum and broad-line region of active galactic nuclei: the mean reddening of NGC 5548 and the size of the accretion disc

Abstract

We use seven different methods to estimate broad-line and continuum reddenings of NGC 5548. We investigate two possible reddening curves considered for active galactic nuclei (AGNs): the mean AGN reddening curve of Gaskell & Benker (2007) which is relatively flat in the ultraviolet, and a curve that rises strongly into the ultraviolet like a Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) reddening curve. We also consider a standard Milky Way curve. Regardless of the curve adopted, we find a total reddening ~14 times greater than the small amount of reddening due to dust in the solar neighbourhood. The UV-to-optical ratios rule out a steep SMC-like reddening curve for NGC 5548. The Milky Way and Gaskell & Benker curves give a mean reddening of E(B-V) = 0.25 +/- 0.02. The four non-hydrogen-line reddening indicators imply that the intrinsic hydrogen line ratios are consistent with Baker-Menzel case B values. The unreddened optical-to-UV spectral energy distribution is consistent with the predicted distribution for an externally-illuminated accretion disc. The reddening we derive for NGC 5548 is typical of previous estimates for type-1 AGNs. Neglecting internal extinction leads to an underestimate of the luminosity at 1200 Angstroms by a factor of seven. The size scale of the accretion disc has therefore been underestimated by a factor of ~2.6. This is similar to the accretion disc size discrepancy found in the 2013 AGNSTORM campaign and thus supports the proposal by Gaskell (2017) that the accretion disc size discrepancy is primarily due to the neglect of reddening., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. 8. Topology of automorphism groups of parabolic geometries

Abstract

We prove for the automorphism group of an arbitrary parabolic geometry that the $C^0$ and $C^{\infty}$ topologies coincide, and the group admits the structure of a Lie group in this topology. We further show that this automorphism group is closed in the homeomorphism group of the underlying manifold., Comment: Minor revisions as suggested by the referee. Abstract

This paper studies intersection theory on the compactified moduli space M(n,d) of holomorphic bundles of rank n and degree d over a fixed compact Riemann surface of genus g > 1 where n and d may have common factors. Because of the presence of singularities we work with the intersection cohomology groups defined by Goresky and MacPherson and the ordinary cohomology groups of a certain partial resolution of singularities of M(n,d). Based on our earlier work, we give a precise formula for the intersection cohomology pairing and provide a method to calculate pairings on the partial resolution of singularities of M(n,d). The case when n=2 is discussed in detail. Finally Witten's integral is considered for this singular case., Comment: 51 pages; 1 figure

Abstract

We prove formulas (found by Witten in 1992 using physical methods) for intersection pairings in the cohomology of the moduli space M(n,d) of stable holomorphic vector bundles of rank n and degree d (assumed coprime) on a Riemann surface of genus g greater than or equal to 2. We also use these formulas for intersection numbers to obtain a proof of the Verlinde formula for the dimension of the space of holomorphic sections of a line bundle over M(n,d)., Comment: 77 pages, LaTeX version 2.09. Abstract

Suppose $(M,\omega)$ is a compact symplectic manifold acted on by a compact Lie group $K$ in a Hamiltonian fashion, with moment map $\mu: M \to \Lie(K)^*$ and Marsden-Weinstein reduction $M_{red} = \mu^{-1}(0)/K$. In this paper, we assume that $M$ has a $K$-invariant K\"ahler structure. In an earlier paper, we proved a formula (the residue formula) for $\eta_0 e^{\omega_0}[M_{red}]$ for any $\eta_0 \in H^*(M_{red})$, where $\omega_0$ is the induced symplectic form on $M_{red}$. Here we apply the residue formula in the special case $\eta_0 = Td(M_{red})$; when $K$ acts freely on $\mu^{-1}(0)$ this yields a formula for the Riemann-Roch number $RR (L_{red})$ of a holomorphic line bundle $L_{red}$ on $M_{red}$ that descends from a holomorphic line bundle $L$ on $M$ for which $c_1(L) = \omega$. Using the holomorphic Lefschetz formula we similarly obtain a formula for the $K$-invariant Riemann-Roch number $RR^K(L) $ of $L$. In the case when the maximal torus $T$ of $K$ has dimension one (except in a few special circumstances), we show the two formulas are the same. Thus in this special case the residue formula is equivalent to the result of Guillemin and Sternberg that $RR(L_{red}) = RR^K(L)$. Abstract

Abstract Background Both pregnant women and those with multiple long-term conditions are under-served groups in clinical research. Informing and improving research through patient and public involvement, including pregnant women with two or more long-term health conditions, is critical to increasing their inclusion in maternity research. Giant PANDA is a randomised controlled trial, evaluating the effect of a treatment initiation strategy with nifedipine versus labetalol on severe maternal hypertension and a composite outcome of fetal/neonatal death, or neonatal unit admission. We aimed to undertake a mixed methods study-within-a-project within the Giant PANDA trial to understand barriers and facilitators to participation, understand and optimise current representativeness of clinical trial delivery of those with multiple long-term conditions and co-create a checklist to support their inclusion in pregnancy research. Methods We undertook online workshops with women with lived experience and hybrid workshops with healthcare professionals who look after women with multiple long-term conditions. A site audit of Giant PANDA sites provided insights into research delivery capacity and health system set-up, and how this influences inclusion. An extension to the Giant PANDA screening log captured data on multiple long-term conditions enabling analysis of the impact of these health conditions on women’s inclusion in the trial. We co-created a checklist of recommendations for those designing and recruiting to similar clinical trials. Results Five key recommendations were identified including a need to (1) involve women with multiple long-term conditions as partners in maternity research and (2) minimise barriers that stop them from taking part through (3) designing and delivering research that is flexible in time and place (4) consider research as part of care for everyone, including those with multiple long-term conditions and (5) measure and report inclusion of those with two or more health conditions in maternity research. Multiple long-term conditions were not a barrier to recruitment or randomisation in the Giant PANDA trial. Conclusion Women with multiple long-term conditions would like opportunities to find out about and participate in research which accounts for their needs. Our checklist aims to support those designing and delivering maternity research to optimise inclusion of individuals with multiple-long term conditions.
